hi guys,
i've just ordered a htc hero on orange and i have 7 days to try it. I will receive it on tuesday, so whilst i'm waiting i have many questions that i would like help with. My computer knowledge is good, but with mobiles i'm almost useless, so apologies if i end up asking questions which may sound pretty straightforward to many of you.
1. The hero will come with orange firmware, but i assume its a lot slower than custom firmwares, so what is the latest and the best known firmware at the moment and what is the procedure on installing it?
2. Since I have 7 days to test out the phone, i want to try it with the latest firmware, but i'm nervous and i want to play it safe and need to protect the original orange firmware, so what is involved in making a FULL BACKUP of the orange firmware and if i decide i want to put the orange firmware back onto the htc, how do i do this?
3. Is there any risk involved in the above procedures where i could mess up the phone and not be able to fix it again?
4. Lastly, if I replaced the phone with the current latest firmware and at a later date Android 2.0 came out, will i be able to upgrade to the latest operating system without problems?
Many thanks again

1) why would you assume this? Orange dont put anything on there that slows the phone down, only an app for extra orange settings, which i believe takes you to a webpage...
2) read up on this, we cannot type it out every time. look for nandroid. But if you are trying it use the official update method from the orange site.,
3) same question, if you follow instructions you will be fine.,
4) It has been said by HTC that 2.0 will come to the Hero.... again this is plastered all over the forums and I do believe that your a lazy ass for not looking this up yourself.
Barry - it seems that rather than helping your simply having a go at me for asking questions. It might be a straight forward procedure for you, but I clearly stated that i'm a noob when it comes to the understanding of mobile phones. If you don't want to help then simply ignore my thread, rather than throwing insulting comments mate.
1. As for telling me that orange doesn't slowdown the phone, well many forum users tell a different story as they said there is a huge difference in speed between modaco firmware and orange's own version.
2. Nandroid is one of many and people have also mentioned sprite and mybackup which confuses us noobs as to which one is best and simplest one to use.
3. The 3rd question is not the same as no.2 because i'm trying to ask if there is any risk of totally bricking the phone, which might not affect you, but it means that i end up stuck on a 24mth contract with a bricked handset.
4. It seems your simply increasing your post count as you didn't read my question properly....I never asked if HTC 2.0 will come to hero....i asked that if i update to a custom firmware now, will i still be okay in updating to android 2.0 or could i run into problems because i have a different firmware.
Hi Mate,
There's a lot of useful info around these forums though i hate the 'High and mighty' approach a lot of people have around here, i dont know if they get a kick out of it or just generally like being unhelpful and worship the search god.
From my experience the search on this site is almost completely useless as you have to know exactly what it is you're searching for in the first place - and the point is that Noobs dont know what their looking for!
As for help with your questions i'll try my best! I have the Hero on Orange also - just had it for over a month.
1. The Orange Firmware doesn't have the bloat you'd expect - it's pretty much the same as the official HTC firmware bar the Orange boot logo. The reason Modaco is so fast is that it has tweaks and such to make it faster.
2. It's possible to do this - however you'll need to install a Custom Boot Image. I made a quick guide for someone else here :- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4868874#post4868874
The custom image will allow you to do a Nandroid backup of the currently installed ROM and it can also be restored - however the Orange Rom can also be downloaded from the orange website too and installed if needed using the RUU that coms with it.
3. There's always a risk when flashing firmwares and such. If the instructions are followed then generally you should be ok but theres always the small chance of something unexpected happening.
4. If i understand the question correctly - then yes you are able to install the latest official firmware when it's released. Though i hear that the latest official firmwares have been harder to 'Root' - maybe someone else could clarify.
Anyway i hope these answer your questions - and i'm 99% sure you'll be sticking with the Hero - from my first Month with it, i find it's the best phone i've ever had. Yes i've even owned 'one of them iThingys'.
Just for info I'm running Amon Ra's recover Image 1.2.3, the Modaco 2.8 rom with the Teknologist 1.8 kernel.
Cheers
Paul
thank u so much paul. Mate thats all i was asking for and thank goodness someone like u is here to help us noobs on the forum..ur an asset to this forum..keep up the good work.
I've just received the hero around 5 mins ago and i'm gonna play about with it to see if there even is the need to update the rom and will let u know how i get on.
I'm worried of scratching my touch screen, so my question is that can i get hold of a cover or something that can protect it?
Cheers mate...much appreciate it
No worries mate - glad to help people, shame most people round here find it such a chore.
I've been using my Hero for just over a month and havn't protected it with anything. I always take care to slip it into an empty pocket.
From what others are saying the screen is made of gass and quite resistant to scratches - obviously scraping car keys down it isn't the best idea but i'm sure itll be ok if you take a bit of care with it.
I also hear the response of the screen is lowered if a protector is added. Take a look on the Hero Accessories forum, there may be a thread on there about covers / cases and such.
Cheers
Paul
my problem is that i have 2 mobiles in one pocket and that sometimes means i end up putting my house keys in the same pocket too. The reason i have to have a phone in my trouser pocket is because i'm deaf in both ears and unless the phone is ultra loud, i can't hear it, so the only alert is when the phone vibrates in my pocket.
People recommend either the flexishield or the invisibleshield, don't know wot to go for, lol.
Also the htc unlock button should only be the one on the most right, yet if i press home button, that too unlocks it..is there any way of disabling this or altering the button combination?
To be fair, most trousers / jeans have 4 pockets. If you want to scratch all of your stuff, put both phones and your keys in one pocket. If you want to keep them nice, use some of your 3 spare pockets. At the end of the day, it's a £400 phone - treat it as such and it will reward you by staying nice and shiny.
true, but its not just keys that can do the damage mate...i'm a cable installer and my work involves crouching, bending, lying down and the worry is that the trousers stretch and crack or damage the screen, so some case or screen protector would be nice to have.
Some people say that the touch sense doesn't respond well, but i tried to use the touch with its original screen protecter sticker which comes with it when orange sends it and it works fine.

