This is a tutorial for begginers with Stock,un-touched Eclair 2.1 to reach having a custom kernel and/or a custom ROM.You will also find Tools and ROMs (Reference).
***I am not responsible if something bad happens to your device. You can continue at your own risk.Even though a hard brick is very rare you still continue at your own risk~~!Also if you perform step #18 you lose your warranty (The warranty will be back if you relock your bootloader again, but make sure to flash stock again or your phone becomes permanent brick )
Rooting : (Needed for Mods,Root applications)
Step #1 : Download Flashtool and install it from this website : Flashtool 0.6.8.0 and install it.
Step #2 : Download Sony Ericsson Update Service (will be mentioned SEUS) from this website : Sony Ericsson Update Service and install it.
Step #3 : Go to Settings>Applications and tick Allow install from unknown sources.
Step #4 : Go to Settings>Applications>Development and tick usb debugging.
Step #5 : Open Flashtool.
Step #6 : Connect your phone to your Computer via USB Cable without mounting USB storage.
Step #7 : Click on the unlock icon in Flashtool.
Step #8 : If a popup appears saying that it can't identify the device select U20i X10 Mini Pro and click OK.
Step #9 : If a popup appeared as in step #8 another one should pop.It will be saying : Do you want to permananently identify this device as U20i?Click Yes/OK.
Step #10 : If it has finished it will reboot.Normally,in the applications drawer you will find a new application called SuperUser.
ClockWorkMod recovery (Needed for installing Custom ROMs and mods)
Step #11 : Download ClockWorkMod 3.2 from here.
Step #12 : Extract the .zip file you just downloaded on your desktop/wherever you'd like.
Step #13 : Double-click the file called install(.bat)
Step #14 : Press Enter
Step #15 : Is your device ROOTed? Type y and hit enter.
Step #16 : Do you already have a recovery installed? Type n and hit enter.
Step #17 : Turn off your phone.Turn it back on and when Sony Ericsson white letters apear keep pressing rapidly the back button. If you got into an orange menu then ClockWorkMod has got installed. You can navigate using the Volume keys, select using the home button and go back using the back button. For now navigate to Reboot sytem now and hit the Home button.
Bootloader and kernel install: (Optional, and you do this at your own risk)
Step #18 : Unlock your bootloader as described here : Unlock Bootloader
Step #19 : Download one of the many ROMs in the X10 Mini Pro Android Development section or try out mine which is MiniCM7 improved : XMP ROM. <== (Requires kernel nAa-11,unlocked bootloader!)
Step #20 : Download a kernel (if you unlocked the bootloader),I personally suggest nAa-11 kernel. Then put it in C:\Flashtool\firmwares.Open Flashtool and click on the lightning icon.Select the kernel (not kernel.sin, kernel meaning ex. nAa-11) and click OK.Remove battery, instert USB cable, keep pressing back button while adding battery till LED green flashes.Wait till it finishes.
How to install ROMs(If you dont unlock bootloader you need roms that dont require,ex. MiniCM7Pro by paul-xxx)
Step #21 : Put your downloaded ROM (it is a .zip file) into your SDcard.
Step #22 : Reboot into CWM-Recovery (ClockWorkMod) and select backup and restore.then select backup.Yes.
Step #24 : Install custom zip.E.g. MiniCM7 2.1.9 mimmi.zip|
Step #25 : Select yes.
Step #26 : If it doesn't boot you probably have installed a ROM that needs a custom kernel and you are on stock : You need to unlock bootloader/use another one which doesn't require custom kernel e.g. MiniCM7Pro V21.
Step #27 : I hope you enjoy your device. If you damaged your phone (e.g. stucks at Sony Ericsson text) Open Sony Ericsson PC Companion and select repair phone.Select X10 Mini Pro and select update. Now remove the battery of your phone (it just has to be turned off) keep holding the back button and insert USB cable to Computer.Green LED will flash from your phone.Just wait till it finishes. Now your phone will be back at stock. To make it like it was before, follow again until step #17.Now into CWM select backup and restore, restore.Select 2012.03.18.17.50 for example (it says the date/time you created the backup) and it will restore your system before you followed the guide (all your contacs, sms, apps) but with one difference.Your phone will still be ROOTed and it will have CWM installed!
If your device doesn't respond (stops at kernel logo or triangle) download this ftf file and flash it like a kernel. This doesnt need unlocked bootloader. It is from another "Serres" guy just like me , leajian : Stock 2.1.1.A.0.6 ftf firmware by leaijan

