[Q] Should I call AT&T to have phone unlocked - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Any advantages to doing this besides being able to use it with another company or during travel?

I tried 3 times. None of them works. One of the lady is so nice that would like to help me out by overwrite the system to unlock but she couldn't. She said i have to wait at least 3 months or until August then call back. She's also willing to help me unlock any other phones but not the Note (to new). Spend $25 to unlock is the best option for now

@OP: Unless you plan to use it on non AT&T networks, no real use. Plus there is a 3-6 month wait period based on your history to give unlock codes.

I work for ATT and I promise you, it is a real pain in the arse to get them to unlock it

Sorry mate, you may be working there, but you might be wrong here. I have had alteast half a dozen phones unlocked in the last few years, and every time it took no more than 2-3 calls. Only hitch is to wait for 3-6 months after adding phone to line.

[Q] Unlocking Bell Galaxy S2 4G

Hello everyone, so its finally the launch day for the SGS2! Rejoice!
I picked mine up this morning from Tbooth for 599.99 no contract. I plan on using the phone on telus though, so I need a sim-unlock.
I know there is a root sim unlock app, but does this work on the Bell version of the phone? What about paid unlock codes? Will http://cgi.ebay.ca/UNLOCK-CODE-UK-SAMSUNG-GALAXY-S2-GALAXY-PRO-B7510-/260812982312?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3cb9aa4828#ht_4291wt_1139 work for bell???
I guess I should just try the unlock app... a little hesitant. I realize there might already be an answer for this, but I am just looking for some help. Thank you.
Diito. I bought my Bell SGS2 outright this morning as well. Damn sweet phone. I'm looking to unlock and run on Telus as well.
What I thought they don't allow you to buy it off contract anymore...weird, I am from Toronto.
Anyways for unlocking I would recommend cellunlocker.net (I have used it a few times and it worked, fast and good pricing).

I just bought mine this morning non-contract and intend to use it on Telus as well. They just make you go month to month and pay for 1 month of service and you can cancel in 30 days essentially with no penalties.
I've been looking for a Bell root flash as well...bell has a ton of crap pre-installed that I definately don't dig.
Before all this unlock code ish
try the nv_data.bin thing!
Let me know how it goes

Also you need to pay the activiation cost as well right?
That is not really worth it if you lived in Toronto/GTA, Ontario. I got one at Pacific Mall for 650, unbranded and unlocked UK version.

I live in Calgary xD.
Phone was $625 after tax plus the $50 for the rate plan and $35 activation plus tax so not a huge difference. I'm also wondering if anyone knows the number of digits the unlock code for the GS2 should be.....I received a code from cellunlocker.net and due to poor instructions and myself being uncontrollably impatient to use the phone on telus put in only part of the code..or so i beleive.
They sent the code in this format NETWORK:=48684XXX;PROVIDER:=69599XXX;SUBNET:=85256XXX;DEFREEZE:=05193XXX.
I've used 2 attempts and REALLY want to know its right before i enter it again. I feel like a serious noob after this lol

Umm interesting, I only get one code from the many time I used.
Anyways if you have tried the network and provider one, then the codes are unlikely to be working.
What I will do is, either email them or call them and ask which one to use. If they say use the one that you already tried and didn't work, you should make a video of the process of you inputing the codes and if it didn't work and, just email them that video to get your money back.
But you gota be extra careful now, you only have one attempt before it freezes lol.
Now I wouldn't risk it if they told you the one to use and you already tried it which failed.
You should try to use the things that SS2006 suggested.
cellunlocker.net probably won't refund you the money if you do not have a video, but I can send you the cost since I recommended and it failed. It should be something like $8 right? lol
Good luck.
Edit: okay guys I found this thread and it confirmed to be working:
http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...ree-unlocking-solution-reportedly-not-working
Now you should start reading and learn stuff before you actually start flashing and doing things.
But you should note it will void your warranty if you start flashing and rooting, so you might want to think about that as well.
There is unlock available. under other thread. I unlocked usin theunlock.ca code. i didnt know about root/unlock when i paid for it. But it works.

So did that software unlock or the sim unlock app work for anyone?
Or should I just use theunlock.ca ?
Same as you guys, I'll be picking mine up today and unlocking to use with Telus.

My only concern with rooting and unlocking it via the methods available here on XDA is that it seems to be a hit or miss with what kind of glitches you may end up with.
I'm hoping theunlock.ca will preserve all the original device settings, firmware, etc. and just allows me to use it on my Rogers account.
Rooting with XX OXA kernel worked.
Then I used this to use it on Telus.

