[Q] S2 Rooting, resetting Assistance Required - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Everyone,
I'm quite new to android so, please pardon me if I say anything wrong.
Here's my story:
I rooted my Galaxy S2 following this video on Youtube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3YP5bHo04Y
Rooting was successful, everything went fine. But later in the day, when I connected my phone to my computer, and opened Samsung Kies, it notified me that there's an firmware update. So ofcourse , I updated my firmware.
After updating, I found out that Superuser is gone and I no longer had root access.
So yeah, I tried rooting following the video above again, however, this time it did not work. It says something "permission" errors and It says "Cleaning up" then rebooted my phone.
After my phone rebooted, it says my phone is rooted but when i checked in my phone, it's not. No Superuser, no root access. Tried installing superuser in market, did not work. So here are my current phone details.
Current phone details:
Phone : Samsung Galaxy S2, GT-I9100
Android version : 2.3.6
Baseband Version : I9100DXKL1
Kernel Version: [email protected] #2
Build number : GINGERBREAD.DXKL3
How can I reset this phone completely (unrooted) so that I can root it again ?
i'm new to android os, so yeah, please help !
Thanks,
SotongzXc

The easiest would be to download a custom rom to your SD card (I suggest CheckROM RevoHD v6) and one of Chainfire's insecure kernels.
Step one: make sure you know the location of the custom firmware on your phone (it's in a ZIP file)
Step two: flash Chainfire's kernel with ODIN from your PC (now you will have CWM recovery)
Step three: enter recovery on your phone by holding volume up + home + power button. Do the wipes and install the ZIP update
Step four: uninstall KIES and rather install the drivers only (just google Samsung USB drivers 1.4.8.0)
I hope this helps. PM me if you still have issues.

You can also retry the method you first used, but do what is called the "RAM crash" method. Load apps on your phone and keep them active (by pressing Home instead of Back) until your phone is using over 500 MB of RAM. (Actual RAM. Not system storage. You may need an app to check this.) Then try that method again.

Rooting your Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100
This guide is thanks to capaxdoli, I have just modified it slightly to make it easier to read
If you use this guide to root your phone please go and thank him here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1126522
Also please give this page a read it is the basics of rooting and should be considered the starting point for all learning to root - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125282
Also another thanks should go to Chainfire - For his great work on kernels http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
1. Make sure your phone has kies 2 and have it install all the drivers.
2. Connected phone for the first time to computer and kies 2 and it recognized it fine.
3. Make sure Kies 2 is also fully updated.
4. The details of my phone are as follows: (please check what yours are)
Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100 (please only use this guide for this phone)
Fireware – 2.3.4
Kernel = XXKI4 (the important bit is the Ki4)
You can find all this info out in Settings – about phone
5. A prayer to My Lord for safe rooting
6. Go to this page and read all, then select the Kernel that is a match to yours – here – http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
7. Since I have Ki4, i had chosen to download this file [CF-Root-SGS2_XW_ODD_Ki4-v4.0-CWM4.zip]
8. Downloaded odin3-v1.85.zip here - http://www.mediafire.com/?wezzl287wb9v9hu
Extract and open the file (no installation...gasp!)
Open and run Odin ready to root your phone
Now select PDA and find the kernel that you downloaded and select
9. You might need to extract the kernel to select it in the PDA
10. Put your phone in download mode (press volume down + ok key + power on), a warning about custom OS flashes, press volume up key to continue.
11. You have pressed volume up key and the phone says that it has entered ODIN mode. it also says the following:
a. product name: GT-i9100
b. Custom Binary Download : No
c. current binary : Samsung Official
d. it also shows the android logo (the robot - big size) and says downloading...Do not turn off target !!
12. After this connected the phone to the computer (remember it is in download mode) and the drivers were installed again.
13. Go to Odin and you should see that under ID.com, there is a yellow background box and it says 0:[COM13]. in the message box (lower left corner) it says <ID:0/013> Added!!
14. Make sure the re-partition box is not checked in odin.
15. Clicked the start button...
16. The phone should install your new kernel and then re-boot it should show a yellow exclamation mark when it reboots.
17. That’s it your phone is now rooted –