Alright, then you should either change the name of this topic, because you claim this is for installing Custom ROMS and Kernels or separate the topic into 2, one for Custom ROMS only and one for Kernels + Custom ROMS.
My suggestion, nice guide btw.
EDIT : This guide "pushes" you to unlock bootloader and install another kernel, therefore I think it would be a good idea to clarify (ξεκαθαρίσεις) the optional steps.
Just two points: Screenshots might help. Also as far as i see you dont explain how to install custom kernels. Oh and maybe you should make the guide better to read, because as it now is it is quiet hard to read. Appart from that, good guide but anyone who is able to search the forums is also able to do all this.

p.s. : I'm right now making V6.It's going to boot faster, have ICS theme,Xperia S fonts,Beats by Dre mod from X8 and Xperia S wallpaper,New update script with the version of the rom, updated build.prop to choose ICS theme from first boot, fixed the issue of no pre-selected notification tone and ring tone and faster boot because of that very light and eye-candy,stock Sony Ericsson boot animation

Yeah its nice. But why should we have the same stuff all over the forums? If this was the first guide, ok, then its nice, but it is not the first one and at this point it is getting useless. Anyways, nice [email protected]

Now it looks real nice... Good work!
What if in this guide there where instructions on how to revert phone back to stock?
I think that someone (I mean you) should support my work too.
I am talking about my guide for installing Stock 2.1.1.A.0.6 Firmware for U20i, I think this should be referred here, because I am kinda pissed off to reply all those noobs on Q/A forum who are unable to find my guide!
The link for it is here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125587
You decide, I just suggested...
before you make any changes, i got suggestion here:
i bet you should look this thread (maybe you already seen this) see post #2 as example.
the idea is:
you should separate the guide, and link them to first post as content
so that, your guide will not only at the first post - or else, they will be a long post, since you want to include screenshot right, and links, descriptions. and why dont you put Wiki to some terms, like Root/Rom/Bootloader , so noobs will know what is bootloader for example.
the guides will be more like one-whole-place guide, regonize, neat, perfect and sticky thread, who knows
goodluck and all the best for you

Dear all,
I recently bought an LGP500 and im lovin it..!!!! Came across this forum and found that there are heaps of developments thats taking place in this platform! Really wanna thank each and everyone for their time and effort in trying to improvise on the OS.
I came across [UNOFFICIAL][ROM][stable:6.5.5,testing:6.6] CyanogenMod 7.1-RC1 (Android 2.3.4) and i really want to install it (or in that case, and good GB OS) over my froyo. I have been through a lot of threads on flashing and rooting, but im still very unclear about the whole process. Im not a computer geek, and all these jargon kinda make me feel like a bozo .
As a last resort, im trying out this thread. Would really appreciate if someone could spare some time and provide a simple walkthrough from - (a) backing up the original OS, (b) on through flashing and rooting, (c) to installing this custom ROM and (d) finally restoring it if needed for warranty purposes. Im pretty sure there are a lot of people like me who has difficulty in understanding all these processes and missing out some great developments.
I hope everyone understands this and wont consider this as one of those spam/duplicate threads, where the same Qs are repeated again and again...!
Thanks a lot for any support
Yes, the same Q's are repeated yet again. But I'm in a good mood today and I'll try not to give you much flak for it.
1. Root your phone, use z4root if android v2.2, use gingerbreak (both are apps) if on v2.2.1/2.2.2.
2. Install a custom recovery, of two kinds: AmonRa or ClockworkMod. Search for these threads.
3. Boot into recovery mode for backing up your current rom and installing a new one.
I hope this is a good summary. Before asking any further questions, check out the FAQ link in my signature.
Also read some stickies to enhance your knowledge. The_error has made a very good introduction thread on technical stuff.
In android, for using custom roms, first thing is to root. Then one has to install a recovery. Then make a nandroid backup from recovery. Then wipe everything from recovery and then flash your desired rom.
I suggest you do this:
1. Instal z4root app from market and Root your phone via it.
2. Install rom manager from market.
3. Install clockwork mod recovery via it.
Now you can go to recovery via rom manager or swith off and press and hold for about 15-30 seconds home+volume down+ power button.
Once you are in recovery, you are free to fly.
so which will be the most stable rom (no over clocking) for smooth usage, simple ui, internet and good video playback support. I herd there is problem with some roms not being able to play divx files.
I say rjtchn`s cm7 has the best battery I've had
Sent from my LG-P500 using XDA App
I can't find either z4root or Gingerbreak in the market. Searching XDA Developers I see several versions of z4root floating around, but since my Optimus V is 2.2.1, I gather I should be using Gingerbreak anyway? Pointers to the correct APK appreciated. Otherwise if I should be going the ADB route, pointers to a thread that has working drivers for the O V linked would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
OK, to answer my own Question, latest version (that I have tested works) of Gingerbreak is at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765
Now to figure out which kernel or rom to go with...

