What Kernel do you prefer? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

After trying a few, which kernel do you prefer and run as your normal kernel?

For me, I have to stick with Entropy's Daily Driver kernel. Its just rock solid for me and its nice to know that we have a dedicated kernel dev who is always looking to better his kernel and when there were some problems he went through his whole patch-a-day to try and pinpoint the issues and resolve them. My hats off to him.

Im with you. EDD is my fav.

they are both extremely solid. I slightly prefer Siyah only because I tend to get better battery life when combined with the "init.doh" scripts

+1 for Entropy... been rock in for weeks now with zero issues and great battery life. I am so excited to see what he has in store for us now that we have ics source.

Weren't all these threads nuked before?
Entropy always, but if I wanted something experimental I tried Siyah.

We dont do "POST THE BEST ROM" threads. This is a poll to see what people run.

I am using Entropy and it has been rock solid. No freezes or anything. For me with Siyah I would have multiple lockups throughout the day that I had to reboot to get past. Granted I was using Siyah on cm7 though as that may make a difference.

Siyah 2.6.7 is by far the best kernel for performance and battery life

i use Entropy's. I've had the best luck with it. However, I do like the Siyah recovery menus much better.

I always use siyah.

if you mean CWM rec menus, Entropy brought the latest one in recent DDs.

The recovery menus with the siyah kernal are much more compact. It's annoying have to scroll through all the -NO- options when trying to flash something. Don't have to go through all that when you have the siyah kernel.

Looking for testers for a ROM

If you are interested and able to provide helpful feedback, I am looking for a few testers. My rom is based on 2.3.4 and is seriously debloated (120MB). If you need stock apps, this rom may not be for you.
What base is it? (not just android version)

UCKH7 base
UCKH7 modem
Siyah 2.6.7 kernel
Oh damn... that is tempting. I got the absolute best battery life on UCKH7, but man, switching roms is so much work, and the one I currently have is really stable. If only I had an extra SGSII

Making another swirl into the ROM business I see brother...welcome back
Yea, I'm actually on my 7th revision of this rom
I'll bite. With nandroid what is there to lose?

Count me in!
I would like to try it, might as well because I could test and then nandroid back to my current rom!

I'm interested but not too interested in Siyah kernel. No offense to any devs I'm just a lot happier with Entropys DD Kernel.

You can flash Entropy's kernel after flashing the ROM.
Sent from myphone.
Just to let everyone know there are known issues with this ROM which is why I am doing private testing. Everyone uses their phone differently and I am always surprised at what kind of feedback I get. I will PM everyone with the download link and all you need to do is PM me back your findings.

Haha I know.
But if Siyah was the intended kernel my test won't be consistent with what is expected.

You could let me know if using DD has a negative effect on the rom. But I guess you'd have to use it at least once with siyah in order to compare.

If you need more testers let me know. I'll play around with it and try a bunch of stuff. Can i drink beer while i do it?
No more testers until the next release. Everyone has been extremely helpful in finding bugs so I thank all of you.
Cool, good luck with it, bro.

Slim ICS with another kernel?

Wondering if you guys are using any other kernels with SLIM ICS. If so, which one do you recommend?
the stock slim kernel is pretty good, but sub zero works well too. I'm currently running slim 3.6 with sub zero #80, although I'm sure there is probably a newer version out there. Check the vibrant threads on rootzwiki for updates on that kernel.
I think others have had success with icy glitch too. Also, the kissed kernels (from passion/euphoria) should work too.
Just make sure to run the kernel cleaning script before flashing a new kernel to avoid any weird complications.

Agree with HeavyA.
Subzero's #80 is my favorite at the moment ^^

Battery life results

I apologize for I know that similar threads have been created but the last one is fairly old. I have mostly been running AOKP for the last few weeks but I recently tried out serendipity- I'll say that I do prefer an AOSP style rom over a samsung rom. I do like customization but battery life is a priority to me. Can someone please give some input to what rom/kernal/governors are being used to maximize battery life?
There is no simple answer to this question. All Kernels and ROMs are good - please refer to Entropy's battery drain thread for common issues affecting battery drain.
Some kernels however offer UV ability e.g. Siyah which allows u more flexibility.
Having said this I saw about the same battery life on most of the ICS roms I tried.
I am currently evaluating custom GB roms to see if the battery life is better.
Aokp and fluxxi. Pegasuq governor or something like that. Don't expect any other help from people. Smh

Thank you, I will try the fluxi kernel. I know i'm most likely only to receive an open-ended answer at best. It's just that honestly I have tried different combinations on my own without too much success

Sure that works for you but other kernels/governors are better for other people. That's what we're trying to get at so there's no need for a smh.

Yeah I understand that, it's just you would think that several people might say "woah hey this particular kernel has amazing bettery life!" But apparently that is not the case...

we've trained most not to say crap like that. its all dependent on user, apps, and device.
just play with them, find one that works best for you and your setup.

How to make wifi better

Hey
This last weekend I rooted and installed different roms to try. Most of them still have poor wifi performance, just like stock.
Is there a way to make wifi better? Maybe flashing a new kernel, a new modem or something?
Thanks.
Modems/Radios are meant for Service network provider thingies, like your signal. Whereas, Kernels are for more "internal" things, they affect battery life and WIFI.
so i suggest you flash a custom kernel that best suits you
I hope this helps!
Thanks!
I was thinking of trying siyah kernel. Is it the best one for Wi-Fi performance or is there another one better?

If you're on ICS, Siyah and Franco both worked well for me, if you're on JB, Siyah alpha/beta builds are the only option until the i9300 sources are released.

I cant quite tell cause it's a matter of how you set it.. but imo, siyah is the bomb
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
I flashed siyah 1.5.3 with CM10 teamasek rom but wifi still doesnt work. I dont options for wifi inside Stweaks.
I will keep trying with other roms.
What I want is the best combo for the best wifi performance. Best combo rom - kernel - whatever. I really need to improve my wifi performance at home.

Preferred CM9 ROMS?

Not to start a controversy...but I just wanted to get an idea of what people are using and how they are enjoying their CM9 roms.
Any input or opinions will be cool.

You mean what ROM we are running?
I'm using (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ at the moment, it's been working pretty solid for me.
You really can't go wrong trying out the various latest builds, Gray's is pure CM9 with no tweaks added, the rest have various things added/modified/removed.
Best way is to try them out, as everyone is going to have different opinions.
The builds are all pretty much the same, just small tweaks here and there, but Snuzzo's kernel is a beast, so Rage is the winner for me at the moment.
Rage all the way
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda app-developers app
Neo's Rage is awesome the inverted gapps are sick.
I prefer plain CM9, so I'm using Gray's ROM. Replaced the kernel with the Super Charge kernel though
Maybe this is a good place to ask: I'm running Gray's 9/21 CM9 build, does Snuzzo's kernel work with it? I'd like to give that Wheatley governor a try.
Which phone are we talking about here? Cm9 and kernels aren't universal right? Still learning.

Yea, I just went back to it because of stability problems with AOKP. Snuzzo's kernel works great with it. Screen-off battery life is crazy on Wheatley.