Well it sounds like you'd need a case to keep it protected in your situations. I'm sure there's loads of options available. Either that or just leave it out of harms way
How are you finding the Hero now you've had it for a few days now?
@newbiephone Belt mounted case is what is needed.
hi paul mate,
i think the screen protection is the last of my worries
i have the following issues which i don't know how to address:-
1. Low reception - after reading up, i switched off 3g and this increased the reception, but only slightly.
2. contacts / people list - I have exported 350+ contacts from nokia e75 into a CSV file. Then i imported it into google mail and now i synced the HTC with google and this allowed me to download the contacts list. However the contact's numbers are all classed as additional "notes" rather than numbers. I hope i don't have to manually type in 350 contacts!
3. Is there a more simple dialpad that you can recommend? I hate the htc one.
Hi Newbiefone
Can I just say something here that will satisfy all your worries!!!
You wont be wanting to return the Hero after 7 days because it is a quality phone....
Before long you`ll be installing roms, themes, apps galore.
Plus we`ve all got Android 2.0 to look forward to too....
lol, thanks for the positive comments mate, but these are not worries mate, but problems that need diagnosing and solving. I'm sure one these are solved, my htc will stay with me hopefully forever! ROFLOL!
Oops sorry newbie my post was in relation to your first post!
Only just seen your last post..
I sync my contacts with outlook. Can you not import them into there with your csv files and then sync your hero with outlook?
I have seen may posts about problems with contacts and syncing.
To be honest ive not had one problem with it the way i do it..
If you have any more questions just give us a shout. Had my hero since the day it was launched on Orange.
Ah Newbie just been thinking there is a dialpad out there that ive seen. Just cant think of the name lol...
Christ maybe i should think before i type!
A question for one of your questions. Have you tried the latest radio firmware?
Mine and my girlfriends Hero signal are both poor but we do live an airaid shelter!!
Johnny boy your a STAR!!! If you were a girl, i'd kiss u, lol!!
I exported from nokia pc suite straight to outlook and then used HTC SYNC Manager to synchronise calender and contact its done it perfectly!! Thank u so much!
Right what do u mean by the radio firmware? I currently have the latest orange firmware and was adviced not to mess around with that firmware by someone on the forums as i'm still in my 7 days exchange warranty with orange.
Now how about that dialpad name?
LOL oh i`m glad it worked. I dont know why people have so many problems sorting out their contacts on here. Ive seen many a story about syncing problems. I just think this way is so easy i dont know why everyone doesnt do it this way. Ah well never mind at least ive helped someone.
Mmm best leave radio firmware then till you decide to keep it.
Dial pad now thats a tricky one i had a quick look and couldnt find it.
I`m happy with the stock one so i didnt pay much attention to it. Maybe i should have lol!

