Restore to stock - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm sorry if the answers to my question have been answered but I can't find them after searching for a few days.
I need to send my Atrix in for a repair or replacement. It is unlocked and rooted running Turl's CM9 right now. Obviously I can't send it back as is, so how should I go about everything?
Flash an SBF, flash a fruitcake rom, or something else that I haven't stumbled upon?
The only threads I could find are from a year ago and so much has changed since then. I just want to be sure I go about this the correct way. And should I go through ATT or Motorola? I know my phone is still under warranty with both.
Thanks for any help! It is much appreciated!

"Always have an exit strategy"
You can flash a fruitcake but the "unlocked" text will remain so you can hope for the best.
Or you can try an SBF (Disclaimer: at your own risk).
How long have you had it? Usually if you have had it for more than 30 days AT&T won't help but if you are still under "warranty" with them I would try AT&T first.
If you can't find a way to return your phone back to stock you can try Motorola, they might just overlook the modifications you have done.... or they might charge you a service fee...... or they might just send the phone back to you. It really depends on who ever is processing your claim and the mood they're in.
Also, please don't start multiple threads on the same topic.

OK thanks. I had read that if I use the Motorola Software Update tool it will erase the "unlocked" text. I don't know how true that is though.
And sorry about the multiple threads, its just annoying not being able to use half my keyboard in portrait. Just was hoping for some quick answers.
Thanks again for the quick response

I had restored a few times to stock.
I do that:
Reboot in fastboot mode and fastboot - w, fastboot erase system, fastboot erase cache, fastboot erase preinstall.
Turn phone off and pull out sim card and sd card.
Reboot in rsd mode (olding vol+ at boot) and flash your sbf with rsd lite.
That's all.

Ok, you don't happen to have a stock sbf file? I can't find one anywhere.
Also, why is it that we shouldn't flash sbf files? It seems that people have success with them but everyone keeps saying not to do that. But I can't find a stock flashable zip and the fruitcake links are dead so sbf seems to be my last resort.
I'm just stuck scratching my head because of all this confusion?

Look in the firmware superthread, in the last pages someone have a link in his sign to a page of many stock sbf files. I found there my updated one.
I always got succes with rsd lite but only with a full wipe with fastboot before it say "pass" at the end. Otherwaise it say to 'manually reboot'.
Don't know why people say "do not use sbf", probably there is a reason, but i think it is the only way to remove the 'Unlocked'
Here links to froyo sbf
and to GingerBread sbf
also you need to delete any folder about apps that need root to work and su folder and anything that presume you have rooted your phone

Depending on what build you are currently on you do not want to "downgrade". So if you are on a Gingerbread build (4.5.91 or 4.5.141) do not flash the Froyo SBF. And probably if you are on the 4.5.141 build (2.3.6), it is not recommended to flash the ".91" build. That is where the issues can occur.
I have also used RSD Lite to flash back to stock (a few times) but always use caution. So, for @scarbutt11, do you happen to remember what build you were on before you unlocked the bootloader and flashed a custom ROM?

Yeah, I was running stock 4.5.91/2.3.4. I'm on a cm9 build now. I'm not sure if that will matter at all for flashing back to GB? I know I tried cm7 to see if it was just cm9 causing the problems, but it seems it is hardware related.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA

Yeah, it depends on what "Official" build you were last on. Since you were on "4.5.91" then I would just use that SBF. Like someone else mentioned, it is possible to use RSD Lite, just use caution.

Took a little pulling of my hair while I waited but fastboot wipe and then flashing the stock sbf worked like a charm. I am back on stock GB, the unlocked text is gone and now I can hopefully get my phone fixed or replaced.
Thank you so much @live4nyy and @LeroyVold!!! Without you guys I would have been still scratching my head. I owe you both big time

No problem man, i need to do the same.
my touchscreen is more and more often unresponsive, so i'm flashing my stock sbf as i write.

