Hi,
I've installed CM9, alpha 3.5 on my touchpad. Everything seemed to work fine for a couple of hours, then the battery died. Plugged it into my PC (using the original cable that came with the device), and it doesn't seem to charge (it might charge agonizingly slow).
It's been plugged for about 1 hour today (tried charging it yesterday for about 1.5 hours too), and I can't even turn on the device.
I am aware that this was a known problem with the earlier builds, but I can't find anything regarding the 3.5 alpha.
Can anyone help?
Firstly, Alpha 3.5 is CM7, not CM9 - just FYI. CM9 is on Alpha2 and multiple Daily Builds from Eyeballer.
Secondly, I noticed that issue sometimes myself with the TP - it wouldn't charge properly, even with the right cable into the PC. What I ended up doing was charging it with the cable and wall wart that came with the TP, until it would boot, then booted it into WebOS and charged it the rest of the way. Then, once you're into WebOS, it'll charge a lot faster that way.
If that doesn't work, what I've had to do is spend half an hour or so with a different cable, plugging in and unplugging, getting just a trickle of power in at a time, plug and unplug, until it had enough juice in it to boot (and not show me that battery and "Use the proper cable" error). Once it got enough power to boot, I could boot into CM and charge with the non-standard cable, or WebOS and charge fast with the provided one.
One thing you might wanna try is plugging the cable directly into a different USB plug - some plugs don't like my TP cable on my desktop, others do. Also, don't use a hub or extension cable, either.
Then, you might wanna consider reading the RootzWiki page on how to install CM9 from CM7 (using AcmeInstaller2) and upgrading to CM9. It's extremely stable, for the most part, and all that doesn't work is Camera and Mic, which is the same from CM7. It's also much more optimized for the tablet, as opposed to pretending to be a phone.
Hope that idea helps, mate.
Yeah, I mixed up the versions. Meant alpha 2.

That did the trick alright.
Thanks!
Does that mean I'll have to boot into WebOS to charge the touchpad?
Sometimes, it acts like that. Boot into WebOS and charge it completely, from the wall wart, and then unplug it, boot back into CM9, and try plugging it in while using it - if it still stays charged, then you're good.

No. It means you have to plug it into the charger that came with it and not into a PC. The PC doesn't furnish enough amprege to charge the TP. In fact, the TP has a sensor to tell if its plugged into a PC that puts it into "slow charge" mode to keep from damaging the PC's USB Port.
However, there is a known bug in CM9 that, once in a rare while, if you let the battery run down too far, puts the TP in "slow charge" mode, even when it's plugged into the wall charger. That is when you need to boot into webOS and charge it. But then it should start charging again in CM9.
Thanks for that, Lewmur. I knew the bug was there, but wasn't aware of all the specifics.