the reason many people have problems mate is because many import/export the more difficult way via CSV, then google then HTC and if the CSV is messed, then it won't work, but outlook seems to import data perfectly.
If you can't help with a dialpad program, how about like a contacts grid? The Favourites one takes up too much space and only can add a verticle list...if i'm gonna use the whole screen, then i might as well have at least 9 contacts or more at the same time, rather than 3 at a time.
Hi, i just wondering if we can replace Samsung Vibrant screen with the Samsung Galaxy S 4G one so that we don't need to manually make a hole for our front facing camera, is that possible?
If so, that would be really awesome.
any body?
I dont see why not except, isnt the screen glued on and wouldn't removing the screen make it impossible to re-attach another
I think u could...as long as u carefully remove the old glue with some goo gone or something like it..but im not sure what kinda glue to use to reattach the screen

I've installed an FFC on my vibrant. You don't need a new screen. You just need to take apart the phone from the back. The bezel doesn't even have to come off. Get yourself a Revision 2 FFC and when you go to install it, the only thing you'll need is a guitar pick (works great) or another safe prying tool to take the phone apart, Goo-Gone and Q-Tips. The hardest part of the whole process is the amount of time you'll be sitting there taking the black paint off the screen with the Goo-Gone. It's taken me about 30 minutes on two phones I've done. The hole is already there. Your phone will look just like the Galaxy S 4G!
Thanks for the reply, but the Vibrant my friend gave me has a cracked screen and bezel that I have to replace anyway. I figured it might be easier to just buy a new screen with a camera hole already (which the T959V does have) than to scrape out one.
Also what rom do you recommend? Seems they all have problems - unstable, no 911, no gps etc.

as far as roms go for 911, only the Cyangen based roms have that issue, gps fonuctions on almost all 2.3 roms, and all 2.1/2.2 roms. stability really seems based on the device. i use Miui as a daily driver, yet i see people complain about issues that in the 5 months of running it I have never personally experienced.

I know this is really late and a bit off topic to be honest, but to anyone interested, I just used a LCD/Digitizer/Bezel/microphone/antennae assembly out of a Vibrant to put in my SGS4G. Different application, but I'm sure it'll work the same given the circumstances of any one still wanting to put a front facing camera in their Vibrant. The only difference is I had to switch out the ear piece/audio jack/proximity sensor assembly because it had a different connector on the board. This is the lazy fix for someone who has both phones, but needs to swap out certain parts. In my case it was the entire screen and bezel, but this confirms the OP's question, yes it will work.
Just thought I post results since I came to this thread in the first place looking for answers.
Good morning. I am considering per ordering an S3 but before I do I would like to ask a couple of questions...I do know there are going to be differences between the US version and the Euorpean one but I figure they are close enough. I am comming from a droid X.
1) how do like your S3 so far? Is the size too big?
2) How difficult to root?
3) is the charger chord have the same connection as the droid x?
I am not a flash ahold but have been known to toss a few rooms around. Does titanium work?
Thanks for your time and information.
Kevin
Just go to a phone shop to hold one first or just cut a piece of card with same measurements to see if it fits your hand, and there is an easier Rooting method now with even easier ones coming along.

Perfect for me. I've got big mitts, no problem using it one-handed.
2) How difficult to root?
Very easy.

No idea, never seen a droid. USB cable is removeable from the plug.

To give you a more informative answer.
1. The size is awesome I have pretty long fingers so I cant touch anything on the entire screen, don't know what yours are like. As far as feel its very nice in your hands it do-sent feel like its going to slip out your hand, and feels like a good build.
2. rooting is very easy Chain fire has made a great root kit and even for a beginner you would find it very simple buy like you said you've done some rooting and flashing before.
Link to the root method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238
3. If the droid x uses mirco USB then your sorted it will use the same its a standardised connector anyway.
the phone is awesome other than the ui redraw problem the phone is flawless.

