[Q] My Nook is Bill Murray in Groundhog Day. - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

I think I found a problem not in this forum yet!
A few weeks ago, I rooted, installed CWM and CM7, and started enjoying my nook. After about a week of that, it started to crash and shut off randomly (at least randomly as far as I can tell). I went into CWM and tried to install the rom again and start from scratch: factory reset, install rom from sd. The install went quickly and wasn't at all verbose, it just said "Installing" and then "Install Complete" a few seconds later. When I rebooted, nothing had changed. And every subsequent attempt at changing the rom yielded no changes. If I uninstalled or installed any apps or changed any settings, when I rebooted it went right back to the way it was.
What I'd like to try is Adam Outler's Ubuntu Recovery, but I can't manage to boot from the sd card. I've spent the past couple weeks searching the forums in my spare time for a solution, but can't find one that works. I can adb into the nook though, so I've been trying to figure out how to use that.
So, first question: any ideas on what I might have done that would stop it from booting from the sd?
Next: if that doesn't work, can I fix this with adb somehow? (I tried CelticWebSolutions' parted fix, but no booting from sd card makes it tough)
Any chance someone else has a similar tough-to-describe problem?

+1 for the thread title.
Many people aren't able to boot from SD card UNLESS their NT is plugged in to the charger. Give that a shot.
As for the shutting off problem, I'm not sure. I get random reboots every once in a while. I just feel like it's expected in an alpha ROM.
Just be sure that when you flash a new ROM, you always:
-clear Dalvik cache
-install zip from SD
-factory reset
-reboot system

After I realized that the nook kept booting to the same state no matter how I tried to kill it I couldn't avoid the reference.
The problem with my random reboots is that I have maybe 2 minutes from when it boots to when it inevitably shuts off.
And yeah, I booted it by shutting it off and plugging it in, as well as just plain turning it on and also turning it on while holding the n.
Thanks for the reply.
Oh, and yeah, I cleared the Davlik as well the second reinstall attempt, I didn't give it enough thought the first time.

Today i had a weird issue as well with CM7, i was on MIUI and flashed back to CM7 to continue with a project and i ended up flashing 3 times but could not pass the Team B+ screenshoot to the bootanimation, it got stuck into dark screen. So by accident i formatted my sdcard and that solved the problem. So next time try formatting your sdcard first for those kind of "weird" issues.

What is it you did to format your sd card? If it works, maybe that's the Rita to my nook Phil.

Yes i formatted while in clockworkmod but after that i formatted again with SDFormatter as i always format my sdcards with that program on Windows.

So you formatted the external sd card, not the internal partition that the nook calls an sd card?

yes external sdcard and the nook does not call it sd card only, there is internal sdcard and external sdcard:
Internal sdcard >> /mnt/media
External sdcard >> /mnt/sdcard

Gotcha, thanks. I don't think formatting the sdcard would be too helpful to me, my problems are definitely internal

New NT won't boot off of SD?

Hey Guys,
I just got my 16gb NT during ebay's $199 sale. I'm having a serious problem getting the thing to boot off of an SD card. It came stock with 1.4.1, but I think something's different because I've tried:
Restoring back to 1.4.0 with the acclaim_update.zip:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1402190
And the NT root SD card
Nook Tablet Root SD Cards
No mater what I do, I can't get it to boot off of the SD card via the zip or into CWM, all I get are factory reset screens instead of CWM. I've tried 3 different SD cards.
I'm going to give this a shot next:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1470910
I don't know if it's going to work, so any help would be greatly appreciated. What's stopping my NT from booting off of the SD?!
why go back to 1.4.0 you don't need to. use indirect method using his image writer tool supplied if your on windows it sounds like you are not formatting the sd card

I've tried formatting the cards both using windows and the NT internal tool. I've also tried writing the image file both directly to the SD and to the SD mounted in the nook.
I'll try indirect's method first.
I wanted to go to 1.4.0 to snowball.
It is my understanding that BN made a change in the new 8 gig NT that somehow prevents booting from the sdcard. Check other threads. No one so far has been able to boot from sdcard. Making some changes in Indirect's setup may solve it so I read on one of the threads. good luck.