Finally got a chance to swing by the AT&T store. They replaced the phone no problem thanks again guys!

Freaking Motorola phones, they break without you even touching them. I gotta figure out how to send mine to att as well.

u need to do a write up in here of how u did it. it might be redudant to some but to others like myself, it will be like having my hand held doing a scary process...your guidance as having it done yourself would help...with a how to..

For free, I bought the phone through them less than a year ago. All I said was that the screen was unresponsive and they looked at it for less than 10 minutes and then said they would replace it for me.

I want to update my Atrix, but I don't know what path to take?
a) Through the OTA 4.5.91...
b) Unlocking the bootloader, and then upgrading to GingerBread via Custom Roms...
I really need your help, because I am a newby in this whole area...
Right now I am runnig:

Depends what you want to do with your phone. If you like testing out custom roms and stuff then go the way of unlocking the bootloader and flashing one of the custom GB roms. If you want a stock phone with some minor root modifications then flash ota and root. Just beaware if you do the ota build you cannot flash back to froyo (not sure why anyone would but just to warn you)

can you refeer me to the posts where I can unlock the BL and then install a custom Rom
Yeah I am on 4.1.83 and Android 2.2.2.
I want to upgrade as well. Everything is stock currently.
I want to be able to do Cynogen later so I think I need to unlock and flash a custom rom.
So I am like the op and need to know where to go. There is so much argument and misinformation on this forum my head hurts. Just read for an hour and am more confused.
All I know is i dont want to do the OTA update lol!
HOwever I downloaded it already and my phone keeps asking me to install it...
DOes anyone know how to remove that?
Well, first, I suggest you do NOT flash the OTA update.
I recommend that you use the Pudding file in the Development sub-forum to unlock your device. There are video and text guides floating around how to unlock.
If you're not wanting to try out any ROMs yet, I suggest Kenneth's ROM. It's the OTA update, except without the risk of hard bricking if you ever need to flash down.
If you are all feeling adventurous, you could flash an Overclock kernel (I recommend Faux's 1.1GHz OC). You can also flash Ninja ROM v0.4.5. It's super fast.
@mercilus if you freeze the FOTA app in Titanium Backup, I think that stops it.
Here's the guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1167373
@artemalek I see that you're on 1.5.7, that means you have an AT&T branded device. You'll need to flash the AT&T version of Pudding for your unlock.

I just followed the directions and RSD said it failed and gave me an error. I accidently hit show phone and it erased the error message but it was something about error at restarting.
Now my phone wont turn on? When I hit the power button/hold it all I get is blank screen.
It doesnt try to turn on or anything?
Did i mess up the phone permanently? crap... just what i was trying to avoid..
any advice?
How full was your battery? And if your phone was hard bricked, you'd be seeing an error.

Battery was at like 80% when I last looked. So it was more when I started, and I did not leave the phone watched the whole process up til the point where it wont turn on anymore. So I doubt it lost all that battery in that brief 5 minute time.
Its been plugged in since still and no response from power button.
Everything was completely stock when I started.
Update: I just noticed when I take out my battery and plug in the charger I do get a green light as long as battery is out. When I put it in and plug in I get no lights. Not sure if thats helpful or means anything... (Just noticed its only with the USB charger I get the green light and not AC charger. The battery must be out)

[Q] Is my brick recoverable?

I get the message failed to boot 0x1000 Entering NVFLASH RECOVERY MODE.
I had installed Cyanogen Mod 2.3.4 and didn't like it at all and tried to flash the sbf to 2.3.3 . Now that I am reading it seems like a dumb move.
This message comes up when I turn it on and disappears quickly to remain at a black screen.

