So I purchased a UK unlocked Touch Pro and had it shipped to the US. While I hope there will be an ATT radio rom flash in the future, I have a quick question for the veterans out there:
On the Touch Pro, under the Phone Band settings, you can select "GSM(1900+850)+UMTS(1900+850)"
When I do this all I receive is Edge on ATT, but aren't the UMTS bands correct already for ATT under this setting?

There are several threads on this topic already...Here's one:

Thanks, I appreciate the reply, but I had read through that thread. I understand that the device is likely in need of a reprogrammed ROM to activate the hardware because at the end of the day it is not working. My question is specifically if the phone setting is allowing me to select the two ATT UMTS bands already why wouldn't I get 3G speed?

I have the UK version of the phone as well and I have the same issue. I have selected the right bands for both UMTS and GSM but all I get is EDGE. The reason for this is either a hardware limitation (no radio antenna to support 850/1900 UMTS bands (let's hope not) or the factory installed radio firmware does not include those bands or all those da#@ iPhone 3G users are hogging all the UMTS bandwidth . Hopefully all we need is to flash a new radio or ROM to unlock these bands. Just because you can select this band in phone settings does not mean the radio or hardware support it.
I guess I am crossing my fingers along with you . Thanks!

Even though this is for T-Mobile im sure if tmo gets unlocked att will to. Watch that and post there if someone cracks it they will post on that thread.
I have a question for the guys only getting EDGE when they have the correct bands set.......do you have a 3G enabled SIM card? (aka a USIM, some networks require you use one for the 3G to be utilised correctly).
Hi, in answer to your question, yes I have a 3G compatible SIM. I literally plucked it out of my TyTN 2/ TILT and put it in to the Touch Pro. The Touch Pro automatically found the ATT network, and when I went in to check bands I realized that there was an option for the US UMTS bands. I am guessing that others have been right when they have stated that just because there is a menu option it doesn't mean the radios are properly enabled.

So currently you are using a HTC branded Raphael? Could you post your ROM/Radio details? (device info in settings/system) Also your ROM build (settings/system->about)?

I have a 3G enabled SIM, been using it with the Kaiser for the past year with good 3G reception. I now have the HTC branded Raph (UK version) with no 3G reception, only EDGE. Here's the info on my ROM/Radio:
ROM: 1.90.405.1 WWE (8/1/08)
Build: 19965.1.2.3
Radio: 1.02.25.19
OK so it seems the only radios actually in these Raphaels at the moment are all 1.02.25.19, once we have a decent way to flash a different radio stack to it we can see if it makes any difference both in the bands available and some of the reception issues we are seeing so far.
I'm not an expert in this area at all, far from it, but but was reading Black's post about his AT&T model and he has 1.01.25.16. Is this what you're going to flash it to once the HardSPL is completed given that you know his radio supports AT&T 3G?
I'm trying to keep up...
Has anybody heard an ETA for Hardspl? I know they where testing it. But any rumors on a timeframe?
My new UK Touch Pro (radio ver 1.02.25.19) is exhibiting this same behavior on AT&T... I have tried all combinations of those dropdowns under phone options without any luck. It does seem very strange that HTC put the US 3G bands in the band dropdown, but included radio software that doesn't support it...
... Why would HTC bother removing hardware supported bands in the software?