Went to sleep last night with my Atrix plugged in as I normally have had all my phones, was playing with it right before I went to sleep and everything worked just fine, woke up this morning and the phone will not power on!
First tried to power it on unplugged and the green light flashed for 2 seconds, and nothing happened. Okay, weird, but I'll go with it. Plugged it in, and the green light stays on now until I press the power button! Once pressed, it flashes off, flashes on for 2 seconds and stays off. Nice. I thought the green light meant it was fully charged - when I woke up this morning, it had no green light on, but it was plugged in just fine all night - grabbed my Jawbone ERA and plugged it in to the charger I had the Atrix connected to and it started charging right away, so I know it works....
Pulled the battery, tried plugging it in and power it on without the battery. Nothing. Tried putting in the battery and plugging it in again to "jump start it" as I had done yesterday when I first got it - apparently you can't just charge the thing when connected to a laptop if the phone is off, it will power on even if you power it off again! Nothing.
What the hell happened in it's sleep? I KNOW rooting it didn't cause sleep death.... This thing doesn't have a custom ROM or any undervoltage adjustments, so why the hell is it acting up??? Damnit, right when I got EVERYTHING set up the way I wanted it too.... can't bring it in to the store and give it up with all my personal stuff on there now, I need this thing to power on to wipe it first!!! I'm leaving it connected to the laptop with the green light on for a while and will see what happens in an hour or so....
EDIT - just searched for and tried to hard reset the phone from this thread, the phone still won't even power on to get to the recovery screen!!!
UPDATE - see below and use the SUPPLIED Moto AC charger or at least one with over 5.0V - NOT a PC and NOT a USB hub!
use the charger that came with the phone. My old HTC ones won't charge the phone for some reason. I bet your battery is just dead.
Did you use the provided charger? I tried plugging my Atrix in to the charger I used for my N1, and found that it did not provide enough current. With the old charger, after the phone died, I had similar symptoms where the green light would flash but phone would not come on. Plugged it in with the Moto provided charger, and 5 minutes later all was good...
I had the same problem. Thought I was gonna have to take it back to the store. I don't know what the problem was but I took the battery out for 5 minutes. Then I plugged it into the wall charger(wouldn't work with PC). I didn't turn it on for 30 min, just left it on the charger. Then I hit the volume rocker and it showed the battery charging symbol which it didn't do before. And then I was able to power it on
Same thing here. I purposely drained my battery on the first use. Plugged the usb cable into the PC and nothing. Same blinking green light with no response. I also thought I'd have to return the phone. Then for S & Gs I plugged it into the wall charger and it came to life. Once I got the battery charged a little bit I plugged it into the PC and it started to charge again. Don't know why, but it worked.
Have been running around the house trying to find valid outlets, and that does indeed appear to be the problem. I found it out the hard way though, should have kept an eye on the thread - used a power outlet instead of a PC USB connection and the screen fired right up! Yes, the phone showed the battery with 0% in it, but at least the screen finally came on!
How I have my phone set up normally is connected to my charging valet on my dresser, connected with a 15 foot USB cable that plugs directly into my desktop. Since the extension is good for just one USB connection, I have that connected to a USB hub and then a MicroUSB cable connects my phone from there. The Captivate, and all the other phones I've ever used, not to mention my Zune and Jawbone ERA, all eat that up and have no issues since the USB hub is powered not by the computer (seven USB cables is just too many for a single PC connection) but by the power outlet in the charging valet. I wonder if the hub is distributing the power requirement for each device and the Atrix needs more than others.
I also figured out that the Moto charger has a 5.1V output on it, as does my Jawbone AC charger. Now I need to start making sure that my each one of my chargers in the cars I own has that same type amount of juice too! You go up 29% in battery capacity and so do the requirements to charge it, huh?
Thanks for all the help, marking this SOLVED....
I used the charger in my bedroom that I've used for the Captivate and others before it and it didn't provide enough juice to charge the Atrix. It quickly switched between charging and not charging. I still had 40% battery showing when I woke up though which was nice. It had been off of charge since 10am yesterday.
Plugged it into an HTC charger and it's fine. The one that didn't work is not a modular charger so the power cord is hard wired to the plug.
Alright, a quick update.... Got the phone charged to 100% while it was off and plugged into the AC outlet with the Moto charger. Put my SIM card back in it - couldn't be without a phone all day! - and fired up the Atrix. Went to Battery Info to see what the status is and while plugged into my USB hub, it says
Battery Status: Discharging
Power plug: USB
....
Battery Voltage: 4124 mV (or 4.124V)
Click to collapse
What the hell? Then I went right after that and plugged it into the Moto AC charger, it says:
Battery Status: Full
Power plug: AC
....
Battery Voltage: 4207 mV (or 4.207V)

Why are POWERED USB hubs and PCs not strong enough to charge the phone? I tried ALL my outlets in my vehicles just now and they ALL show full battery status and plugged into AC! Who screwed this up????

Did you download the PC Charging Drivers that Motorola requires you to have in order to charge via PC and USB cable? If not, look here.