No, you don't need Rom Manager. Once you root the device, you download the ROM you want and place it in /sdcard. You can place it there before root but there is no point. Then make backup and flash it with Clockworkmod Recovery.
One advice though: when you download a ROM most developers provide a md5 checksum, check this md5 sum with some md5 checker tool. Then when you transfer it to the sdcard, check the md5 sum again. When they match - flash on. If they don't match you most probably wont brick your phone but it won't flash and you'll have to re-download and check sums.
I am sorry I can't give you an advice on kernels though.
gl hf rooting and flashing.
Thanks for the advice
Hi (den dobryi),
when i rooted my sgs2 i used odin. the process was the following:
1) get odin and read how to use it here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
2) download root kernel here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
3) flash the kernel, reboot and you are done - nazdrave ;]]
I would also like to know can you add any custom SGS2 rom to any rooted phone, i will be flashing with one of chainfire's CF-roots. Also is there a rom for ice cream sandwhich yet and where can i get it, as this is the rom i am after mainly.
P.S thanks for the reply morespama
no worries, the answer is yes - you can switch to any sg2 custom rom - but most require full wipe - so all your data like games/apps//ect will be deleted - read ^a lot of back ups or long sessions of trial and error^.
If you are after ICS rom then its still in Beta and hence the official version is still unavailable. But the latest stable custom version is the one im running - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1488063. the only thing is that you may have to ask your network to send you network data/mobile internet setings via sms since the instalation resets them as in my case. other then that perfect native ICS..;]]
Thanks again i might wait for a more stable full release. So if you are switching roms and it wips all yoir data, what is the best way to backup and restore all of your personal setting and apps when moving to a new rom
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
I use Titanium Backup, you can get it cracked all over google or at ipmart-forum.com
Thanks again, i have just rooted my phone, so simple when it comes down to it, although i just wanted to make sure i did not miss anything. My next stage is to install a custom rom so i better get down to geeking up on this now. Also i think i will post how i did this in this thread, as i think i can explain the very basics to people.
Thanks for your help, i hope you accept my friend request.
Glad to help. Flashing rom is probably easier then rooting ). Pm me if you need help.

Galaxy Player 5.0 US (2.3.5) not rooting

SuperOneClick seems to stall at the point where it says 'Starting ADB Server'. I do have the drivers installed & have transferred stuff back & fourth over USB, so I'm confident that it's not a driver issue. It is frustrating that I rooted other devices w/o a hitch when this one just isn't budging. My US Galaxy Player 5.0 is running 2.3.5. Has anyone else had this issue rooting their US model Galaxy Player 5.0? How might I solve this?
Thanks.
Have you tried odin to flash kernel? But make sure you have the from on your internal sd card before falshing.and also make sure u put the phone in download mode ie power+vol down. I have attached the odin.
Put the .tar file at the pda section and click start
once is down boot into cwm bye holding power+vol up.
Am I supposed to do anything else after that to be rooted? Or is it now done since I followed them steps & got a pass?
you are rooted find a Rom .zip and install from cwm or if you are not on the stock rom install the stock rom with odin at the pda section.
One of the last lines in the log should be something like 'testing su' if that says pass, it means the rooting was successful. (note: su is the linux command used to become the root user).
When you run an app requiring root, you'll get a prompt asking if you want to allow it to run as root. Once you say yes for an app, it'll just flash a 'app was was granted superuser permission' message for a couple seconds each time the app starts (this can be changed in the settings of Superuser).

Rooting galaxy 2 9100g failed

hi guys, I'm a new owner of samsung galaxy sii 9100g, I tried to root my device but it seems that there was something wrong in my procedure. and my procedure was as below:
1. I downloaded the GT-I9100G_DZKI1_insecure zip file which it was not the same kernal as the origin one the my phone has.
2. I used Odin3 v1.83 to pass the insecure kernal file and it was done ok
3. finally, I used S2Root_1.5.1_Release to root my phone, and also it was ok.
But yet it was not rooted and I couldn't install any custom rom in recovery mode, it wasn't seen at all.
so please please help me to root this phone.
Device Manufacturer: SAMSUNG
Device Model: GT-I9100G
ROM Build: GT-I9100G-user 2.3.4 GINGERBREAD JPKH8 release-keys
download any gingerbread 2.3.6 firmware.
choose a custom kernel of your preference. lucifer, streetware, superatmos etc. download and flash with odin.
once rooted, download whichever rom you prefer
I upgraded my Galaxy S II I9100G to ICS V4.0.3 , then i tried to root using V4 of zergrush toolkit & tried both the methods (conventional & memory crash) & both the times i used the "edited runme.bat" !!! The process goes on till it reads
"ALL DONE!!!
Press any key to continue . . ."
After the device reboot there is no evidence of "superuser" in the app drawer nor is there any evidence in the device info (settings->about phone) !!
In short this method is not working on my ICS upgraded I9100G !! Any help will be highly appreciated !!
Is there a proper rooting solution for ICS upgraded I9100G ??

