[Q] Need clean installation? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After updating ICS LP7 by Odin, I have a problem. When I switched to other roms (XXLPQ, CM7, MIUI...etc), there are several applications such as IM, Photo editor, Polaris Office,... automatically installing at the first boot although I tried to do full-wipe before flashing a new rom.
Please help! I need clean installation... Thanks

after going to ICS u should go to GB first before going to any GB roms... and u should do hardreset... option>privacy>erase data (tick the format usb)
ATTENTION!!! THIS WILL WIPE EVERYTHING BESIDE YOUR EXTERNAL SD

In that case the applications are in the rom you are flashing or on the SD card .

I have tried the methods, but they didn't help. My device has no external MC, and the SD card is empty (just formatted). I had never got the problem with any customize rom but after flashing official ICS LP7.

Its very very simple .
No data no apps no firmware on SD card as its been wiped its blank .
You then install a firmware .
The firmware has a number of apps in it as stock it installs them as normal .
You say not in custom rom that simply means you did not read the instructions etc for the rom . Custom roms often have apps removed so do not install .

I understand what you mean, but my problem now is that my phone cannot get a clean installation of any rom. Recently I did not want ICS LP7 any more and want to try MIUI ICS. After a full-wipe and flashing miuiandroid_SGS2-2.3.16, several applications (IM, Photo editor, Polaris Office,...) from previous Rom (ICS LP7) automatically installed at the first boot. I tried a few times to re-flash MIUI with full-wipe, but the problem was there! So I flashed another rom (GT-I9100_WanamLite.XXLPQ.V9.3.StockTheme) with full-wipe, and some app from Rom ICS LP7 installed automatically at the first boot again.

Have you done what JJE suggested & flashed a stock GB rom in Odin ? We understand you're unable to get things working by any other method, what JJ suggested will give you a 'clean slate' to start with in his words.

Yes, thank guys. By following JJEgan's suggestion, I got it cleaned now.
- Format Cache/System/Data
- Flash Official GB firmware (2.3.4) by Odin
- Flash insecure kernel and Rooting using S2 root again (It's quite been along time I used this once)
Now I can be back to any Rom with clean installation again!
Thanks for your valuable time.

BEST wipe for S2!

HEY HO
This topic is about YOUR ways to full wipe/reset/restore a Samsung galaxy S2 !!!
! Not the halfwipes with caches factory reset and flashing rom. !
Looking for the REAL restoring.
This has to include the whole Phonesoftware! How to install your phone brandnew if anything went wrong. How to install even every phone driver ... EVERYTHING ^^
Lets see what you have got in your Pocket
? Provide one yourself.
use an usb jig and flash a stock rom
Boot |CWM recovery mounts and storage format cache system dalvik data and sd card
Phone empty flash stock rom through Odin .reset custom rom counter with USB jig if needed .
Real restore and brand new comment would make the assumption that the user had saved the original firmware or at least had access to a copy . In which case replace original firmware by flashing via Odin instead of stock rom .
Fairly simple tasks .

xD no ... my wifi driver just doesnt work anymore and I flashed the stock rom (from samfirmware.com) about 3-4 times now but it doesnt "repair" the driver or anything ^^
I have been helping the OP try to Fix his wifi problem and the first thing we suggested is to flash back to the factory state.
Even after doing a full wipe there are files missing on his system preventing the WIF from working. in particular the following files are missing:
/data/.cid.info
/system/etc/wifi/nvram_net.txt
Who knows what other files are missing.
So my question is how come after the OP did the following using clockworkmod
wipe system
wipe data
wipe cache
wipe dalvik-cache
These are STILL missing files after restoring the stock ROM. Are these files not part of the system ROM? or are the generated automatically by some start-up script on first run. I suspect that some first run start-up script is not being run on the OP S2 which would normally generate the missing files.
So the question is how to do a complete factory reset of the S2 in cases were some of the original files have got corrupted or deleted.
(for the background on this problem read thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1285249 )
Come on guys we can help the OP rebuild his S2.
So the question is how to do a complete factory reset of the S2 in cases were some of the original files have got corrupted or deleted.
If the factory files are corrupt on the device you will need new firmware .
Factory = the last firmware to be flashed .Restore copy is whats flashe d on wipe and factory reset .Factory reset returns to last flashed firmware NOT original firmware that came with the phone out of the box .
If you follow my post above then you end up with an empty phone with a clean sd card .
Flashing either original firmware or Stock Samsung firmware via Odin as the next step .
Simple as recovery /format /Odin /flash.

