New GSII arriving today, block 2.3.6? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

My wife's new (refurb) SGII is arriving today. If the phone arrives with 2.3.4, is there any way to block or refuse the 2.3.6 update? I assume it is recommended to stay with 2.3.4 if possible? I do not wish to root.

I just got my refurb the other day and it came with 2.3.6. Yours will probly be the same.

From what I have read. I would block it, especially if you are not looking to root. I have also heard that it may update on its own, so you may only be able to block for so long.

Just don't click the software update button and you'll never see it. It will not automatically push to your phone. I got my refurb at the beginning of Feb and it had 2.3.4.

Sale Price
Check out the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1561099
The on-line sale price for a new Samsung Galaxy S II is now $9.99. I just bought mine last week at $99.99 so I called AT&T and they credited my account. Great deal at $9.99!

Damn. What's funny I got tired of my Backflip and added a second line for my fiance and took the GS2 and gave her the flip. Go figure my actual contract just ended and I could've gotten a new one if I waited a month!

If yours comes with 2.3.6, you can always flash 2.3.4 if you want. There should be no negative side effects.
You can prevent the OTA update by deleting the download manager, but of course you need to be rooted first. You could always root, delete it, and then unroot.
What is your reason for not wanting to root?

i got my refurb yesterday and it came with 2.3.6 already. what exactly is the problem with having it? i was able to root and install a custom ROM pretty easily. i had 2.3.6 on my atrix too before i switched.

2.3.6 had some serious wi-fi/battery drain bugs..

Nothing wrong with 2.3.6 in general - but the AT&T UCKK6 build for I777 is AWFUL. It has some major power management issues.
Later I9100 2.3.6 builds, like XWKL1 and XWLA4, are much better.

I monitor my battery drain pretty closely. I get the same per hour battery drain with 2.3.6 (UCKK6) and 2.3.4 when My location is not enabled. 2.3.6. is slightly better battery-wise when I have My location turned on. Plus, 2.3.6 has a few fixes and improvements.

Holy ****! $10 is a great deal. Got mine during the $50 sale at Radioshack on Black Friday. if you get the 'package' deal its only $0.01. Everyone tell your friends!

Trying to convince Mrs Slavestate to get one instead of waiting for the iJoke 5 this summer but after our experience with the Motorola Backflip she hates Android now haha.

I've heard that T-Mo is no longer selling the Vibrant 3g. The 4g ships with 2.2. If you get a refurbished phone it will probably come with the stock firmware.

Wrong. If you purchase a phone in store it is always brand new. You only get a refurbished device if its a warranty exchange. 3g does not come with 2.2.

Most stores don't have them anymore. So I suppose if you are lucky and get one that does, yes, it will be new.
close thread, they do come with 2.2 mine just did.
So I just talked to my associate who just got a replacement vibrant the other day and she confirmed as well that her's came with 2.2. And yes, at this point T-Mob stores are receiving small shipments of OG vibrants if at all. Any of the new ones that I have received have had 2.1.

Um, we're still selling Vibrant (3G) models new in some locations. In fact I know about 32 locations that are and that can still order them. I'm sure there are others.

So close to giving up

This phone is awesome until i make or receive calls. I've tried numerous roms and modems that all result in the same result which is muffled voices that i often can't even understand. Seems that its when im talking to iphone users more than anything but its always there. My inspire was great with phone calls and really never had an issue understanding with any phone I've ever owned. Very frustrating and even happens on headset and Bluetooth devices. Any advice, anyone else experience this?

It very well may be a hardware issue. It happened to me on my last SGH. When I got a new phone, I haven't experienced the issue.
Try getting a replacement with whoever you bought the phone from. I had my phone replaced via hardware warranty and not insurance, so I got it for free.

That's probably what I'll try. I bought it over the phone with at&t so I'm sure they will want me to send it in since they aren't selling the sgsII over the counter here in austin (they are pushing the skyrocket). Sucks to be without a phone for a week or so!

You'll keep your current phone until they mail you the replacement. Then you'll pack your old phone into the box and ship it off. Make sure you've flashed back to stock and removed any trace of root because if you don't you'll lose warranty.

It should be pretty easy to make a claim on faulty hardware when you do it online and send it in, I haven't had any issues with call quality or anything so I'd guess it's a hardware issue
also I've done this before, except I did it with insurance claim, and I'm pretty sure they sent it with like FedEx overnight shipping too so you wouldn't really be waiting either

I would rather have a refund than a phone someone already used and broke. I buy new, I expect new.
refurbs are often times just a new phone that they cannot sell as new because it was opened. No scratches or damages but its still new.
Refurbished phones right now are basically still new phones. Most of the refurbished phones were phones bought brand new and returned within the 30 day free-exchange period. Some people didnt like it and a lot of people returned it for the Skyrocket... so AT&T has to resell the phones as refurbished even though there was nothing wrong with it at all. So now is the time to buy a refurbished phone.
I got my Dad one last week and he got it on Thursday. Its completely brand new. Not a scratch or anything on it. He got it for $9.99 and its perfect.
of all the refurbs I ever received from AT&T, all of them looked new.
I was up to 4 Captivate refurbs last year and they all looked brand new.
Interesting, not having any call issues with my phone.

International version?

