Help a newbie out? - TouchPad General

Hi all,
I am looking to root my HP Touchpad but am a bit overwhelmed by the options available and cautious about the bugs mentioned in various roms.
I have a Nook Tablet rooted to the newly released CM7 so I am familiar with the process but there seem to be alot more options to take with the Touchpad.
Firstly, what should I root to? I am reading it is CM9 rather than CM7. Then some people are crooning about ICS which I have never tried. I also see that when people root it seems to be dual boot method rather than just one...is that mandatory?
Could anyone point me to the thread or a nice guide for rooting to CM9? I see one with CM9 and cornerstone...is this the one everyone is using or a variation of it?

cyanogen mod comes prerooted.
i believe you mean which rom to Flash.
and in regards to your question, i actually have no problems with CM9 atm. It's pretty nice.
if you want a "how to install android on your touchpad", go to rootzwiki and follow the instructions in the cm9 alpha 2 thread.
EDIT: yes, dual booting is mandatory for now afaik. It's a safety mechanism in case something happens. you can atleast revert back to webos and start from scratch then.

Thanks that's exactly what I was looking for.
Ty all for responses.

If I am reading this right, I have to install CM7 first then upgrade to CM9. Is there a marked difference between 7 & 9? I am used to 7 from the Nook Tablet but if CM9 is better for the HP I will get it.

No you do NOT have to install CM7 before installing CM9.
And yes, there is a HUGE difference between the two. CM7 is Gingerbread, originally made for phones (and the occasional tablet - but highly tweaked in those tablet versions). CM9 is a tablet OS that can be tweaked to work with phones.
I highly recommend reading the thread in my first reply, on RootzWiki, which explains what you need to get and download and do in order to install CM9. Or, as I said, PM me, and I'll walk you through it.

Can you direct me to that thread? Not sure what you mean by thread in your first reply.
I need a guide that is using the new CM9. I am using this page which was linked to me. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23740765But looking at this page all tuorials seem to be Cm7 or something else. Maybe it's there but I am not seeing it.
For example, is this CM9? http://rootzwiki.com/topic/10121-releasealpha35cyanogenmod-touchpad/ Or is this something else? It just says CM Touchpad.

Okay, first off. Your second link is not CM9, it's CM7. You can tell by reading it. At the bottom, the author discusses CM7. I think the current official release of CM9 is Alpha2. Check here. There's a link in that article, but you'll have to read it. Here is the link to CM9. Alpha3.5 was CM7 from November of last year. CM9 Alpha2 is from February of this year.
To find the CM9 link is pretty easy. Look near the top of the link you posted, almost in the (top) center of the page, there's a link that says 'CyanogenMod[Touchpad]'. That's the link to the 'parent forum'. By clicking that link you'll find the posts in that forum. If you look at the light grey in each post, there are dates there. CM9 Alpha2 is currently the most recent official version, so logically, it's the post with the most recent date.
And like I said, if you look on Youtube for a 'Reverend Kyle', he explains everything you need to know in very simple terms. His videos are very easy to follow, and you can even do it without reading the full RootzWiki page. You can probably even find a direct link to the files on his youtube videos, so you won't even have to use google.
The install procedures for CM9 and CM7 are exactly the same. They use different files, but the process is the exact same.

Thanks for clearing these things up for me.
I suspected the install procesdures were identical, but wasn't 100% sure and knowing me that's where i'd mess it up - leaving out something v. important.
I see on the CM9 link there are links to Reverends video guides, so I am gonna start watching his channel and take it from there.

His vids are very explanatory. He's also got his own forum and an Android app that both might also be useful.
Plus he's a SUPER-nice guy. He'll answer any questions you have if you post in his forum or as a comment to one of his youtube vids. Although, his forum would probably be faster.

Success! I did it using the videos and it went off without a hitch. He breaks it down so well. Some things I even had to skip past because he was explaining them in such length - which is no bad thing.
Anyways, thank you steering me in the right direction.