Yes, it was a dumb move. You should have read all the warnings that said NOT to sbf flash after bootloader unlock.
Anyway, now you need to SBF flash 2.3.4 with pudding and you should be good to go.
How can I flash sbf 2.3.4 if RSD Lite doesn't show anything? Or should I be using a different program like fastboot?
Do I just redownload the 2.3.4 cyanogen and install with the program you suggest? I am unsure how this will work because the computer doesn't beep or anything like that when I connect it.
Thanks for your help.

the only two sbf's that are safe to flash for people who installed the OTA update to gingerbread is the 2.3.4 sbf and the pudding sbf.
any others have the possibility of hard bricking your device, and nvidia hasn't released the nvflash program; therefor we're stuck at this step. no way to recovery from it.

Nvflash may never be released...
Rooting should never give you any problems. Unlocking the bootloader and putting on a custom rom just requires some reading and more reading beforehand but isn't too hard if you follow the instructions.

[Q] Safe to spf 2.3.4 stock gingerbread over unlocked and rommed gb?

Hello, I'm in quite the pickle and my head is spinning at this point. A few days ago I received a brand new Atrix from Motorola with 2.3.4 preinstalled. I unlocked and rooted it as well as installed tenfar's recovery and a a rom by the name of aura(de-blurred). After installing aura I noticed that my wifi no longer worked. I reflashed the rom and still it didn't work. I completely wiped everything and started over, still nothing. After countless efforts I tried installing the blurred version of aura in hopes that it would solve my problem. This was to no avail. Now I have no idea what happened after that, but somewhere along the line tenfar's recovery quit working. I get stuck at the motorola logo with the "unlocked" in the top left corner. I have no idea what to do now. I can't go into recovery which in turn means I can't install any new roms. The only option I can think of is to load a pudding abf of gingerbread. Am I safe in doing so? Are there other options? I have yet to find a real answer to this question so if anyone could possibly point me in the right direction that would be greatly appreciated. I'm so overwhelmed with how much information is out there I just don't know what to do. Thank you in advance for the help.
I'm also on ATT
If you're running 2.3.4 you can use a 2.3.4 SBF - just do NOT attempt to flash a 2.2.1 or 2.2.2 Froyo SBF - you WILL hard brick.
Will flashing a 2.3.4 sbf completely overwrite everything back to stock 2.3.4? At this point I just want an unlocked and rooted gingerbread. No roms or anything!

If you want to erase and stay on the same fw then all you need to do us a factory reset.
If you want to unlock, then use the IHOP (AKA Pudding) method found in the Dev forum...

If you are unlocked and it says "unlocked" during bootup, then you don't need to unlock it again. It's permanently unlocked.
Not sure about what's going on with your wifi. Have you tried resetting your router, or is happening with all wifi areas?...
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
It is happening with all wifi areas.
I also wanted to try the pudding sbf in hopes that it would fix the recovery. I may not need it anymore, but it's a nice feature to have just in case things really take a turn for the worse.
For your WiFi issue. Reset your WiFi router, and 'Forget' all networks on your Atrix. Then go through the paces of setting it all back up again on the Atrix once your home Router has been reset.
You can flash the pudding 2.3.4 sbf.
its not reccomended tho .. try out the fruitcakes first..

I don't have access to ANY recovery methods though. Tenfar's recovery refuses to boot and leaves me with the motorola logo and "unlocked" in the top left corner. Is there any known reason for this?
Can you enter fastboot?
If so you flash in that.
You can even download the rom manager recovery and flash it via fastboot too see if that recovery will let you do what you gotta do.

2.3.4 SBF is fine.... its not recommended to flash anything prior to 2.3.4 - as it results in hard bricking.

[Q] Unroot back to stock using RSDLite

Hi,
Could someone please help me? I'm trying to get back to full stock (well as close to it as possible) to either eliminate my problem or send back under warranty...my problem is detailed in this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1500220&page=3# ...basically my Atrix just will mot stop randomly rebooting/locking up with the screen off (needing a batter pull).
I have tried running RSDLite 5.6 in exactly the same way I unlocked the bootloader but nothing seemed to happen...RSDLite went all the way to 100% but all my phone did was reboot normally. Weird thing was, I didn't get a reboot for nearly 24 hours....and then they started again, quite regularly. Did I do something wrong? I though that SBFing it through RSD would just reflash completely back to stock.
Also, in case I cannot get rid of this REALLY annoying problem, I want to hide the 'unlocked' text at boot ...how would I go about doing that?
Thanks,
Mark

If you're trying to go back to stock then you have to find the official SBF. It sounds like you're using the same files that you used to unlock it in the first place.