That's because a stock rom might not come with a stock kernel.
Your problem sounds like a kernel problem, not necessarily a ROM problem. My suggestion is to wipe /system, /data, /cache, and then install a fresh CM7 nightly. These come with ROM AND Kernel. If your wifi works in CM7 then you know for sure your phone isn't damaged. If wifi still doesn't work, you may have to return your phone.

hmm I flashed with cf root kernel ... it should be the stock kernel or am I wrong ?!?
For the record the offending two lines in his logcat are:
E/WifiHW (2927): return of insmod (args:firmware_path=/system/etc/wifi/bcm4330_sta.bin nvram_path=/system/etc/wifi/nvram_net.txt) : ret = -1, Invalid argument
E/WifiService(2927): Failed to load Wi-Fi driver.
Does any body know if these two errors are caused by a hardware or software problem?

Whenever i install a custom rom my sgs2 bootloops

Whenever i install a custom rom my sgs2 bootloops, it runs fine on the ones i flash with odin, but when i try to flash a custom rom it bootloops the i9100 screen and i can't even get into recovery, only download mode...
Name a ROM that's not flashing for you and list your install procedure.
Which other ROMs have you tried to install? What recovery do you currently have?
latest clockworkmod recovery...i reboot into it i wipe data and dalvick, then i install the rom and reboot(i am not a newbie) i have tried with cyanogenmod 7 and 9 , and some custom roms here in the forums...MIUI also...

CM7 (and CM7 based ROMs) has to be flashed twice from recovery, and often won't flash from a CF Root kernel; instructions in the Nightly thread, post 1.
I had no issue flashing CM9 but I came to it from CM7 so I had CWMR 5.0.2.7 already. I'm unsure if people flashing from a CF Root kernel have issue moving to CM9 directly or not.

What's your latest recovery? I have 5.5....
Did you flash twice from recovery like I asked? Did you flash from a cf root kernel?
Since you're not giving useful info I'll unsubscribe from this thread now.

sorry, i am on cwm recovery 5.0.2.7
And did you flash cm7 TWICE from recovery? It won't install otherwise.
Sent from a Phone
yes i flashed it twice, also when i chose the zip it finishes installing in like 2-3 seconds, from what i know a rom takes about 30 seconds to install at least, and then it bootloopes from the samsung galaxy s i9100 screen with the yellow triangle and it keeps restarting and i can't even get into recovery after that, i have to flash cf-root kernel again in recovery then i install simple and clean 2.4(only rom that works besides stock) and i do it all again:|...also when i try to install cm7 with rom manager, when it reboots to install the rom it boots into the stoock recovery and gives me an error, does the battery level count?
Downgrade CWM to an older version.
Flash cfroot KK5 or something like that via Odin and see if that makes a difference.
Also intratech has the old bootloader in his thread to flash via Odin. Might help also.

ok thank you i will report back
Have same problem after flashing KP8 rom... I believe it installed new bootloaders and it won't flash the older ones again.
Went through about 5 or 6 stock roms, some booted but had problems with google and the phone apks . Reloaded kp8 and it works perfectly... Don't have time to play around, working.... Something to do later...
CyanogenMod7
To start off a clean slate :
1. Flash XWKK5 ( Frankenstein build ) from intratech's thread via Odin
2. Flash CF-Root for XWKK5
3. Boot into CWM
4. Wipe data
5. Wipe cache
6. Advanced -> Wipe dalvik cache
7. Install zip from sdcard -> CyanogenModxxx.zip (xxx=version)
8. AGAIN Install zip from sdcard -> CyanogenModxxx.zip
9. Reboot phone
10. If your still getting a bootloop but your keys are backlit , turn off phone , remove and reinsert battery, turn it on
CyanogenMod9
You need to flash the new bootloader too ( read instructions on the CM9 thread)
MIUI
Same as CM7 , except you don't need to flash it twice
Hope i helped
EDIT : Going back from CM9 -> You CANT flash CM7 , you have to flash stock first then CM7 , also you need the old bootloader

If u have searched u must have find the answer.
Whenever you are flashing any Samsung custom rom and stuck on boot screen, just flash any CFROOT kernel via odin it will boot.
and for CM7 & MIUI just flash Siyah 2.1 or Speedmod 13...it should boot.
This problem was faced by me and I did found the above solutions.