[Q] Ethernet on the dock

Guys,
How to make the ethernet work on the dock?
I keep reading that works on tnt lite 3.1.4 and in others ROM but unfortunately I am on 3588 stock ROM and I am wondering if there is any way to make it work. I got the market working on it (btw, full market) and I am very happy with the stock 3588 - I mean, I have no FC, it is running perfect... the only thing that I can't figure it out is what to do to make the ethernet at the dock work.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Off topic sorry, I was looking for info on dock for gTablet and a working ethernet, and I saw that you are on stock 3588, I am too. How did you get the Market to work, I am assuming you have the ANDROID Market. Also, what do you do to avoid force closes, I get them all the time. music player, web, games, just all kinds of apps give me force closes. Perhaps I have downloaded to many apps that are not really for gTablet, they are for phones and other Android tabs, I don't know why the tab has so many force closes. Sorry again for hijacking, I'm new to Android, so I'm sort of lost, ok lost, Thanks
- Tex
I believe the fix for all the force closings is repartitioning.
That's the point where I decided to load a custom rom. If you go that way I recommend Roebeet's Brilliant Corners. You can find it on Slatedroid.
Edited to add: If you aren't going to load a custom rom then you might want to take a look at this stickied thread:

I'll take a look and read up on Roebeet's Brillant Corners, I'm not familiar with that. I'm hoping to not have to put a rom on this thing, it's a little scary =). I just want it to work out of the box, ha ha ha, not with this tablet, anyway. I'll read the link you posted, thanks.

I promise you, it just sounds scary. It's really easy as pie, and you'll be amazed at the difference in your tab afterwards. You'll think somebody stole yours and left you a real one in it's place.
Roebeet's dev support is second to none, imho, if you decide to go with BC. Very helpful to us n00bs.
I figured that if I had to bother with installing clockworkmod and repartitioning due to fc's, I might as well just do the whole enchilada. Haven't looked back since and don't miss stock rom a bit

Thanks for the post. Yeah it is sort of scary =) ha ha. I'm sure once you get started and you follow the instructions it's not that difficult. Yeah that Roebeet guy seems to be all over this forums and others too. Seems very smart and helpful. I'll have to read the instructions, would be nice to have a step by step guide and a video. I'm not the sharpest knife =). It does make sense if I was going to spend time rebooting and restarting apps and blah blah, then fixing it would remove the problem all together.
Another reason for not taking the plunge to get a rom is the possibility of getting Honeycomb. I don't know. Then yesterday I was told that Ice Cream Sandwich is coming out too, what the heck. Anyway, thanks for your response and suggestions.
- Tex

Poll. Which Honeycomb Rom are you using and Why

Let me start by saying i do not live on xda and do not keep up with every development. I had been happily using Vegan 5.1 and then Vegan-Gingerbread until this week when my wifi crapped out on me.
I went with the new Flashback-Honeycomb and REALLY like it but i noticed very few people posting about it, while the other honeycomb rom pages have hundreds of posts (mostly people complaing that something doesnt work or asking why they cant get it working ((when they didnt follow the directions usually))..
Anyway,...without taking 40 hours of my time and reading nearly 1,000 pages of "how come i am boot looped?", I wanted to make a post here and ask the few "in the know" what the REAL skinny is on the various alpha Honeycombs available. What features really work on each (and what doesn't), which ones are the best/fastest/have the most promise.
....and in a cogent, short, logical, concise thread..without thousands of "but why can't i...." posts mixed in.
Thanks!
Allen
None, because it's still in alpha, and I prefer a Rom that doesn't require me to make posts asking "why can't I..."
Seriously though, all of them are derivitives of "bottle of smoke," and you didn't even list that as an option. It's in version 6.0, now.

