Galaxy Note Ice Cream Sandwich Update - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Be depressed.
"(SEOUL--Korea Newswire) March 22, 2012 -- Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, today announced it will be offering a Premium Suite upgrade for GALAXY Note users worldwide from Q2. It includes extra multimedia features and a range of new S Pen optimized applications in addition to an OS upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
The Premium Suite offers new features and applications exclusive to GALAXY Note and its innovative S Pen, which was introduced with GALAXY Note 10.1 in Mobile World Congress 2012 last month. This includes S Note, a unique tool that lets you combine your notes or sketches with other digital content, giving you a new way to create your own stories. S Note comes in various ready-to-use templates for a range of tasks including meeting minutes, diary and others.
S Note also includes the innovative Shape Match and Formula Match applications that help correct and digitize geometric shapes and even solve numeric formulas hand-drawn with S Pen, increasing your on-the-go efficiency and productivity. You can draw tables and grids which are instantly digitized, saving time and effort. Moreover, by using the S Note’s integrated knowledge search engines, users can quickly search, and obtain information.
For a touch of self-expression, the Premium Suite also includes My Story, another S Pen optimized application that allows you to create personalized digital cards for friends or family using any type of content including notes, video content, photos, text or voice.
In celebration of the Premium Suite upgrade announcement, Samsung will provide special offers to all GALAXY users as an official launch partner of Angry Birds Space, a new blockbuster mobile game. For all Samsung GALAXY users, an exclusive GALAXY Note level will be provided for extra fun. Moreover, a special package of 30 challenging levels – ‘Danger Zone’ – will be available for free if unpacked within the three-month period.
“GALAXY Note continues to delight customers all over the world with its incredible versatility and unique user experience. With the Premium Suite upgrade, we wanted to add features that enrich users’ Note experience even more, including the great advantages of Android 4.0 and innovative applications for S Pen,” said JK Shin, President of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics. “We are committed to providing extraordinary experiences for consumers, and we will continue to provide new features and upgrades to enrich our offering.”
The Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade brings an entirely new look and feel to Android on GALAXY Note, with a more intuitive user interface that includes a redesigned App menu for easier multi-tasking. The upgrade also introduces innovations such as Face Unlock, Snapshot, and others.
The availability and scheduling of the software upgrade will vary by market and wireless carriers’ requirements.

So, that tells me I should be happy. It may be when hell freezes over that AT&T Notes will get it, but at least some time ICS will arrive.

As a fellow AT&T employee, I agree with what you said. I mean, the Captivate just got the Gingerbread update a few months ago! Fingers crossed for the Devs out there....

you guys that are so negative to this announce sound like you rather get no information coming out from samsung at all about ICS update than when they tell you at least when you can start expecting.... XD

The time ics arrives, this forum is going to be flooded with "should I get the Galaxy S3"
I know my international Note will see ics before my att version does. I don't mind but the lack of devs is not promising. You have 2 devs working on roms and one has been MIA for a while.Oh well... but mad props to DAGr8, and hope tpc is ok.

It comes from experience. The Captivate got Gingerbread MORE THAN A YEAR after Samsung announced it would be available within a few months (GB was announced last summer that it would soon be available for the Cappy, here we are nearly a year AFTER that announcement).
Folks, realistically, we are looking at Christmas at the earliest for anything official for the ATT Note. The release schedule generally is that the US market is the second to last to have the OS released and this is to the carrier, NOT to the users (this is how Samsung does it, not all phone manufacturers work this way). So once Samsung 'gets around' to releasing to the carrier (again, nearly every market will have it before it is given to ATT), ATT will have to test / tweak / add whatever they want to put in.
HOWEVER, as of Monday, Samsung released the source for the Korean models of the Note. It will need alot of work before it is ready for the ATT Note BUT it is a huge step in the right direction and gives devs a base to start cooking up some REAL roms. Unfortunately, devs cant just build and compile it and stick it in the ATT Note but it can be modified and tweaked to do so AND gives a head start that allows devs to port over the improvements to the inevitable release of the ATT Note source code.

