[Q] Sim unlock and custom roms - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I will be moving out of the country for a little while and was wondering if anyone could help me out with unlocking my vibrant. (see sig for current set up)
I have attempted using several market utilities but have had no luck, i havent yet called T-mobile because im fairly certain that the unlock code with custom roms installed wont work (correct me if im wrong this is just an assumption im making)
Does any one know of a way to sim unlock the vibrant while on custom roms?
Do i have to use a hex editor?
If i flash back to stock, use sim unlock provided by t-mobile, will the unlock persist after flashing a custom rom?
Thank you in advance to those who reply.
- Cheers

Unlocking has nothing to do with having a custom rom or not.
1. Easiest way is to call T-Mobile for unlock code
2. Quickest way is to follow these directions:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=761045
3. Yes you will need a hex editor and be able to use adb.
Once unlocked it will stay unlocked after flashing custom roms.
I was just in an area without decent T-mobile coverage and had to unlock to use a AT&T GoPhone sim. Did #2 from above. 10 minutes max.

[Q] Unlocked Vibrant flashing

Hello,
I currently have a Unlocked stock vibrant that I am using with an ATT SIM. I would like to start experimenting with different ROMS/Kernels and was wondering if I will need to "Unlock" my phone every time I flash a new ROM or kernel.
In which scenarios will I need to redo the unlock process and in which will I not?
Thanks.
Yes, You need to unlock it each time. Keep the code.

[Q] Will root prevent sim unlock code?

This might be a stupid question but I want to ask anyway. I just bought a T-Mobile Note 2 (I searched that specific forum for answers as well) and am awaiting a sim unlock code from T-Mobile. (I know I can downgrade to 4.1.1 and unlock it via the hidden call menu but at this time I am not opting to do that). I flashed the 4.1.2 Root Injected Stock Rom. My question is, (which maybe I should have asked before hand) Will I be able to use the sim unlock code that T-Mobile provides me with despite being on the root injected 4.1.2 stock rom? Thanks!

Root will not prevent you from unlocking your SIM with the unlock code. Rooting your device and having root access is different then SIM unlocking your device. Overall, you should be all set once your SIM unlock code comes to carrier unlock your device.

Rooted & unlocked question

I'm selling my Sprint Note 3 that I had rooted before the lollipop upgrade. Since then I put a lollipop rom on it.
Two stupid noobie questions that I couldn't find answers to when I searched ..
1. Since I'm rooted am I also unlocked ... can he use an att Sim card and use it on att?
2. Do I need a specific rom that would make this possible ... or is there a way to test it to prove to him that it works?
Thanks for the answers.
Just FYI... There's a difference between unlocked carrier and unlocked boot loader.
You do not need a custom ROM to use another Sim card, but you need to unlock the carrier on the phone

Is there a way to tell if I did a carrier unlock? I don't really even remember what method I used to root it.
You unlock the boot loader to flash a custom rom?
To sim unlock you would have had to run SSU.app or GT.app to international unlock then odined a older radio mj4 or mi3. Then change the APNs to match the carrier's settings for internet and mms messages.
I called sprint and got the master unlock codes ... is there an easy way to unlock it now that I have those?

I don't really know the answer to this question because I've never used GSM or had to deal with SIM-related stuff, so this might be a dumb question, but does it just require an unlock code? Is this the same code that you can view in the "About Phone" menu in the options? The one that's called UICC unlock or something? Check out this thread here...
Is it already locked with a PIN right now? I don't even know if locked SIMs persist across factory resets, but if they do I would check online to see if that's all you need, or how it works. Maybe a Google search with something like UICC unlock SIM GSM LG G3 Sprint factory reset, for example. Sorry if I'm already telling you stuff you know.

Question Unlocked vs T-Mobile version questions.

I currently have both the T-Mobile version and I purchased an unlocked version from BestBuy.
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/oneplus-nord-n200-5g-blue-quantum-64gb-unlocked-blue-quantum/6468089.p?skuId=6468089
Are there physical differences to these two phones or are they just running different software?
EDIT I looks like its not possible to unlock the bootloader of the T-Mobile version just yet and I have been doing some searching and it looks like the unlocked version is closer to being unlocked. If anyone can confirm a way to bootloader unlock either I would appreciate it.
My end goal here is to get access to Unlocked/Uncapped tethering without having to use a 3rdparty app or companion app. The ability to flash custom ROMs and root access. But also the ability to flash back to a 100% stock rom.
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.
EDIT I see now you can get the bootloader unlocked on both version by sending a token to Oneplus and waiting 7 days.

The only physical difference is that the T-Mobile version has the IMEI engraved onto the back of the phone while the unlocked variant does not and the original boxes are slightly different.
Both phones run different software. It is possible to flash the unlocked ROM to the T-Mobile version of the phone after unlocking the bootloader, but that breaks OTA.

You may find this useful with the T-Mobile variant: CLICK HERE
All the info you need to get your bootloader unlocked for the T-Mobile variant.
There's even a single adb command that will ungrey the OEM unlock option in the developer settings without a SIM unlock (you'll still need the unlock token from OP though):
The Quest for a Bootloader Unlock (partial guide, T-Mobile variant, may work for MetroPCS/Metro variant)
OK, this process has been hell, but I'm gonna try and consolidate everything I've worked out so far in one place. This all applies only to the T-Mobile variant (ie. it comes preloaded with all the T-Mobile bloatware) of the N200 on the T-Mobile...

does unlocked version has dual sim capability and dual sim tray??
I'm trying to do the same thing with the N200 for a hostpot @xVoidx . I'm curious if you succeeded, and what ROM did you end up using to do it?
