When I connect the supplied HDMI cable between my Xperia S and TV*, I get a notification that HDMI is connected. However, TV launcher doesn't start so I cannot see anything on the TV screen.
Is it possible that an app I have installed is interfering with TV launcher?
Anything else I can try?
Xperia S on O2 UK, TV launcher is v 1.0.A.0.11.
*I've tried 3 different TVs with the same result.
I've now found a TV that it works on, so I know it's not my phone. New question: why doesn't it work on every TV?
Do you select HDMI input on your TV or you just wait until it shows up on TV screen? If the second, bear in mind some TV (if not set) they won't go to HDMI automatically.

Yes, I ensure that I select the correct input. For example on my Toshiba I use HDMI 4 which I choose before connecting the phone. When I do this, the blue Toshiba screen turns to black which probably indicates that something is physically connected to that input, but nothing happens on the phone other than the notification. I did the same on an Asus TV/Monitor and TV launcher starts. On an LG monitor at work it says that it's out of range.

Check via liveware if the tv starter is assigned to the hdmi action ;-)
Did it work on a Sony TV?
Im not sure but it might only work on other Sony products.

I don't have a Sony TV to test it on. It has only worked for me on an Asus 24T1E TV/ Monitor.

I have an LG monitor at work and it doesn't work on that. I thought HDMI meant it would work on any display with HDMI inputs.
Hello,
I've same trouble with my samsung TV. Same notifications but no picture on TV
Anynet+ and CEC activated, etc...
I'm thinking this fonction is not for all TV
i'll try on other TV
:'(
Works fine on my Samsung tv. Have no idea what types of televisions it works on.
Sent from my LT26i using XDA
My phone works fine with my sony bravia tv, i can operate almost everything with my tv remote except i cant input text like in google search...
the keypad opens up but i cant select the alphabets on it, any ideas?
Fixed with ICS
The problem appears to be fixed with the ICS update.
My TV is a Samsung LE32C450E1WXXH with anynet+ CEC support and I had this problem. The best way is the update. This was helped me 'cause before the software uptade the TV doesnt recognise the remote control command to my Xperia P. But after that i turned on the Anynet+ and VOILAA that works!

Hi there, sorry if this has been asked before. I did have a quick look (The first post in the FAQ thread) around but couldnt find this question, if it has already been asked please point me in the right direction .
I am looking at purchasing myself a SGS2 soon (Month or so, when the price drops) but I was wondering do you need a Samsung TV to connect it to the SGS2? I currently have a LG 32" and Panasonic 42", will either of these be ok?
Also a side question, which im guessing has been asked before, do I connect to the TV using a HDMI cable or DLNA? Im not exactly sure what DLNA is? is it just connecting to the Tv wirelesly?
Thanks for all the help. Cheers
Hi look here for DLNA http://www.dlna.org/digital_living/how_it_works/
In a nut shell yes its a way of communication between two wifi enabled devices that are DLNA certified . Your TV will have a certificate or state that it is DLNA compliant .
You can stream music , videos , etc to all DLNA devices over the air removing the need for cables.
I personally prefer cables as WiFi can be a hit and miss affair with most interference involving anything on 2.4 ghz will effect performance.
So any DLNA device your Samsung will connect to with the ALL share app
No it doesn't need to be a Samsung TV. Any TV which has a HDMI port would work perfectly fine.
I know it's maybe a little pedantic but you really dont need a tv to have a phone
The only thing a samsung TV one of the later ones will give you is the ability to use the phone as a wifi-remote and control.
DLNA which stands for complete crap, is actually good it's a simple way to stream from source to targets or to be able trigger said stream from targets specified. Best to do a youtube search as it will explain it more.
Most new tv's have dlna server clients built in. HDMI is a faster way to get a stream to play on a tv though so depends.
Side note : The current bit rate for HD vid shot on the phone is actually really crap, 10-13mbits so anything you shoot on the phone would stream over wifi using dlna quite easy. However if you decided to put a 40mbit per second HD movie, streaming over wifi maybe a little hard on all but the best wifi routes/systems. For that you would really want a hdmi out for your sgs2
Neways, hope that helps
Edit : 2 replies in the course of me typing this, must type faster
just be clear here, any TV with a HDMI port will allow picture and sound from the phone, however you are going to have to wait until june to get the adapter to allow this. This adapter (MHL) converts the mini usb port into a data port which will allow usb host, hdmi and charging from a MHL enabled TV (not available yet) and just picture and sound from a normal TV with HDMI.
Thanks for the replies everyobdy. Barry, I wouldnt want to record a video and then show it on Tv, I would most likely be downloading a movie/tv show to my PC, then onto my phone then play it through the TV. That can be done cant it?
Cheers

