[fix] faster 3g/ 4g speeds - HTC EVO 3D

For those of you who want to go a bit faster, download/upload stuff 20-30% faster, you can easily do it by messing with the proxy settings on your HTC Evo 4G or 3D.
To do this, you will need a rooted Evo 4G or perma-temp rooted 3D.
First, install MSL Reader app from the Market (yes, it’s free) and find the MSL of your HTC Evo 4G or 3D.
Then call ##3282#.
Choose “Edit Mode”.
Enter the MSL code you got earlier for password.
Then goto Advanced->RTSP/HTTP Setting.
Then set RTSP proxy IP to 0.0.0.0.
and set RTSP proxy port to 0.
and set HTTP proxy IP to 0.0.0.0.
and set HTTP proxy IP to 0.0.0.0.
Choose back button, menu button, and hit “Commit Modifications”.
This should get your Evo 4G or 3D rebooted.
Now compare the speeds before and after, your 3G and 4G download/upload speeds should be much higher due to the fact that we bypassed Sprint proxy, which just slows things down.
For me, I went from 500kbps download/480kbps upload to near 800kbps download/800kbps upload for 3G.
On 4G, I went from 5Mbps download/850kbps upload to near 8Mbps download/1.2Mbps upload.
Im sure this been posted quite some time back but like i said i suck when it comes to using search, the only reason i stumbled on this is because i saw something similar on the og evo forum. But it is a tad bit different for the 3d so i googled it and found evohacks site with a tut.
And yes this does my indoor speed went from 3g-. 06 to .3/. 4, 4g went from roughly. 9 to 1.25
Outdoors 3g went from a. 5 to consistent 1.1 and 4g went from 3mbs to 5mbs.
Note: when you do everything and hit back, menu, commit modifications its going to reboot your phone. Once it boots back up go back and check it again because it will be reset to what it originally was. So go back and make every 0 again and do the back, menu, commit but this time it will read no changes to be made. Just do a manual reboot and everything will stick and you're good to go.
I take no credit in this mod. All credit should go to Avalaunchmods for his thread in the og forum and evohacks.
Just passing this find on to people with poor speeds.

thanks for the info bro, it's been discussed before but i like it being reintroduced for the newer members

Yes this was helpful! I actually did this before but I checked on it and the proxy was there again! I'm sure it sticks between Roms.. but maybe when I updated my radio or something it switched back? What do the rest of you think?

I'm sure it's the ROM cause when i asked about this in the og evo forum i was told that this mod can be implemented in a ROM.

Thanks for the info. I applied this to my Evo 3D and could notice a slight decrease in the amount of time it takes to load a webpage on my phone browser.

Yeah, it's been proven this doesn't help anymore. It actually makes my speeds worse.

it will be worse if you don't also change the following values:
*#*#4636#*#*, Phone Information, scroll down and change Toggle DNS check to "allowed", reboot phone.

tweak has been around for a while but will defiantly be useful for new users appreciate your post man!

When I enter it on my phone everything seems fine until I hit commit. It ALWAYS says no changes and I have to manually reboot. When I reboot and check the proxy's under edit mode the proxy's look changed, but when I go to view, the proxy's are back to the original settings??? This had happened since I rooted with s-off.

What did the first time is change the proxies to 0 commit. Then after the reboot the process would be back to default, i changed then to 0 again but when i hit commit it said no changes and would key me commit so i did a manual reboot went in and check and everything was at 0 after that.

Well, it definitely made my speeds better. Not by much, but noticable better.

I don't know why or if It's just a placebo effect but after I tried these setting my speed was greatly improved. I'm on Mexico and it feels like 30%-40% faster. Thanks man.

Heck ya I'm up to 600-800kbps! I did not test immediately before changing this, but less than a week ago I was less than 300.. I'm happy! Thanks again for posting this!

Can anybody comment on this? This is the first I've heard of it..
Edit: I've changed DNS check back and forth and I don't see a difference, hard to be sure because I have inconsistent speeds most of the time.. To be clear, I did all my testing on the speedtest app over 3G. I'd still love some comments on DNS check!