koren note is same as att note.just gone need a modem bin for usa

If you really are an AT&T employee and purchased the Note hoping that you would get an official release of ICS in the year 2012 then you obviously havent worked for AT&T for long.
---------- Post added at 09:02 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:00 AM ----------
Seriously people, if you wanted ICS then you should have bought an unlocked nexus.
The track record for new android releases from the manufacturer and official releases from AT&T have always been mired with delays and issues. And people want to act surprised when its going to take longer than a few months for the Note to get ICS?

At AT&T today...heard something interesting.

I went to at&T today to pick up a new sim card for my lady and the flip cover case for my note (which i can't decide if i like or not) and was talking to the rep about my note.
I mentioned that the only thing i didn't like about the note was the lack of accuracy of.the s-pen. He told me that they are planning on rolling out an update to this and through note tablet that will address that issue and will increase.its sensitivity and accuracy.
Throw that in with the mention of the "Galactic upgrade Premium Suite coming soon" mention at the end of the new Angry Birds Space for the note game trailer and i think its accurate. According to what i saw it is coming 3/25.
I think that means ICS is pretty far out with this simple.update coming at the end of the month. Makes me frown...
At least they are doing something about the s-pen i guess.

Why, from a business standpoint, should AT&T bother upgrading a phone that has already been released?
In the past, the only real reason for an upgrade would be to fix something that was broken, or add something that was missed. Gingerbread isn't broken, ICS doesn't add anything, therefore there is no real need for an upgrade.
Unfortunately, for us, this means that any ICS that comes along in forms of ROMs will have to be hacked in (for features like Hardware Acceleration) since we can't really write for the specific hardware.
I'm actually cool with GB myself. It was a long time coming and ICS just didn't have that big of an impact on me. I just wish that TouchWiz was better geared for my finger in this phone instead of the s-pen.
Well i never said that i thought the date would stand.
I just found it very interesting that he would say that and then i would read that.
Samsung knows they have a decent following and most of them are drooling for ICS. So does att. From a marketing and customer relations standpoint they know they would take a hit without an ICS update. The question is just when.
An update to the note around the release of the note tab makes sense. Similar hardware between them and if they were able to update the accuracy on the tab they could easily port that to the phone. Probably include some new bloatware from recently developed apps designed for the note. Call it a "Premier Suite" to get people interested.

Thanks for sharing what you heard. Whatever it is that is on the way sure can't be a bad thing. None of us knows what it is, but we all hope that ICS will be here sooner than later. I don't think Samsung would have teased this news with Angry Birds unless it was somewhat significant, at least. I actually think it is some of the software that they have been teasing on their website, i.e. Whiteboard.
The angry birds tease is an international note as I recall. I bet my right nut we won't see ics before October. Don't get ur hopes to high guys n be disappointed, just enjoy and be happy we have a awesome piece of hardware!
Enjoy the note now as the Galaxy Note S or Note II will come with JellyBean. Take this with a pound of salt.

Ive seen several reports that rank ATT higher then Sprint and Verizon. I dont understand why everyone bashes on ATT. Every Wireless company is evil in my opinion, not just ATT. I found ATT's customer service to be rather pleasant compared to Verizon and Tmobile. (I despise sprint so i havent worked w/ their customer service).

Anyone sure about this, or just the usual AT&T hatred?
Just curious, because I did my homework prior to purchasing this unit and from what I could tell it would be upgraded to ICS relatively quickly. I heard March quoted quite a few times, but I wasn't really expecting it until Summer. But Samsung is really trying to compete with Apple these days, and they're doing a good job. They know one of their weak spots was their lack of support for existing products, maybe I'm naive, but I would like to think that with the competition in mind, and considering It's not drastically difficult, that they would want to get that update out to us relatively quickly.
Either way I don't think it makes that huge of a difference.
I see it as a simple problem to solve. We will all have to band together to pay a dev to take a quality ICS package (and thats official, not leaked) and graft it over to the ATT version. There are numerous talented devs here that can pull it off, especially with "donations"
I doubt we will ever see ICS on the original att note, perhaps the Note 2 when ever that comes out.

