Memory, USB storage, sd storage - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Let me start off by saying I am new and I tried to do a search but every time I tried to fill in the search space it would disappear. So that's why I'm asking a question that's probably been asked before. So I have a Tmobile galaxy s2 and an 8 gig sd card. I also downloaded the Astros manager app as well and don't really know how to use that. My problem is I have aboutMN on USB and 6.7 g on sd which is an 8gig card. I deleted some apps from my USB storage but the number hasn't changed. What can I do with the Astros app to make more room if it's possible and what is the use of a sd card if my phone is filled up? Also I read with Astros file I think you can move some apps to the sd card??? Lastly it is not rooted. Thanks for any assistance.

Hi
To help you properly you're going to have to proof read what you've written there as it isn't making much sense! In particular the main details "My problem is I have aboutMN on USB and 6.7 g on sd which is an 8gig card."
What I can say is you need to understand there are 3 areas of storage on your phone.
The internal app storage (2GB), the Internal 'USB Storage' (11.50GB and in some areas confusingly called sdcard) and then whichever 'external SD' you have installed, in your case 8GB.
If you check through the Astro Tools if I remember correctly it has one which shows you a graphical respresentation of where you file space is being used. You do not need Astro to move files to SD. You can do that through the normal Android Settings menu under Applications.
It is unlikely that your apps are using much of you 'USB Storage' unless you have many Gameloft games installed as they will default to using that sotrage no the external SD. Other apps such as Spotify and PocketCasts will also do it.
So really depending on which area of your storage is full will depend on what you can do to fix it

Another thing is the confusion between "marketing" GB and real GB
Marketing GB:
1GB = 1000MB
1MB = 1000KB
Real GB
1GB = 1024MB
1MB = 1024KB

Well crapola! Available space is 670mb on USB storage. Also I have that app 2 sd and it says I have several apps that I can't move from my phone to the external sd card. I've tried from that app and it won't let me. And yes I do have some game loft stuff that I really don't use. It was cool to have at the time. Also eventually I may want to root my phone, just don't know which one to use since there are a few out there.

I stopped reading here. While any discussion regarding memory and available space is PROBABLY general enough to apply to any model of Android phone, at least SOMEONE should note to you that there are many, MANY different flavors of Galaxy SII. Also, it is VITAL you figure out what your model of phone is before you start trying to root as you say you intend to do in the post above.
If you are a T-Mobile user, and are in the US, than the chances are damn near zero that you have a GT-I9100 model phone (also known as the "international" Galaxy SII), which is typically marketed and sold in Europe and other markets OTHER than the US. The T-Mobile USA Galaxy SII is the SGH-T989. It has its own separate forum. Search for it on the main forum page.
The big three US carriers (T-Mobile, AT&T, and Sprint) aside from Verizon (who doesn't have a Galaxy SII model) all have completely DIFFERENT models of Galaxy SII, and firmwares and kernels are usually NOT compatible between any of them.
The lone exceptions, are that some kernels will work between the ATT version (SGH-I777) and the GT-I9100.

So again I'm on the wrong board?? Geez

Total storage space

Why is the total storage space only showing 19.61GB and not anywhere nearer the 32GB space? Where is almost 11GB?
Anybody noticed this?

I noticed this. The "internal storage" where apps go is something like 7Gb! Why is that and can we change it? Even then, it doesnt quite add up. There must be some reserved space we cannot access I assume.

say whuuut!! :-O
That's quite a loss of space!
32gb as formatted will be around 28gbs available to the file system. Then you have OS rom taking up 9gb it sounds like.
My droid x 2.2 rom takes up about 3.8gb.
9gb does sound like alot but not unreasonable.

Is it just me or is it just strange to say that you get 32 gig but 9 of it goes to rom?

It is strange. 7Gb goes to the ROM and stores all your data. Personally, I cant see a need for more than 1.5Gb at the moment. Either way, some ability to change it would be nice.
So I asked HTC about this and whether we can link more than one device to HTC SENSE, this is what I got!
Dear Ira,
Congratulations on your new HTC Flyer!
You are correct, a portion of the internal storage is devoted to the device management itself. As you have probably already noticed, the device does also support removable SD Card capability. In regards to the HTCSense account, you are also correct. At this time, only one device can be linked at a time. We currently do not have any information pertaining to any potential updates to the device; however, any announcements will be posted on our www.htc.com website.