hey i am a noob and can't understand what to do with those softwares which are mentioned above, is there any step by step guide from starting to end??
any help would be highly appreciable
ok..i am a noob too.. so what all guys are saying is that, let me simplify:
There are basically 3 steps,
first, install a "gingerbreak" app, which is a apk (u can copy it ur mem.card and using file manager (its default in your stock android), u can install it from ur android after copying
secondly, install ROM Manager Free from Market and Install ClockworkMod Recovery from that app(dont fret about technical names..just do it), its easy as click and download
thirdly, download the Custom ROM like Mik's CM7 6.5.6 or something that pleases you and copy the necessary files posted in the Custom ROM'S page, all will be zip files...and restart the phone , By pressing vol.up+home+power button..u Will get to a different screen(that is recovery) , and make a nandroid backup as everyone says(all options are seen in the recovery) ...then clear cache..clean anything and everything..then install zip file from sd card...choose the Custom ROM and Restart (and lastly , forgot to tell you ,navigate by presssing volume keys and menu key as ok button)
..ok...maybe its not simple as it looks,,once you try..it will be easy as taking candy from a baby, thanks to all the guides and developers and all the ppl that supports it.
There are further step by step tutorials , if u search for it.. i was confused as hell too.. dont worry, U Will get the hang of it Noobz

you should really follow the instructions on the rom of your choice, but ill just give you the general scope of things:
1. root phone using one of the methods found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=901247
2. after rooting, flash custom recovery:
http://androidforums.com/getitnowmarketing/221388-custom-recovery-optimus-one-p500-thunderg.html
3. download rom of your choice from the link in #1 and move it to the root of your sdcard (which is directory /sdcard)
(3.5 you can use titanium backup to backup your apps. the sdcard should stay untouched while you flash your phone but im pretty sure that your internal memory will be erased. i didnt do this and i lost all of my apps so i dont really know where this step should go but i think it belongs here. there should be a folder on your phone with those backed up apps. move that folder to your computer. i didnt do this so im not sure if this is how it goes, sorry. btw this is optional.)
4. boot into recovery (with your phone off, hold home+vol down+power)
5. make a nandroid backup
6. wipe data/factory reset, wipe dalvik cache, wipe cache (follow the instructions on the rom that you chose)
7. flash (your rom name).zip
8. reboot phone (might take a while, thats normal)
the following is if you backed up your apps earlier:
9. move the folder with your apps backed up back to your phone in the exact same directory it was
10. restore it with titanium backup
someone please confirm this.
thanx guys