If you want to show wirelessly on TV, and the TV is DLNA compliant, you can show directly from PC to TV. You can also throw an HDMI cable from PC to TV if you can.

Thanks for that. So basically what you are saying is currently if I was connecting the phone to a TV using HDMI the sound would come out of the phone and not the TV? However when this adapter gets released the sound will come out of the TV?
If you use DNLA then no, sound and video both will come out of the tv. If you're talking about connecting to tv's HDMI then again no, both sound and video come out of the tv. In other words, if video comes out of the tv, so will sound. If video doesn't come out of the tv, then neither will sound.
Basically you either get both or none lol

correct, both send sound and video to the tv digitally.

Is it impossible to charge the phone while connected to a non-MHL TV, or does the adapter have a separate charging pass-through?
The MHL-HDMI adapter has a socket for a charger so you phone will get charged, too.
Hi All,
My dream, one that I hope Android can help me fulfill is to hook my Galaxy S2 to a HDMI tv, fire up remote desktop and by using a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, effectively have a full desktop available.
I am yet to try hooking up my phone to a tv as I am waiting for the MHL cable, but issues I envisage are the following:
1) When the screen is mirrored on the TV, the RDP program will not use the TVs display show 'full screen'. I have installed some RDP applications and they allow you to select the resolution so perhaps this will resolve the issue
2) Are there any RDP applications that allow bluetooth keyboard and mouse entry?
This is the hold grail for me!! Many a time I have stayed in a hotel for work or holiday and not had my laptop with me and wished for such a solution. Combine this with Wake On Lan and it's perfect!
I hope someone can help!
I can't believe i'm the only one that wants something like this to work!
RDP programs should just take any inputs from your phone and pass them onto the remote machine so BT kb/m should work ok IMO. Not sure about the mirroring but if it is fullscreen on the phone then maybe the MHL cable will upscale for the TV.

I'm waiting for the cable before I can try. In fact I would have had it by now but my girlfriend wants to buy some stuff for me for my bday and I believe she's already ordered it!
I should get mine tomorrow and I'll try it out.
Thanks! I'll check back on thread!
I've been doing some reading around and have found that BT keyboards and a mouse will work no problem.
I tried my MHL cable with the Android VNC viewer app and allows you to fit to screen but does not output at the tv's native res.
I have had similar experience with Remote RDP, it just mirrors the phone's native resolution. Hopefully this kind of thing will be supported soon, including internet browsing at 1080p.
Thanks guys, that sux!
I still haven't received my cable so I can't try for myself, but have you managed to make it work to a workable output on the TV?
would be interesting if we could port some parts from the atrix (webtop) over to this phone. I actually enjoyed that feature.

Perhaps, this kind of program may help to format the resolution?
Am I missing something? If you got a bt keyboard and bt mouse and the phone to tv hdmi, don't you have it all? Why would you need a remote desktop or vnc software?
Well, you'd have it all except for USB, which you might be able to live without.