BELL, rooted and unlock with ZS firmware.. up and running with TELUS..
I just subscribed to this web site to thank you A LOT! It works perfectly!!
theunlock.ca worked for me!
Did it with Helroz galaxy s unlock and it worked for me!!
I simply root the bell galaxy s2 by following:
w**.inspiredgeek.com/2011/04/29/breaking-samsung-galaxy-sii-s2-is-now-rooted-using-xwkdd-insecure-kernel-with-superoneclick
Then I have install the galaxy s unlock + busy tool
gone trough the 1-2-3 steps form the galaxy s unlcok tool
Then boot the phone with my Telus sim card, wait a few minutes to get hooked to the network and Voila!!
Note: once you flash the kernel with odin, you'll get a yellow triangle at the boot screen, I have simple flash back with the original kernel with odin after root grants to get rid of it, the original I use is I9100XWKDD_StockKernel.tar, too big to get attached
I have a bell S2 when i put a rogers sim i dont get a prompt to enter to the network control key. Im running 2.3.5
That means its already unlocked

custom ROM to unlock phone?

my mom is here, in cambodia, visiting from the states. I'm trying to unlock her phone, so she can use the SIM here. Her phone is rooted with the stock ROM, would installing a custom ROM unlock her phone? or if there is another way to unlock her phone, without the unlock code from the AT&T, let me know. Thanks.
yeah. pay an online site for the code. does she really need to make long distance calls from her note? why not just grab a throw away local prepaid phone.
i dont think there are any free options at the moment. well there is Dell Fongo wifi calling app.
as stated, you must visit a site and pay for an unlock code. there is no custom rom that will sim unlock it. As of right now there are no free unlock options either.
Don't some ICS roms support voip? Would that be an option, and if she needs to call, just wifi tether off your phone or go somewhere with a router?
Also paying for minutes with Skype and going off your wifi

if you have GrooveIP, and a wi fi connection, she can call all she wants for free..
thanks for the reply. i understand your concerns but its more convenient to make local calls. she has friends and family here that she needs to call or they call her. there isn't wifi everywhere she goes. i mean she paid for her Note, she shouldn't have to spend another 10-15 bucks on a cheapo. she has every right to use her phone anywhere, even if it's not on an AT&T network. anyways, we'll try to contact AT&T.

we understand your frustration but by the time AT&T gets back to you she'll be on a plane back already. having a killer phone in hand and not being able to use it is infuriating. besides $15 is cheaper than the $30 most online unlock places charge.
yea. shes here for another week. when i called AT&T before, for my unlock code. it was quick, i just gave them IMEI number and they gave me the 16 digit unlock code. no more than 5 minutes.

No you can't. You will have to pay a company like CreekDirt mentioned. You should have picked up the unlocked international version.
You may also want to go talk to ATT about it. Explain that you will be travelling to a region of the world where ATT has no service and that you intend to get a SIM card locally and would like to use your Galaxy Note. ATT can unlock the phone for you, and if you are polite about it sometimes they will do it prior to the 6 month window they generally have for new phones, especially if you are a long time customer.
Att will only unlock it after they lose exclusivity of it which would be when the T-Mobile version comes out.

I don't know if their policy changed since 2007 but back then, I e-mailed their customer support for unlock code for my phone because I told them I am currently out of country in Burma, a country they don't have roaming partner so I would like to use the local SIM in my phone and they e-mail me unlock code within 24 hours with the unlock code.
Yeah they used to do that. Lately they claim they can't provide codes if they are the exclusive carrier. They denied me an unlock code on the Note and Samsung Focus Flash saying they won't provide them until a certain date.

It took about two hours. They were running a special that if you posted a youtube video of you unlocking your phone with their service it was free.
Thanks
Thanks on your answers ...
I'm kind off hesitant ... or maybe paranoid about having sent my imei number to somebody ...
I guess i have no other choice, since AT&T is not cooperating, even after several attempts ...

It took about 10 minutes for my code to come
They were willing to do it with me, I was told that Samsung has asked them not to release unlock until August 19th. At that time they will happily provide the unlocks. I've been with AT&T for 10+ years, they have never hesitated to give me an unlock code except for an iPhone. I admit, its the first time they've delayed, but I have no reason to doubt their explanation. Honestly, the CSR (all 3, I tried several times) all seemed surprised that they didn't have access to do it.
So, in short, if you need it now, pay. Otherwise, be patient. Either we'll figure out how to unlock it, or AT&T can do it when they get the codes.
The unlock code will typically require stock Rom ...
My code kept failing.. I called supplier, they insisted I needed a stock Rom.
Reverted to stock and paid for code worked. Phone now remains unlocked regardless of Rom i install.

>> there is some 'minor differance' eg ATT - TMobile .... but then its 'GSM frequency rate' and you can go from one to another (provided you have right SIM card....

Freely admit others may be smarter than me.
But I rooted but did not unlock this phone.
Installed several ROMs none of which spontaneously unlocked the phone from the carrier unlock.
Attempts to install different carrier SIM didn't work until I reverted to stock ROM and executed a carrier unlock with code. Even installing an AT&T ROM, the phone still only worked with Telus SIM. I didn't care if the phone was officially 'unlocked' -- I just needed to be able to use an AT&T SIM in it. Installing an AT&T stock ROM didn't accomplish that, nor did any of the many choices available here in the DEV forum.
Advice I got right here in XDA was such that I had to unlock first... before installing other ROMs. Perhaps, I was misled?
On a Galaxy Infuse 4G, I was able to root the phone and find the unlock code inside a file located on the phone. Then unlock before new ROM install.
Wasn't able to do that successfully on the note.