There is someone local selling an unlocked international version on the GS2, with the physical button on the bottom. Is there any differences in the software between this and the TMO version? If I were to buy this, can I flash and root as if I were using the standard GS2?
thanks.
If that is the international version (namely i9100) then that is the standard sgs2. It had more development going on than the other versions of it.

I saw that, and read an article that kept talking about the Nexus 7. I had a G2X that a sold and picked up a Nexus S for $165. I don't like this damn phone, so I'll be promptly selling and using the profit for a top tier phone!
Does the S2 feel like the standard cheap Samsung while holding it? Or does it actually have some weight to it? Coming from LG's and HTC's, those things are heavy.
EDIT: The Galaxy Nexus is supposedly available again next week.

For me it is decent enough to look at and doesn't feel cheap even though it's light weight. Hmmm, you should decide whether you want a fast update (GNex) or better hardware buy slow update (Sgs2). Sgs2 is a great phone but samsung has the habit of updating a device for a year and then stop (not 1 year but you get the point). If i had the chance i would swap my sgs2 for GNex but i'm in doubt since i am a heavy user and i use my phone for gaming. Also, GNex lacks External SD card which is a No No for me.

I don't really care for the OTA's, I'll flash whoever put together a flashable version of whatever OTA is released...
I actually ordered a G. Skill 32gb SDHC Class 10 from newegg.com for my G2X, which I don't have anymore, now with the Nexus S, I have no use for the card! The SD write speeds on this phone are HORRIBLE, about 800k/sec!!!
I'm a fan of the non-carrier branded devices for some reason. My G2X had LG on the top instead of the traditional T-Mobile, and the screen hue while turned off was a brownish color instead of a blueish-gray that the TMO version had. I had one of each G2X's and in comparison, the screen for the LG branded was much more vibrant.
Now I have the Nexus S, again no branding, which is another reason why I want the Galaxy Nexus.
I'm confused, to say the least!
Well, if you don't care about updates then go for the international sgs2 (i9100). Great specs and still one of the best phone in the market.

The S3 is WAY to overpriced, I would just get that, but not willing to dish out around $500 for a non contracted phone.
Oh, another reason to stay away from the carrier branded for me, is that they won't get IMEI/ESN locked by which ever carrier!

Huh? i don't really care to receive Jelly Bean on the Nexus S, the DPI is atrocious on this phone. That, mixed with the screen type don't equal out to a good display. My G2X looked WAY better than this device.
The S2 will get a good Jelly Bean port before the Nexus S will, I'm sure of that.

Verizon Tech Support giving away Rezounds

a buddy of mine told me that if you currently own a tbolt and call Verizon Wireless complaining about certain issues, they replace it with a Rezound. Has anyone heard anything about this?
If you get your Thunderbolt replaced for valid insurance purposes, they will replace it with a rezound since most, but not all, Verizon stores are out of Thunderbolts.
Some times, though, you won't be offered a rezound. Rather, you may get offered a LG Revolution... which sucks.
There is a post about it here:

Same here. When I talked to the Rep at Asurion about my phone (sucky data connection) I hinted about the rezoned replacement. He told me that they have plenty of TBs around. Which is fine, I like the TB when it's working, with a good ROM it doesn't really matter what the phone is to me.

I think he's talking about my phone being replaced under the phone insurance program (Asurion). This is my 3rd TB from them so I think it's paid off. It's the first phone I bought insurance on and I'm glad I did. Having to cough up several hundred dollars for a new phone would suck.
Edit: Looks like they are out of refurbs at Asurion. I got a brand spanking new TB yesterday. It works beautifully (for now) I'm going to let it sit stock for a few days to make sure but then Jester's ICS will be on there in no time.

The Rezound. Personal preference, but the big part for me is the SD card. Yes, the Nexus has a slightly larger screen, and is, well, a Nexus device, but overall I just really have liked HTC's devices.

Anybody Coming back from Samsung Note 2

Just curious I just returned my Samsung Galaxy note II and am back to the Evo 3D.
It feels good!
Just curious if anybody else was thinking of upgrading or has and is thinking about coming back to the 3D or perhaps im insane.
First you have to explain to the jury, why you did such a thing. Then after careful deliberation, we will discuss the matter at hand.
I don't think you're insane at all. That damn thing is WAY too big. Now, if you were coming back from ann S3 I would definitely think you are insane. lol

I also figured the url embedded the code into it so I just use that now instead of going to the homepage and typing it in manually.
I also used that number with the 800 number one year because I wanted to make sure my plan didn't change but the operators said that the upgrades don't change plans. (Wanted to keep 6 line family plan intact )
Just got an update. That link now has the Sprint Galaxy Note 2 for $249.99 tax free for New and Upgrades. I have been waiting for it but still 50/50 because I know the 3D has a new lease on life due to the AOSP breakthroughs recently from Agrabren and CG.

I don't think you're insane at all. That damn thing is WAY too big. Now, if you were coming back from ann S3 I would definitely think you are insane. lol

I debated the size before buying mine but man, I don't regret getting it at all, especially now that they released the multi-window update.
Going back to my EVO 3D isn't gonna happen here. In fact, my wife wants to take my EVO 3D but I am contemplating getting her a S3 instead because the EVO seems so small now lol.

I got my phone yesterday. I am absolutely loving it. It's so light & thin. Been on it almost non stop and barely put a dent in my battery. I would pay $700 for another one, &actually am. Buying one for my mom for Christmas.
I would recommend it, plus I can actually use my data &have 4g unlike sprint.