If it could pump out the full Remote Desktop resolution then you will effectively have a full desktop through your phone rather than just have the phone's software capability.
Fair enough you can surf the web and play a video but what if I want to use full excel or Word, and multi-task like on a desktop.
I've still not received my cable so I don't know whether the browsing the net with the phone's browser is legible on a big screen.
In my earlier post I complete missed off the applications name - LCD Density - haven't tried and I don't know if it's compatible with the SGSII, but sounds like it changes the native resolution of the phone.
Try Splashtop as your vnc app it is the only one to my knowledge that can stream audio almost perfect and video pretty good over vnc and works like a charm on the atrix.
Did you find a good BT keyboard that works well with the Evo? I'd prefer one with a built in trackpad, as my goal is to use this on the road (ie, airports, trains, etc), and would like to have an all-in-one keyboard/mouse.
The one thing that I haven't had time to tinker with have been HDMI goggles that can give a virtual display. Has anyone tried these w/ the Evo's mini-HDMI output?
I have Sony Bravia KDL-40D3500 TV and i am connecting my Xperia S using HDMI cable provided in the box
I can not browse my phone using the TV Remote at all.
Searched all the internet but no solution actually no one having this issue except me.
Even under External Inputs from TV remote i select HDMI Device Selection as Player 1 it does not work its displays following
Launching. Please wait.
Communication failed. please check your cable or connection.
Under "setting --> HDMI Setup --> Device List Update" could not able to find anything even my phone is connected. and if i select "HDMI Device List" nothing is listed there as well.
not sure what can i do but its shame the sony phone does not work with Sony Bravia. I have check the spec of this tv it says it has Bravia Sync but not sure how to locate it ?
thanks
I have a Sony Kdl, dont think its the same as yours. For the remote to work the tv launcher app needs to be running, also in the tv options I found "enable hdmi control" or simlar, it then warns you that standby will use more elec. Once I enabled this the remote worked, I used hdmi 3 too on the side
Hi
Tv launcher app is running in background even bringing it to foreground does not make any difference.
Enable hdmi control ? Where u found this option? On tv settings or xperia s?
Cause I dont see any warning abt elec at standby at all.
When u say hdmi 3 ? What this means?
So confused. Please help :-(

For HDMI 3,
I think he meant the jack number on the TV.
Sent from my X10 Mini Pro using Tapatalk
It does work with my Panasonic TV. Like WasherUK says, need to enable hdmi control on your TV setup.
For Panasonic, it is called Vierra Link.
On my Sony KDL tv the option is
Home Button
Setup/Hdmi Set Up/Control For HDMI = On
Yes HDMI 3 was just the 3rd HDMI input on the TV meaning the HDMI control is not exclusive to HDMI input 1
There is an option on the XS too that needs to be checked about Remote Control.
---------- Post added at 10:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:07 PM ----------
One other thing I noticed today, when you run the TV launcher if you scroll the icons with your finger on the screen before using the tv remote then the remote wont work. I had to press the home tab on the phone to close tv launcher and re run it then dont touch the screen with your finger, try the tv remote first.
I had the same issue with my sony kdl.
The first thing i had to do was to update the tv firmware!
Then, what i did was to plug the xperia to the tv via hdmi and launch the tv app.
Then on the tv i've launched the "discover hdmi peripheals". The tv saw the phone and then i was able to use the remote to control the phone.
Ok I think I got few things to try on by the time I get home.
Also how to update tv firmware.
I would like to do that if it resolves everything.
Thanks to all of you.