I didn't find any step-by-step tutorial to root .62 firmware for Xperia Neo/NeoV (Unlocked Bootloader), so I am writing one. Don't know whom to thank, but my thanks to the creator of recoveryNeo and RootXperia
Tutorial:
1. Connect your phone in mass storage mode and transfer RootXperia.zip [LINKED BELOW] to the root of your memory card.
2. Switch back to Media Transfer Mode so that Sony PCC detects your phone.
3. Turn on the USB Debugging from the Settings>Applications>Development and Unknown Sources from the Settings>Applications.
4. Open Flashtool, click on Flash icon and select Fastboot mode.
5. Select on the left hand side, Reboot into fastboot mode (via ADB).
6. After your phone reboots into fastboot mode (check the logs), click on Select kernel to HotBoot.
7. Select recoveryNeo.img [LINKED BELOW].
8. Wait about 1 minute for the recovery to load and it will show up on your screen.
9. From the recovery, choose to install ZIP from memory card.
10. Choose RootXperia and install it.
11. Simply reboot your phone, and you will get a rooted Neo/NeoV.
Hope you enjoyed the tutorial Ask me any question you have and sorry if it's already posted somewhere.

Hi aqshyt, thanks for your guide, but as reported by pandemic & madfysh similar guide already exist. So I am closing this thread and please continue the discussion there: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1431033
hello guys ..
first off, i have researched enough on these forums and found that there are many different ways to root the phone. each procedure is different and there are like 20 different images available.
and i'm a total idiot when it comes to dealing with the procedures mentioned here in the forums. i can't make any difference between .img, .sin and .ftf files. to me those are just extensions. what they do and which file to use, i have no sense with all that.
i have already unlocked the bootloader on my xperia s that had gingerbread 2.3
i have been suggested to upgrade first and then root the phone. for that i will have to re-lock the bootloader and there's a lengthy topic on that. plus, the warnings that scare me to death. it is specifically mentioned that i may end up bricking my phone if i re-locked the bootloader. the procedure for relocking involves downloading several files and doing lotsa stuff.
can't i at this point simply install a pre-rooted ics image and get up and running with a rooted ics xperia s?
which ics system image is best to load? should i download the one available on google docs? please for god sake, give me a step-by-step tutorial without using the jargons. dont worry about the beers, i'll definitely buy you a couple of beers whoever helped me out.
on a side note if u wish to call me names or tell me go change my diapers or something else, i'll do that later on. but please help me first lol. i'm a stupido playing with stuff i shouldn't be playing. but i want to learn and root my phone. my bf challenged me if i dare root the phone without bricking it .. so yea, lets see if i can handle this stuff. i really want to ...
***i'm really sorry for posting questions in the general forum. could a mod please move this thread to the q&a forum. appreciate ur help***
could anyone help me please? i'm waiting since the above post. been hours and i'm still stuck here with a phone that keeps restarting. my only options are the fastboot and flashtool. can someone give a link to the rooted xperia s ics image please? and also list the procedure for flashing the image on my phone in this situation? a million thanks to anyone who can help me ..
with unlocked bootloader, just flash any ICS firmware and the flash a custom kernel like SXS or SSpeed, those kernels autoroot your phone
hi yakandu,
you are a very experienced person on these forums. please help me with step-by-step tut. please include links to which ics firmware i should download and use. consider me a total idiot and please guide me. i have spent more than 48 hours and the phone is still off. god knows how many imp calls i have missed. i just wish that the phone is up and running with a rooted ics firmware. please help me sir.
should i download this firmware? http://xdafileserver.nl/index.php?d...STOM+ROMS/KA+Xperia+SSpeed/Android+4.0+(ICS)/
is that KA09_Xperia_SSpeed.zip a firmware or something else?
if yes, should i download that file and also the kernel associated with it?
please guide me.
At the very least, you should know how to read a forum, right?
There's a thread for you, called "[Xperia S][INFO][REF] All that u need to know before u begin". Have you read that? No? Why not?
It's here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526866
Next, I would suggest you flash the ICS from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599303
(hint, instructions are IN THE THREAD, read them instead of being asked to be spoonfed)
Then, flash this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1729280
How to flash? READ THE THREAD.
Download one of the ICS firmwares here: (any may do)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599303
Then proceed to STEP 3 here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1725078
EDIT: To have your phone rooted, install 1 of the 3 kernels availabe for SXS; Advanced Stock kernel, KA SSpeed kernel, or XSX kernel. They are all pre-rooted.
XSX kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768465

