The issue just showed up all of a suddence. The rear facing camera would show scramble images then the camera app would crash. Also getting "cannot connecto to camera" msg at time. The front camera is fine tho so it's not a camera software issue.
Any idea? Sounds like an hardware issue.

I'll link momentarily, but several people are having rear-camera issues, most likely a loose connection somewhere since some people can squeeze the Prime and start getting proper use for a short amount of time. It's absolutely a hardware problem, you either need to RMA or preferably swap it out with your retailer.
*EDIT:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1532032
Add me to the list. I started a thread without seeing this one. I'll ask for mine too be removed. Tried everything I can think of but must be hardware like suggested. Seemed to happen out of the blue.

Okay, now that's weird. I just squeezed around the camera lens and now my camera's working. I had just rebooted and tried the camera again and it wouldn't work. Then I reread your post and squeezed pretty hard around the lens, tried it and it worked. I guess I need to hit the thanks meter for you
Mine did the same all of a sudden after 2 months of working fine,
I sent it in for RMA last Monday, Got an email last night that it has been repaired and shipped. we'll see when it arrives

Just tried it this morning and I am back to the green screen. I guess the squeeze around the lens lost it's compression.
I just played around with it some more and it came back on. Just to the left of the light sensor and down a little is where I can feel it almost clicking into place. I have to press pretty hard but I can feel it wanting to connect or touch or something there.
Edit: I just isolated it. Turned the camera on after lunch and it was back to the green screen. I squeezed right where the front camera lens is and it started working. Let go for a little bit and back to it flickering and green. Guess I now know it's hardware for sure.

I guess I'll stop blowing smoke and actually disassemble at lunch, see what I notice in the vacinity that could be causing it. Really hope this doesn't happen too often lol I'd be devastated if this happens to me.

I don't think it will.
My Prime is in half right here in front of me, and where you're squeezing doesn't contain any parts. I think it's just flexing the glass enough that it presses down onto rear camera and its pad/ribbon cable. That cable must get loose on the side nearest the backplate, or right underneath the little pad on the glass side.
Most likely the issue will persist for the device's life until you or a service center fixes it.

I don't think so either. I just had to squeeze it again to get it working. I think it's exactly what your saying it is.

Yea, the fix doesnt stay long. I contacted Asus CS. My GPS is completely DOA and was planning to get it service anyway. I was hoping they had a fix for the GPS before I sent it back.

Lol, no, we'll never see proper GPS unless you physically mod it yourself. They dropped it quicker 'n a hot potato lol and the metal body will always interfere even with RF windows, GPS is just inherently weak.

Long story short, new company doesn't allow cameras in their facilities and I'm having serious Thunderbolt withdrawals.
I was wondering if anybody had ever removed the cameras from their Thunderbolt and the phone still worked after the "surgery."
If you did, is there a specific procedure you would follow? I found this online: http://www.techrepublic.com/photos/...=47&tag=siu-container;photopaging#photopaging

Go take a look at the FCC approval photos Adrynalyn posted... Not only will you be taking the phone apart, you'll be taking it apart to the BONE. I'm also pretty confident you'd destroy the phone in the process.
Curious... why would you even tell someone you've got the thing or show that it's got cameras on it, knowing the policy?
Jmc: I guarantee you're absolutely incorrect. There are many people who work in high security companies. There has to be at least one person who has done this.

Why do you think I would destroy the phone?
As for your other question, sometimes security will sweep the entire building/staff, just in case. In those instances, if you're caught with a cameraphone, you're getting fired.

I think you'd destroy the phone because that camera isn't just a simple surface mount device like the power or volume micro-switches. It's an entire 8MP camera in a VERY tiny box. To kinda give you an idea how those things are mass produced, a solder paste is applied sort of like one might silk screen a shirt. Then the individual components are placed in their correct locations. Finally, the entire thing is baked in an oven to melt the soldier paste and adhere the components. If you want to see what I'm talking about, go to Qualcomm's website and look at the physical interface for the Snapdragon chip. Assuming the cameras is mounted in a remotely similar way, you're going to destroy the device removing them. Additionally, the FFC also functions as both a brightness and proximity sensor. Removing it would have consequences that would be difficult to predict.