Not an 8gig - full 16 gig.

Doesn't work. Formatted through the nook, connected through the nook, wrote the image through the nook, etc. Went to go boot up (power+n, screen on/off, eject/reinsert card, power on) - all I got was a factory reset option instead of CWM.
Something is amiss.

That change is the bootloader locking up because it's the wrong bootloader.

Again, this is a 16gb nook tablet, not an 8gb. It looks like, very very briefly, I may be getting something other than the factory reset screen - I see what looks like the start of the nook bootup animation, then a green arrow that flashes quickly, before I get the factory reset screen.
I bought the NT from the Ebay sale last week as well. Have you heard of anyone else having issues booting off the SD card?
I was planning to book the NT tomorrow. Sounds like I might be returning mine if that doesn't work...

Try turning it off completely, inserting the SD card, and plugging it into your computer.

so to clarify things. you put the acclaim update zip on the sd card. and did you let it reset your nook to 1.4.0 or not? Also you don't have the acclaim update zip on your memory card when you are trying to boot off the sd card do you?
It did not try to reset it. It didn't do anything other than boot normally.
I know it sees SD cards because i can look at files, but it did not boot from it.
ok. wipe your sd card. put on ONLY the acclaim update zip. nothing else. stick that in your nook then turn it off. (in that order) then when it powers back on, let it update your nook
once it's updated, turn your wifi off and check what version you are on. then delete the acclaim update zip from your sd card and report back. KEEP IN MIND. it's NOT "booting off the sd" for this. it's just resetting the software to 1.4.0. if you think it's supposed to boot off a sd for this, think again. expect to see something along the lines of a factory update. that's what it's supposed to do whenever the acclaim update zip is on your sd card.

Yeah, you're not affected by it. Your problem is operator error. They can't change hard-coded IROM with a firmware update.
I don't know what I did but I finally got acclaim to wipe me back to 1.4.0.
I had 3 different SD's formatted in various ways through the pc, through the tablet, etc. Each time it was ONLY acclaim on there. 158th time's the charm, I guess.
Now to tackle the apk parse errors while trying to sideload stuff.
Parse errors are caused by selecting the first button option just once when installing an app and then the second option button which is the only one you should ever select will give you parse error as well. If you do a search on parse errors you will see it.
All the Best
I was having issues with my SD card not booting last night during my CM7 install. After checking my work in Gparted I knew it was OK. Finally I unzipped the files into the upper root and it booted. I know I had it boot with the zip before but this time I could not get it to work?

What exactly do you mean by "upper root?" I'm trying to get CWM and CM7 installed now that I know this thing will boot something off of the SD but I'm back to square 1

If you are on 1.4.0, go to http://nook1.adamoutler.com then nook2 and 3
Choose package installer. Then use some adb root

reboot in 1:45

hello, another newbie here. i have been running cm7 on a 32gb sandisk sd on my 16 nook tablet. . when i start it up it reboot every 1 min and 45 seconds latter.
i got it to quit once and i just never restarted, that worked fine till i lost my soft keys and had to restart. now i cant get it to stop rebooting.
any help other than completely starting over. also is there any connection between this problem and the amount of apps i have on the sd card?
i have alot, over 200 and i dont want to have to reinstall them all again, or should i take some, or alot of them off ?
thanks alot for reading and any help would be appreciated.
If you can, you can back up your apps and data to an SD card using a free app called Titanium backup. As for your rebooting problem, I'm not sure. I honestly don't think it's because of the quantity of apps you have installed. Maybe your SD card is being unmounted for some reaosn.
I had experiences with a PNY Class 10 card that would reboot into stock ROM then gett stuck at the CM7 splash screen after trying to turn back on from completely off state. It could be the SD card, I'm not sure.
can Titanium backup be run on a computer not the tablet, cause at 1min 45 seconds between restarts i dont have enough time.

