Question about return - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Hey guys. I just got my replacement phone from ATT mailed in since my old one's power button broke. I have a few questions about getting it back to stock AND doing so to reset my flash counter ( its at 1 now and i dont want them to void my warranty and make me pay for it :/) As of now, i do not have a jig, but one is one the way.
first off i had planned on flashing 4.0.3 and installing triangle away. i was told that this would get rid of the yellow triangle AND reset the flash counter. Will this work?
Next, does flashing back to stock through odin/heimdall readd to the flash counter where it'd go back to 1? if so, is there a way back to stock and be unrooted without increasing the flash counter
I'm also assuming doing a master clear will not increase it, as i dont want them to send them my data.
I would really appreciate some help. Thanks in advance
UPDATE: The triangle away worked successfully and flashing via odin kept the count at 0 as i thought. My new problem is when i booted up after going back to stock, i get a bootloop at the att logo. Anyone have any alternative links to getting to a nonroot version of samsung stock?

I think someone in another thread said booting into 3e recovery and clearing cache and dalvik will get you sorted.

It would be worth a try... go the the Download Repository and flash the I777UCKH7-CL503881 Stock Binaries package which contains cache.img and hidden.img. It also contains the bootloaders and param but you shouldn't have to worry too much about that. That might allow your phone to boot.

[Q] Need Help! sgs2 stuck

Hello i have an sgs2 from At&t and i was trying to root but was unsuccesful and now i have this message on my screen when i turn it on " Frimware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again". I could use any advice or help. I have search and tried alot of things but no luck. Please thanks.
What method did u use to root?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
And importantly did you attempt the recovery through kies?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
i used the "how to easily root your sgs2" method using odin. I tried to use the recovery through kies but it asks for a code and it wont connect to my phone.
It sounds like your phone is still half functioning. Try booting into recovery,
With the phone off hold down both volume keys and power button until you see the first screen, then let go of the power button.
If it's stock recovery you'll be able to do a factory restore(wipe). If CWM choose wipe data factory reset.
After rebooting it might work.
Worst case you can put it back in download mode and try odin again.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
If you can't get it into download mode you may have serious issues.
Might need to build a usb jig or buy one.
Contemplate a return.
If you tried everything, and I mean everything to get it into download mode, i.e. jig, "adb reboot", then neither can they. Can't see anything you did.

I just tried that but all i get is the firmware error screen. And i would try reflashing through odin but i dont know what to reflash the kernal that i was trying to root or something else??
and i have thought about returning it but i want to eventually root it so i would like to know what im doing wrong or how to fix it. thanks for all the help

You never did tell us what KIES has to do with ROOTING ?
I would definitely flash back to stock. Stock will never further mess it up. Not to mention there is the stock rom that's prerooted. By using that one you won't get a yellow triangle on boot. Nor will the counter go up from changing the kernel.

If he downloaded an international rom then he can't use the stock recovery as the power button on the international roms aren't the select key. They have an actual hardware button to select. I found that out the hard way.

At least you got download mode working. With that working there should be no issue about fixing your phone.
Just keep in mind depending on if "everything flashed from the international version you possibly will also need to flash the right modem.
I wouldn't worry about that until you got the phone up and working.
It's best to keep each step as simple as possible, especially for the first time you're trying it.

ok so i downloaded the stock rooted rom and im using odin 1.85 but it stops at factoryfs.img, any ideas??? thanks again for all the help
Not good. I wish I could offer more help. At least it didn't stop at flashing the bootloaders.
There's not too much you can do at this point. You can try waiting seeing if it changes.
You can hope if you do unplug it that you can get it back into download mode. Then try odin again. Though I'd make sure the checksum of the download matches up to make sure it downloaded properly.
No one wants to be the one to say unplug it in the middle of an odin procedure, but if no progress is being made after a reasonable amount of time, there's not much left to do.

As far as I remember from other threats you have to have "original status" and the flash counter "0". In addition double check if you got any "root" apps on your S3 or sdcard just in case.

Well yeah. I am going to flash the stock rom, reset the counter and reset to factory settings and format everything before sending it back.
But besides that, do I need to do anything else? Is there a chance that the replacement might get refused?

[Q] Unroot i717 help

After extensive research, I have finally given up on looking for my answer.
Please have mercy on my tired soul for having to ask the next question:
Is there a way to unroot your phone without using Odin? My USB Port is damaged.
Thus, I am returning it to ATT warranty to get a new one.
I want to make sure that they won't be able to notice that the phone was rooted.
Stock rom, stock kernely; counter, the whole shibangbang.
Is there a way you can simply flash via CWM or..? Something that doesn't require a USB.
Any sort of direction or advice is much appreciated!
Thank you in advance, even if you don't have a response, thanks for reading.
Stock rom.
http://stockroms.net/file/GalaxyNote/SGH-i717/ICS/I717UCLF6_I717ATTLF6_ATT.zip
Do a little more research but I'm sure this is a step in the right direction.. ask around though cause I'm not 100% positive you can just flash it via recovery but if you can, this is the stock rom for our i717's

They can easily use an external battery to use the phone.
Then they'll see all the amazing mods.
I remember reading somewhere that you can do it with Mobile ODIN Pro from the play store, no PC required. You'll have to drop 5 bucks on it but I imagine that beats $500 on a new Note
Mobile Odin doesn't support the note. But you should double check me in case he made a version for us.
Ah I think you're right. I think what I read was for the international version. My mistake!
In the super everything stickie there was a method to return to stock without a PC. That should work for you.