Would filling over it with some sort of hard/opaque/sticky/permanent adhesive substance suffice? Something like putting epoxy or something over the lens so it renders it no longer useful.

That might work for the rear camera, but the FFC needs to function correctly to control screen brightness and proximity.

I dont know about that. Very few android phones have a front facing camera and they function just fine. Besides you can manually adjust brightness. The proximity sensor also has nothing to do with the camera. It's located under the speaker for receiving calls near the LED.

I was wrong. You're right about the prox sensor. Still, the devices that lack the FFC use a light sensor instead. I'd go nuts trying to adjust the screen all the time. If it were completely removed, there's still no promise the screen would even light up.

Well, it's stuff like this that's the reason RIM still builds their top tier BlackBerrys with and without cameras.
Maybe this is too simple but how about just leave your phone in your car?

Just a suggestion to the OP, there's been others that have asked the same question before. Might try looking through those http://www.google.com/search?client...ndroid+phone&sourceid=opera&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8 for different solutions.
Yeah, I've been doing that (leaving phone in car), but I'm getting bored of the playlists on my ipod and would like to spice it up with Pandora.
Also, I would like to be able to receive emergency calls/texts from my family.
I have searched Google, which is how I got that first link with the teardown. If you guys think it's unwise to take out the cameras after looking at that, please say so. If you're making assumptions about the necessity of the cameras, take a look at the link.

Remove the camera apps, you can't take a picture with it if the application to take it has been removed. (i'm sure the company won't believe it, but it is a solution)

If only it were that simple. I didn't believe it at first, but people get fired for having camera capable phones even if they don't have a battery in or near the phone. They're really strict on security.
Go to Wal-Mart & get a cheap Go Phone and some mins . If it has a camera , destroy that one .

Exchange it. Someone posted a similar picture to yours in a thread I made, but I didn't have that issue.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1431274
It is software problem. If it was a hardware one you the screen would like different. Am sure of it. Try hard reset or even wipe all date and make fresh start - you can do this in preferences.
I've just noticed three specs of dust behind the glass in a line, right in the middle of the screen. They weren't there before today.
I can only imagine the dock port, speaker grille and screen panel aren't properly sealed, allowing dust into the chassis. Infuriating. Once you see them, you can't un-see them.

Well why am not surprised at all? I had the same problem with TF101. The only thing you can do is to send Prime for a fixing. And it will take even few weeks...
And one more thing. The dust you see does not came from outside. This dust was already inside but it has moved. Yeach... the same story like I had 6 months ago...
It is a factory defect.

I noticed the same problem on mine just yesterday. Did you manage to find the culprit yet?
The weird thing is, that when I am looking at some night shot I captured right after I bought it (two months ago), I can not see any "smudges" on them.
Maybe it could be possible that when the phones overheats (sometimes it is a bit hot), the sensor get damaged over time?

I thought about trying a custom rom but I think I'm just going to exchange it since it is sill under warranty.
Yeah I checked old pics and there are no smudges on them either.
I guess that's possible, either that or moisture inside. What I have noticed I takes a few seconds for smudges to appear after you start the camera.

I doubt that a custom rom would help, I am running Google dev edition on mine right now, it is the same.
I think the delay is because it takes some time for the camera to opt for the highest ISO.
I am thinking about trying to exchange it under a warranty too, but at think it could be a challenge trying to persuade the service center that the problem is severe enough to warrant an replacement
Hello XDA Community!
I seem to be having a serious issue with my phone and cannot seem to find a solution online, so I am hoping that someone here will be knowledgable enough to assist me!
When I slide my keyboard out on my sk17i, my screen refuses to change orientation or respond to my touches. Having tested this further, it seems that it is the screen itself that will not change, but keys pressed and touches are registered. I have figured out that I can slide the keyboard out about 40% (just over the bottom row of letters) and the screen seems to change orientation to landscape AND responds visually to my touches. Any more than that and it just stops.
I looked online and someone suggested passing a magnet (fridge) over the keyboard. I did that and it worked once for about a minute. After that it returned to this state and there doesn't seem to be anything I can do about it. I have just put in an order for new facias and a new hardware keyboard to repair it as I have had it since the day it was released and some components are getting on a bit.
Does anyone know what the issue is? I only can think of one thing and that is a flex cable issue, but I cannot be sure at all...
I'd appreciate any help that can be given!
At first glance, yes, seems like a flex cable/ribbon issue. You screen will remain frozen when the keyb is completely open because the framebuffer stops receiving signal from the motherboard. It wont take long until your screen shows artifacts or goes completely blank even when the keyb is closed. Your touch digitizer might also be affected by a bad flex cable.
I suggest you replace it as soon as possible, but don't try to do it yourself unless you have experience repairing phones. I tried to do mine and ruined the LCD display, making my repair cost three times as much
PD: magnet over the keyb? never heard of that.

