OK say I have a custom rom and kernel flashed then I create a backup.

No, when you restore your backup it will also restore the kernel that you had backed up.

Thanks that's what I thought but wanted to make sure

Yes you can! But it's not called flashing, that's what you do to ROMs, it's called a restore. You can put it off as long as you can and it'll be there waiting for you when you need it most.
Thanks a bunch I might try a few Roms now then and see which I like the most thanks

Um. What? If you do a full wipe, what magic process do you expect to install your apps for you?
then what's the point in backing up the data

Not sure you understand... if you do a CWM backup, that is basically taking a snapshot of your entire phone image. Firmware, apps and their data, contacts, the whole kit and kaboodle. From there, you can restore the backup if you bork your phone provided you can still get to CWM recovery.
Your Google account will track what apps you have installed officially through the Play Store (formerly known as the Android Market), and it might even re-install some or all of them for you (depending on the version of market/play store you have after your full wipe), but it won't retain your app data. So if you do this, you'll lose all your Angry Birds high scores, in other words. That may or may not be a big deal to you.
As 078gregory said, you can use TB (Titanium Backup) to back up and restore app data.
just want to add.. CWM backup does not backup kernel or modem... it does backup the gps patch and other patches tho...
Yes. It does backup kernel. I restored my GM/Siyah CWM backup on Sunday after trying CM9 for a few days and my kernel was most definitely restored. You are correct about the modem tho.

Everything backed up by the Nandroid back up, apps, settings, layout, system files ect...
I'm Running Nandroid backup right now and realizing what I am asking is probably not doable seeing the two ROMs will have different launchers and such..
I take it that if I flash task's AOKP and decide to go back to SHOstock THEN I can use the backup I'm running now to restore... Correct??
you do know how a nandroid works right?
Not exactly, I always used TiPro to restore apps&data but never used Nandroid for a restore.. That's why I'm asking, just not quite sure what its limits are..

if you restore a complete nandroid, you are restoring the COMPLETE rom....wiping out the new rom.
you should never restore /system anything when going from one rom to another.
a nandroid is a complete system image. like a snapshot of your entire phone

If you've made a nandroid backup before cyanogenmod, then yes. Remember every thing you changed after your backup will be gone/lost.

A few questions;
1. What happens when you try to restore the backup?
2.What ROM are you using now?
3.What ROM were you using when you made the backup?
4.Have you performed a complete wipe since making the backup?
After you answer these i might be able to help you.

1. First i found the directory and pressed backup. It din begin only stuck at 0/56 (apps)..
2. Im currently using omega rom
3. Had flashed fusion rom.
4. No wipes.Im a regular flasher and im good at making things work. I tried everything, changed kernel, made a super wipe and installed rom again..still no luck..This happens everytime i install a aosp, aokp rom

Sorry, I'm confused, you said you didn't make a wipe, but then you said you did. Please try to be clearer. Also, Ive never used either of those ROMs so it may be that their file systems are incompatible, see if the backup works on the Fusion ROM. If it does, then they probably are, if it doesn't then the backup may be corrupt.
