[Q] why does my rezound get so hot when running ics roms. - HTC Rezound

Why does my rezound get so hot when running ics roms. My phone stays at like 115 degrees with screen off.

NO, i checked everything

i would try to lock the bootloader, flash the stock RUU, unlock bootloader again, flask recovery, and then install the ics rom again.
remember, when flashing the stock isc RUU (PH98IMG) there is two parts to the installation. it will say everything is upgrading and then REBOOT back into bootloader. press power and then the phone with check for the PH98IMG again and begin the second part of the installation

Aready tried it. I am on the leaked firmware.

It seems that most of the issues with ICS and battery/heat issues seem to stem from apps that don't get along with and aren't optimized for ICS. I run very few apps and have seen normal temps and increased battery life with the new leak firmware. I would try uninstalling apps until I find the one that is causing the problem. That's about all I have on this issue. Hope it helps.

Had the same problem, return the phone. It shouldn't be doing that. New phone, zero problems.

This my replacement one i return my other because the temp reached like 145 degrees.

Mines running ICS, is overclocked to 1.78Ghz, and I've just spent an hour browsing the web on it.... temperature is reported at 96.7F and its barely warm to the touch.

Keep returning. Some people have gone through 2-3 before they got a good one. I lucked out with my first replacement.

What are you guys using to get the temperature of your phones? Is it an app?

On ICS currently, most every ROM comes with stock kernels with no OC afaik. The only OC kernel compatible with ICS ROMs and currently available is SebastianFM's kernel. You can flash that after installing the ROM.

Anyone else get an OTA yesterday ?
Just wondering what it did.
I cant see anything different.

It's been out for a while now the only difference I noticed is that my phone doesn't overheat anymore

Hell no you can root after installing the update or downgrade back. You only have to worry if an update upgrades your hboot, then you might have a problem.

I wouldn't think it would do anything with the hboot since most of us have an unlocked bootloader. Even if it does re-lock the bootloader then we can always unlock it again.
Its an old update and this update I noticed that my phone isn't overheating anymore.

I installed this update the day I got my phone so I don't really have a before and after comparison, but my phone still gets much hotter than I'd like.
The phone (as reported by battery indicator) idles at 4.2 volts at 28ish celcius. If I actually use it (using the browser, playing angry birds, really anything where the screen stays on), it heats up to maybe 42c and voltage drops to about 3.8. I don't have a graph to tell me what the actual temp/voltage is when I'm playing a game or whatever though, that's just what I see immediately after exiting an app that heats up the phone. Seems kind of backwards that it would idle at what's seemingly it's maximum voltage though but I don't know anything about phones. Also, keeping the screen on at low voltage seems to eat up about as much battery as being on a phone call.
What kind of temps are you guys seeing?

The ROM number is the same as the ROM Xboarder has been using for his ROM's.
So unless there are some patches (or a different radio, kernel, or something), I would not expect any difference in performance unless you were on a different one.
Maybe give all the software component numbers to see if any of them are new with this OTA.

Has anyone lost the ability to WiFi tether with the update to .6? Also I'm reading that I will have to re-root?
I have a Telus Amaze and just checked the software info. I am on 1.41.661.3. I have no idea what the difference is. I CAN tell you that I have had no overheating at all and that with my regular use (which is typically light to moderate) I am getting 34ish hours on a charge. I am unrooted and have received no updates from Telus.
Just after writing this post I checked and am currently at 37 hours with 27% battery left.

Back on GB Ruu & Still burning batteries

I'm S-Off and RUU'd back to GB because the new firmware/radios had me down about battery life. Before the leak, I used to get ~10hrs total battery time with normal usage on stock battery. Once I went to ICS Leak, that was down around 6 so I figured I'd go back. After a few days being back on GB, I've found I still can't get my battery to last. I'm running Ineff. 1.4 and Incredikernal 6 currently, and When my screen is on (brightness set at 20%) for 10min I'll drop 15%. Anyone have words of advice? I'm seeing people with ridiculous battery life and wondering if I should run the GB RUU again. Thoughts? Also battery still burning upwards of 118 when screen is on for a little bit.
The latest ICS kernel was the biggest issue with battery life...
What settings do you have on the kernel?
I'm just letting it run, no Set CPU settings or anything. Should I not let it govern itself?