While some of that is taken as a good point i have to respond.
Even in alpha form, i already like Honeycomb-Flashback better than vegan 5.1 or Vegan-Gingerbread. It looks better, is more intuitive for a tablet format and flows fine.
....and
I have not had a single custom ROM yet that didnt have SOME kind of compromise/one thing that didnt work/problem. Not to mention what you give up using any of the versions of this thing STOCK.
Now that we cleared that up. Back on topic please!
Honestly, I think they are all variations on the same theme right now. And I mean the Adam ROM as the source, not BoS.
I do like what I've seen in Flashback, not to soft-sell it. I've pulled back for the summer (I've mentioned this before - not selling my GTAB, just want to enjoy / get annoyed by my kids being off). With the last BoS alpha, I was looking at Flashback and I liked what the tlbardelljr was doing, ie. the updates to the framework.
But in general, I like what all the modders / devs are doing. I know that some people are a bit overwhelmed by all the different mods, but better too many than too little!

I completely understand that BOS was a derivitive of other Adam roms, but, the roms listed are all direct modifications of BOS.
You took the Adam roms and ported them to the G-Tablet, then others have tweaked YOUR rom in order to create their own monster. I was just making the point that all of the roms listed are derived from BOS, yet BOS wasn't even listed as an option.
Flashback
I originally started with BoS 5.2 and loved it. Was holding off on updating to 6.0 hoping additional updates would be made available after the 6/27 Notion Ink updates.
Then last night I saw that Flashback has added limited flash support so I decided to jump over and try that. So far, so good though I haven't had much of a chance to play with it yet. It does seem to boot quite a bit slower than BoS but I appreciate what flash capability it has so I will probably test it out some more tonight. If BoS had flash I would be going with that but we shall see...

I think all respomses to the OP must be on topic. You can change the look by (for example) using VTL launcher.
Has anyone tried Netflix with Flashback?
If so, and it works fine (maybe with the "manufacturer=HTC" fix), then soon my answer to the poll shall be Flashback

[Q] Just bought a G-tablet. QUESTIONS NEED TO BE ANSWERED

1. How is video acceleration on Honeycomb? I heard either Bos or Illuminate has video acceleration?
2. Best overclocking kernel for beginners. I'm looking for a quick and easy solution to install. Post the best tutorial(s)
3. Does netflix work? If so, post the best tutorial(s)
4. I have a Seagate Freeagent 1.5tb portable hard drive (USB 3.0). Will I be able to hook that up to the tablet and watch my movies/videos on it?
Thanks!
EDIT: I bought it from Tigerdirect.ca for $269 + taxes and it should be here on Monday
*Sigh*
The current honeycomb roms are not recommended for beginners. Right now, only froyo has full hardware acceleration. Nothing else have hardware acceleration. I suggest you start out with froyo first before you take it further.
All honeycomb roms are in their alpha stages and therefore only recommended for testers and experienced users. I swear, if I see another beginner whining about the lack of full functionality on the honeycomb roms...
I'm not complaining. Just inquiring
goodintentions I'm going to borrow your line,
I highly recommend an iPad.
Read, Read, Read!!!!!!
Do your homework before you write the final exam Seriously, I've done more reading on here than I've done modding on my Gtab. There are plenty of sources of good info on here. Don't rush into action before you read the experiences and recommendations of others.
Start with the stock 3588.
Use it for a few days.
Then try Vegan-Tab for a few days.
Then try Vegan Gingerbread RC1
You can also try CM7
If you're happy, dont change.
If you have learned all the nuances, and want to experiment, learn NVFlash and go nuts...
But what about playing videos from the external hard drive mentioned?
To give you an idea of the mentality recently on this site, I'l edit your post title...
"Just bought a G-Tablet, DON'T WANT TO LOOK FOR MY OWN ANSWERS"
Just today, I read a post that spoke ot external harddrives. I haven't personally tried it yet, but someone mentioned that as long as the hard drive works under it's own power (not a flash drive) that it should work. But here's an idea for you, plug it in and try it...see for yourself if it works or not.
to your other questions:
1. How is video acceleration on Honeycomb? I heard either Bos or Illuminate has video acceleration?
On Froyo roms it works fine, Gingerbread roms have a pieced together form of it by overclocking, but there are no Nvidea drivers for Gingerbread. Likewise, there are also no drivers for Honeycomb.
2. Best overclocking kernel for beginners. I'm looking for a quick and easy solution to install. Post the best tutorial(s)
Look for your own tutorials, man. I've been using Calkulin/Clemsyn combo for about a week and love it. (Clemsyn part is the kernel) Really, you'll only find 2 different kernels that are popular. Clemsyn and Pershoot. Both are great
3. Does netflix work? If so, post the best tutorial(s)
Netflix only works 100% on CM7, but tweaking is necessary. Right now, I suggest that you forget about netflix and use the tablet for apps that actually work on it.
to be honest, all of your questions can be answered simply by browsing these forums. Hell, just looking for 10 minutes I can find a post called "Best Roms?" "Fastest most stable roms?" There are many about netflix alone. And It's basic knowledge, from reading, reading, and more reading, that ONLY FROYO ROMS HAVE HARDWARE DRIVERS THAT ENABLE ACCELERATION.
now, start reading...when you think you're done, read some more. When you're done, go to Slatedroid and read some more...and then some more...pretty soon, you'll be an expert!