Because they couldn't get it working well enough in time for the release date, I guess. Similar to what appears to have been the case with the Diamond. The US isn't their main concern at the moment, so delaying a US-compatible version for now in or der to get it to the rest of the world on time.
Either that or it's deliberate act to slow down the grey imports until they do a proper US release in hand with the local carriers.
If AT&T doesn't want to subsidize the Pro/Diamond, HTC doesn't really have to worry about putting in 1900 support. And honestly, AT&T is too busy with the iPhone 3G to care about HTC.
On the other hand, I'm sure HTC is very interested in getting in on T-mo 3G (1700/2100). By downplaying 1900 (which is being eaten up by the iPhone, anyway), HTC can gear up for the fresh 1700/2100 band. Paired with Android, HTC could potentially gain a big chunk of US 3G networks.
I'm a touch pro user in Canada on the Rogers network. I too hope that HTC releases a radio that allows 3g network access. I don't think its a hardware limitation because it wouldn't really make sense to make two versions of the same phone just to disable parts of the radio.
I disagree with the statement that AT&T is too busy with the iPhone 3G to care about the Touch Pro. The fact is that the target audience for the two phones are entirely different and that a considerable amount of AT&T corporate customers still require their employees to use PPC based phones (even if the iPhone 3G supports email push).
Corporate standards don't usually move as quickly as they should, so of course AT&T is interested in extracting more money from customers that purchased a Tilt over the past 8 months and want to upgrade, but are not allowed to use an iPhone.
If HTC removed support because they were unable to get the software functioning properly, I can live with that. EDGE for a few months while HTC readies a new radio software package is fine... EDGE while HTC readies new hardware is not.

If AT&T weren't interesting in pushing the Touch Pro, HTC wouldn't have went to the trouble and expense of making a specific hardware revision (PTT button) for them. That's not something HTC are gonna do just for the hell of it on a quiet Sunday afternoon.
Maybe I didn't read the thread well enough but did you try and flash the AT&T ROM that was posted? Maybe that might work!
I currently have a telus HTC HERO in black but i am selling that one and buying a white HTC HERO.
The white HERO that im looking to buy is a european model.
I looked at the HTC website to see if there was any difference between the two phones and i found this:
HSDPA/WCDMA: 900/2100 MHz for Europe and 850/1900 MHz for USA.
So my question is will the european HERO work on canadian networks providers (FIDO, ROGERS)....would i have any issues with getting good signal connections and optimal speeds for 3G
thanks in advance
The Canadian GSM networks & AT&T in the US use a different 3G frequency than what GSM networks use in Europe & T-Mobile in the US. Due to this an European Hero on a Canadian network will not get 3G.
thank you for the quick reply.
I guess i will have to look for another seller.
Thanks again
Further, In Canada, networks like Bell and Telus are ONLY 3G, so without the North American 3G bands, you won't get any signal. I think Rogers has 2G, though. I'm not sure exactly which networks do and don't, but I know that at least some don't.

Umm, no....
As far as I know, the Bell and Telus joint network is 3G only. I don't know if the carriers have a deal to use EDGE from Rogers or areas not covered by 3G.
To the OP: Why don't you get a Hero from Telus? It's the same one as the European version, but works on the North American 3G band.

I dont like going on 3 year contracts so i buy my phones from resellers on craigslist. The seller specified that his HERO was from Europe so i wanted to find out if it would work. That was the only option at the moment but now I do have a Telus HERO that I bought from some other seller.
Thanks for the help btw.
Hello,
I recently bought a HTC HD2 and gotten unlocked to work with my ATT sim card also I had someone install the 2.2 Froyo Android software using Cyanogen Mod 6. Since I had the phone I have only been using Edge network and I know for sure we have 3g coverage. How can I get my 3G network to work on my phone? Please help. I am a newb when it comes to cell phones.
Thanks
Matt
someone correct me if i am wrong but the 3g bands for att and t-mo are different so even if you have 3g coverage you would only get edge. For faster speeds youll have to use wifi.
Do you have a Telstra-branded HD2? IIRC, Telstra uses the same 3G bands as AT&T. In that case you should be able to get 3G. Otherwise, the unbranded & T-Mo branded HD2s wouldn't work with AT&T 3G.

Unless you have the Telstra HD2 (there will be a T in an oval on the back bottom cover), you won't get 3G on ATT. The Telstra model is the only one with the ATT 3G band (the 850mhz UMTS band).
You will ALSO need to have 850mhz ATT coverage in the areas where you live and travel to get 3G on that model.
Hope this helps...
Hi!
I was wondering if there is a way to change that? Installing a new ROM, a software or something!! I bought the TMo HD2 and brought it to South America. Here we use the 850 MHz frequency for 3G, and I just found out the HD2 works with 3G networks in the 1700 and 2100 MHz frequencies =( Is there a way I can change that ???