Apart from your use of the word "micro", care to tell me in what way your answer is "more informative" than mine?
Loving the GS3, moved from the .GS2. Size wise I was habit worried when first held it but after a little adjustment it's fine, fairly similar to using my .GS2. For a seasoned or not user the rooting process is very simple.
Only issue I now have is there aren't enough ROMs to play around with lol, also can't wait for CM9 to come, was so polished on the .GS2 even in the nightlies .
Only real gripe I currently have is Apex launcher is a little laggy and statusbar colours, not found one I like but was thinking of learning to theme so going to use it as an excuse to start.

Fortunately it's a 1'000mA (= 1A) charger. Otherwise it would take VERY long to charge the beast.
As already said the only concern should be screen size.If your hands are too small you'll not be able to use it in one hand, and it might feel awkward.

Hi guys,
I just bought Motorola Razr XT910 GSM and i was looking for simple guide on rooting/installing custom ROMs but with no success.
Infos about my phone are:
System version:
672.180.41.XT910.NonEFIGSRetail.en.EU
Baseband version:
U_04.10.00R
Build number:
6.7.2-180_SPU-19-TA-11.6
I was wondering what is the simplest way (step by step guide would be nice) to install leaked OTA 4.1.2 ?
Is that version stable with GSM patch?
Currently i have clean stock ICS 4.0.4 on it. No root no nothing.
Just to mention i'm linux user, if there is a way to root and install 4.1.2 from linux that would be good if not i'll find some windows machine to do that!
Thanks

Is anyone else facing this problem , has plagued me since my 2.3.6 days. And since your phone is new, thought I'd ask.
The screen picks up all sorts of mis-correct inputs when pugged into the AC mains, especially noticeable when texting in any app. This happends to a lesser extent when using the USB port. Had this phone for 6 months now. Am using the OG charger of course. Strange one may think but is this a general widespread problem ? This is the only problem holding me back from rooting and getting the JB ball rolling. BTW, had 2 razr's so I have two AC adaptors. Tried both.
If this is a digitizer problem as someone did indicate once somewhere, I'm regret ever having bought this phone. Have had to refrain from using it while charging. And if so, am going to push for a different device. Didn't buy a dysfunctional phone, for sure
Service Center means a LOT of downtime and I cannot even backup app data as I haven't root. Can anyone help me here?
Thanks !
PS :
Here's claims to back me up. If so, has anyone successfully replaced their product ? I wouldn't mind an HD given that I did pay full RRP.
for no reason my Razr will suddenly start going crazy. Random buttons will be pressed on the screen like someone is trying to hack into it (but I know they are not). Because of the random key presses, apps will open and close super fast. The only way to stop it is to power down and power it back up. Which after I do that, it's fine

Researched the issue months ago and learned there seems to be an issue with the digitizer (that's the piece of glass and components that identify your swipes). I thought it was only with certain earlier versions of the Droid, so am disappointed to hear you're having trouble with the Razr. Some folks have reported sending it back to Motorola, and $200 later, it's fixed. While early sufferers were Motorola users, I just read a post where someone is having the same issue with an HTC Eris...
I suggest returning your phone for a new one

I had same issue when i plug it in wall cord, i cant click on anything precise, its the charger, i use one that came with my nexus 7 and have no trouble using phone while charging. I didnt test it on USB port, but im sure its charger problem. Try another charger!
I havent bought my phone new, its used one but in perfect condition!
Also i should have mention that i had same problem with Galaxy I7500 (first samsung galaxy device, not the tablet its phone) couple years ago and also with Galaxy S3 (my brothers phone). Same problems occured when using some chargers. Try swaping chareges until you find one that fits
Maybe i'm wrong but thats what helped me.

Could it be a grounds issue?

