Why do people still buy car chargers? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Inverters (devices that plug into car lighter sockets and convert power to an ac socket) are cheap, similar in price to car phone chargers.
Is there some specific advantage to car chargers that I'm not aware of?

Well, I have 3 inverters, and every one of them produces noise. If I am using the phone for videos, movies, or other audio through the stereo of the vehicle, and the phone is charging off an inverter, I hear something similar to white noise. With DC car chargers, not a problem.
Also, an inverter takes more juice from your battery to charge the phone. Important if you are somewhere for an extended period of time with the vehicle off.

Because most car chargers are very cheap and work in any car. Most people dont want a big clunky inverter sticking out when you can have a low profile USB plug sticking out with a cable plugged into it. Cheap inverters are unreliable, often cause noise, and are just plain ugly sticking out of the dash.

As said, inverters are quite inefficient and use a ton of power, and smaller is a big plus too. Who wants to carry their charger around with them all of them all the time? My OEM charger is by my bed for charging overnight, I have an older Moto charger at work, and a moto in my car.

PORTABILITY!
-Once you go NOTE, you'd say 4 inches a Joke

Also "most" anyone who has owned an htc / Samsung, or any brand that uses the micro USB standard already has a car charger that works with the note. I get so tired of accessories not needed for new models when it's a universal standard. previous gen cables / chargers will work just fine

I will only use my inverter because i don't wanna kill my phones battery. Some folks don't mind shorter battery life and use the outlet to save space. I also use for my laptop for the same reason.

Often you can get around the buzzing by using a pure-sinewave inverter. One of the best on the market is the Morningstar 300 - so efficient it doesn't even need a fan. Which usually fails about 2 weeks after buying the cheap mod-sine inverters.

I havn't encountered a argument for this that is claims both real world effects AND facts to back it up. Mostly theories and all that jazz that equates to taking days off a batteries life over years of use in the worse case situation.
The most believable scenerios are the ones that take piss poor quality hardware into account and that is a fault of buying junk chargers and not one of the charging method. And ones that take charging characteristics of past battery technology into account and not current.
However please feel free to elaborate, I am by no means claiming to have read and understand everything out there, although links would also be greatly appreciated too.

There are chargers that regulate the voltage that is ultimately sent to your phone, but many don't and I have seen between 16-18 volts from my outlet depending on rpm's and loads. That's gonna charge your phone too fast and from what I've read lithium batteries are not designed for this. I've seen soooo many people with poor battery life and have "always used there car chargers".

Factory wall charger conspiracy

Is it just me or are the cords on the stock charger that comes with phone getting shorter and shorter?
So my question is, does anyone know of a wall charger with a longer cord?
Thanks

Shorter the cord, quicker the charge i believe. I have a 6 foot cable i use to charge my Gnote, but it's noticable slower (and its shorted for rapid charging). I have tested different AMP chargers too, but the OEM shorty is the best.
I know what you mean though, it's a pain in the ass sometimes when it ain't long enough
Cable length wont matter up to the Max length of 15', however I have seen some issues with printers and wont go over 12'. The quality cable can matter though.
I have noticed they seem to be getting shorter though. Maybe a 16" cable cost $0.02 instead of the 20" cable that costs $0.03

I use a drop cord to get the charger close to me while I'm using the PC.
I like to plug-in and use the phone before bed. I replaced the Samsung one for my old HTC cable. I doubt it charges fast enough, but we shall see

Low gauge 10 feet, you might see some resistance and a slower charge, but if you're like me and you generally charge overnight, no biggie, plus more room to have it on the bed monitoring how much your wife keeps you up Electric Sleep or other such apps

I have 4 batteries, desk charger, car charger, an bed charger. A dead batter is not an option for me. I just wanted some longer cables. But at 12 feet there shouldn't be any real noticeable drop, especially when used with a fast charge supply. You start to see drops when you hit 15'-20' that start to effect things.