Hi guys,
I'm really new to this, so please excuse me asking basic stuff.
I am an iPhone user and I am familiar with linux and flashing of a huge number of different devices (Nokia, Xbox360, Xbox, Siemens, PSX...). I am living in the US, but my girlfriend lives in Germany. What I did is, I got her a AT&T locked HTC Aria for x-mas. I am aware of the difference between rooting and unlocking, but still I have some basic questions:
1. Do I unlock the device before or after I root? Does it make a difference at all?
2. As the phone is meant to be used in Germany, which (as unbranded as possible) image should I use? Can I use liberated R012/FR006 or doesn't this work in Europe? Could I use the Gratia Image?
2a.) Shall I go for FroYo or rather stick with Eclair?
3. Does the change/upgrade/renew of the image affect the unlock in any way?
4. Can I unlock the phone with an app or similar, when the device is rooted or do I have to pay for the unlock code?
Thank you so much in advance, I really appreciate your work and your help,
Tim
P.S. I used the forum search and did not find an current answer to my questions
Maybe someone can also give me some advice on what to read, just to understand the basic stuff.
Thanks!

I used liberated_aria_R012, then the "update": la_www_update_R002_signed referenced in the first post in his thread. However I can't get Titanium Backup to remove the bloatware social networking stuff like facebook, ppok, etc., as others recommend. I also couldn't remove them using the complicated "SDK" method as the "ADB" can't find the phone. I don't know whether this is anything to do with the version of the ROM (I know there are more recent versions), but I got fed up after 6 hours trying, so now my wife (it's her phone) just has to live with the clutter

I think I know how you feel. Even after a few years of familiarity with custom ROMs for Windows Mobile phones, this business of android "rooting", "ADB-ing", etc. and commands that look like Unix, it all sounds a a bit intimidating, especially since the "flash menu" entries aren't quite as the guides say in respect of the USB connection, bot following this thread about "unrevoked" is the way I went.
Good luck
I don't think the rom you use will really matter, so I'd recomnd (if you don't mind running on the experimental side) the cm6.1 roms.
For unlocking, just call att and tell them you want to use it for international travel. They'll give you the code for free. I did this with my old blackberry 9000, took a few weeks, but it was basically 0 hassle. My experience was with an off contract phone, but I understand it works with on contract phones as well, someone correct me if i'm wrong, but theres no harm in trying.
hi
i would suggest to wait for gratia in europe (i think it should be released in some days)
i use a aria in austria (ordered a week before htc pronounced that gratia will come to europe ) - works fine but only edge not hsdpa is working for data connection (due to differenze frequences in us & europe)
otherwise no problem with that greate phone

I get HSPDA with my wife's AT&T Aria, in all the European countries & Middle Eastern I visited and except rarely when in the UK and she doesn't get an Orange signal (her carrier), and it switches to T-Mobile's GPRS. Not sure if Austria's different, or may be the APN settings are working, but in my experience HSPDA is possible with the Aria phone hardware.

I tried that but they refused as I wasn't the original AT&T owner (got it from eBay). Maybe you'll be luckier.
There's a helpful looking video on youtube by the way: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjgg__m-KHc. Although it doesn't look like an AT&T phone, it seems to cover all the steps.
@kc1: are you sure?
i would be happy it it would work!!!
when you look at the specification at htc.com for aria and gratia you will find
gratia

Like it says in the Aria specs you've quoted above: "HSDPA". When I'm roaming in Europe & UAE, etc. I get an "H" and a fast connection if I turn the data on in most cities/countries. In other places sometimes "3G". I don't know what frequency Austria uses for it's networks (Due to be back in Salzburg after x-mas so will try it next month.), but I do know that in the past when I've only had a "G" or "E", it has been if I had the wrong APN settings. e.g. with O2, if you pick the "MMS" or "Wap" APN instead of the o2web, and similar for T-Mobile
thanks
Hi everyone!
First of all, I want to thank you for all of your advices. I have not been around for the last days, so I couldn't reply earlier. I read your answers and they were really helpful to me!
As I mentioned before, I am a total newbie when it comes to Android OS or HTC handsets. The HTC homepage and many other forums say, that the aria won't operate on the European UMTS standard. Is this due to a hardware limitation or might this be fixed by using a different rom (like the one of the gratia)?
If this won't be working, is it possible to use skype on mobile with Edge?
Thanks again, have a great day!