Brother let me tell you what u have to do, either way if Ur usb port is screwed u have to keep Ur cell I'll tell ya why. First you are rooted. Second you probably flashed another rom. Third your flash counter. Why not buy a USB port and attempt the fix your self or take it to a repair shop near by u? The fix is cheap.
This happened to me my USB port was shorted and if u move the cable at a right position it would or wouldn't charge or USB to PC. Got lucky enough to flash, reset counter, and also flash recovery stock via adb. Shipped the phone next morning to att since I already received my replacement phone(which glass screen lens is cracked now) will fix it waiting for parts

I have an AT&T repair center in town here. I called AT&T for my issue, got them to say "yea ok we'll do a warranty on it" so I took the time to unroot it, return to stock reset the flash counter and after I waited for 15 minutes while the guy showed a blond how to load pictures onto her iphone he took a quick look at my phone, checked the notes on my account and handed me a refurb. he didn't boot it, didn't look at flash counter, nadda. so take it as you will. I would however flash a stock rom and remove your custom recovery but I'm not sure about dealing with the counter.
Download SUPER USER PRO from the google play and iinstall (course)on settings you should have the option to FULL UNROOT there see pictures!!!!!

You might give some more info on what all you did or what file you were trying to flash....
Sounds like the problem of Gingerbread root on ICS system, or vice-versa. Just redo your work, ensuring you use the appropriate file for your system.
By the way, NEVER tweak your system until you learn to move important stuff to your external sd card or pc.

Really? I think the best advice was rangercaptain's advice followed by crixley. OP was using odin which means he was trying to install a rooted kernel most likely from a different android version or he was installing CWM. So I highly doubt he has CWM installed and functioning. So how is he going to boot into CWM??
Well I guess I thought he followed the proper instructions and installed cwm first. I admittedly skimmed most of the posts.

[Q] Question about getting my Note 2 back to where it was once it is back from Sammy

Hey guys, I sent my Note 2 into Samsung in Texas to repair it since the wifi was not connecting. Prior to sending it in, I had it rooted and unlocked based on the instructions on this site, but I put it back to stock (using those same directions) to limit the chance that sammy would screw me on my warranty.
I checked the status of my repairs today and it says they replaced the mainboard, so now I am wondering what I will have to do to get it back to its rooted and unlocked state the way it was before sending in. I am guessing that all I will have to do is boot into recovery and flash a rom, but maybe the stock process did more than that.
If anyone could walk me through the steps it takes to get from where it is to where it was, that would be great. Again, it was rooted and unlocked, then I used Odin to go back to stock (which I think means rooted stock, so simply the stock software while still being rooted and unlocked), and now I want to send it back to rooted/unlocked. Also, remember that the mainboard was replaced, and I am not sure if that matters to the whole process.
Thanks!
Head in over to the development section and check out Adam Outlers thread. Very detailed and great way to root and unlock.

But do I need to reroot it? I guess I assumed that putting it back to stock meant rooted/unlocked stock, or stock software. No big deal, I can just reroot/unlock it like I did the first time, but I assumed it was something different.
I'd use triangle away too. I did that before sending it to vzw. Oddly, my counter was at 0

No it's not. Triangle away is an app that resets your flash counter to 0. You needed to use it before using odin to stock so it's to late right now.
To get back to where you were you will need to repeat the unlock process by Adam. When you used odin you unrooted and relocked your phone. Think of it being just like the day you got it now.

To get back to where you were you will need to repeat the unlock process by Adam. When you used odin you unrooted and relocked your phone. Think of it being just like the day you got it now.

You sure about this? I thought the only way TriangleAway works is if you flash back stock ROM/kernel. I never used it before and my flash counter was at 0.
Anyways, also I would reset factory defaults if your firmware shows Modified, as well.
There was something on the lock/unlock thread about going back to stock and keeping the phone unlocked. It said if you were using the ota that made the phone so hard to unlock that you should flash a different tar file (an alternate one) to stay unlocked. I will track it down and post it here, but it made it seem like it would keep the phone unlocked.

Yes I'm sure. The bootloader had to be unlocked for triangle away to work (see screen shot from triangle away OP). So when he uses odin and re locks it's to late. Also, flashing stock firmware doesn't trip the flash counter.

There is an "alternate restore" file that does not flash a boot loader. If that's what you flashed then your boot loader is still unlocked. In the op you didn't specify you just said you restored to stock which would suggest full stock with a lock bootloader.

I did flash the alternate file, sorry for not specifying. The directions were pretty clear that I had to do the alternate file. Anyways, assuming I did that, do I just have to reroot or just flash a rom?

Im not sure if it's rooted already or not. If it is then install a recovery and flash a ROM. If not then reroot with root 66 odin install a recovery and flash

My solution
OK, so I got the phone back and ran into a few hiccups but got it worked out.
Basically I got the phone and re-rooted it and when I tried to install a new recovery I got an error telling me that I am using bad software and I should take the phone to VZW (yeah right).
I then hopped back on ODIN and went back to stock, same way I did before sending it in to Sammy. Once I did that, I went back to the thread about rooting/unlocking and found that there was an update since I last visited. Now, there was a one click method so I decided to give that a shot. I plugged her in, had some issues with drivers but got it worked out, then ran the process. Once it was finished, all was well.
I am not sure if the phone was still rooted/unlocked or not, but either way the one click method appeared to straighten it out.