I used advanced method 2 its really easy. Took literally 2 minutes.
i Failed once again
Thank you ad_ek and the others for your reply.
i think I have done something wrong to my device. now I could send kernals with Odin, but my mistake was when I installed this custom rom (cm-9.0.0-RC1-i9100g.zip) without making any backups or even be sure of rooting my phone correctly. now it keeps starts up in recovery mode only and i could install cm-9.0.0-RC1-i9100g.zip and SuperROM_v3.1.zip. this last rom asks to be sure of permission and reboot, but it reboots only in recovery mode. i also was able to root my device with (root.zip) which installs many files like superuser but nothing was change one recover mode.
i tried to download Update Galaxy S2 to Android 2.3.6 XXKL1 Firmware but it was only one big file which i couldn't download because of my internet low speed.
now I'm only keep looking at a dying phone
So not a development topic, its a question. Moved to Q&A

[Q] Can't update my Galaxy S3 or connect to Kies & Is it really rooted?

I have searched multiple threads and sites, however, I still haven't found someone that's had a similar problem to mine, so here it goes.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S III GT-I9300 and the Android version is currently 4.0.4 (More information about my device in the screenshots below)
I've been trying to update it to the latest Android version (Jellybean 4.3 I believe, since Kit Kat 4.4 is not yet available for Samsung Galaxy devices yet). However, whenever I try to do a Software update, it tells me "No update available". Someone suggested that I install the updates through Kies, and I did install Kies on my Mac (OS X 10.9.1), but it won't connect to my phone--as in, it will say "Connecting" for hours without ever connecting to the phone or it will say "Connecting" for a few seconds then tell me to "Please connect a device". I've checked with my phone, and it says "Connected as a media device" with the USB symbol to the left of it. I have also tried to unplug my USB cord, enable USB debugging mode, and plug it back into my Mac to no avail.
The phone is fairly new, I got it a couple of weeks ago from China. I believe that it is rooted since it had to be unlocked to work with US carriers (I'm on T-Mobile network), but at the same time I'm also not quite sure. The phone status says 'Modified', if that helps at all.
SuperSU is installed on my phone (I wasn't the one who installed it), but when I try to access the application, it tells me "There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem!
CWM Manager is also installed (v3.60), but it says "This version of CWM Manager should be used with CF-Root v5.0 or newer. It apepars you are running a different kernel. Various features have been disabled." I don't know what CF-Root is, and I don't think that it's installed on my phone either, since I can't find it in my Application Manager.
I installed an application called RootValidator from the Google Play store, and when I run it, it tells me "No, but you might have root as our request was denied. Did you deny root access? While you don't have a busy box, it is not required to root a device, some apps just need it." (See attachments for more information)
So now my questions are...:
Is my phone actually rooted or not? If it is, how can I grant or deny root access? (I want to download TitaniumBackup, but it requires root access, which I don't know how to give)
Since Kies isn't reading/connecting my device, how can I get Kies to connect to my phone?
And since my phone keeps on telling me "No update available" whenever I try to do a software update, I'm going to assume that I have to update my phone's firmware by using Kies. And if my phone is rooted/unrooted, but I can't connect to Kies, how can I update my Android 4.0.4 to the latest Jellybean 4.3 version?
Thank you for any help you can give!

First of all, I suggest you reboot your device into download mode:
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1tdznfLJsyY
And check if the device info actually indicates its i9300 (just to be sure that you didn't fall into quality fake)
Second, (and I suggesting using a pc for following procedures) try to reinstall kies (make sure you aren't using kies3) and make sure your device is recognized as i9300. Most chances that you won't be able to update with kies, but samsung drivers are needed.
Third- you've got 2 options:
1- flash sumsung's newest official rom fron sammobile using this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671969
2- root your device using this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3#root
Than install this updated recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2002953
If all goes well, you'll be able to install custom roms using the recovey. Like this awesome one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2060403
Ps- if something isn't clear enough, feel free to ask.