Not true, Mine goes into boot loop constantly... If it does boot then I get error about google and phone apks and can't get past the "touch the android" page....
I believe their is a minority of sgsII's tha have this problem, might be something to do with the new bootloaders not being completely wiped but it doesn't matter how many times I install a stock rom I get problems... And yes, I always flash the cfroot kernels after... Doesn't help....
Hi.
Having come from the HTC HD2,I am a complete noob when it comes to galaxy s2 and flashing Roms etc;
I know I had problems.....until I discovered that unlike the HD2,placing a rom on the sd card means placing it into the internal memory of the phone and not the sd card you have inserted.
Hope this helps!

What I meant was:
SD card = internal memory of phone i.e. 16Gb
External SD card = the micro SD card you physically insert into the phone

Stuck on flashing S logo

Ok here is what happened
I tried installing the HyDrOG3N-ICS 25.03 rom today on my S2. Everything went smooth. When I restarted my phone again in recovery mood to install the gapps I got the following error
E:/ Can't mount /emmc
Being scarred I tried to reflash the new XXLPQ rom on my phone through odin. Everything went fine in odin but now after restating my phone is stuck on the S boot logo..
Any help guys please.
Boot into recovery & do a wipe/factory reset.
also to provide information.
I am able to go into recovery and download mode. I have wiped the cache and factory reset but still getting the same error.. I can flash the stock rom again but I am worried that emmc error may cause the phone to brick...
OK. If a reset didn't fix it you're going to need to do an Odin flash.
Find a stock rom in Intratech's thread if the links work, if they don't work, you can download one for Samfirmware.com (follow whatever instructions they have for flashing firmware downloaded from their site).
Or if you're happy with the latest firmware for your carrier/country you'd normally get with Kies, get the PC version of Checkfus which will enable you to download same. Follow the Odin instructions in Intra's thread to flash the package you download with Checkfus.
Well did the reflash on the XXLPQ rom and after 10 nerve racking minutes..its up and running.. Thanks alot.
Don't thank me, you fixed it on your own Glad you got it sorted
helped another noob help himself ....
Hahahaha I guess I did then.
ok new problem.. The mobile is running fine now..
but when I go into recovery mode it can't fine my internal sd card. I can't apply an update from a zip file.
It gives me an error that can't mount E: ... looks like my internal memory is broke..
seems like the custom rom fried it or something. And I can't go post on that thread thanks to xda new members rule :/
Only way to find out if it's a rom problem or something else is to go back to stock as originally suggested. Or wait until you can post on the dev thread.
I am back on the stock XXLPQ 4.0.3 rom for the S2. Still getting the error in recovery mode.
Can't access the internal SD
Do a 'clean' flash, I.E format cache, data, system, & sd card then flash in Odin. Or reflash a GB stock rom & see if you still have the problem. If you do, it might be hardware issue.
I can still access it through the file manager but can't access it through recovery
so it can't be a hardware issue can it?
and I am on the stock kernal and standard recovery so there isn't option for formatting data, system, & sd card, just cache. what do I do now?
the error that i am getting is.
E:failed to mount /sdcard (No such file or directory exist)
CWM was refereing to that as emmc .. maybe is that the issue???
Probably not in that case.
OK. I'm only going to say this one more time. I have no idea of the nuances of the particular rom you're using, because I've never used it.
However...
If I were running a 'stock' (*coughs* ahem) ICS rom or any other ICS variant & I was having problems like that, I would go back to GB to see if the problem can be reproduced. If so, then it's pretty obvious what the issue is. If not, then it's clearly an issue with the ICS rom & you need to speak to the developer/more experienced users of the rom in question.
As I have no idea of how the rom you're using handles the links to the external/internal SD cards, I have no idea about 'CWM was refereing to that as emmc .. maybe is that the issue ?'.
ok thanks.. one question what do u mean by GB rom? I am using the samfire ICS stock rom
and by cwm meant clock work mode recovery
Gingerbread. Pre-ICS. Country specific/non carrier specific roms here, carrier specific roms here. If links don't work, go to Samfirmware.com & find a stock rom for your carrier/country or a generic one for your country only.
Yes, I know what you meant by CWM.
Thanks will try the XWKI4 rom. That was the one before this one.. will it be ok to flash back to that through odin from ICS??
Yep. Shouldn't be any dramas flashing GB via Odin if you're currently using ICS.
Finally 10 post.. now I can go ask the developer
I had the same issues as you, could not access the SD.
In my case, I could just use USB mode in CWM, and copy over the Rom again to a part of the filesystem CWM could actually access.