tried almost everything but no luck
Here is the outcome:
My KDL40D3500 only has 2 HDMI sockets
On my remote (RM-ED009) I do not have any Home key.
I guess the MENU key is equivalent to that.
Menu-->Settings-->Set-up-->HDMI Setup contains following
HDMI Control ------------- ON
Auto Device Off ---------- ON
Auto TV On -------------- ON
Device List Update
HDMI Device List
there is nothin appeared in HDMI Device List even after doing Device List Update.
Second thing is as below:
Menu --> External Inputs --> HDMI Device Selection (greyed out when xperia is not connected)
When connected i select this option and it displays a list saying Player 1 (only in the list)
also sometimes player 1 and Player 2, which is same as the text appears on the left hand top corner of the TV.
Even i select, it says on the bottom right hand corner.
"Launching. Please wait."
then after couple of seconds
"Communication failed. please check your cable or connection."
Also i am surprise i cannot see any specific setting to BRAVIA as well.
The only thing left is to update the firmware of Sony KDL, but i dont know how to do that. looking on internet for this, if anyone knows how to update it ?
On xperia option about remote control is checked.
Very odd
When I connect my phone to the tv the tv says "Cell Phone" does yours?
Dont forget once you run the tv launcher (the screen with a few apps along the bottom and music player at the top not your normal phone home screen) dont touch the screen again, it seems you can either use the remote or your finger not both. If you use your finger you have to repeat the connection process without touching the screen for the remote to work.
Mine does not detect it at all. so nothing like cell phone
Only this happens when i connect phone
"Menu --> External Inputs --> HDMI Device Selection (greyed out when xperia is not connected)
When connected i select this option and it displays a list saying Player 1 (only in the list)
also sometimes player 1 and Player 2, which is same as the text appears on the left hand top corner of the TV."
i think i should give up, xperia s is not worth wasting time.
"on ur face SONY"
btw my phone also developed "yellow tint" on screen if used intensively for about 5-10 mins
this is apparently happened to lot of other user... see talk.sonymobile and search for "yellow tint"
Any news?
Same here. I have a KLV-37NL14A and I can not control the XS using the remote control. The TV does not recognize the XS when I update the list on the menu.

In order for your issue to be resolved you will need to use a high speed HDMI cable in order for it to work. If you need any other assistance please use our eSupport website at esupport.sony.com

I think you shouldn't act like that. Anyway, I don't know about your TV, but mine Samsung 32' LED Serie 5 recognizes my phone as a usual HDMI connection. To enter the HDMI mode on the phone, I just connect to the HDMI in that the cable is connected...
Hi... Not sure how u took my words but I mean to say high speed hdmi cable cannot be a solution for that. I know it works on many tv and my tv model is mentioned above. I also know it doesn't work on many tv's but I think behind this concept is to make every bravia technology virtually linked. My tv is bravia n made by Sony. If it is not supported on this tv I loose my trust on Sony. No big deal but it would be ideal to work in that. Not buying Sony product again. I have had every popular thing Sony has made but I think it's time to move on. Thanks Sony. N you guys to responding to old thread. I was already given up. Lols

I tried to connect my XPS to a new Techwood 19 inch TV (Morrisons) via HDMI but it says out of range.
Is this because the output is 1080P but the TV only goes to 720P?
If it is the above reason can i change the signal from the phone to 720 as i cant see any setting to down grade it?
Go to dialpad, type *#*#"SERVICE"#*#*
Its in the options there(right at the bottom of the service tests).
Tried that and everything worked, 1080p and 720p, till I unplugged it and put it back in. Wondering if this is another glitch that ics will fix. It works as normal on my haanspree tv so not 100% which device is the problem lol

That is your TV that does it. Check the settings menu, it's doing something called "overscan".
You can change the picture size in the HDMI settings down to 80%. Mine (when it works) is set to 94% to fit in the TV screen.
I'm wondering if its the TV app that automatically boots up when i connect the cable thats causing my problems. Will see if it improves when ICS comes out.

Thanks, I had the problem with my LG IPS237, my Xperia S will display it just fine, but I have a window box saying "out of range 33.7kHz 30Hz" that blocking my view
what i did is to go Service Menu on my Xperia S and just press "set resolution" again on my 720p output, and that nagging window is gone.
Though it comes up again once I switch away from the HDMI and switch back.
Is there any way to connect my xperia u to tv.

is your tv on the same wifi network as your xperia u when you tried the dlna, should work, dont know of any other way if your phone doesnt have the hdmi port... Im sure there are ways if you were to set up some sort of media server but theres no point you'd be better off doing that from your laptop or something, way easier

That phone have a hdmi port? If it have one you can use the specific cable for that.
Why DLNA doesn't work? remember, both devices need to be in the same network ( i mean, same subnet) in order to work properly
Sorry for my bad english
XU has no HDMI port. Only using DLNA as was described upper, or to use Media Server - but I'm not sure if TV knows to work with shared media over WiFi...with notebook no problem, but with TV... DLNA is the way...