ever got into a book store? searching for a book on a particular topic but then u find 20 such books that relate to the topic? which one would u choose to go with? perhaps you should start reading all those 20 books and decide which one is the best for u. you could do that if you had loads of time to spend but if u had less time and your knowledge on that topic is zero. what are u going to do? you are going to ask someone who is knowledgeable.
its not about spoon feeding. its all about newbs like me who don't know nothing about this mobile world but still wish to learn. there is so much information on these forums that newbs can easily get confused. there are tens of different articles that provide loads of information but what can i do if there are like 10 different ways to root a phone. there are like 50 different roms, images, ftf, sin files and kernels and what not. i've read so much on these forums but all i see heavy techie words and jargons that are simply out of my understanding.
cant blame anyone for my little knowledge but just sayin that its pretty easy to get confused and do something that a newbie should not do. nevertheless, i'm sorry if i acted lower than your standards .. remember . i talked about the diapers .. guess i shud go get a new one cuz i've pissed myself enough in these last two days ..

EDIT: To have your phone rooted, install 1 of the 3 kernels availabe for SXS; Advanced Stock kernel, KA SSpeed kernel, or XSX kernel. They are all pre-rooted.
XSX kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768465

ronin, thank you a BIG time. this is exactly what i wanted. i could read the threads for newbs and also checked various different roms (images) and kernels but i wasn't sure of which one to use and which one is pre-rooted. you've given me direct links to the roms i should be using. thank you so much.
i have flashed the second one (the ics one) using the flashtool: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599303
my phone is booting normal :victory:
I have downloaded the KA SSpeed kernel v2 and about to flash that on the phone. I have gone through this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1761778
Code:
== Installation instructions ==
Important! Only for unlocked bootloader
1) Flash the kernel:
- Open up fastboot and type: fastboot flash boot kernel.elf
2) Enjoy it!!
I am not responsible for damage to your device, use at own risk!
open up fastboot.
does that mean shut down the phone, press and hold the volume up button and then plug the usb cable to computer. the blue light lit up and then i can run that fastbot command?
where do i keep the kernel files? should i put them in the fastboot folder?
and i dont see any kernel.elf file in the sspeed kernel folder. there are 3 folders: customize, meta-inf and system folders. no other files in the ka09_xperia_sspeed folder.
i'm pretty confused .. please help.
edit: should i use the flashtool to flash kernel?
i mean, i can fastboot the phone (blue light lit)
then i can run the flashtool (64 bits) and then flash icon .. fastboot mode .. and then click on "select kernel to flash"
is this what i should be doing?
Use this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1729280
Download ics11 for fastboot.
Put the file in fastboot folder.
Open adb and type (fastboot flash boot ics11.elf) and enter then while the phone is off press vol up and connect the usb.
Edit: I don't know if you can use flashtools with fastboot mode to achieve the same thing cause I never use it for fastboot mode.

I'm so sorry for the confusion. I posted the wrong link for the instructions for flashing custom kernels. Here's the correct one:

There's a section there on flashing custom kernel, just scroll down. Just download fastboot drivers and fastboot binaries if you haven't yet. And instead of the "Xperia_SSpeed_kernel_v2.zip" download the "kernelv2.elf".

hi ronin, no problems .. i've already installed the ics11.elf kernel. is there any difference between the two? is ics11.elf better or kernelv2.elf is better? are both pre-rooted or will I have to root the phone after installing either? i read on that page ics11.elf is autoroot. i guess it means the phone will be rooted automatically after installing ics11.elf, please correct me if i'm wrong ..
Install any app that need root access like adfree...