Did you mean for the 2nd one to say " set HTTP proxy port to 0.0.0.0 " ?

[HOW TO] Guide to changing your PRL - no root required

This is a guide to changing your PRL...no root required.
Where I work has an absolutely horrible Sprint 3g connection...lucky if it breaks 100kbps...so I use a modified PRL while I am at work to roam on Altell/Verizon towers. If you have the same problem as me then read below on how to change your PRL.
This is my first guide so let me know if you see anything I can do to improve it and be gentle =P. I couldn't have made this guide without Leviuqse's Epic 4g PRL guide HERE and yoboii23's guide to getting your MSL and drivers setup HERE. I was able to use information from both of their guides to help get this method working on my Evo 3d. This process seems long but it actually takes less than 1 minute to do once you have everything setup.
Disclaimer: Changing your PRL can build up a lot of roaming data/calls if you use a modified PRL/other carrier PRL if you are not careful. Use another PRL at your own risk. Don't play with the settings in QPST.
Requirements:
1. HTC Diagnostic Drivers installed
2. MSL for your phone
3. QPST installed...I tested this method with QPST 2.7 build 323 and QPST 2.7 build 366.
4. PRL file of your choice
Step 1 - Install your HTC drivers and acquire your MSL. yoboii23 over on XDA wrote a great guide on installing the drivers and getting your MSL HERE. Follow those instructions before moving to the next step.
Step 2 - Google and install QPST...I tested this method with build 323 and build 366. X-drivers has the software listed as freeware but I am not 100% sure it is so I will not post any direct links.
Step 3 - Find what PRL you want to use and put it in a folder on your computer. I am using a modified PRL created by techknowfile on XDA that is located HERE. This PRL works great for me but your mileage may vary...try out a few PRLs and see what works best for you.
Step 4 - Turn off USB debugging on your phone...go to settings > applications > development > uncheck USB debugging
Step 5 - Open the dialer on your phone and enter ##3424#
Step 6 - Connect your phone to the computer and select Charging only if prompted.
Step 7 - Open QPST Configuration wherever you installed it.
Step 8 - Click on "Add new port"

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Step 9 - Uncheck "Select Serial and USB/Diagnostic Ports Only"
Step 10 - Select your phone on the list and hit OK.
Step 11 - Select your phone on the list.
Step 12 - Click on the "Start Clients" tab at the top and select "Service Programming"
Step 13 - Select your phone on the list and hit OK
Step 14 - Click on "Read from Phone' in the bottom left
Step 15 - Enter your MSL when prompted and hit OK
Step 16 - Click on the "Roam" tab then click "Browse" and navigate to your PRL file. After selecting your PRL click "Write to Phone".
Step 17 - Your phone will reboot at this point and you will see a couple popups on your computer that you can just hit OK to close. Let your phone reboot and don't close QPST until it is finished writing to your phone.
Step 18 - The PRL should be written to your phone now. You can verify it by going to settings > about phone > software information > more > PRL Version. If you want to switch back to a stock Sprint PRL then all you need to do is go to settings > system updates and click Update PRL.
Reserved for FAQ if needed.
Be wary of changing your PRL (to a Verizon one) as Sprint WILL cancel your contract for overuse of roaming...just a warning.
Wait, wait--but if they cancel your contract, aren't you stuck with a brand-new no-contract $200 EVO 3D? Or will they require that you send it back?
I remember a scam I had back in the day where I could order the Motorola Razr
(remember when those were cool??) off of Amazon, cancel w/i 14 or 30 days, but was never required to return the phone to anyone so I could sell it at a premium.
I have read in other PRL posts that when Sprint cancels your contract you don't get charged the ETF but I haven't heard how that would work within the 30 day return period.
Can the same thing be accomplished by opening the dialer on your phone and typing in *#*#4636#*#*, clicking on phone information, and selecting a different preferred network? Will changing it with the method I list just not stick after a reboot? Maybe it will if fastboot is enabled? Just throwing this out there.
Changing the preferred network type will still use the stock Sprint PRL. I am using a modified PRL that has some towers removed/added for much better speeds. I don't think just changing the network type would have the same effect.
Thanks for the guide man. I've been stuck out here in the middle of nowhere, Arkansas for almost a month now, with a couple weeks to go, and no Sprint service. I was trying to figure out how to flash the 00001.prl, because it allows me to actually have service, without that damn roaming triangle sitting up above my signal bars.
This really helped a lot man.
FWIW, Step 4 of the guide says "Turn off USB debugging on your phone...go to settings > applications > development > uncheck USB debugging" but I couldnt get my phone to popup in QPST until I checked that box again (I had it checked prior and un-checked it per the guide). After I re-enabled the option I got through the rest of the guide without any problems.
Is there any other settings in there what we can safely change or should I just assume everything else in the program is off limits? It seems that what that program is saying after it reads my phone differsfor some of the stuff vs what my programming menu says on the actual phone...kinda weird.