[Q] How to flash a custom rom HELP!!!

I want to flash a custom rom on my sgs2 .....
want someone to help me choose a custom rom and a detailed method to flash that rom(coz maybe different roms have different method).....I'd like to have a nice theme different from the official firmware.....and can i flash an ICS based custom rom to my gingerbread running phone wtih a full wipe or do i have to flash an ICS firmware and then flash a custom rom???
My phone is running with gingerbread 2.3.6 xwkl1 (rooted) !!!!!
Thank you in advance !!!
1) Try a bunch of roms until you find one you like. Not doing so is laziness on your part. Have a look at the development section of the forum, there are heaps of roms there for you to read up on the features & try out.
2) Follow whatever flashing instructions the particular rom you want to try has to the letter.
Resurrection Remix ics is great choice...

most of the roms are in zip format, you just put the downloaded file into you sgs2's internal sd, reboot to cwm.
with the tar format, you need odin to do the job.
i'm new to rooting but i think its pretty much the same way for most devices, for .tar files you need to use odin and if they're .zip you can connect your phone to computer and copy the .zip file onto the root of your internal SD card which basically means don't place it in any folders. disconnect your phone, reboot to recovery, if your coming from another ROM you need to wipe data/factory reset & wipe cache partition, dalvik cache should also be wiped. after that select install zip from sd card or it might say from internal sd card select internal if it does, click select you ROM package (.zip file), the installation will begin, after completion go back to recovery menu and click on reboot system. hopefully it should boot with no problems.
I'm actually using Omega v11.1 ICS with Speedmod K3-16, and it's the best rom I've tried. It's perfectly smooth and stable, and this is the most ICS themed rom. To install it, simply make a full wipe and install with CWM

[Q]Installing custom rom on I9100.. Possibly bricked

Ok heres what i did.
First On 2.3.6 KL1 i presume. Rooted my phone using CF ROOT

Then Installed F1 Galaxy Nexus ROM

Then tried to dual boot (Greedy me!)
The other ROM i thought of was Resurrection ROM..
Then i installed it. Using this guide

So the next time i installed Siyah 3.2b5 My phone didn't boot after The initial S2 logo.
So I then flashed a new ROM KL8 from Odin
Its working fine.
But am not able to install any other ROM.
Any idea what might be the issue?
Thanks in Advance

What intrigues me is that, If i use KL8 alone (which is flashed via odin) Am able to use the mobile. use it well actually
But if i try to use any other ROM its stuck in the Boot logo
I tried LPQ from Intratech. Even that didnt work.
I thought this could be an issue with the kernel
(But i realised i was able to flash CF Root's kernel and move back to stock kernel so there would be no issue with regards to Kernel.)
Incorrect or Incomplete download wont be an issue i guess as I tried two to three ROMS.
Btw. I used this link

I followed all the Instructions (Guess may be cause of the PIT file. I'm not sure cause ive seen in posts that we should not lay hands on PIT files)
So someone please help me out.
Will be ever so grateful

By formating system cache data you mean wipe options in CWM right. That i have done lotsa times. Can kernel failure cause these issues, as once i got Kernel panic mode error??
If you follow a link from another forum why not ask them its their instructions after all .
XDA says total wipe of the phone and start again.
and do not touch a PIT file ever .

I think the problem was that you tried to dual boot with a 4.0.3 and a 4.0.4 ported ROM.As far as Im aware 4.0.3 is the supported ROM for dual boot with Siyah kernel.I personally wouldnt trust 4.0.4 dual boot yet.Do as posted above and you should be O.k.
