Replacing battery - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Hi,
could someone confirm, that it is really that easy to replace the battery. Or even better, could someone post some pictures how to do it?
The other thing I am interessted in, is to remove the usb-protection, as it seams to be really annoying to use...
Thanks,
km

You can access it by removing the screws on the back cover (including a few torx screws) and then prising the chassis open.

Interesting, wonder if we will see some higher capacity batteries as I will be willing to open it up and change the standard one

Thanks! Do you know if it is possible to take out the usb cover, because it looks like it will break soon?

You can try to take it out with a tiny screwdriver or something

Anyone want to see the inside of a thunderbolt?

Here is my sad story.....dropped the T-bolt for the first time and the digitizer cracked (had it in a case even). So I ordered a new one from repairs universe and they advertised that it would come with a guide. It did not, but the digitizer arrived quickly. So being an electrical engineer I decided that I could probably do it anyway.
I managed to get it apart and learn the hard way about a few things not to do. I manged to crack the LCD :-( I looked an no one has them :-(
My model used a Sharp lq043y1dx04 according to the sticker.
Anyway, I have figured out how to take the T-Bolt apart and figured that while I wait for a new LCD to become available I could at least share some pictures with the community. Being a new poster though, how would you suggest posting pictures?
***Update - photos are here, let me know if there are any that you would like to see better: s1098.photobucket.com/albums/g378/bscythe/ ***
Finally, I do not recommend anyone try this....you need to remove the LCD in order to replace the digitizer. The LCD is double sticky taped to a metal tray. To get the two apart you must do a lot of prying which can destroy the fragile LCD. If you are going to try it, I'd recommend a 4" wide razor used for scraping windows to insert along side the LCD to use to pry with. Be careful not to cut the ribbons though!
I'm a mechanical/acoustical engineer...
For pics, I would use photobucket...
As for the screen and tray, usually they are one piece, is there any kind of tabs through the board that look like they may hold the tray in?

I found the pictures very interesting. However, you couldn't pay me $250 to try to open one up.

Well, if it makes you feel better, I'm very interested in taking a look. As someone that has had their Galaxy S apart numerous times, anytime I can take a sneak peak I'm all for it!
Very cool. I love tear downs.

Me too!
Thanks for posting, OP.
Well I hope that my misfortune is at least helpful to others at some point since I could not find a teardown to reference before I tried fixing the phone myself.
I was able to get a new one from work (thank goodness for the large number of available upgrades on our account), but still plan to finish fixing this one when the LCDs become available. Putting it back together will be the easy part....I'll take better pictures during the process too.
Did you happen to notice where the cell and wifi antennas are located?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
They are located in the battery cover. If you take it apart you will see the metal tabs on the battery cover that connect to the phone for the antennas.
This is the first phone I have ever purchased insurance for. My nexus one took a few tumbles and survived but I would hate to try to replace this phone at retail price. At least ebay had nexus one pretty available for reasonable prices.
Good luck maybe you can still purchase the insurance through VZ.

Well I dropped mine too and the digitizer is cracked bad. It still works and tape is holding it all in place but I need to get it fixed. I have taken apart laptops and fixed them and am a mr fixit in many departments, so I hope I can do it without cracking the lcd. I ordered the digitizer and am hoping to get some tips from you. Is there any way you put a step by step together that could guide me through this process? I would greatly greatly appreciate it.
I looked at the pics and with the beveled edges of the tray it seems to be very hard to separate the lcd from the tray with a flat blade. Does the LCD have to be detached from the tray? Also, since the bottom part of the case is a molded piece do the internals slide up and out?
Thanks
I'm sure that isn't the only antenna.

4800mAh battery

Is there any good program for properly calibrating this battery? I'm getting it in a couple days, and would like to properly read it, rather than it be stuck at 1% for 10 hours, like I seem to read alot... Also, doesn't it kind of defeat the purpose of the otterbox, to cut it, to fit this, seeing as alot of the otterbox will then be missing?

I have not found a good way to calibrate the battery, if you do- let us know.
Probably does weaken the Otterbox to some extent, as the hard plastic on the back is missing in the middle, but it is still intact along the edges, and of course the corners are covered. You will have to decide if you want to cut it or not. If you wind up using the extended battery most of the time you will probably want it on there...

Replacing USB port on Vibrant

Hola,
My USB port is pooping out on one of my vibrants, and i ordered a new one, took the casing apart, and removed the motherboard, then realized that it is soldered on. SO, today i must pick up what i need, and get as much advice you people are willing to give, becayse i will be attempting this after work. Ive soldered very few things in the past, and they were much bigger than a phone. I have an iron, tho it is a fairly large one, and the guage wire i have is surley too big for this application.
My question is, on the usb port, there is 4 soldering points, and the pins at the bottom seem to just lay on their contact points, is this right?
Is there anything i need to beware of before proceeding?
I dont have anything to clean the existing solder up? Do i need one of those suction things?
What size guage wire and iron will i need?
Thanks for any help in advance!
Sent from my SGH-T959 using Tapatalk
You're going to want to make sure the foils did not stay on the motherboard. If you see any residue on the board, the new port won't get a connection.

I would maybe watch some YouTube vids and see what they do. Mobiletechvideos has one I believe. I am probably going to have to do the same thing on one of my Vibes so, I'll be following this.
I would think that you need a smaller iron with a sharper point, some flux, some patience and calm hands. Maybe some alcohol to calm you down and also to make sure the MB is cleaned completely before putting the new one on.