Thanks, awesome guide! It works great on my Evo 3D, as I was hoping. I did the same thing on my OG Evo when I had it since I frequently travel in an area that has bad Sprint reception. When I'm traveling, I am usually roaming and have no 3G data (1x only). Thanks again!
Just changed to 00001.. i also tried 11114.. Gonna take a walk somewhere i know has no coverage and see what happens.
EDIT: 1 bar sprint to full coverage.... amazing.
Where to get the hybrid PRLs?
I'm new to Sprint and the 3G service in central Florida is nowhere what Sprint says it is supposed to be. The highest I've had is 125kbps. According to Sprint this area should have >600kbps. My sister visited me recently and easily achieved 600kbps with her Verizon phone. Does anyone have a link for the PRL discussed in this thread?
Also, I did modify the sound using QPST and was able to raise the volume. Check the post on XDA by urcboss07 on June 29th of this year on the thread "How To Use QPST to INCREASE the volume on the Evo 3D."
So as an alternative to using QPST, can we load the .prl using the fixed EPST program from Techknowfile's post?
That epst won't work until full root

So if you're constant roaming, you won't get charged for it? And sprint won't charge you for basically getting a $600 phone for $200 + your first bill if they cancel it?

This thread is to help people who has ****ty Sprint service in their area or area they want to travel to and not how to scam Sprint. When you scam Sprint, they lose money and everyone else gets affected. Sprint is the last carrier with true unlimited data and I hope you don't screw it up for the rest of us.
I tried this because of the poor 3G I get in my area. I have a problem at step four tho. I've tried it with USB Debugging on and off put when I try to add port in QPST the phone never shows up....
EDIT: fixed problem. I need a US Cellular PRL if anyone has one.
Incredibly easy once I got the drivers installed correctly. Also incredible results. Went from 1 to no bars of service in the house to full signal. I always use WIFI when home but now phone calls are crystal clear!

anyway that the evo 3d internet hack will work on the LTE??

I did the hack on my phone and its been working fine, now I don't find a huge improvement over having the settingson... But try it out and see what happens.
Edit, I personally reverted back to placing the settings because Youtube and other streaming video started not working without it.... so IMBO would recommend to stick with sprint settings.

my experience:
Speed test before the above: 989 down, 216 up
After: 1100 down, 211 up
No huge difference in a crappy 3g area. However it will make a difference where the 3g is better. Those proxies are overloaded crap, or at least they were last I checked.

That didn't do squat for most folks even on the EVO 3D.
At one point it might have made a difference on the EVO 4G.
Mostly placebo.

Anytime you add a proxy server there is a potential of it becoming a bottleneck. It all depends on the capacity of the server and how much it's being used when you need it.