No Titanium Backup is an app run within Android. So is your NT rebooting after exactly 1 minute 45 seconds every time?

ok, thanks ill keep looking
ok, i got it to stop rebooting, but... What i did was as soon as it started up i went to setting/storage/unmount sd( the one it uses for sd storage).
i unmounted this and it quit rebooting, but then i was unable to access any of my apps, cause that was were they were stored. so i figured that it was stable and i remounted the sd card and.... it went into the reboot loop again. so after several tries i got the sd card unmounted again, but now what ??? any suggestions ??????????????????????????
Do you have an external card reader hooked up to your pc ?
Backup the TiB folder, remake the card. CM7 is now in beta ( have fixes ).
.
Ah, Succulent's cm7 ( also beta ) works to an external card. ( I have not tested this personally, but others report success ! )

If your user data partition is causing the bootloops, I'm not sure. You might be forced to make the ROM again.

[Q] SD Card Won't Mount

Hey so I've been trying to find a solution to this problem for a while now and I can't seem to find anything to fix it.
So I went to format my SD card through my phone (I am running Liquid's ICS rom atm). I went into settings > storage > erase sd card, and followed through on everything. After I accepted that my stuff would be lost I got a notification saying the SD Card is safe to remove, and in storage it gives me the option to Mount the SD Card.
However, when I press mount it acts like it is mounting for like half a second then quickly just says it is safe to remove and the mount button is clickable again. No matter how many times I click it, it will just do the same thing.
I tried booting into recovery and mounting it through there and formatting it and other nonsense and it just says error mounting sd card.
I have also taken out my battery and sd card and left it for like 10 minutes and tried again. Still nothing.
The only thing I haven't tried doing yet is putting it into a computer to manually format it that way, but I don't have a device to be able to do that at the moment so I am looking for a way to solve this without having to drive 23 miles to the nearest electronics store to fix this.
I don't think my SD card is corrupt, I mean it was working perfectly (it is a 32gb card from Verizon when I got the TB) and it just started doing this after I tried to format it through the ROM.
Any ideas?
EDIT:
HEY! So holy **** I had a little bit of a moment there. Anyway, I solved the problem on my own. So what I did was boot into recovery, and partition the SD Card under the Advance option. I just did the first setting for each so my operation was like this: Recovery > Advance > Partition SD Card > (Power button for whatever the first option was until it started partitioning).
After that I tried mounting the SD card and it didn't give me an error. So I went into the recovery settings to format the sd card (still in CWM recovery) and after it formatted I booted up and sure enough to worked!
So this thread can be deleted or locked or whatever. Other people may run into this problem and this worked for me so yea.
Thanks for the thread space lol
Have you tried 4ext Recovery?