I hope not. Don't see why a 5.2V device needs grounding. And if anything .. the screen is glass.. It's capacitive in nature to a small extent. Built up charge should not do what it does. The USB off my MSI mobo and ASUS is filtered and grounded.. Even they do this to an admittedly lower frequency.
The Moto charger puts out a healthy 1A if I'm not mistaken. Not trading that in for some POS BB charger- It's 800mAh the one lying around at a lower 5V rating. That's going to mess things up in the long run-- higher voltage and amperage charging is faster and gets to the full capacity of the battery- the voltage has a say when it comes to lithium batteries.
Anyone here get a replacement from Moto if they had the same issue? Does you think its worth a try?
Thanks for the replies:good:
I had a Milestone (a GSM variant of the Droid) and it had the very same issue. However, it had a metal frame - upon touching it the issue was instantly alleviated.
Sent using a touch screen
Napisane na ekranie dotykowym
So this works out to an inherent flaw with this screen? I had a SAMOLED on my OG Wave and it never messed up {ever} must have been the metal body. Nevertheless, The razr is FUBAR when charging. Had an S2 for a while, never cropped up despite having a similar screen panel. Think I should just file a complaint and get the ball rolling here? Though service (Moto) is terrible in my country, and I don't think they've even launched the Razr HD here. I'd rather pick it over the S3.
WIshful thinking!
Hi everyone! Today I finally decided to register in this great community, mainly because I'm looking for help and you are the ones that can help me.
I'm Henry and as the title says, I've hold and played with a Samsung Galaxy S3 running nothing more than Gingerbread. Why and how were my first questions when I first saw it, but I haven't been able to answer that.
This is the story: a friend of mine was given that GS3 hoping that he could solve the stuttering and lagging that it had (has) after a professor of him took it to a "technician". He, being the Android lover he is became surprised, so he came to me yesterday hoping that we could bring things back to normal (install stock jelly bean), but with no avail. That "thing" has the stock recovery and is not rooted, things we found EXTREMELY weird. We spent three hours trying to root it and then install a new recovery using different tools (gingerbreak, odin, odin mobile [we realized odin mobile needs root permissions to work, but still], samsung kies, universal_gb_root, framaroot) but you guessed: nothing worked. The only thing we didn't use was SuperOneClick. We couldn't put it into download mode and when we connected it to the pc, it didn't appeared as "adb interface" or "android composite device" but appeared with another strange name that had nothing to do with samsung or android, I can't recall the name of it right now. The other things we found was that the GS3 was showing that the internal storage was just 200mb, when it's a phone with "16"gb of storage, and that the battery says SAMSONG instead of SAMSUNG.
Long story short: it was an international, unlocked Samsung Galaxy GS3 i9300 running Gingerbread. My friend got it because a professor of him wanted he to fix it because after she took it to a "technician" it was very laggy. It was not rooted, it has stock android recovery (useless) and odin won't recognize it.
Do you guys have any effing idea of what is going on and how can we fix it?
We have three hypothesis: 1) they swapped her phone with a chinese knockoff (an extremely identical and functional knockoff); 2) they swapped the GS3's hard drive; 3) they didn't know what they were doing and installed Gingerbread instead of Jelly Bean (yup, sounds unlikely).
Thank you very much for yor help and attention!
Before getting halfway through your post, I decided you were talking about a clone/ knock-off

Then it's an extremely accurate clone. It has the samsung's boot animation, sounds, everything!

They all do. These things you listed are the easiest things to "clone". In fact, since they live in software, they could easily have been ripped out of the official firmware. A friend of mine (willingly) bought a Note 2 clone. It even has the annoying whistle notification.
It's not that accurate a clone though, if it comes with gingerbread, which the S3 never came with.

Well, you do have great points. Even so, is there something we can do about it? Besides give the police a heads up?

You need to prove 2 things.
1) It is a fake
2) It was not a fake before
2 is quite easy if it was supplied form an official network / carrier / provider store. 1 will involve screenshots of the about phone area and some physical shots as well as some info gained from this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cpuid.cpu_z&hl=en

You're welcome. Please let me know how you get on,
Easiest way to tell a clone is to take the back off and compare side by side with a genuine s3, the shape of the inner mouldings, position of sim and sd readers is very hard to exactly match during the reverse engineering process.
But the gingerbread and lack of download mode is conclusive in itself.
Check the imei and serial numbers on the original phone packaging against the imei of the handset you hold, if they are the same then your friend bought a clone.