Ok so I did this and it helped streaming a little bit. Then I tried something else that doubled my internet speed it may not work on non sense Roms, but you can try it.
Open your dial pad, type in *#*#4636#*#* then go towards the bottom of the page. Tap on "set preferred network type" then select CDMA/EvDo/GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto, then your 3g should turn off then back on. Next go towards the very bottom of the screen and there is a button that says toggle dns I believe. (Sorry, I'm on my phone so I can't check) hit that so it says 0.0.0.0 allowed. Then all you have to do is tap your home key and it'll save by itself. I have noticed that this won't stay there if you restart your phone, but once you get used to it it's pretty quick to set. I don't reboot every five minutes so it doesn't bother me. It's a small price to pay for fast internet!. My internet speed used to be about 200-300 download, now I see up to 2200Kb download.
IF THIS HELPS YOU OUT PLEASE HIT THE THANKS BUTTON!! THANKS!

IF THIS HELPS YOU OUT PLEASE HIT THE THANKS BUTTON!! THANKS!

As some have mentioned regardless of whether you have latest updates/radios/rooted/unrooted the proxy settings on the EVO LTE as a whole don't work because it does interfere with streaming. However I have found that it only applies to the HTTP proxy settings. You can still 0 out RTSP setting and maintaining streaming (browser/YouTube, etc).
I do agree with mykeyvee, to help maintain a solid 4G connection, setting the preferred network type to "CDMA/EvDo/GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto" can only help. You can also use Elixir2 to do the same thing without have to got through the dialer.

Finally! A Solution for "Data Call Failure" or Error 67

First of all, proceed at your own risk. Poking around in your phone can cause problems if you're not careful.
I'm posting this because I spent quite a bit of time searching, but could find nothing that worked. I tried resets, updating profile/PRL, etc and none of them helped. I finally bit the bullet and called Sprint. After a short discussion about everything I had tried, a nice lady named Rachel had me update my data profile, which is apparently different than resetting it. You need to get into the SCRTN menu and the required EPST code is ##72786#, which is one that I did lot have in my handy list of useful codes.
After entering the code, you are presented with a password prompt, which is where you input your MSL.

After doing so, you are at the SCRTN main menu.
When you tap "Menu" in the upper right hand corner, one of the two options presented is "Reset".
Tap that bad boy and you get this confirmation message.
When you tap ok, it does it's thing and then reboots. When it finishes rebooting, it should start the handsfree activation process and then all will be right with the world....or at least it was for me.
Just wanted to say THANK YOU! Activating my "old" LTE which was already rooted and got this. Took an hour with a CSR and getting disconnected for me to do a quick search to find this thread. I called back, got my MSL and did this and BAM!
Thanks a ton for sharing this.
Thanks a bunch, I am running stock Rom, but could get error 67 to go away with sprint tether. So I ran this and voila looks like that fixed my error 67 tether issue. Which also fixed my media link error 67 message
**edit**
The error came back after a reboot, I will fiddle with it more later see if I can make it stick

A week ago I was getting the error code 67, as well as no data what-so-ever. No matter what I did (the ##72786# data reset as well as the ##986# hard reset) still no data connection (error code 67).
So I took it to Sprint, they couldn't fix it and ended up giving me a new phone. Basically, nothing helped. The Sprint tech. really couldn't answer what was wrong, so his fall back excuse for the issue was installing an unstable ROM.
Which was not true, I had ViperRom installed on the phone for about 2 1/2 weeks before my phones data took a crap on me

An easy fix is ##DATA# enter msl, click data and edit the Active Profile from 0 to 1, commit and reboot. No one at Sprint or anywhere could help me. I got calls and texts fine, but data was a no go until I changed that value.

It should be noted that all of these ## codes ONLY work on sense roms, not aosp.

Man, I have tried everything i order to get native HotSpot working. Hee are the steps, as I know them:
Modify build.prop, adding the command ro.tether.denied=false
Reboot to recovery
Use TeamWin to wipe both Cache and Dalvik
Reboot normally
USB Tether
Turn on HotSpot
Still getting Error 67 every 15 seconds. Let it wait for 5 few minutes; no joy
I even turned off LTE (since it doesn't exist), nada.
Anyone with additional ideas ?
Thanks !
For anyone who has had issues recieving and sending text, what was the result of you getting it back and running? I called Sprint and they reset my setting within, this menu, and nothing working. Obviously im S-Off and such, so they said my last resort was to do a factory reset. id appreciate it if someone told me what they did...TIA!!