The first thing I did with s-off was downgrade to the latest GB RUU from the ICS leak. Now I'm on eng hboot and CleanRom 4.3 Pro with the GB patch and stock kernel that's packaged with the ROM. This was all yesterday. Today I've got 41% battery left after 16 hours (extended bat.) and have used the phone considerably setting up the ROM and reloading all my apps, plus several phone calls, emails and texts. I don't have 4G in my area so that's turned off and I know that 4G is a significant drain but this is noticeably better than what I was getting. I'll have a better idea in a couple of days when everything settles in.
I definitely would run the stock kernel for your testing purposes with no CPU control. If you still have major issues I'd look towards an app or location service that's enabled.

im getting great battery life back on stock ruu gb with the new patched eng hboot 2.11.111 and set cpu (1020 high, 192 low on conservative) and i play MUSIC ALL DAY AT WORK 9 FULL HOURS OF DRE BEATS ON!. also my break and lunch im on facebook and on the phone with my gf. i get like 12 hours out of my regular battery. just my 2 cents. i had ics and its blow bigtime. i dont even want the ota really.
I've been working on my friend's rezound. He's been suffering wake lock issuses since applying the 2.01 OTA. Battery has gone from about 10hrs on full charge, to about 4hrs. I unlocked bootloader and tried updating to the ics firmware and trying an ics rom but still has the same issue. I performed the s-off wire trick and rolled everything back to stock firmware and rom and that didn't work. never messed with a custom kernel. Anyone have any ideas for a fix? Or are we just going to have to wait for an official update from verizon? I've read of people on the verizon forums complaining about wake lock as well.

Ive noticed worse battery life as well after going s-off. Thought i was going crazy.
There are definitely degrees of badness here.
GB on GB firmware/radios is the coolest.
GB on ICS firmware is warmer.
ICS on GB firmware is even warmer.
ICS on ICS firmware is the hottest I've seen.
I cannot run screen-on indefinitely on any ICS without overheating the battery.
I had the same problem it appear suddenly
Cell standby took near as half screen does
I did try many rom
Only full wipe helped including internal strong
Now I'm with inf1.4
Battery is the gr8est
On the wake lock issue, someone discovered the AOSP lockscreen was preventing the phone from sleeping correctly. I can't remember if it was a certain combination or just the lockscreen running a background process.
Since you've tried all kinds of stuff I don't know if that applies to you or not but if nothing else I was hoping it might spur a thought process or new ideas for research.

Battery Jumps

I have been wandering around XDA now for about the last 3 months looking for my problem and no one seems to have the same issue...
When my battery gets down to 20%, it immediately jumps to 15%.
I'm not new to this, I've tried several ROMs and several kernels. I got the firmware patch hoping that the issues would go away. I've had random battery ups and downs.. sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad, but never consistent and acceptable. When I say "good" I'm referring to about 6 hours of very light use.
If anyone could point me in the right direction, I would be grateful.
Currently running CleanROM DE with Firmware patch.

I have a 3.7... But this is my second battery, the first one was a 3.8...
It did not do it when I bought it stock, or even when I started rooting it. It started after about the 3rd ROM I put on it, and I've never been able to get rid of it. It does get hot, but its not really out of the norm.. (most dual core phones with 4g are going to get warm, 4g takes an extreme amount of energy to use)
I can't believe this hasn't been brought up earlier... I was only hesitant to bring it up in development because I didn't want to be accused of not using the search button.

It has been brought up, but people said that it's a bad battery. I'm not convinced it's battery, I think there's something more going on. It happened to me, stock, out of the box, and with multiple batteries.
Here's a thread I posted about this a few months ago-- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514134
Run the battery down until the device powers down on its own, this will not hurt the device or battery. Keep the phone off and let the battery charge up fully. Do this a few times....

Just read your post... you're right... not much help there. And I agree, I can't see a brand new battery that's never been used or re-calibrated showing the same "symtoms" as the old battery. It has got to be something not hardware related. All my brothers have Rezounds and I actually let one of them use my battery and it didn't do it in their phone, so a bad battery is out of the question I think.

The one I swapped with has the same exact ROM as I do as well as the same kernel. The only difference may be his recovery. I think he has one version newer Amon Ra than I do... but I've been using the same recovery since the beginning, and it started doing this well after flashing that recovery.

using primarily 4g, no wifi (N when I do), no powersave mode. Thinking back, it started with the first ROM that had powersave mode. Since then I've always disabled that feature hoping it would go away, all with no luck.
It never did it when it was stock, I certainly don't want to revert it back to check now. Haven't checked when initially setting up after a flash, so I don't know if Google affects it at all.
Haven't tried a different SD card. Though I may take it out and see how it behaves after I do a dead charge on it.

It's not your SD card. Your SD card has nothing to do with your battery jumping, I promise you. If I had to guess, I'd say it's something with the kernel, but what do I know. It should be more wide-spread if it's the kernel.

For sure, but why would that cause either inaccurate battery readings, or massive power drain? It's actually not really clear which one it is, of those options, but it'd have to be absolutely enormous power drain to go from 25%-14% in a short period. So how would a SIM or SD card cause inaccurate battery readings? I ask because I have no idea, not being snarky.