1) Only SW acceleration which seems to work OK for up to 480p
2) My opinion Clemsyn for Froyo, Pershoot for Gingerbread
3) It works great with CM7 stable
4) Doubt it since I think Freeagent requires power from the USB port, but try it and let us know. It should not hurt anything.
I tried Vegan Tab 5.1.1, BoS, CM7.0.3, and a bunch of others that did not last long for various reasons. I have completely settled on CM7.0.3 Stable and have a very solid tablet which I have not had to repartition at all (with 5.1.1 I was always having to repartition after crashes). Tried CM7.1 release candidate and it gave me fits with a few things, so I am going to wait to the next RC before I move. I really, really like CM7 and it works with Netflix (need to get the netflix app from here). On CM7, I use MoboPlayer to play movies. It has a setting where you can disable HW acceleration and use SW acceleration. That has worked great for my movies although I do not encode HD, I stay at 480p and thereabouts.

Nah, we're not tough. I've been to tougher forums. At least he got answers to his questions.
BUT, that being said, Kyle is obviously not a master of finding answers for himself. Everytime I ask a question (and I do, trust me) is only after I've read just about every thread I can find that may help me. In other words...if I had a problem with an app not working, first I'd check the Themes and apps section, of THIS forum and Slatedroid. If no answer, then I'll check the thread that specifically deals with the rom I am on, and yes, I'll read every boring page of it. I may even check G-Tablet for Dummies to see if Goodintentions addresses it, or not. THEN, before asking the question ,I'll use this little invention called "Google." You see, "master"kyle, Google is what's called a search engine. If you type words into it, it will give you a list of web pages that might help you with the words you typed.
I have no problem with people that come here with a problem, and tell us that they tried, this, and that, from this thread, or that thread, or that web page, etc...but their problem persists. At least I know that they made the attempt to answer their own questions. But to come here and say that you purchased a device, haven't received it yet, then DEMAND answers to questions in which the answers only require a browsing of the forums (not even a full blown search, just scroll down!!!)
yeah, no patience for those people...they are the ones that really NEED an iPad.
TJ, I intended my post to be facetious. Sorry if that didn't come through. You were all pretty gentle with him - more waterguns than flamethrowers.
Thanks for all of the responses. I am new to this Gtablet forum and I find the information posted about the hardware acceleration is sketchy: BoS or Illuminate roms have said to use hardware acceleration without the proper drivers? Why do you think I asked you all of these questions? I have a freeagent drive and I'm not sure it will work yet since it will be arriving tomorrow. I need to know whether or not to buy a 32gb sd card for the gtablet for some movies. ALL I REALLY WANTED TO KNOW IS WHICH ROM TO STICK WITH ASKING THESE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS. If you cannot understand that, they don't give me some ass-comment "Well you should know and search". If you have a problem with my post, then GTFO. If you wish to help me, then please post a response. I do enjoy some of the posts on this thread. Thanks all