Confirmed Working on HTC EVO 4G LTE on Verizon Prepaid.
This is confirmed and working on my HTC EVO 4G LTE, no root; running on Verizon prepaid. My problem was that it would sometimes disconnect and most of the time just give the 67 error code. I would connect sometimes if I got lucky and then failed. I have HTC Sync Manager installed by the way. Everything seems to be working fine. I don't even know what this reset does as all the info stays the same after I checked it back. Thanks
What solved this problem for me, as well as a brief warning...

I have a Sprint Galaxy S, and when I did the steps listed here, everything was reset for me and all seemed lost. (could not call, text, number seemed reset to something like 000-000-0084) However, After poking around a bit, I went under Settings-->About Phone --> System Updates --> Update profile. After awhile, it updated and restarted, number was set back to what it was, so was username, etc. So, I'm sure your problem was long solved, but let this serve as a warning/emergency action post for others: If you do this, and then cannot text/call, try the method I described before taking it to a store. Also, I made an account simply to say this, I will probably never come back, so keep that in mind. Hope that I helped someone, good luck to any trying to fix error 67, even afterwards, I didn't even check to see if my error 67 was fixed (it always occurred when I tried tethering), but right now I'm just glad I got my phone to work again. [Fix] Streaming Problems in 3rd Party Music Apps

Not sure if this has been discussed here or not but I am just carrying this over from past experience with the OG Evo when i had problems with streaming music on Tunee music using 3g so if anyone cares here's the fix.
***This only works on Sense Based Roms***
1. Open the dialer app and type ##3282#
2. Choose Edit Mode
3. Enter your MSL # (If you don't know it you can download the MSL reader app in the Play Store - you must be rooted to use this app)
4. Choose Advanced
5. Scroll down to RTSP/HTTP Setting select it
6. Then change HTTP proxy IP to 0.0.0.0 and HTTP proxy port to 0
7. Then exit and reboot
Now you should be able to stream music using 3g on music apps and such better.
This may help you or it may do nothing for you but I have to do this in order to stream music in Tunee music and Im sure some other apps out there.
Some people have said this also "Slightly" increased data speeds but take that with a grain of salt
Note - This will revert back once you flash a new rom
***Although almost impossible Im not responsible if you damage your phone in any way by doing this***
I see the option but when I click on it, nothing happens. the setting doesn't open up for me to make the change. Running "STOCK WITH GOODIES 1.75" rom. Anyone else not able to access the setting?
Thanks for the info however this did not work for Pandora. If I'm 3G it will not load a song. It says loading or buffering 1% then skips to the next song. Pandora works flawlessly on my WiFi.

Everything.
Not taking credit for this find since I used it on my Old Photon but I went ahead and added "persist.ril.uart.flowctrl=10" to the end of my build prop to see if it made a difference... might just be me but my speeds went up around 200-300kb/s
I found out that you have to hit the back button and then select Menu - Commit Changes, for anything to take effect. You cant just - 7. Then exit and reboot

Thanks for the 2nd option.
I am Stock so by "clear cache" I assume you mean the App Data for Pandora. I did that and rebooted then tried it out and still nothing. I have email Pandora about it and this was the response that I got:
Thanks for writing, sorry about the trouble. We're aware that recent Android OS updates have resulted in our app not working on certain devices. We're working with Sprint on this issue.
Thanks so much for your patience in the meantime.

Did this and I think my data speeds got worse. New Spotify radio would barely play. It would play 2 or 3 seconds then skip, 2-3 seconds, skip. The old version of Pandora worked flawlessly though.
Sigh.
I remember when an OTA broke streaming music on the original evo. Took forever for Sprint to officially fix it. Every since that happened I always remove sprint's proxy from my phone. It helps the speeds a little but because Sprint runs there 3G on netzero streaming music doesn't work so hot unless it's 4 in the morning. I use to stream Rhapsody on HQ music over wimax although it worked well the signal would cut in and out 100 times on a 15 commute. So what I do now is use slacker and cache for offline playback. The stupid part about that is that even when going into cached content it still has to connect to download album art sometimes that can take forever to load. I'm just hoping LTE rollout doesn't look like swiss cheese like wimax was.