No just get another phone with a bigger battery or removable battery. Or buy two DNA's, 2 phones would take up less space. When one phone dies turn the other one on.:silly:

It really doesn't matter which port, I don't believe the DNA uses more than an amp to charge, but you can't damage it by using the 2A port.
This is correct! The phone decides how much charge to pull preventing incorrect chargers from damaging

use the 1 amp. When using car chargers that have 1 and 2 amp choices, my phones have always charged @ 500mah on the 2 amp side but 1 amp on the 1 amp side. I think its to protect the phone. There are battery apps that will tell you how much charge the phone is getting.
http://www.amazon.com/5600mAh-Exter...d=1353451168&sr=8-2&keywords=external+battery
I use the 5600mA version (though only has a charge rate of 500mAh, but the biggest one can even charge a laptop and it goes for less than $45, the smallest one is about the size of two fingers put together and the largest one about the size of a 2nd phone (though probably a bit thicker) and has a 3Ah max charging speed
edit: i was looking at the 10000 mA version and it seems that the astro3E doesn't have the laptop charging, but i found the regular one (astro3) that does have the output for laptops, but is also selling for $60.
What about MintyBoost? I'm planning to make a few. The main feature is that it works with standard AA batteries (or AAA or whatever gives it from 1.5 to 4.5 volts or so, rechargeable or not it's not picky about source) and you can hot-swap them in the field with fresh or even cannibalized ones (you can easily "increase" the amount of power you carry with you without buying another expensive charger by just having a stash of cheap rechargeable AA).
Anyone tried? Any bad things about it?
I just got the EasyAcc 12000mAh one from Amazon for $40 and I highly recommend it. 12,000 mAh so roughly 5 full charges for the DNA. I'd post a link but I'm new.
I've got the Motorola P4000 from VZW. It's nearly perfect. The form factor is exactly what I want...very very thin. It also has a built in MicroUSB cable, which tucks nicely into the lip around the unit. Both of these are features I wanted. It also accepts a USB cable to use a separate cable if you prefer, but the integrated cable is huge to me. It's recognized as a 1A AC charger and charges fast.
There's just one fairly big problem though. If I'm in certain areas, presumably where signal is a bit iffy, it'll kill my signal when I plug it in with the integrated cable. Interestingly it seems not to do that if I use a separate cable -- even if the phone and the charger are in the exact same spot as when I used the integrated cable. So it seems like there may be some kind of interference that isn't being shielded with the built in cable. It's a big issue, but I haven't yet found another device with the form factor, integrated cable, and 1A charging. And in most places, it doesn't happen. I just have to keep an eye on it if I'm using it and expecting a call.

Charging issue

Okay, this is a weird one. When charging my phone, almost every single time, it will charge up to about 76-83%, and then stop. However, if I unplug it and then plug it back in it will resume charging like normal up to 100%. I mean this is bizarre...is it a battery calibration issue, perhaps?
Edit: Happens on any/every ROM I use.

You mean the usb box from ur galaxy s2.... If so each box may have a different output for each phone..... For instance when i use my daughters charger it takes 5 times longer to charge my og than the og charger so that may be ur problem.
Via LG OG running Rootbox 4.2.2
Had the same thing too and as described in the post above it is in fact due to the output. Just compared my old but still kicking s2 and my og charger and the og charger has a much greater output.
Yeah lgog charger is 5v 1.2a. It's very nice. We also gotta qualcomm technology called quick charge or something like that that enables the battery to charge substantially faster without damaging itself. It's a logic chip in the phone and improved battery chemistry from LG. Asian manufacturers have a huge portfolio of products and are weirdly driven to diversify in all directions. LG has their own chemical company, and that's who makes our pimp batteries. I stuck with HTC for 7 years, but if LG flagship phones continue to have decent development then I'll probably stick with LG for a while. It's cool that they manufactured the entire phone from scratch except the SoC, no other company can really say that besides Samsung. And they're both Korean companies. Btw, south Korea is a great place to vacation.