If you cannot understand that, they don't give me some ass-comment "Well you should know and search". If you have a problem with my post, then GTFO. If you wish to help me, then please post a response. I do enjoy some of the posts on this thread. Thanks all

Try this Kyle maybe I got the wrong info but it was my understanding that you couldnt use a 32 gb sd card on a gtab. If I am wrong please someone correct me as I do make mistakes now and then.
Will a 32gb flash or micro sd work?

Thank you very much! Just got it running, so far no issues or force closes. I have been waiting on a 1.1 bl honeycomb. Thank you!
Wow! Great news, definitely gonna give this a try, had lots of issues the last time I used a 1.2 based bootloader,so I'm really glad to see this!
Thanks!

Editing out, as I PM'd the OP instead.
Thanks in advance.

I'm actually surprised that it took this long.
We used the 1.2 bl initially because we had to as we ported directly from the Adam devs. But once there were Clem kernel ports, it wasn't technically a requirement anymore. I just never changed my port as my opinions on 1.2 are already well-stated and sticking with it made sense to me, at least. But that doesn't mean that a 1.1 based HC ROM was impossible.
However, if NI releases a HC port and it's using a .36 kernel to make everything work, this 1.1 ROM might have issues with porting that. But this is all speculation, at this point - I don't know if a NI port will even work on a GTAB yet, regardless of the bootloader used.
does this has the same bl 1.2 version issues or just the usb to pc?!
bl 1.2 version has these issues:
(copied from other forum)
- Camera isn't working (pulled out the app for now)
- Browser is working, but OpenGL is disabled for it to work. That means no Flash on the stock browser.
- (High-def) video playback does not work, yet.
any testers can confirm this? i'm a bit feeling lazy to try it today
confirmed but very smooth i love it its not reading my sdcard though how can i get it to read sd card?

Editing out , as I PM'd the OP. Nothing bad, just some suggestions is all.
Awwwww, yeah! I'm pumped. Is this essentially the same as Roebeet's BOS, with the same features not working yet?
This is great news!
Is it accelerated?
Does it run Flash 10.3?
TIA

Odd...seems to work ok on mine.
I did notice that it's called "/external_sd" though, might want to check to see if you have that on your device.
Justin

One other thing, on a good note -- I'm definitely happy to see more modders our there for the GTablet. Options are always a good thing and I plan to pull back a bit, starting new month. So the more HC ports we have, the better!
Quick question... If I'm running Vegan 5.1.1, what do I need to do to install this ROM? Full wipe? Just flash it from CWM? Something else entirely?
Sorry, I'm still a bit of a noob at all of this, but I promise I'm trying to learn!

I was really hesitant to post anything, as I really don't want you taking this the wrong way. I apologize if it came off as anything else but a concern for post-support, that was not my intent (and, in retrospect, a PM would have been better. My bad).
The branding, for me, is mostly about post-support. Remember, I'm a sysadmin by trade so when I get PM's on issues, I usually ask the usual questions like what mod, what version, how did you install it, etc. That's actually why I started branding "TNT Lite" as such back in November, as it was easier for me to know if a user was actually using my ROM or not. That's really my only concern, here. When two different mods are branded the same, it will get confusing. Especially if they are on two different development branches. It is fun, I agree - that's why I do this. But for users who soft-brick, it's sometimes a major panic attack and a lot of them are hesitant to use nvflash.