Yes, we are fixed, HTC said the following to me also:
'HTC Flyer shows 19.61GB because of many reasons. 32GB is raw memory size and after formatting it is always less than 32gb, it is same like when you formatt your SDcard. Another reason is Android system and all applications are already installed in memory. Your Flyer is not faulty.
To send a reply to this message or let me know I have successfully answered your question log in to our ContactUs site using your email address and your ticket number 11GBCW21ENA001983.

HTC'
32GB wouldn't decrease to 19GB after being formatted.
another CS "inaccuracy" (to remain polite )
I agree with you.
We wish we could get better for the money we pay for these over-priced gadgets.
you have 19.61 for movies and such from watch,( maybe able to use as SD card as well) and then you have 7.24 (+/- a little bit) for applications and ROM so that is pretty close to the 28GB that you get once fromated
My Wifi-only 16 GB model has 8.69 GB total storage space. A little disappointing...
System + data + sdcard (+ some others boot etc) partitions = internal storage...
And yes you did see right... Sdcard partition is infact the internal memory ... The actual SD card is called SDcard2 (from memory)
Kris
I think storage size is as it is.. just partitioned the way not many hope to have..
7+gb for main + 19+gb for secondary memory (aka SDCARD) = 28+gb
Comes up to the same a 32gb SD card would show when formatted.
As to why they have 7+gb, its a personal preference.. if they allow only 1.5gb, some other dud will complain that its too small. They probably ask why didn't htc allow more since they dun need so much secondary storage because of the additional SD option.

[Q] How many GB of software does the phone come pre-installed with?

Hey everyone,
I just picked up the HTC One last week and was wondering whether anyone knew how much storage was taken up with the stock software/apps that it comes pre-installed with. I have the 32gb phone and used the transfer tool to transfer text messages, pictures/videos and contacts from my HTC MyTouch 4g Slide. I transferred about 12 gb of info from my old phone to the One, but now I'm only left with about 13 gb of storage! I checked my storage values and it says I have about 6 gb of "other". Could that be all the pre-installed bloatware that came with the phone? Is there a way to know?
I checked my storage before doing anything to the phone and it looked like about 6.6 gb of space was taken.

25 Gb is a bit low, but I'm using TMO. I hear that ATT puts a lot more bloatware on their ROMs. I believe I had about 27 Gb when I first turned on my phone.
How is 25GB a "bit low"?
6GB for the ROM, plus the 25GB = 31GB.. plus the 1GB variance of actual available storage sounds perfectly normal to me. Remember, you don't actually get the stated GB of storage, even on micro SD cards, etc.
There's always some partitioned for the file storage system (and no I don't mean the OS, I mean the "SD" file system)

It is a bit low because I had more than that when I first powered up my phone.
EDIT: IIRC. I have no particular intention of doing a reset to see what it comes out to.
Really? Lol. Where did you buy your phone from? Because if it's T-Mobile, then you had 26GB max.

And 26 is not larger than 25? Hence, "a bit small".
Yes, but previously you said you believed you had 27. You did not.
The OP's concern was whether or not his was normal. Your response infers his available storage it is not normal, when it is.

Sorry, can't remember if I had 27 or 26, as I think I mentioned. What I said was his 25 was a bit low, but maybe he is on ATT. 25 is a bit lower than 26, or whatever the TMO has. I'm not going to reset mine to find out, it really isn't that important.
I don't recall saying his was abnormally low, just that he might be on a bloatware provider that took up extra space.
I think he had the same 26GB, he's just generalizing the amount of data he transferred
i.e. "I transferred 12 GB" really means something like 12.46 GB leaving him with 13.54GB. Add in the 6-point-something OS and you get ~32GB.
Anyway, OP, the answer is, it's the OS (which includes bloatware) your phone is completely normal.

Memory Card issue

I had been using a Samsung evo 32gb in my g3 with no issues. I upgraded to the Samsung evo 128gb and now when I play my music, the music drops out a lot. I don't understand. I had a replacement sent to me and it does the same thing. I bought them from Amazon and have ran two different apps to test them. They come back as genuine Samsung cards. The cards are reading @ 41 mbs. So I'm not sure what the deal is. I only have a couple of days before I have to send the card back so I'm trying to find out if the cards are good or not. Thanks.

What format is the card in? FAT32? ExFAT? Whichever it is, try the other. Even if it came formatted, you can try formatting it from the phone instead. Sometimes it makes a difference.
Also, there's some apps to increase the cache for your Micro SD card. I think some music apps have a cache setting, too.