It looks as though I need to pay attention a bit more. I was using the LG wall charger, however, I wasn't using the right cable. I was using my Samsung cable. The Samsung cable is longer and reaches to where I can charge and play with the phone at night. I'll try the cable it actually came with and see if it continues to pull the same trick. The LG cable is definitely thicker.
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda app-developers app
I totally agree with you on the length of the cable and is why I was also using the s2 charger as well. If you need the extra length you can probably get by using an s3 charger. I steal my girlfriend's s3 charger from time to time just because I want a little more mobility than two feet and it charges the phone just fine with very similar output ratings....... 1.0 amps compared to 1.2 amps of the og charger.
I've had something similar happen recently. The phone will either charge extremely fast or extremely slow. I usually charge my phone at about 30% and sometimes it will charge fully in about 90 minutes and others it will take up to 8 hours, with the slowest part being in that 73-87% range you describe. I always use the LG charger and cable because its the only one that I have. I'm running code fire's CFX ROM if that helps anyone out.
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda app-developers app
That's some weird stuff. I'm getting good performance right now using the stock cable with a belkin 1A cigarette lighter to USB adapter. But last week I grabbed a cheapo Chinese retractable cable that was in my wife's car and plugged it into the built in USB port in the car (don't know what it's rated output is) and the battery drained VERY fast... Roughly one percent every minute or 2. Freaked me out... Certainly appears to me this phone is temperamental about cables...

yeah had the same probably with a car charger with my og and to think about it my s2 as well, I travel a lot for my job and constantly use gps while traveling and I've found that a lot of those cheapo car chargers you pick up from gas stations may charge the phones while inactive don't really charge them very well while in use. I could watch my battery percent fall while charger on both my s2 and og while using navigation, ended up finding a high output charger at a truck stop with a cord the size of a cb radio lol and havent haven't had any issue with it since. This is with stock and custom rom, even reverted back to stock a couple times to make sure that it wasn't the custom firmware that was causing the issue. Guess the makers of cheap chargers haven't caught up with the big batteries todays smart phones pack, should of hold on to my bag phone charger a little longer lol!!

That's on thing i do miss about having a removable battery though, is the fact that a large part of my job is in very dusty dirty environments ....i.e. steel, aluminum mills and other high temp dusty and dirty as hell places is that i could remove my battery and feel safe while using a little contact cleaner. Now og days i play it safe with air. But either way i don't think that has anything to do with the use of cheap chargers lol. Best bet would be to stick with oem or pay the extra price tag for those high out put chargers that att offer.

Car chargers work much slower than a wall charger because of the output of it. If you have the screen on, using gps, and listening to music at the same time it won't charge or it will actually drain.

Probably, the car charger is putting out just enough amps to activate charging mode, but not enough to charge with any discernable speed
I would look for a more reputable charger brand. I have found that cheapie chargers just don't perform well. Especially with the 2 amp requirement our devices need. A 1 amp verizon mobile charger with the micro usb factory attached and ment realistically for my wife's s3 1 amp requirement is adequate to provide a stable but long charge time for my note 2. Remember, some power distribution is lost simply in the usb connection between a cheap 1 amp charger and the usb cable plugged into it. Another useful addition for mobile charging would be an ac/dc inverter that allows your factory home 2 amp charger to plug into your vehicle. That would be reasonably clean 110 v ac to dc at 2 amp from your genuine samsung home charger. Better chance of getting the charging capacity you require. Also, don't forget to chech your usb cable. It may look fine, but could be stretched or damaged causing a bad charge connection. But definitely avoid cheap car chargers. Not only can they work sporadically, they may actually damage your phone.

I'm not very familiar with the iSound charger, does it provide a high enough Amp output?
When I got my Galaxy Tab 10.1v a couple of years ago, I bought some adapters that feature a resistor and a swap some pins around to ensure the device goes into charge mode and not data mode when plugged into a PC. The resistor enables a higher Amp output than you get from a normal USB port. I've checked ebay recently and found that there are even better adapters out now than what I bought in 2011, much more low profile.
Maybe one of these could help?

Thanks for your help
the output opportunity of your mobile power bank to produce the current with enough power Is significant . As example u can see my mobile Iconbit charger which produces two current opportunities: 2.1 A and 1A.
The first allows to charge my phone very fast, the second allows not to lose phone battery chargŠµ during walking with maps enabled.
So, may be your's power bank is not quite good to output good current. may be it was very good in past but battery have lost the capacity and opportunity to produce current.
Also I've throwd to the garbage a lot of adapters which had lost their opportunity to put goodie high current, a lot of famous brands also. During the year and half of Note 1 I've changed five batteries and three wall chargers. some changes I have bought to replace did not charge my phone.

the output opportunity of your mobile power bank to produce the current with enough power Is significant .

Some good points here - particularly about charges and cables to degrade and lose their capability to provide a quality current - I've had to dispose of a few cables and chargers as well.
Still, the adapters that discussed earlier can help to a certain extent.