I would also like to know how you got HSDPA to work in europe. I have a AT&T Aria wich I'm trying to get to work with 3G/HSDPA in Sweden. It's unlocked through the same site you used and has the "liberated_aria_R012" rom with the "la_www_update_R002_signed" update. Any updates on that? I really would like to operate the phone in europe using full 3G speed!
Maybe it's possible to reflash the radio image?

The AT&T branded Aria does not support the 900/2100MHz bands for UTMS. Only 850/1900, so you probably won't be able to get 3G. Flashing a new radio will not work because the frequencies are in the hardware, not controlled by software.
*grml* Stupid USA!!! Can't they just use the standard of the rest of the world?
Thanks anyway, maybe Edge is fast enough for my girlfriend's needs.
Do you guys think it is possible that some major cities have installed some antennas for the US standard to make the mobile internet faster for visitors? This would explain the experience of @Dopsi.
Thanks for your replies!

Hello guys,
actually there are two types of HTC Aria:
HTC Gratia (HTC Liberty):
GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, UMTS900, UMTS2100
HTC Aria A6380 (HTC Liberty):
GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, UMTS900, UMTS2100
HTC Aria A6366 (HTC Liberty):
GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, UMTS850, UMTS1900
So you want to use HTC Gratia or Aria A6380 in Europe and I guess AT&T is selling Aria A6366.
Btw, you can find all 3 of them in the Device Database of this site.
I am not sure where you can verify which version you have. If you figure it out please let me know...

Interesting indeed. HTC didn't even announce the Gratia until October 2010. So does your Aria have the AT&T logo on it?
I have seen many Thread about I9000 trying to convert T959 modem to use the T-mobile network. What i couldn't find is from T959 to I9000 to make it to the international version.
I have the T-Mobile Vibrant T-959 unlocked with ECLAIR. I know that the network band of this phone is 850/900/1800/1900. i found the result according to Samsung website. I know in another post it was said that it is hardware issue but the hardware is 850/900/1800/1900.
I live in the United Arab Emirates and the network band here is 900/1800 similar to the European or Asian Network. but the T-mobile uses 850/1900 so i couldn't get 3G or any kind of internet connection here, unless i find a WiFi connection. I need the 3G connection on the move.
I want to know is there any way to change the the modem band to I9000? so that i can use a custom rom like Darky which is Stable according to many users.
I would never be using the phone on US T-mobile or any Network in the US.
You might think this Question is redundant and has already been answered but i search every where but it comes back empty.
Your feedback would be highly Appreciated!!!!
I don't think you can actually change your phone's bands.
However, an unlocked US T-Mobile Vibrant should be working on 3G. According to Wikipedia, the two 3G networks in UAE (du and Etisalat?) use the 2100MHz band, which should be supported.
Thanks for the reply, i tried everything but nothing worked.
One more question to ask, what will happen if i flash i9000 rom and radio on a T-mobile phone. Or should i just flash it with a T-mobile rom without changing the radio, and if the sim gets locked I will just unlock?
this is the final question to ask.
Don't know if this helps but I use my unlocked vibrant in the uk, so if European bands are the same...it should work.
You can change roms and I would recommend you should but you can't use an i9000 modem.
Do you have a Sim with a data plan?
Can you text or make calls?

I would like everyone to know that it is not good thing to change there modem from T959 to i9000 your phone will brick never do it.
I just flashed a new rom from Trigger 3.2 which upgraded to Froyo 2.2 and i put in the settings for the Access Point and it works perfectly.
So if you have any difficulty accessing 3g or HSDPA connection on android 2.1 just upgrade it and it will work.
How did you conclude you're not on 3G? Do you get EDGE or GPRS internet connection?
So i need the 1800 mhz how can i do?
Flash a i9000 modem and see if it works.