I haven't used any in a while so I don't remember specifically the app names.
If you search the Play Store for SD cache I see some but some of the hits are for other things related to cache, so you'll just have to judge by their names.
I think among all the other things it does, I believe ROM Toolbox by JRummy does that, but that app's overkill and might require buying for some features.
Sometimes I wish I could pay it forward with apps I've bought in the past. I've probably stopped using more apps that I've paid for than apps I currently use that require being bought.
You're welcome!

Thanks man. I sure appreciate your help. My old card was fat 32, new one is exfat. I'm backing up my sd card at this moment, so I can change it. Again thank you. Much appreciated.

Interesting to hear if your reformatting makes a difference.
I have a 128gb Lexar 633x Class 10 (black/blue) that my VZW G3 will not recognize(mount) the card in any format or formatted with different softwares. Works fine is cameras and pcs/laptops.
But it will mount the 54gb version of same card.
good luck
Well, going from exfat to fat 32 seems to have helped some. It still has some drop out, but not like before. I'd say it's probably reduced to 1/2 or 1/4 of what I was experiencing.

move to sd - missing option?

Hi.
I tried to convert my SD card into an adoptable storage without a need to force the root but as you are probably aware this doesn't seem to be working properly (g5 can see sd card as a extra device storage but you just can't use that capacity).
So I formatted my sd card back to a portable storage. Than I was trying to move some of my large apps into sd card but there is no option to do it at all.
I checked every single app and there is no "move to SD" button as I have in my previous phones. I believe this is not a marshmallow "feature" as I've seen galaxy s7 screen shoots showing that working.
Any chance I can have this option back?
I hope so as I can't understand why lg released a flagship phone without this option...
That option doesn't exist in any Marshmallow rom afaik @copymaker, I didn't have it on my S4 either.
Ok. So Google erased that option due to the new feature which is adoptable storage. But manufacturers like LG and Samsung blocked it and now we have neither of them available... That's weird

Looks like adaptable storage works though, http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g5/how-to/enable-adoptable-storage-t3368207
I'd never use it because that would mean losing all my data if I switch phones. Once it's set to internal storage it will only work in that phone with that rom, but not in other phones and afaik not on your PC either. No idea who thought THAT up, but in my opinion that's utterly stupid.
I actually contacted LG about it, they insist its a developer issue with apps bot being compatible!
I pointed out my LG G4 has the ability to do so and that is running 6.0.1, it was at that point the conversation went bad to worse. Seems like they dont have a clue?
It can be done on Sprint LG G5, I followed the ADB process in the following link (no root required) and now I can move apps to my MicroSD card:

LG have gone down in my estimation in the way they have handled things.

it could be a plan by google to make sd cards useless on phones as they can't stop manufacturers including them.
I don't think any current google device has an sd card so no cards is the google standard

Im not so sure its google? Seriously think about it both G4 and G5 are 6.0x variants. My mates Htc is 6.01 yet his HTC and my G4 both allow you to move apps on to removable storage?
I seriously think its an error on LGs behalf and they are either too arrogant or lazy or both to sort it.
They told me the Cam360 was the reason they never included 360 panoramic photos and the why we can only photo in portrait mode for panoramic shots.
My biggest complaint was how poorly it stitched inages and the inconsistency in light metering which results in heavy banding in images.
LG said by the Cam360 as the G5 is a modular and some of the features are being stripped and will require additional modular support.
Not interested in my complaint at all.
Just did the S7 method, works like a charm.

SD card as internal storage?

Does anybody know if this feature is part of the phone's software? I can't seem to find the option. Kinda useless to have SD card slot if I'm limited to transferring files over.
For instance all my music is backed up via Google music and I save stuff to the phone as I go which eats up a lot of space..
And the worst part is some apps allow you to move to the SD card but it seems like all the important ones don't even have the option.

Adoptable storage isn't enabled on mm on any OEM roms including Sony that alone tells me how reliable it'll be. It can be enabled though via adb pretty easily check the Normal xa forum someone has already done it but the storage details are all messed up its just a load of random no's. Also Google it there's plenty of ways to get it working if that's what you want.

Thanks. Its hard to think that it is such a big deal to have this feature, but oh well.. There should at least be a standard 32gb rule on any Android phone at this point considering how much usable space you end up with. I'm at almost 80% with just apps downloaded.

Yep that I do agree on 32gb should be the standard now. I'm not that bad yet still got just over 4gb free. The last update on my xa ending in 73 freed up a extra gb internal memory no idea what they've deleted though.