IMPORTANT !!!!!!
ONCE ROOTED,
Download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup&hl=en and backup all your apps(on SD card)
Step 3(next step) of this post will reset(factory reset) your phone.
BACKUP ALL YOUR CONTACTS AND CALENDER ON GOOGLE
BACKUP ALL YOUR MESSAGES AND IMPORTANT STUFF !!
MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR SD CARD ON PC FOR SAFETY (THIS WILL BE DONE AFTER ALL BACKUPS ARE DONE I.E. LAST BACKUP)
Step 3: UNLOCK BOOTLOADER
If you have no idea about this, read this
Why exactly is this a big deal? For the general population, this doesn’t matter. However, for the modding community, locked bootloaders are simply a pain. When the bootloader is locked, certain portions of the device are unable to be customized such as recoveries or kernels. A lot of the time, when rooting a device, the first step requires the bootloader to be unlocked or bypassed. So, depending on the device in question and the will of the developer, creative Android hacking has allowed some devices with locked bootloaders to run custom ROMs. Generally, these devices aren’t as stable as they could be if the device was able to be completely customized from the ground up.
1) http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/ and follow the steps carefully ( skip step 13, we've already done that )
IF YOU GET STUCK ON STEP 14,DO THIS
to navigate to android SDK folder, use this command(without quotes)
"cd location_of_your_android_SDK\platform-tools"
for me, it was - "C:\androidSDK\platform-tools"
2)If you followed the rules, you will have an unlocked bootloader
3)Yipeeee !!!
4)Dont worry about your apps, they're still on your SD card
5)Restore only the apps which are very important and you cant live without them for a day..
Step 4: INSTALLING CWM(CLOCK WORK MOD / RECOVERY)
if you dont know what cwm is, just read but dont follow the steps to install it
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile...-and-how-to-use-it-on-android-complete-guide/
1) http://www.mediafire.com/?73xv18tht0e8zt4 download cwm
2)Connect your phone in MSC (mass storage mode) mode and wait until SD card available to PC
3)increase your display time out to 2 minutes
4)Enable USB debugging and allow 3rd party/unknown sources
5)open the downloaded folder(extract first)
6)Run install-cwm1.cmd
7)sit back and enjoy!!!
8)once finished, you'll have cwm installed!!!!
9)to check if you have cwm, turn off phone
10)turn on and when sony logo appears, repeatedly press vol down button until you reach a blue colored menu, if successful, cwm is installed properly!! if not, please comment or reinstall it.
11)navigation in cwm-
go up-vol up
go down-vol down
select option-home button
previous menu-back button
thanks siddharthsure93
Step 5: TAKING A NANDROID BACKUP
if you have no idea about this, read this
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/38468-nandroid-backup-what-is-it-and-did-i-need-it/
make sure that your sd card has at least 1gb free space and you have 50% battery charge
1)Hoping that you have cwm installed, turn off phone
2)Enter cwm by repeatedly press vol down button when sony logo appears
3)go to "backup and restore"
4)select "backup"
5)wait for 10-15 minutes till your phone is backuped
6)now you have a copy of your current phone and rom memory
we do this to restore phone if something goes wrong
NOW YOU HAVE PREPARED YOUR PHONE TO GET CM9 OR ANY FU*KIN ROM !!! :good::good:
IF I GO WRONG SOMEWHERE, PLEASE CORRECT ME WE ALL LEARN FROM OUR MISTAKES.
PLEASE PRESS THE THANKS BUTTON IF I HELPED YOU

Im with a neo v with A.0.62 firmware
Which cannot be rooted
But i have already unlocked bootloader
what can I do now?
If i directly flash in JB Kernel and rom, will I be able to have root permissions? Do i even need to care about my .62 firmware if i want to go into CM10?
What should i do? Thanks!

You will need to root your phone first. Installing a custom ROM won't automatically give you root acces. In fact, I don't think you will be able to install a custom ROM without ClockWork Mod Recovery which needs root access first. Follow Sony's own rooting guide here: http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/41119?start=0&tstart=0. Then install X-Parts from the Play Store to get CWM.
Once you have CWM you can install any appropriate custom ROM you like.
Oh is that gonna be painful

Use flash tool and an ftf file to update to ICS. You can go with 0.587 version for example.
After update as you are on unlocked bootloader you should flash a custom ICS kernel like suave, night elf or any other ICS compatible. This will give you root and cwm.
Look at the stickys. You will find all you need.