Use a Fruitcake or you will brick
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
Please don't spread misinformation. Using RSD does not automatically result in a brick. I have used it numerous times flashing Official (AT&T) SBF builds and I am still using the same phone.
With that said, it is not recommended to use RSD (which I agree) but it can be used with caution and some knowledge/research in tow.
One precaution, do not flash previous builds (SBF).

If you can boot into RSD try sbf for 2.3.4 or even back to 2.3.3. I had issues before with 2.3.4 not performing a clean sbf. It would say it was completed but it would not wipe the phone. But when I would sbf 2.3.3 it would work fine. Worth a shot.

Can you only see part of the screen? If you hit your home button, what do you see?

I thought you could only install signed packages in the stock recovery. Is this different with the MX2?
nothing works
cant flash anything from stock recovery other than signed packages. is there anyway to flash a recovery from adb or fastboot. i can get to both of them along with rsd but cannot sbf as i have found out i have an mx2 stock with 2.3.6 and cannot sbf down to anything else. im reeally stuck here.

You cant flash anything using the stock recovery. You need a custom recovery. I dont know what the milestone x2 uses, but if its the same as the Droid X2, its the bootstrap recovery.
i cant get to my apps to run the recovery app. i really dont know what to do at this point, but i can use the phone to receive calls and text just cant make any because i error saying phone or messaging has stopped. can i flash the bootstrap in fastboot or adb i have tried but not real proficient with either.
okay done some reading im using rsd lite 5.4.4 and have been trying to flash the zips, just read the i must extract it first. is this so....

Someone else chime in if its different for the Milestone X2.
ionicone, bootstrap is not a flashable zip. it is an .apk file (app). Put it on your sd card and install it like a normal app. Then open it and follow the directions. I don't know how different the Milestone X2 is from the Droid X2 but thats how what we use and thats how we do it.
I may be misunderstanding but if nothing else works, SBF and start over.

And SBF should work as long as you can get into the normal recovery mode. I dont know why else SBF files wouldnt work for you.
i may not be very clear on my problem, but i cant install anything on the phone because of the error message it wont go away just says miuihome has stopped. everything i try to sbf through rsd lite fails but im in the process of extracting and trying that one has already failed trying another now.

What exactly did you change to make this happen in the first place?
If it was just the LCD density, try pushing the original build.prop file into the system folder. Since, I believe thats where the DPI is controlled. Or if you can get into with root explorer or something, change it back manually.
it was the lcd density property. can i rip this from the backup i have stored on my pc and push it through adb.
as far as sbfing this is what my phone says
SVF:106:2:3
sec_exception: b655, eddc, eb
thanks for replying btw

You should be able to. Just make sure the permissions are rw-r--r--
You can get it from your backup or pull it from the ROM you flashed
Why don't you just factory restore and cache then reboot from the menu and it should be fixed

tried that it does nothing, and now after trying to flash stuff through fastboot i may have bricked it. going to cspire today to see if i can warranty this one out.
update
cspire will let me warranty this one out, i will not root again until things are more stable as in an unlocked bootloader. thanks to everyone that tried to help.
They won't unlock the bootloader for a long time so don't get your hopes up and wasn't this your own fault?

maybe this helps " If your rooted go into root explorer and open System > Build.prop in text editor. Find the line labeled ro.sf.lcd_density= and change it to 240." from: Doahh droidx forums
It's the first response to the thread.
Good luck!
