I have the pretty same problem.
when I plug the usb in my company laptop with win7, the usb notification doesn't appear. but if I uncheck "usb debug mode", the usb notification appears.
when I plug the usb in my personal laptop with win7 also, the notification appears normally, either on "usb debug mode" or not.
I had this problem when i switched on the phone with the usb cable already plugged in. After i removed the usb cable and restarted, the mass storage was working fine

Sorry but, believe me, I've been dealing with this all week and I have read every post possibly pertaining to this subject, but I can't find a fix.
Went to flash the latest Bionix and PC (Windows XP-32/64-Bit HP) won't recognize my Vibrant. It's the only machine I've ever used with this phone. I plug in and get the USB icon and the Android Debug icon in the menu bar. Pull it down and it says "USB Debugging Connected" & "USB Connected". I can "Connect USB Storage" if I like, and it says "connected", but it's never recognized by the PC no matter what.
I can go into "Media Player" mode and "KIES" and same thing, it's just the USB icon instead of the Green Android. I've changed cords. I've used all the ports, front & back. Flashed back to Nero-5. I've gone into download mode and ODIN doesn't pick it up either.
32-Bit drivers are updated, but I've been doing a lot of install/reinstalls. The last thing I did on this device was flash Bionix-V. A couple weeks later I updated my wife's stock Vibrant via KIES.
What the hell can I do now? Thanks
edit...nevermind, sorry...at least i bumped you!!
Ha! Thanks TS10. And Mounting was certainly part of the problem. I could connect the USB storage and, in fact, it would say “connect” on the phone (“You can now transfer files between your SD card and PC” or something close to that), but it would still not show up on the PC. That’s what was driving me CRAZY.
But get this… Late last night, out of total frustration, I plugged the cable into a USB hub, that was connected to a removable HDD, and suddenly the Vibrant was recognized. I couldn’t believe it. I had plugged directly into that same USB port, on the back of the machine, at least 6x. Why the hell would it connect through a USB hub?!
I have no friggin’ explanation. But I’m running the latest Bionix now! At least I though that until I just check in here.

Are you getting "usb device not recognized" from your computer?
You've installed the samsung drivers?
Was it working at a given point in time and now it doesn't work all of a sudden?
I had a similar issue this week where i got "usb device not recognized" from my computer everytime i plugged in the device. I thought i had not installed the samsung mobile drivers properly, or my usb drivers on my PC was messed up, etc etc.
It turned out that my USB charging cable was the issue. It charged my phone fine but did not let me connect it to Odin or even transfer files.
So my suggestion is to try to find someone else's cable and give it a shot.
I used an AT&T captivate cable from a coworker and that's how i found out it was my cable.

USB fix
So I had the same problem. A new oem cable solved it. don't fight too long with this problem just get a new cable.
Hey guys, please help.
Last night, I used a USB cable given to me from a friend (not the original comes with the box) to hook my phone to my computer. I think this cable is probably defected or something. When I hooked it up, my phone started to get hot and it shut down. I unhooked my phone and tried to turn it back on, but nothing happened. I then used the original USB cable to hook it up, nothing happened. I thought my phone is dead.
Finally, I used the JIG I bought from Connexion/MobileVideoTech.com to get my phone into Download Mode. It worked, and I was able to turn the phone on. Now the phone is functioning quite normal with one thing missing: the USB storage connection.
Now even using the original USB cable, charging function is normal, but the USB storage connection icon does not appear in the notification bar anymore. I re-flashed Simply Honey 3.9.1 large, but still, it is no longer there.
I check setting/ SD card and phone storage, there is no USB mass storage mode. I can not connect and open internal or external SD card. The computer does not recognize my phone any more, can't use ODIN, can't use Droid Explorer. (
Does anyone know how to fix this problem??? Please, helppppp!
Pretty sure its under "Settings > Wireless and netwerk > USB settings"
You might wanna toggle "USB debugging" as well for good measure. Good luck!

What kind of connection "type" does the sgs ii uses for connecting to a pc? sometimes my pc wont even recognize it, i have even tried hooking it up on some of my friends pcs but most of the times on the device it says "mtp" but i cant access through my pc i can even eject it using windows
If you just plug it in and it says MTP, you need the phone's drivers in order to use it.
but theres a much faster way, Just go to settings > apps > development and activate usb debugging.
this way, whenever you plug the phone, it shows up on the phone "USb plugged in"
then you press it, and you hit "load",
then you'll see your phone as a flash drive...and trasfer rate is at maximum
thats the best way, plus you dont need any drivers for doing it

mtp is kinda sucky as far as i can tell, trasnfers are slower :/ , i did what you said: but i get "conect to usb storage" instead of load , works great tough
Settings > Wireless and Networks > USB utilities > "Connect storage to PC" button > plug in USB cable
This used to work perfectly up until today, now it just doesn't work anymore and the "Connect USB cable to use mass storage" popup keeps showing even after I plug it in. I've tried on multiple computers and I tried restarting my phone, but nothing works.

Thats one wierd proccess for getting USB storage man. most would just plug it in and pull the notification bar down to click the mass storage mode icon thing.
but if your not getting a connection, USB port could be toast.
Simple search would've showed that.

Oh wow you're right, I just plugged in the charger and it doesn't charge. So phone is useless, throw it away?
It's strange that it worked fine up until today and then suddenly decided to break, even though the phone has just been sitting on my desk in my room. And it's only a few months old.

If you really have a fried USB port, send the phone back for a warranty replacement. If you don't have stock firmware on it, there are guides to return to stock - haven't specifically checked, but I believe it's possible to do this entirely without plugging in if you are already rooted.

I bought the phone on ebay though, would it still have warranty?
Is there a part I can buy to replace it myself? It's definitely a problem with just the USB port, because if I fiddle with the charger it starts charging if I hold it at a funny angle.
Some people have had success cleaning the usb port with alcohol. That might help but not if a wire or solder joint is broken. If you do try alcohol, don't use regular rubbing alcohol (70%), too much water (30%), get the better (90%) or even better (99%).
If you don't feel like fixing it yourself, you can settle for finding a battery charging dock and get an extra battery. Also, if you need to place files on your phone, use dropbox, Kies wirelessly, or take out your SD card and use an adapter.
I bought a new USB connector and it's working now.

In Android 4.0x systems (Ice Cream Sandwich) and above, Google introduced a new file transfer protocol called Media Transfer Protocol (MTP), which may be set by default. The problem with MTP is that, while Windows explorer can see it, there is no drive letter assigned, so programs like Pimlical can not see the phone's sdcard. The Android operating system still has the capability of USB Mass Storage protocol, which does assign drive letters, as has been the norm in all previous operating systems. It may be possible to set the phone to USB Mass Storage through phone settings. If it is not possible to set the phone to USB Mass Storage through phone settings, then it is possible to force USB Mass Storage.
This behavior is governed by the system property /data/property/persist.sys.usb.config. This is a text file containing a single string. The settings are "mass_storage,adb" or "mtp, adb". Since this is a system file, it is necessary for the phone to be rooted, and then this file can be edited using a root file explorer. Change the text in the file to mass_storage,adb (without spaces), save the file, and reboot the phone.