You can always relock the bootloader (don't know what method you used to unlock, so can't advise on how to relock - I only know how if unlocking was done through Sony). Update the firnware to stock Sony ICS using Sony's PC Companion. Then root it using Sony's rooting guide. After rooting you can unlock the bootloader again. Install X-Parts and CWM. Then try out the custom ROMs+kernels to your heart's content.

On the other hand, unlocking via official method gives you an easy option to Relock bl via flashtool!
There's a thread by Blagus on how to do that!
Btw even Relocking via setool is an option for unofficially unlocked bl users!
So there's always an option!

Yes. That's the tutorial I'm talking about. I only mentioned what I did because I've done it before. After relocking use PC Companion to update your phone. Or the Sony phone repair program. I don't remember which. If you try both (like I did) one (or both) of them will work. But still you are out of warranty. You know that, don't you?

I think you are right. It's basically about losing DRM. I don't know what it is and of what use it is. All I know is I've never missed it. If you are into trying out custom ROMs then unlocking the bootloader is a must because certain custom ROMs need custom kernels. To install custom kernels you must have an unlocked bootloader.
Hi I am a complete noob, so far I only managed to unlock bootloader and it took me almost WHOLE DAY. I want to root my phone, I have no tiniest clue on how to do it for Xperia Go. There are so many methods for other phones I am getting so confused over this. People don't seem to want to help noobs out too much here I noticed, and often "use search" is being said. Well, I did use search and A LOT, still I can't even find how to get started I don't know which suitable apps I need (there's so many, I have no idea).
Model: Xperia Go st27i
Version: 6.0.B.3.184
I found this thread (Sony Xperia GO property root for 6.0.B.3.184 + CWM recovery v5.5.0.4) is this the thing I should be looking if I want to root my phone? All I see here is that he shows what commands to input, with no tutorial at all. I have no idea where to enter these commands, where to unpack files -_- nothing.
I am really hoping some good person helps me out on this one
I have given up, nobody helps me, no tutorials help and nothing works... I tried SuperOneClick for rooting, it didn't work. I tried the dos app from thread "Root MANY ANDROID!" also did not work. I did not try the link from my OP cause that thread has absolutely 0 tutorials and too much chit chatting in comments.
tl;dr nothing works for rooting my xgo
use flashtool to root if nothing works..
Try to find in sola development section
Thanx me if it helped!

Ok, first things that you need to check:
- Do you have installed Sony oficial "Sony PC Companion" software?
- are your phone recognised by your computer after installing oficiall "Sony PC Companion" software?

The most confusing thing right now is, do I have to update my phone by PC companion first? Or I can download v14 rom (Firmware 6.1.1.B.1.54) and flash it on as it is? It confuses me cause I wanna be sure that I download the right thing not the wrong one -_-
Thanks for all your replies, at least I am moving somewhere now
Yes, download v14 rom, extract archive, run instal.bat, folow instructions on your screen!
Make sure your sdcard have free space for rom.zip, I sugesting you to free your sdcard (1gb free space)...

Thank you so much for supporting me here, I am downloading it and will follow the instructions. One last question for now.... if I install this rom, is my phone already rooted then?
Yes, after installing v14 rom and after installing (later) memory_tweak, your phone will be up to date (mean everything needed) ! Only your last step need to be: install superuser from market (mean superuser, not super su !), and you are done! Going now to my work, will help you later if something missing

Okay I have done a mistake LOL. I forgot to place rom.zip on sdcard. Can I flash it back to GB somehow and finish this ICS install after I place the zip there. I can't see my phone in windows and PC companion can't detect it either.
So right now I only have recovery mode, and no zip on sdcard
In Recovery, go to Mounts and Storage, USB Storage and select Mount. Then connect phone to pc and you can access like a pendrive