[Q] Newly rooted--sd card issues

Awesome newb video by the way! Made me laugh...
Just rooted and I like it, I don't wanna go back, but I can't get the microsd to pick up...I'll give all the info I can--def newb to root/droid but my background is IT, so hopefully we can figure out how to fix it so I can keep the root and not go back to stock(if that would even repair the problem)
Got a pny 32G microSD, droid incredible 4g lte(Verizon) that I rooted using the unlock script and fakeCID and then loaded Vipers Venom LTE custom rom...somewhere in this process-I think right after unlocking-it quit accessing the sd card...I've looked around and read some things about this 'USB brick' thing, but I don't know if it's applicable to me...here's what it does now:
SD card is in phone, but under 'Storage' Total Space and Available show unavailable, and everything else is greyed. If I try and pull the card the phone gives me the 'sd card unexpectedly removed' error.
Windows XP has no issue reading/writing to this card with a card reader. I've formatted a few times fat32 with xp(which i hate doing)and put it back in the phone, with the phone off, booted, and nothing happens. Oddly, when it first happened, after installing the custom ROM, when I'd do this procedure the phone would see the card on boot, but stay forever on 'preparing sd card/checking for errors' and never complete.
Back on the phone side of things, booting into the 'recovery mode', where you flash and whatever, it can see the card, see it's contents, and I wrote some sort of log to the card(option in the menu), so it can access it...oddly, I could not load my Viper rom from the microsd card, it failed on the file, but put it under some folder on the phone and that's how i ended up flashing the ROM, which I was nervous about doing as everything I saw said put the rom on the external sd card...
If I plug the phone into the XP pc via usb cable, choose use as disk drive, no problem accessing phone data, but 'please insert disk' on the card. Cannot push data when in usb debug mode via adb commands either. Oddly, dunno if this is related, it gives me 2 drives and also a CD ROM drive--tried dialing that##7 number for the option to disable cd rom, but it was already disabled. Dunno if this is related, but throwing it in there.
Tried chkdsk on the sd card with Xp, no errors, no problems. Hell, the card's not two weeks old and I've only had the phone a little over a month. I've done a bit of research the past couple of days and the only thing I haven't tried is the very confusing procedure i've seen for some of these 'usb brick' problems, but is that my problem. I'm hoping if all else fails i can go back to stock, just downloaded the stock rom, but will that even fix it? Gots to have my trailer park boys on my sd card to watch! Thanks for the help guys and gals! Sorry for the long post, but I like to give info--if kernel version or any other data like that is required, I can post it.

i tried to slim down your quote, but from my experience i'd still say the sd-card is somehow busted! i had a similar prob with the SD card in my Dinc4G two weeks ago. i _was_ r/w quite fine even from custom rom and at one point, the card just quit. removing and reinserting just ended in "preparing sd-card" and directly after that "safe for removal" ... wasn't able to access it any more within Viper, recovery (TWRP for me) was still seeing the card fine just like on your end.
putting the SD-card into a Win-laptop it _appeared_ fine and came error-free with scandisk etc ... BUT when i tried to backup all data from it before formatting (had like 10G on my 16G card) there were a couple of files that failed to read and i could NOT recover at all anymore. I formatted the SD-card again after that (full format, not fast/quick!) ... and put most of the files back. it is working again now in my Dinc4G but the card sure has some defect sectors (and usually _tends to die soon_ after such errors appear first!
i'd heavily recommend that you try to source some other micro-sd card first and try if you custom rom can read from it again. if that works fine and you see your SD-card from within the settings menu in the rom. you can be pretty sure that it's really the card.
PS: even brand new mem cards tend to fail at times :cyclops: ... just try to erase all private data on it (means: _fully overwrite_ with other stuff until the card is completelly filled) ... and then try to get a replacement from where you got your (fairly new) SD card from.
hope that helps a bit
i agree with the above post... try a different card. if formatting it doesn't fix it, it's time to try a new card.

How do I format SD card?

Hello folks,
Have been using this 64GB Sandisk card in Galaxy S4 for about a year now. Last week, out of nowhere, the phone started acting out. I had to wipe the internal storage and reinstall the ROM. Usually, this ROM takes less than 5 minutes to install but this time it took almost 20 minutes, which is super odd.
I thought of formatting the SD card and starting over
BUT
Any way I try, I can not format this card. If I put the card back in the phone, it asks me to format and if I say yes, it tries but can not format the card.
I tried chkdsk on windows 10 machine, it hung. I had to restart the machine.
I tried checkflash utility, it hung after about 3 hours of write (in write and read mode)
I tried to check if it is in read-only mode, it is not.
I tried SD card formatter from SD card association's website. It fails quick format and for thorough format, it hangs eventually.
I tried to delete the files but it won't delete them either.
How do I deal with this one now?
Thanks in advance.
P.S. - Mods, feel free to move the thread n appropriate section. Wasn't too sure where to post.