Oddly enough, I haven't purchased an unlock code, yet my device recognizes my T-Mobile sim. I've only rooted and installed custom roms + radios. Maybe I'm lucky.

The only way that you'll be able to do this is by buying the device outright (off contract) and then requesting a SIM unlock from AT&T. Otherwise, you're going to have to buy the device and wait a minimum of 3 months before you can get it unlocked.

Towelroot works perfectly. However, don't expect too much. I rotted mine and went about changing the launcher and such and completely borked the device. I had to do a factory reset on it. Seems that Dynamic Display relies heavily on the ASUS Launcher.

They were ok with him unlocking it because he does have service with them however they couldnt register the IMEI because they need proof of use on their network before they will give out the code. The dont want someone to just by a device and automatically take it to another network. Legere was right the other day.. They will rape you and they are greedy bastards.
If I paid full retail no discounts for a device I should be able to do whatever I want with it. You made your money off me already. Let me do what I please

The phone does not have to be on your account for 60 days. You just have to be an att subscriber and the account in good standing for 60 days. They cannot provide a code to a non att subscriber. mainly because it doesn't work that way. You can get the full details about device unlock at Http://www.att.com/deviceunlock

Exceptions can be made for certain customers that must travel internationally...specifically for military, or goodwill/missionary work. If your convincing enough you can get it done
I had a lengthy conversation with AT&T as well as a BBB complaint filed against them for just this reason.
A subsidy lock is placed on all devices regardless if it is subsidized or not. They will provide an unlock code only if you meet their ransom demand of 3 full months of promptly paid service on the device in question on their network after paying full retail value for the handset. At that point you can request an unlock code and in 5 to 10 business days you will receive the unlock code by email. So basically you can finally migrate to T-Mobile or another carrier with the device after about 100 days of ownership of a device with an average expected usage of only 365 days.
when speaking to a representative from the office of the president of AT&T Mobility in regards to the BBB complaint I was told this and I quote verbatim what was told to me "If you don't like our terms for sale of an AT&T branded headset you can always choose to buy from another company with terms more favorable to you."
Is unlocking going to be very effective on other US networks?
I mean, if it can barely call/text and would have poor to no LTE/usable mobile data, is it really going to be worthwhile to unlock? That's been the problem with importing previous Padfone models, and I find it hard to believe that an AT&T-exclusive device would be much different...
Granted, I hope that's not the case, because my AT&T contract is almost up and I really need a device upgrade...

It should work perfectly on other US networks. Imported models don't have the necessary data frequencies for all US networks (especially Tmobile). I'm buying the padfone e (dual sim, quadband wcdma) and using it as my backup phone and primary tablet. I'll use my K910 as a hotspot if I really need mobile data but my tablets are primarily used on wifi.

But how do we actually know if it'll work well? Do we have access to the white sheets, or some other listing of it's supported frequencies?
It just seems like, if it's only on AT&T in the US, then it's probably built for AT&T and less compatible than we'd like.

As previously advised I am a Tmo customer I used a friends ATT account as a means to get around the unlocking. After about a 1 1/2 months of having ATT open cases and reviewing the account to have it unlocked, it did get unlocked.
This was not an easy feat at all. Literally took calling in almost every other day, speaking with "supervisors/managers" making many complaints to have it resolved.
The concept is annoying that I have to but the device full price and cant do what I want with my device. Glad the unlocking bill was passed even though there will still be a lot of red tape from carriers to get codes.
I am using Tmo LTE and havent had any data issues w/ us bands. Again it was a process, however I ddnt have to spend anymore than what I paid for the device and grateful for my friend for helping me with that.

Now that it has been a few months, is it still working good on T-Mobile LTE and HSPA+ networks? Speedtest.net speeds?

[Q] Can the Samsung Gear S be Unlocked

Since Samsung is treating it as a standalone device or like a phone can it be Unlocked as phones can? Can I walk into any carrier that has the Gear S in Stock pay it outright in full and unlock it if necessary I don't want a 2 Year contract on a Smart watch that carriers consider an accessory
I would like to know that, too. If it can completely replace a phone.
As I posted in my reviews in the Gear S General section, you can use it primarily as a phone that makes and receives calls and SMS. Consider it a feature-phone Nokia from the mid-noughties. And it needs charging daily, maybe twice for heavy use.

My limit has been reached
Over on androidcentral, someone reported successfully using it as a stand alone phone.
I received mine today and requested an unlock code from T-mo, which they say can take up to 14 days to arrive. I'll write back if/when I get it.
I also talked to ATT, and they told me they would not know how to unlock it, but I may just have chatted with an unknowledgeable person.

Thanks this was before I got my gear. But yes it can be unlocked many have gotten it. Just a heads up I'm sure you know unlocking for T-mobile will only let you use AT&T or their bootleg companies (MVNO). AT&T takes between 48 hours and 7 days some have said
^ Yes. It's a bit disappointing that they don't come with more bands.
Also, I kind of figured that the ATT info I was given was incorrect. That chat took forever and the person I talked to had no clue about the Gear S.
Do you know how to unlock it once you have the code, other than inserting a different SIM and hoping you'll get prompts for the unlock code?