It's not an opinion.. is the AT&T SGSII getting ICS in March like the international version? No. It is pretty obvious which version Samsung is talking about.. Carrier testing takes longer than three weeks which is how long the AT&T Note has been out for.
The special little party is probably about S-Pen SDK 2.0 which was just released.

In prior history has the carrier branded and international version EVER gotten a major software upgrade at the same time? NO! International always gets it well before a carrier phone. Just the nature of the beast. I'm telling u guys, no ics for at&t note till atleast October! It is what it is! No big deal!
I Just upgraded to to the Note 3 days ago. I was going to switch carrier but then this beast came out so now iam stuck with At&t for another 2 years.. (yikes) i still have the LG thrill with me which was supposed to be upgraded to GB Oct 2011???? It is now Match 2012 and its still running Froyo. At&t are full of promises if the Note gets ICS fine but if note iam ok with GB on this thing..I can always install ROMS later

Galaxy Player 4.2 coming to the USA

http://www.slashgear.com/samsung-galaxy-player-4-2-ready-for-the-usa-11222549/
Galaxy Player 4.2 is coming to USA very soon; May 15th I believe.
In a reveal that comes alongside the just-released Samsung Galaxy Player 3.6, here comes the Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 with no monthly data fees, Gingerbread, and connections galore to the other devices you’ve got on hand. This device comes to the USA with a lovely low $199.99 price tag – this compared to the full price of the rest of the Galaxy S devices comparable to this one (complete with mobile data and monthly fees) being downright reasonable. What you’ve got here is Samsung’s baby running an experience relatively close to what we’ve seen on Galaxy S II devices for software, Galaxy S devices for hardware, and more Bluetooth functionality than you’ll be able to handle.

$199.99 sounds like a reasonable pricing.
I wonder what the specs are. Are they going to give it dual core like the new Galaxy Player 70 plus has? I hope they provide more internal memory this time.
Does this also mean we will being seeing a Galaxy Player 5.2 to the USA also since the GP70 Plus is for Korea only.
I'm in the market for a PMP but depending what spec the SGS3 is, I might or might not need to buy a seperate PMP.

I agree. The specs are almost no different at all other than the small screen size change. All samsung is doing is screwing up development for these devices. Just when the 5.0 and 4.0 were getting some developing going, samsung comes in with a 3.6 and a 4.2, which give more options to buyers, and less chance for more devs for our devices

If anything the GS3 would be using the S4 snapdragon which is the MSM8960 paired with the adreno 225, unlike the Note which uses the S3 snapdragon MSM8660 (IIRC) paired with the adreno 220. So not exactly the same chips...