Wait, you have to have specific drivers on the PC so that the phone will allow a power cable (let's not even worry about it being a USB cable for a second) to charge the phone properly? I have the Motorola Media Link software installed, and that has a ton of drivers on it, that wasn't enough? MORE drivers are required to charge a cell phone? This is madness!
Sorry about the necromancy, but had this problem myself but it is NOT due to a lack of voltage. Thought I'd actually solve this, the problem is CURRENT.
USB2 ports will only ever supply 500ma which simply isn't enough to charge the atrix when it's dead. USB2 powered hubs won't supply any more than this either to meet the USB2 spec. The fact that the AC adapter works is because they tend to have a higher output current in the region of 1-2 amps (you may notice the phone, or any other device for that matter, charges faster with AC adapters for this reason).
On a similar note, cheap car chargers only output 500ma. I know with my desire I can have it plugged in and it charges, but if I use GPS it actually draws more current than it can charge at resulting in the battery draining (albeit, slowly).
So, make sure you have a higher current AC/Car charger, or alternatively, plug it into a USB3 port to charge as USB3 spec allows 900ma (some mobos output up to 1A) which is enough to charge the Atrix.

Not sure about this..... It's been about a year since I got all my USB3.0 gear, and I was super excited about it because I thought that my phone would charge ridiculously fast because of the added output, but I remember reading that 3.0 uses extra pins and those pins account for the added voltage and bandwidth of the cable - we don't have those extra pins when you step down from 3.0 to 2.0, so we lose the ability to charge devices faster as a result. I don't know if I actually proved that theory, but after I read up enough on it, I thought I just didn't have to with that knowledge..... again, correct me if I'm wrong, I've got a lot of 3.0 gear here!!!

There are indeed extra pins in the USB3 standard but these are to transmit data only. The original USB2 data pins are only there for legacy support and USB3 transmissions use the extra lines. There's still only the 1 VBUS pin which supplies the +5V power. There's also no harm in offering higher current on the connection as a device will only ever draw as much current as it needs until it tops out the supplier, not the other way round
EDIT: Another solution could be to use a splitter cable (common with 2.5" drives)so you can draw from 2 ports, but with a micro connector. I've never actually seen one with USB micro but a quick look on ebay says they do exist

This is the exact same issue that I am facing now. Did you ever manage to find a solution for this problem?
atrix 4g not coming on
Is there any real fix to this issue i have search high and low and all i am seeing people talking about the battery id dead ... i have two battery that is fully charger and the phone still not coming up.
Hi all, sorry that im posting after two years ago but i am facing exactly the same problem, but i plugged it in my USB port, wich i think its a usb2, and i got the screen on but the cellphone did not say charging instead of that was connect your charger, and it was lower than 3% then it turned off. What can it be a solution??
None of the avobe solutions worked?
Which rom/kernel are you using?
I too have this same issue. My Atrix won't come on. I have 2 of the same phone. I tried the charger and cable from both phones. Neither work. When I first plug it it, the green light comes on for a few seconds then it goes out. I even opened the phone and removed the battery. Used a voltage tested and found my battery has 3.7 volts. Thats almost 100% charge. So it not a problem of power. I plugged the phone to my computer and same green light for a few seconds then gone. Won't do anything. No battery display or anything. I even did the simulated battery removal procedure. Didn't work. Is there anything else I can try? Can't get to recovery mode without display unless someone has a fix for that?
Does anyone else have trouble keeping this thing charged? I plug it into my computer and although it confirms that it is charging I continue to loose battery, although not as fast as normal. I need to power it completely off to get it to begin gaining battery.
no... what if you plug it into ac
This thing seems much slower to charge via computer USB than my Incredible did. However, mine is charging and is almost full. Have you tried plugging it into the wall to see if it goes faster there?
The AC in the Wall is always faster.
I haven't plugged it into the wall but being a dev, it's always hooked up to my laptop. I guess I can't use it as heavy when I have it "charging" from my laptop. If I really want to shoot some juice into it I can just turn it off. It works fine then.
Hello everyone,
I have my 32GB TF201 with docking that I purchased 3 weeks ago. After I purchased I was able to charge my table directly thru outlet twice and once thru the dock. This week the tablet ran out of battery. I plugged it to the outlet with an empty battery and yellowish light was on. In the morning (after 6 hours of charging) I checked and the light was still yellowish. I said 'what the hell' and left home for work. When I came back I checked and saw that the battery was only charged to ~9%. I re-checked the outlet and it was not charging. The battery icon appears when I plug the cable but the status is 'Not charging' and it actually is not charging. I could then charge the dock thru the same outlet and usb cable up to 100%. I also could charge the tablet thru the dock's battery. the only problem is between the charger and the tablet itself. I will still take it to the service but I can still listen to ideas to check in the weekend.
Thanks a lot.
You probably have a busted charge port on the tablet itself. Try plugging the tablet to the computer and see if it registers. If not, more than likely the charge port on the tablet is broken.