Thanks a lot for your help!
So for the first step, I rebooted it into the Download mode following the video tutorial you linked to, and it told me:
ODIN MODE
Product Name: GT-I9300
Custom Binary Download: Yes (4 counts)
Current Binary: Custom
System Status: Custom
So I'm assuming that yes, my Samsung is an official I9300 device?
For the second step, does it matter which version of Kies I install as long as it's not Kies 3?
For the first option in the third step, will flashing the newest official ROM still allow me to keep on the T-Mobile network? (Since I originally had this device bought in China then had someone else unlock it so that it could be compatible with the US network carriers)
Thanks again!

1-It seems so (but if you want to do a double-check: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cpuid.cpu_z and see if it says 'Exynos 4412' in the SOC tab, and 'GT-I9300' + '832MB of ram' in System.
2- Get the lastest available.
3- Then I suggest using the second method. If you already have working CWM recovery, than you should be able to install Philz recovery directly as a zip file in your current recovery.
After updating the recovery (and backing-up all important data!), download NeatRom zip file, and copy it into device's SD.
Reboot to recovery mode, do "wipe to install new rom" + "wipe cache partition" + "advance->wipe delvik cache", and than-
"instal zip from sd/sd1 (depends on where you saved the zip of neatRom) and follow installation instructions.
after the flashing is done, check if the sim works as it should, if not- than you'll have 2 option to unlock it (which costs about 5-7$):
1- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spocky.galaxsimunlock
2- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GefyYn63dR4
There are some free turorials online, but they seem to be for older versions / questioned reliability...
A word of caution- moving to 4.3 will change the EFS partition to V2, which by itself isn't a problem (but causing a real headache for those trying to downgrade).

[RESOLVED] Help upgrade a SHV-E160S 4.0.4 IMM76D.VH29 to latest??

Hi guys!
This is my first time to post a thread in this forum, I just bought a Samsung Note with model SHV-E160S, Android Version 4.0.4 and Build# IMM76D.VH29. I know that this is a Korean Variant and I'm using it here in Philippines (I can send SMS -- Openline). I don't know if this phone is already rooted, I don't know how to check.
What I'm trying to accomplish is to upgrade this phone from 4.0.4 to 4.1.2 then later on upgrade it to Android Lollipop 5.1 and I don't know how. It will be a great pleasure if someone help me or direct me on what should I do.
I'm totally new to android devices and I'm not familiar on how to upgrade, update or root an android device.
Thanks!
Hello guys, any ideas? Thanks!

You'll be able to find your firmware here https://mega.nz/#F!IxJTDDQQ!TTgzxjX8d7EnzemoIj0ogg
4.1.2 was the last official update from Samsung for your device. If you want to update to newer than that, it will have to be done via updating with a custom recovery and custom rom, such as TWRP recovery and CyanogenMod 11 or 12/12.1.
Follow upgrade instructions from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997 and sub your firmware file instead of N7000.

Thank you es0tericcha0s for this information.
What I'm trying to do right now is updating my SHV-e160s from 4.0.4 to 4.1.2 using Kies v2.6. Unfortunately, I'm getting this error "Failed to run firmware upgrade: unknown error.". Until now, I'm afraid to update my firmware manually as I don't have much knowledge to do that.
1) Download firmware and Odin
2) Open Odin as admin
3) Load firmware in PDA or AP slot depending on which version of Odin used
4) Boot to Download Mode and plug in your phone
5) Once Odin recognizes it ( will show highlighted - COM:xx where "xx" is any number, doesn't matter which ones) hit start
6) Grab a drink and a snack and come back in 10 minutes or so
7) If device bootloops, reset in recovery
Once the files are downloaded, the whole process takes less than 10-12 minutes or so. Everything you need is in the guide I linked to besides the firmware you need, which is in the Mega link. If you need a video guide, there are dozens on YouTube. I find it much easier to use than Kies and once you have it working, then there are not many things you will do that restoring with Odin and a factory reset won't get you out of.