Officially? No. Unofficially? Yes.
This is Samsung's way to get people to purchase new phones. In other countries outside the US, 2 year contracts dont exist which frees customers to upgrade phones as often as they wish. Releasing new features for new phones keeps people buying the newest Samsung phones. Here in the states, its a different story.
FOR THE MOST PART, this is one of the few areas where Apple has done it right, firmware updates are generally speaking fast and frequent giving new features and functionality nearly every month or two. Yes, there are exceptions (most recently, Siri) but Apples' business model is based on the US cell model.
HOWEVER, this doesnt mean these features wont be ported by the community, just as Siri is now available unofficially for just about all Apple ipads, iphones and itouches.
Of course, this is my opinion, all speculation.
I wondered the same thing as the OP. And I agree with littlewierdo. I think it may be possible for these new features, which are mostly software, to be ported over to the Note. Only time will tell.
Much later From Devs not Samsung
I doubt Samsung will ever port any of the new software features over from the SGS3 they just sent out ICS and premium suite to the carriers I think thats all the software upgrades we'll see from Samsung to our phones. But I do think we have some really great Devs on here that will port some of the SGS3's software features to our devices in Mods or Roms. As to when this will happen I'd guess not til late fall 2012 after the SGS3 source code is out and the Devs have had enough time to figure out and write those features for our device. Id really like to know where the notion that Samsung has sent ICS to carriers came from. To my knowledge, there has been nothing officially stated that I know of except that Samsung stated Notes would BEGIN seeing ICS in Q2 of this year, but ICS will likely roll out STARTING in Korea and move to different regions over time, as has been the case with EVERY roll out Samsung has done. The Captivate didnt see Gingerbread until nearly a year AFTER it started rolling out in Korea.
I could very well be wrong here but based on Samsung's track record for releases and the fact that there has not been anything official that I know of besides a vague statement by Samsung about a Q2 update, I dont see anything happening. It might feel like something is coming but we dont even have a ready for prime time leak yet...

Officially?
Of course, this is my opinion, all speculation.

you are right.. Koreans are very trendy people. My cousin and his friends change phone every 6 months or so.
There is that "official" update link that Samsung mobile usa on twitter keeps referring people to, but that only shows one device with official update as of now.
As far as the OP question, it is very likely that we will see someone port these over since most of the new software uses the same base hardware (i.e. NFC in conjunction with wifi direct, or front facing camera for eye tracking, etc). I realize that the cameras may be different or the exact model of the NFC chipset or other hardware may differ, but it is software and can be changed to utilize our device specific hardware. Since these new programs were built on existing technology(that the note shares) it is highly likely to eventually see these incorporated.
It will take talent and time, but it is very likely that in later stages of development we will see potential unlocked... Or unwrapped, lol

I'm sure someone will be able to port it at some point, but I wouldn't count on it happening anytime soon, and probably not even this year. I'm not basing this on a ton of information, but I've been following the Note forum for awhile since I decided to hold out for the S3 and as far as I know there still isn't a great leak without bugs for ICS, which was pretty much "guaranteed" by all the forum members as soon as the Note released in the US.
I could be wrong, but that's just what I've seen.

Well once the full official update comes out, we will be golden. Would be nice if CM9 supported our phone and not just the international.

They said Q2 My guess is somewhere in June I hope it's very soon......
Likely not S-voice, as they are likely going to try to make that an SIII selling point. The international version of the note already has ICS, so, All of the apps that came in the ICS update will likely be the same for the i717.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/23/ice-cream-sandwich-att_n_1375412.html
AT&T today announced the availability of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) for HTC Vivid™ customers. After installing the software update, customers can now enjoy the optimized audio experience of Beats by Dr. Dre Audio™ and new and improved HTC Sense™ experience. Information about these features and more can be found at http://www.att.com/vividupdate. HTC Vivid™ will be the first U.S. smartphone to receive Ice Cream Sandwich as an update and the first to be issued by a wireless carrier. It will be followed by several other AT&T devices in the coming months:
LG Nitro
Motorola ATRIX 2
Motorola ATRIX 4G
Pantech Burst
Pantech Element
Samsung Captivate Glide
Samsung Galaxy Note
Samsung Galaxy S II
Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket
Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9
4. A AT&T Galaxy Note was seen on the CTIA trade show floor running a build of ICS.
5. The leaks suggest its near final.
So it's coming soon...and while were only committed to a vague "Q2" release....that doesn't include carrier approval. Without some additional information, we can't know if it's being tested already by ATT or if the update is still in Samsung's Lab. Nor can we tell how long it takes to go from final, then through the labs, then to us, but some higher ups have suggested 2-4 weeks. If we put all of this together, it points to a end of q2, extremely early in q3 release.