that was the one thing I did not check and I will today. but the tablet is being charged from the dock that is connected thru the same port.
I am having the same no charging issue, but I do not have a dock. The device recognizes the computer just fine when I plug into that, but into the wall, I get nothing. Even when connected to the computer, all the connection info pops up (usb debugging, asus sync, etc) but it does not charge. Problem started this morning.

Okay, I first had this issue last night. Unplugging and plugging it back in fixed it at the time. Then this morning, I couldn't get it to charge at all (replugging it in multiple times) via AC or USB (though it did recognize the other USB things like it should). I managed to find a dock in stock nearby finally and picked one up today. Plugging the tablet into the dock charges off the dock like it should, and plugging in the dock charges it like it should. Now, miraculously, when I unplug the tablet from the dock and plug it back into the wall via AC, it works again.
So, don't know what exactly the issue is, or how exactly to fix it, but at least it seems to have fixed itself for the moment. And, now I have the dock if this happens again
hey there. i took the tablet to the service but to my luck the unit is flagged as 'defective on arrival' and I had to return it. I guess it was a ahrdware issue. I could not take a new one since the reseller was out of stock of TF-201. I am waiting for it to become available.
Wow - my tablet would not charge at all last night as I ran out of battery. I tried all the outlets in my hotel room and my PC, but it just seemed like the charge port was dead. I noticed that the trim around the charge port was a bit deformed, so the plastic part that abuts the bezel was not straight.
Anyways - I get to the office this morning and plug it in and now its charging - whew! This is eventually going for RMA since the HDMI is completely dead, and now it does seem the charge port is a bit loose. I am concerned it will happen again just when I need it!
Very frustrated with the quality issues - it's just harshin' my buzz with this tablet.
I've switched through three different primes (with issues unrelated to this) but I seem to notice that all of the chargers are like this. It seems like a security feature or bug (not sure) but if you keep the charger plugged into the outlet, it auto shuts off the charging adapter after being plugged in for a prolong period of time. If you take the charger out, leave it unplugged for an hour or two, then plug it back in. It will work again. All three of the primes I got do this. So I just remember to unplug the charger and don't leave it plugged in and the issue doesn't seem to happen anymore.
btw just a heads up:
- USB won't charge on computers unless your usb port is usb 3.0. If your usb is 2.0 it will only charge on idle (which you won't be able to tell really)
- Dock won't charge the tablet unless the tablet runs around 75% battery (sometimes higher sometimes lower) its in the FAQ