Better battery life on ViperRez 1.0.3

Hi,
I installed ViperRez 1.0.3 and I found this rom perfect for me, but the battery life was bad.
So I wanted to test another ROM. When I tested Nil's Business 2.3, I found the battery life was better.
Then I got an idea: Install ViperRom and flash the Nil's Business PH98IMG.zip.
Now, my battery life is doubled and I have no problems
thx will try
i used underclock to 600mhz
to get better battery [screen time] however idle is ok for me

Try cpu monitor widget by coconuts from the market and see how your cpu is working compared to what set cpu says...even using different governors.
check "enable profiles' within setcpu (don't need to set one up, just check the box) and your phone will get faster. For me it enables the 2nd core to be used more frequently, or all the time.
Just sayin...and there's been a ton of stuff written about setcpu, perflock...etc already so no need to rehash.

i did the same thing when i read this thread im running the viperRez rom 1.0.3 with the nils business PH98IMG with s-on and the latest ice cream sandwich firmware leak.. i originilly started this process with my rezound to try and save battery life the way i did with my incredible.. not getting as good of results. i noticed he never replied with a screen shot thought id add mine.. (note: this is my extended 3.7v battery and i removed my it at one point so theres actually three more hours added to the time on battery before it died adn this is light to med use all day) this really is honestly the best combination ive seen for battery life on the rezound.i cant say its doubled..at least personally. if anyone has any other suggestions im open to hear them..
Hey guys here is something else I've just done today that seems to be working awesome..
Download Rom Manager
Download and install the Kernal that they have listed under "free"
So far the phone still runs butta smooth and my battery hasn't beening flying rapidly down..

i dont seem to see any kernel in rom manager for down load:/ a couple screen shots on where would be awesome if you have the time..
One major improvement for battery life is customizing Juice Defender. They way I set mine up is as follows:
Enable data for anything that requires data (i.e. browser, market, etc...)
Disable data for anything that doesn't require data (i.e. Launcher, Music, Messages, etc...)
Enable/Screen Off for anything you stream or tether (i.e. TuneIn, Grooveshark, DI, etc...)
What this does is only enable data for anything you actually need data for rather than right after unlocking the screen. Sure you may have to wait a second or two after launching the market before data is enabled, but by the time you're done typing in your search it should be ready to go anyways. Just a couple pennies for anyone trying to max out battery life...
Here is my screenshot.

I don't find the kernel. Where is it exactly ?

Hi,
I installed ViperRez 1.0.3 and I found this rom perfect for me, but the battery life was bad.
So I wanted to test another ROM. When I tested Nil's Business 2.3, I found the battery life was better.
Then I got an idea: Install ViperRom and flash the Nil's Business PH98IMG.zip.
Now, my battery life is doubled and I have no problems

This kernel is the exact same kernel in Viper 1.0.3. If you're getting better battery life it's probably from using the ROM for a few days and not from flashing.
Yea I was going to say but you beat me to it, they are the same kernels.
Let the ROM settle, and your battery life should increase over time, then hold steady.

4.1.2 FOTA for the P769

So, since this update is completely broken, I would like to know...
For those of us who DID get the FOTA and installed it...Once this update has been fixed and re-pushed, will we also get the new update, or am I stuck now with this broken 4.1.2 update?
What's Broken:
-App preferences do not stick (ALWAYS asks what gallery or launcher to use, etc.)
-Battery Life sucks now
-40% of texts now fail
-15% of calls are dropped
-Inaccurate battery readings (For example, will show 23%, plug it in, jumps right to 40%+)
I have tried to pull the battery, reset within menu, and reset via key press.
No idea but i think if anything we will be going to 4.2.1 or higher as the bugs were fixed with higher jelly bean roms honestly go back to ics using offline kdz flash by cmahendra

That's the problem... The app doesn;t work on my PC, so I can't go back to ICS. Please see this post for my error: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41363270&postcount=165

are you rooted with cwm installed? you could just flash the ics backup. however, I haven't had any of those issues except battery life but I still get over a day with a full charge

Nope, bone stock. And rooting this phone is a PITA (Pain in the ass). LOL. In order to root, apparently I still have to use the program that is giving me issues.
T-Mobile/LG would not leave us stuck with bugs. It is obvious they will push a newer OTA to fix these issues.
I was not aware that we are having this many issues since I am running CM 10.1 . I feel for ya man. Hang in there. Hopefully it won't be long.

FINALLY!!! I got things working properly... I ended up going back to ICS 10G. Can't find the 10E, so I'm still without root for the moment. However, all app preferences stick now. So it certainly was the JB build that I had.

Ditto, none of the issues mentioned, my defaults stick. other than shorter battery, but its expected.. Still get a days use 3-4 hrs screen time.. I'm rooted, cwm recovery, bootloader unlocked, otherwise clean stock, tmo addons disabled.

The only thing I can think of is I either had a bad download, or disabled something that was helping to hold the defaults. Day 2 back on ICS and all is still good.
I have no issues with battery life and my defaults stick