I you look at the build number in the video you can see thats the first ICS leak that was made available for the I717 and it means nothing. The build had been leaked for a couple weeks before this video was even posted. Also if you notice the Note in the video has nothing on it keeping it secure so people cannot steal it which tell me its somebodys device and not an AT&T display. Also AT&T has never said when the update will come. There were rumors it was coming two weeks after The I717 was released and after that didn't come true then the rumor was it would be released by the end of Q1 and when that also failed to be true the rumor switched to early Q2 now the rumor is by the end of Q2 and if that also fails to be true there will be more rumors about Q3. AT&T use to post estimates for updates on windows mobile phones but it was hell waitin cause the dates would always change for every device. I remember having the Samsung Epix and them pushing the dates back three months on two seperate occasions which made everyone have to wait 6 months before it was finally released. I do think it will be released soon but its really just a rumor and knowin how AT&T used to put update dates on their site I am not gonna trust any date or month posted on another site. If they wanted us to know they would post it on ATT.COM and not pass the info for someone else to post. They will release it when they are ready to and if they wanna let us in on the date believe me they will post it on their site first. There are way to many rumors about cell phones that we all know in the end turn out to be false from "confirmed" pics of the next iphone to "confirmed" dates of the cell phone you cannot wait to get your hands on. Take the HTC Vivid which was "confirmed" to be the HTC Holiday and all the rumors that surrounded it like two rear cams, 1.8GHz, rumored release dates that spanned at least 8 month. Come on guys were better than this. Can't you just wait? You see rumors everyday and you should know better than to believe everything you read
They would have to re-code the video editor to work with our chips.

[Q&A]Why samsung no provide themes service on our global note 4 but china has?

maybe we can sent email to " [email protected] " for report what we need?
TQ all and forum xda...
install a custom rom and enjoy theme store and other note 5 abiliities
Why should I install a custom firmware for something I have paid more than $500? I think that Samsung could and should have to respect our commitment to their products because I do not have only a Samsung phone, I have also and TV and Blu-ray. If I wanted to install custom firmware I would have bought a cheaper device.

Stupid sales policy, What else could it possibly be!
Samsung wants people to buy the S7, S6+, S6, Note 5 and other newer phones by attracting customers towards these gimmicky features. So if they would roll out updates including these features to phones that are a generation behind then the sales of newer phones would go down. Since, people would tend to go for cheaper "last-gen" flagships as they would still be better than most of the newer non-flagship devices that have such features!
"JUST SAYING", might be the truth, Samsung knows!
It is wrong policy because it pushes the potential customers toward other brands like HTC and LG that share the new features they have with some older flagships.

Nothing can be done about it afaik because samsung knows no matter what they do, what ****ty policies they have a huge population of people with the money in their pockets are gonna buy their new phones no matter what.
I am sorry to say that but you are right. Though I think they have started to reevaluate their policy uploading their apps on the play store and with the Note 4 I have got 2-3 more OTA updates compared with Note 2 with which I have got only 1 update.

That may happen but only in a very small scale, unfortunately at the end of the day Samsung makes overall better flagships than HTC or LG and they know it. And I have consider both brands, actually I'm waiting on HTC 10 release. But more likely samsung's camera will still be better and I will get the Note 6.

i want to say...themes service is ez thing..no like lock screen writting or alway on screen........

I always felt kinda secure, proud and comfortable with owning Samsung Phones until the release of Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, i mean no card slot, disappointing battery and no water/dust resistance but just some samsung so-called innovative features and gimmicky apps (Ignoring the Specs as its become a trend with all Brands). They wont change their policies neither do they actually care about the customers, all they care about is competing with others in terms of specs and acquiring lots of money by setting launch prices as high as the sky. Later on they decrease prices of older models by 40-50% thus making sure that resale/exchange value is almost negligible. And in regard to themes and other Software features, do you really think they would implement them in older generation phones? I mean, why would they even bother when they already know samsung sales would never go down just because they dont provide software updates which INCLUDE these features!