This is the exact replication of what's occurring with my TF201 with the exception that it is still not charging directly plugged into the tablet after I remove from the dock.
weird trick
I think this might be due to how some devices recognize power, i have the same issue with my iPod touch. I found that if you take the charger wire with adapter attached and plug that into the tab, then plug that into the wall it should normally work. My brother was having this issue also with his dock not charging, and this method makes it work.
Well, called ASUS support and got an RMA to send it in. Apparently something's wrong.
Hi everyone. I've researched this problem a bit, but still am getting problems.
I have the latest Nighties of CM9 and 2 STOCK HP Touchpad Chargers. When I leave CM9 booted up, while plugged in, it just drains... more of a trickle charge drain... I leave it on 100% all day, and come back to it on 0%, but holding a charge cause it's plugged in.
I have to reboot it, have it on the red battery icon until it boots up into Moboot, and then boot into WebOS to have it charge. I've tried to twist the charger that plugs in to the socket to ensure it's tight and that's good. I've even bought a new touchpad charger in case the original one was messed up. so I've tried 2 chargers.
CM9 just continues to drain. It's at the point where I don't even use CM9 anymore. Anyone have any suggestions about this?

Usually when this happens I just replug the wire in and out from the TouchPad then observer the battery. If it increases good, if not I will just have to replug.
Have you tried charging to 100% then wiping battery stats then letting it fully drain till it dies? I re calibrate my battery every time i flash a new rom.
I haven't tried the unplugging method. I guess I'll give it a whirl. Quite lame though if thats it!

Yup. Did this numerous times.
Fully draining a lithium battery is very bad for it, avoid doing this. Fwiw I've never 'recalibrated' my battery and have had no problems with the accuracy of the meter.
To the op, if WebOS charges fine then there's no problem with your connections so that at least is one thing you can tick off the list.
try doctor it back to default webos only. it shud do fine.
I haven't had this problem with my Touchstone. I'm running CM9 5/22 and it charges to 100%.

This is a known problem with CM9
If you reboot with the charger plugged in it will not charge in Android you have to reboot then plug in the charger when you are at the home screen. This problem does not affect the touchstone charger which will charge the TouchPad no matter what OS you are running

There are safety measures built in to lithium ion batteries so that you don't damage the battery by discharging it. Basically the 0% it displays is not actually 0% but a bit higher.
Will Touchstone work with broken USB jack?
My Touchpad has stopped charging using the regular USB charger. At first, I suspected the cable was flaky since I had to hold it just right and then it would disconnect. I replaced the cable with a generic one and it worked great... solid charging while plugged in.
Today, I noticed that the TP was not charging with the cable plugged in. I have snagged the cable a couple of times and ripped it out of the Touchpad. It is possible that I might have damaged the internal connectors of the USB jack.
Will the Touchpad charge with a Touchstone Charging Dock if the USB jack is broken?

Hi, does the touchstone charges the touchpad while is OFF, or do you have to have the touchpad ON for the touchstone to work?
I'm running jokersax's beta 0.6.9.3, and I have the wierdest problem. When I instantly plug in a usb cable, whether it is through pc or power outlet, the phone doesn't charge, or recognize that there is even a connection. But when i fiddle and shake the usb cable and reconnect it, at random times it's recognized. However when I turn the phone off, the green light appears instantly as i plug in the usb cable, which means that the usb port is not broken. How do I fix this? (Also this has been going on since the early cm9 builds, but I was able to tolerate it till now)
Sounds like you've got a damaged cable/port/charger. It's only allowing some off the current though: when the phone is running it's not drawing enough to charge, when it's off there's enough to charge.

I don't know about that, when I've tried jokers CM9, I had similar issues, when I connect the cable it shows that it is charging but charges only like 5% per hour, hopefully I have several batteries and charge them using a battery charger. I've tried using fastcharge but that feature didn't work for me, simply didn't turn on.
it's not the cable/charger, I tried several different cables and chargers, all with the same result. I have a suspicion it might be a battery problem, so I ordered a new one. I'll see if that's it
Try unplugging and plugging it back in without moving it about. I have to do that on my Xoom (stock) to get the little charging indicator to show sometimes.