The power button that sticks to the side plastice piece on the motherboard was only "glued" on, do i need to buy some sort of glue to put it back in place, or does that sticky stuff never dry up?

You should be OK without any new goo. Just don't leave it laying around for two weeks before putting it back on. I swapped motherboards on my phone (ironically because of a bad USB port on my original phone), and didn't have any problems with the power button not sticking back on.
Also, from what you said in your original post, it seems you think that the port's pins just lay on the board. That is not correct, they actually need to be soldered on which is no small feat (no pun intended) due to how small and delicate they are. If you do not have a lot of experience soldering you will likely damage the port and possibly the board. I'm not trying to dissuade you from doing this if you think you're up for it, but it does take some skill. As a side note the guys at mobiltechvideos offer a repair service for $35 which seems reasonable to me.
By the way, where did you guys get the replacement port?

[Q] Replaced ear speaker now top half of screen has lines and hard to view

My ear speaker went out and cash short (to buy a phone full price to maintain VZ unlimited) so replaced it myself for $5. Now the screen has banding of lines on the top half and is fuzzy like half of the pixels are not working. I suspected the ribbon cable for the screen came loose so seated it firmly (didn't remove it to repair the speaker) but no luck.
Is this damage from perhaps twisting the screen in the process to get the frame off of it or typical ribbon cable issue?
Thanks for the help!

Sounds to me like the damage was caused either when you twisted the screen to get the frame off or maybe something didn't get fully tightened back down and is applying some pressure into the back of the LCD... causing this to happen.
I doubt it would be a ribbon cable issue.

Thanks RB. I think then I did it taking it apart the frame was hell to get off.
Not sure what to do not a good time to get a new screen. Maybe I can get a follower who moved on to new phone to send their old bolt along for parts.
Cheers,

Hope you get it figured out man.
Those LCDs aren't cheap for this phone.
I use an exacto knife and heat to separate adhesives, but I know not everyone has an exacto knife. Just for future reference, you can pick them up pretty much anywhere in the art section for only a few bucks. I highly recommend them when replacing parts.
Good luck finding another LCD.

Either that or buy a screen with the toolkit. I watched videos of the people with the toolkit and it helps tremendously. Plus, it's made of plastic so there is less of a chance to mess the new one up when you install it.

Picture of inside phone ATT model

The battery cover literally just pops off, just need to get something thin started into it.
Just thought it would be nice to see the guts. For science and all hehe.
Seriously tho, wonder if it would be possible to use the Korean quick window cover that replaces the whole back?

I'm really pleased to see that the battery will be easily replaced if 1 year from now, it starts failing to hold a significant charge.
Hmm I wonder if we can mod a wireless charging receiver on it... Is the Verizon version easy to pop off? If so where does the coils for the wireless charging connect?

I can't imagine that it would be too difficult, depending on how tight the back cover fit is.

yeah, if we find the connectors it connects to we can use one of the many QI pads to mod to the back door or get the verizon replacement back door and remove the coil

I mean yes the battery is "stepped" but not as much as they make you believe in the g2 launch event haha.
Good to know it is serviceable however! How much if any spare room is there under that cover?
Is that a micro SD card there in steel or aluminum
It's a long shot but it'll be lovely to have micro SD support. Have seem this in happen in other phone for ex on Dell streak the internal memory was just a micro sd card which could be replaced.
Thoughts?

I don't think it is active, IF they put it in there that is where it would go.
Any verizon people willing to pop off their backs to show us which connectors are for wireless charging? I would LOVE to mod something together to get wireless charging to anyone who wants it

If this article is correct, then the Korean LG G2 is 0.24mm thicker than the US one, at 9.14mm vs 8.9mm. So it may actually be a little too big... so maybe it'll fit with some extra room... for extra tape
That being said, I'm sold on the LG G2 thanks to your post. A removable case means we might get extended batteries, battery replacements, and I can make custom flush cases.
Some more pictures of the AT&T LG G2 with the plastic cover removed!
wireless charging isn't happening with the LG G2 for AT&T.
board design is very different on the Verizon model.

Thanks for the higher resolution pics!
I think its really funny how they make the "Stepped Battery" look at the product launch, like it was going to fill every spare mm in the phone then to see that its not that dramatic at all.
I read a lot of people are complaining about the heat coming from the phone around the camera area. I wonder if some thermal pads or tape can be used in that area?

Maybe we can take an old school approach, meaning we open up the bottom and solder wires onto the micro usb jack. the old samsung galaxy's had that mod where they took a palm loop and soldered wires and made it so that the contacts on the palm loop made contact with the micro usb jack pins.
as soon as i get my hands on a Sprint variant im going to open it up and try this (with protection of all kinds since i dont want to kill my phone).
based on manuals i found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2437403 the mod seems possible, but i dont know if it'll work.
the cover of the bottom comes off without too much work. the disassembly of sprint starts on p.254
and since the NFC is build into the Battery Cover, i dont think it will interfere with each other.
Can we use copper tape? I put in a wireless Palm setup into my Note 2 and that's exactly what I used, copper tape to run leads from the coil to the battery leads. Worked perfectly. If the qi coil fits in there, couldn't we just simply run copper tape nice and flat to the battery leads?

that might work but im not sure as to the effects on the battery long term. the Micro usb leads are a better shoice snce LG sigures out how to properly charge the battery. these batteries (SiO+) might be diffrent and cant be regularly charged. i feel Micro USB modding with copper foil and some wire is the best option. and the coil can go right on top of the battery
