[Q] Downloading files with 3G

I use my phone for internet access a lot via USB tethering. When I download something like a big file and someone calls me or texts me my 3G is cut off for a second and not resumed till the call is over. This is annoying because I can be downloading a large file be halfway through and then my phone rings breaking the download and I have to start all over.
Is there anyway to get around this or do something like enable 3G but go into a mode where you can not revive calls or texts?
settings-call settings- put a check in DDTM Mode
Thanks, is there a way to do this only while I am USB tethering? I dont want it to send calls to voicemail when I have my phone in my pocket and gmail is syncing or something like that.
it will only send your calls to VM when you have an active download. so it might do it when gmail updates BUT gmail updates so quickly that the chances of that occuring are minimal unless you receive many many calls and constantly update your gmail in between.
im not sure exactly what the flag is to send the call to voicemail but i'm thinking its along the line of kb/secs so a speed of x/kb over x/secs and anything less will just ring. i've been idle on the computer tethered and received a call

Data Network Problem

I have a Samsung Galaxy 3 and I posted this problem in my phone's section but it doesn't seem anyone there knows the answer to this....
I have a Vodafone card with EDGE on it....
Okay, this happens mostly when I am using Custom ROMs.
For example if my Data Network is ON and if someone calls me and if I pick up the call then I am unable to pick it up....
No matter how many times I slide the accept button it won't accept.
And then in the next 2 minutes I am unable to make calls or use Data Network or send SMSes...
And while in those 2 minutes if someone calls me then he gets "The Vodafone number you have dialed is out of coverage area".
Just to mention more, when someone calls me while Data Network is ON and if the call does not get accepted (which happens 90% of the times) I can see my network signal full but actually there isn't any, or something like that....
And after 2 minutes it reconnects to the network....

order of texts

I send a text then 30 seconds later receive a text. The received text displays as if it was received prior to when mine was sent.
I have my phone set to network time. I believe this is happening because the network time between the carriers must be different. The text comes in with a timestamp 30 seconds prior to the local phone time when the phone gets the text.
I guess I will try manually synchronizing the clock and disabling network time.
Has anyone experienced this?

[Q] do text messages use towers or wifi

Does anyone know for sure if the phones use only the towers for sending text messages? Can wifi be used for sending text messages?
A friend is having issues sending text messages from his apartment, but if he goes to the middle of the parking lot, no problem.
He has one of those signal boosters from Sprint, is this the cause of the problem??
Can anyone clear this up?
Thanks
Your phone is constantly sending and receiving information. It is talking to its cell phone tower over a pathway called a control channel. The control channel also provides the pathway for SMS messages. When a friend sends you an SMS message, the message flows through the SMSC, then to the tower, and the tower sends the message to your phone as a little packet of data on the control channel. In the same way, when you send a message, your phone sends it to the tower on the control channel and it goes from the tower to the SMSC and from there to its destination.

[Q] Motorola Droid X MMS messaging problem

I just got this as my first smartphone, so excuse the newbie! I just bought this phone from The Phone Cellar on eBay. I am on Page Plus' Talk n Text 1200 Plan. I cannot seem to send MMS messages on my phone and wonder if this is an issue with my plan or with my phone.
When I try to send a text message, the phone automatically tries to send it as MMS. I get the error "No data connection. Please check your MMS APN configuration in mobile network settings." But on the phone settings page, the only thing that shows up under Mobile Networks is a System Select option -- either "Home Only", or "Automatic." (I've tried both, and I still can't send MMS).
After I try to send a text, it fails, shows the error message, and the phone then reverts to some non-MMS format (the "MMS" indicator goes off - maybe that's SMS?). I can then send a text. So every time I want to send a text, I first just send a one-letter text that fails and then send the text I want to send! Picture messages never work.
I called Page Plus and they reset all the data features on my account and re-provisioned my device into the network, but that didn't work.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