Robeet, I think you were spot on, the OP is not reading it correctly. I can just see the flood of posts/PM's asking you questions and users cross posting between 1.1/1.2 because of this and the difficulty of tracking all this. it's difficult enough keeping up with all these great roms and boot loader types, I could not imagine what it is like on your guys side.
OP he is not dissing you, he is just asking that you rename it so you can support issues and he does not have to keep getting cross questions, it's pretty much non-issue in my eyes.
OP, thanks for supporting the Gtab and the 1.1. people like all you devs that make android so much fun and android FTW over IOS.

Yes, full wipe and flash it. do a backup of course just incase you want to go back. back up your apps as well so you can restore them on the other side of HC.

And it starts....says "Bottle of Smoke" in your XDA app.
Remember - it's a fork of BoS. It has a different kernel and possibly a different ramdisk, so I don't know how it will perform versus BoS (the original one).

Maybe this should be called something like "Bottle of Smoke MOD" since technically it is a modified version of the original.

[Q] Permanent Root for NT with CM7

I have a Nook Tablet 8gig that I rooted about 10 months ago with no problems. I have had no complaints so I have not mucked around with it, but now I am wondering about updating a bit. The issue is that I want to be able to use an external keryboard dock with my NT, and I read that it was only possible with CM7 (not sure if that means CM7 and above). I rooted the NT using the great instructions and files recommended in the developers thread, but to be honest I have no idea what my nook is rooted with- it works well so I have not messed with it.
I am essentially looking for instructions on how to re-root my NT after I re-set it to factory, or how to alter my current root to run CM7. My screen is half wonked, and I may take it back since I got the extended warrenty, especially if I have to re-root it for this anyway.
Also...what is CM7? Is that an Android version?
As a side note: Can anyone confirm that you can use an external keyboard with CM7 or above?
What do you want to do first?...do you want to return to stock so that you can return your nt...or do you want to flash cm7? (cm7 is a ROM by the way a version of Android os)

Ultimately what I want to do is run an external keyboard, and the information I have is that they will run on CM7. I will probably (assuming my warranty will cover this) be getting this one fixed to replaced soon, so I will need to re-root when I get it back, but for now I don't see the need to re-root if I don't have to.
What does it mean to "flash" cm7?

If your nook is broken already, why bother doing anything to it? Just get it fixed then address the things you want to address. And while you are waiting for the replacement see the next line.
After reading above quote along with your original post you honestly need to read...A LOT. You need to learn at least the basic lingo before you even make an attempt to do anything. Failure to have even an iota of understanding will only lead to failure, complaints, and frustration. Spend a few hours going through the posts on here. There are several new user guides. Read them. Re-Read them. Read them again. Learn to understand what people are talking about when someone says something like "Flash x, y, or z".
As for the keyboard question, I am fairly certain that it doesn't work on ANY rom. They are working on getting the OTG portion of the kernel ironed out. While it is called a tablet it is a glorified E-Reader. The devs have done an awesome job making the Nooks into what they are today (for those of us that have modified them),

Any good links to layman information sites or tutorials? I was able to Root it easily (it is pretty simple), but I will admit that some of the android specific terminology does go over my head.

I have read several places where cm7 has allowed keyboard use for users. They are not expensive, and I would really like to try.
As for getting it fixed...well I love my nook and use it every day, so I have been loathe to take it in. I suppose that is silly.

You will love it more when it works completely and isn't "wonky". You will survive without it for a little bit. Trust me you won't die. Also because CM7 allows for a keyboard doesn't mean every device running CM7 will. Search the forums for more information. I know that some of the developers have been working on it for CM10 but I don't recall seeing any posts saying that they have it working definitively.
As for specific sites or tutorials. Just visit the various android boards and look for the Noob guides. Search google for more details on subjects you want to know about.

Thank, I just took it back to Best Buy and they replaced it with an HD. I thought about an HD+, but I use my nook for reading more than anything (lots of comics, some novels), and the 9" is much less comfortable for that. Now I need to root this bad boy, and I don't have to monkey around with roms other than rooting because the HD already has support for an external keyboard.
This can be closed, as far as I am concerned. Thanks.