Many thanks for that! The flex cable is out of stock right now, so that is quite worrying, I hope it lasts the next month or so! I think I should be okay with repairing it, since I've worked with very small and delicate electronics before in Engineering. Just will have to be super extra careful! Any advice about what to watch out for?
And yup, magnet seemed to work once, I saw it on a very old thread, but that was the only advice given there.
Well, good luck! Be extremely careful with the display though, the original display assembly has unprotected corners and borders on the LCD so it's very easy to break it, especially on the lower side near the softkeys. Replacement parts often come with plastic and/or metallic protectors on them, which help keeping the LCD safe. Guess SE never meant for people to crack the phone open hehe.
again, good luck with that.

Replacing a flex ribbon/cable on the mini pro is no easy task, requires patience and steady hands when sticking the big square part onto the metallic slider while making sure all of the other components (home button, camera, led and sensors) keep aligned in place. Do it wrong and you're in for an even more tedious mission haha.
PD: here's a crappy pic from when I did mine

Noticed a new glitch with my phone though... the softkey and keyboard lights start to light up when I switch the screen on, but as soon as the screen switches on the lights switch off?
Never heard of such problems. What rom are you on?
I am running a stock gingerbread 2.3.3 rom, just rooted it a year ago. No other changes, apart from shoving CWM onto it for backup/restore
Hey guys, I just saw this post after hours of frustration!, I recently changed my damaged slider mechanism on my sk17i and I had to transfer the ribbon cable from the one mechanism to the other but I glued it with 2mm adhensive that is used for screen, and the problem is when I open the phone it is always on landscape mode, like the phone thinks the keyboard is always out! Before I tried this repair
everything worked perfect
How the phone understands if the keyboard is out or not?
Please tell me what I could have done wrong, I would appreciate your help here!
Sorry for my bad english
Thank you in advance!!!
I've been trying to figure that out myself too, it seems to be some kind of optical sensor. Whatever it is, it just works for me hehe.

Like Pixelado said, it is probably an optical sensor. My advice would be to disassemble the phone again (without unsticking the flex cable though) and make sure everything is back in its correct place. It make just be something is a little out of place, which is very easy to do! Good luck!

Thank you for your replies guys!
I have a problem with the rear camera ,all the subjects are out of focus .
Tap your screen so it can re focus lol I'm teasing. Try a third party app. If that fails inspect the camera, is it scuffed up? Any moisture inside? Is the front camera ok? You can find and replace your devices drivers for the camera if rooted and you know how.
This seems to be a common problem for Mate 9 and 9 Pro and i've RESOLVED it in MY case.
FIrst, does the monochrome mode (camera) work OK? If so, then you *could* be in the same situation I was in.
So, first and most important, I have a gel cover on my case to absorb impacts or, at least stop the phone getting marked when dropped. I dropped my phone and it landed on one of the TOP corners. From this moment on, the COLOUR camera was out of focus. I asked around in the Mate 9 forum and it seems others have had this problem and one person there said he fixed it by tapping his phone. With this in mind i actually i banged mine on the other end ..... and focus was INSTANTLY much better, although not perfect. I then banged it again and focus is back to perfect!
In my case, it looks like my initial drop dislodged a lense/cover over the colour camera sensor and a "reverse" knock has vibrated it back in to place.
Again, check if this is just the colour sensor with the monochrome remaining perfect and, if you do try this, make sure you have something soft like a towel on the surface you're hitting to ensure your phone doesn't get marked.
Good luck!

I actually had the same issue. Camera would not focus. Probably due to a drop in the right corner. Hitting the phone on the left corner a few times fixed my problem.