Hello, sorry I forgot to ask, will this root my device? I'm afraid I might bricked it.
No, this is just the official update. As long as the download is good and you follow those directions, you won't do anything that won't be easily recoverable if it doesn't work right away. Soft bricking is not a big deal and nothing you would do here would cause anything worse unless you unplug the phone in the middle of something important.

And because you'll probably ask... It's easy to root. Just download Chainfire's SuperSU zip, put it on your phone's storage and use Odin to install TWRP recovery (just like you do with the whole firmware package) , boot to recovery before it boots to the OS and install the zip. Reboot and enjoy.

Hello again es0tericcha0s, I haven't tried the instructions that you gave me yesterday as I'm still downloading the firmware, last night I encountered an issue after enabling my Bluetooth, something like "NFC Service has stopped." just keeps on popping up. So I turned off the bluetooth then restarted my phone, it went well for a while.
After that, I enabled my 3G Cellular Data to check what was NFC service error is, after a few minutes, I lost my signal, phone turned to No Service, then in Settings -> About Phone, I got an Unknown Baseband.
EDIT
I got No Service since last night up until now.
EDIT Oct. 13, 2015 9:49 AM +08:00 Manila Time
I manage to update my phone from ICS 4.0.4 to JB 4.1.2. But still, my baseband is Unknown and I have no signal.
If it did that before you tried to flash anything...that doesn't sound good. Hard to say without testing it, but kind of sounds like the baseband chip (hardware issue).

I also though of that, hopefully not.
When I first got the phone, my gf sent me our pictures via bluetooth , no issues occured. After a while, I noticed that there are so many photos of the previous owner (around 1000+) and mp3s (around 1000+ also). So I connected the phone via usb to my pc and deleted all those pictures and mp3s inside the My Computer -> SHV-E160S -> Phone (Computer\SHV-E160S\Phone). After doing so, I started to encouter some issues, when enabling the bluetooth, the phone hangs and reboots then the error 'NFC service has stopped' keeps on popping up, until it went Unknown Baseband.
Now, the phone keeps on rebooting similar to the symptoms that it gets when baseband version is unknown.
I'm looking for solutions to fix the unknown baseband and saw the Back up and Restore EFS, I just need to root the device to try this fix. Maybe I'll post an update whether if I manage to solve this problem or not, if it didn't fix the issue then maybe the problem is the baseband chip. what a crap!
This is my reference for the EFS Fix

Thanks!
Rooting will be easy. Just install TWRP with Odin and use the SuperSU zip from Chainfire. Process should take like 5 minutes once everything is downloaded.

So I need to install TWRP first before rooting the device? Also I'm planning to use a rooted stock firmware which is 4.1.2, I just don't know the difference between UH24 and MH2, I've read that UH24 is already old and it's better to use a MH2 build and what is the Recovery UH24/MH2?
EDIT:
I forgot, I cannot check my current Baseband since it is still unknown.
EDIT: 12:30PM +8:00
I managed to get my Build#, it is MH2, I'm currently looking for a rooted 4.1.2 MH2 download link.
Way faster and easier to use the method I outlined, but either way should work.

Sorry, I'm really a root virgin here. While following your advise, I'm also currently looking at this guide -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1924535. I'm done downloading Tegrak for MH2, a small problem I encountered here is I don't have a folder named 'sdcard' in my phone, so I created one and copied the 'Kernel' .zip, also I copied it to usbStorage folder.
I'm about to flash the 'Recovery' .tar to my phone. Hoping a success result
Should be fine. Your phone's internal storage is seen by the OS as /sdcard. Doesn't matter where you put the file as long as you remember where it's at so you can navigate to it through recovery to install.

Oh crap, I didn't thought of that. Installing 'Kernel' .zip now.

Finally! I'm done rooting my phone, though I encountered another issues again. My Menu Button and Back Button does not work.
UPDATE: 4:08PM +8:00GMT
I think I found the problem as to why my Menu button and Back button doesn't work. I'v check my Baseband and it is -> E160SKSJMH1 and my Build # is -> JZO54K.E160SKSJMH2. Am I using a wrong FW as supposed to what I should be using? Which build should I install, the MH1 or the MH2?
Also, the Tegrak Kernel I've used is Build 48 for SHV-E160S MH2. I've also tried factory resetting the phone but the issue still exists.
Thanks!
UPDATE: 4:41PM +8:00GMT
Managed to fixed the issue by updating my Touch Firmware. Cool!