4G Issues on CyanogenMod 10.2

I am new to root and ROMs so perhaps I overlooked a setting.
I just rooted my phone and flashed CM 10.2 a few days ago and I cannot get 4G anymore. I can only get 3G. I have tried a few fixes like dialing *#*#4636#*#* and adjusting the APN settings but nothing worked. I have the LTE button ON and I am wondering if I am still getting 4G because I have LTE on and it's just showing 3G. But I don't think that's the case.
Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated!

My personal experience, living in a fringe signal area, is that AOSP roms just don't have as strong a signal as TW roms (it presumably has to do with how the RIL had to be hacked/reverse-engineered to work for AOSP). I would prefer running AOSP, but unfortunately in my experience on my S3 and Note2, where I am located on the fringe of full 4G coverage areas, I have the same issues as you: on TW, full, fast, 4G; on AOSP, very obviously slow 3G or 1X.
Edit to say I've only tried 4.2.2 ROMs, haven't tried the 4.3 ones yet, so if I'm handing out wrong/outdated info, I'd love to be corrected.
I am now running a stock 4.1.2 ROM and still cannot get 4G. I now for some reason can't even dial *#*#4636#*#*. When I try it just says "Welcome to Verizon Wireless, this call cannot be completed as dialed." Anyway to get that number to work so I can check my networks again?

Try going into settings and factory reset phone now. If that doesnt work, reboot into stock recovery and factory reset from there and reboot. That seems to restore signal for those of us that got stuck in roaming mode from the Carbon thread. Might help your problem too
So I decided to re-flash CyanogenMod 10.1, adjusted the APN settings again, and I have 2 bars of 4G right now. Usually 4G will flash a couple times and change to 3G, but it is staying 4G, so hopefully it stays that way!
Well it stayed 4G for a bit until I turned WiFi on. The moment I turned it on, my 4G went to 3G. I turned WiFi off and I still have 3G. Anyone know what would cause this?
EDIT: My network type shows eHRPD with 3G, where as when I had 4G (before I turned my WiFi on) it showed LTE. If this helps any.

Where do you live, i know the mid Circle drive all the way over across platted to the airport are just dead zones. I lived on Verde drive and rarely had good signal, then when i moved up circle behind the bowling alley i never had a good signal. Just something about the antennae in that area. Do a search on towers in your areas. If I remember correctly the closest tower to you in right by the interstate by the new (now not so new) MCD's in Security. That tower had alot of problems in the area past the Olympics complex all the way back to Peterson because of the radio towers for the Jets. I have been gone for almost 3 yrs so don't take what i say as truth tho. Just how it was when i was there.

4)Scroll to the bottom of screen and add the following lines
Code:
ril.sales_code=LOL

5)Hit the save button at the top right hand corner of the screen(looks like a disk)
6)Once this is done saving restart the phone
7)After restarting go to Settings>More Settings>Mobile Networks>Access Point Names>Menu Button>+ New APN
8)Add desired carriers APN info, when finished hit menu button and save
9)Power down and change to your desired SIM card if you hadn't already done so
10)Power back on and go to Settings>More Settings>Mobile Networks> Access Point Names (if done properly you should see the APN data you entered for your respective carrier).

Bump... also having this issue. Trying CM 10.2 for the first time since August. It had Bluetooth issues back then, so I've been running Bean's ROM until yesterday. Can't get 4G serivce in what is absolutely a saturated 4G area...
Was able to fix the issue by wiping the phone completely (including internal storage!), installing Bean's ROM, doing a factory reset, then coming back.
FWIW I always wipe internal storage when going back and forth between 4.1 and 4.2+ roms, seems to alleviate any SD card issues that can arise from the changes to filesystem in 4.2.
