Prime - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Just saw this device today and cpw and it looked amazing
Only downsides were the price and the bezel has a thick edge.....looks little too thick for my liking but that's maybe what makes it so thin.
Still looked amazingly thin, congrates to all that have it.

Hi,
Still,a great piece of kit.

Thanks it is a great device. I went into a Bestbuy today to play with the 2012 iPad (amazing screen, no joke). After playing around with the iPad and testing it out I found myself walking a few feet over to the Transformer Prime they had on display and playing with it for 10 minutes, even though I have one at home (and have had for months).
Hell, I was tempted to buy another one (no sarcasm). It is just a really nice looking piece of hardware and seeing it displaying the water-glass live wallpaper with widgets on it just made if feel much more useful than the iPad with its rows of icons.

This was my first tablet purchase and I've been through hell and back and I'm still going through hell and back. My third unit has been sent for RMA repair, and since my first 2 never came back working I don't have much confidence that this third one will ever come back fully working. Right before I sent it back the screen started to go bad and dead pixels started to show up. I hope at LEAST the tech that works on notices this and take care of that as well.
In the end, if this tablet actually worked like it was supposed to, it would have been the BEST gadget experience I've had in the last few years. If I never want to use my $300 Sennheiser bluetooth headphones while using the wifi connection I would be just fine. BUT I DO. Oh well, I ramble a bit so sorry. I feel though you guys are the only ones that can feel my pain since most of you are going through the same thing.

Coming from an A500 and my first week as a Prime owner, the bezel sure is handy. It creates just enough for your fingers to hold the device up. I'm an all natural guy and really like the device naked without any sleeve or case when docking in and out.

I just wish it was cheaper......
£400 would be good, as it would be a alternative to apple....
but at £500 people would, still walk out with a ipad, which is a shame :-(

I don't know if that is true.
I was seriously considering buying the new iPad which is why I went into Bestbuy to check it out. However I got to thinking.. I use my tablet often while traveling and since I don't always have access to the internet I like to load movies up onto my tablets microSD card.
For $530 I have a 64GB Asus Transformer Prime, 32GB built in, and a $30 32GB card I got off Amazon.
If I went with the $500 iPad, I would forever be stuck with 16GB, which is about 5GB too small for me to take all the shows and movies with me that I currently have loaded onto my Prime's microSD card.
People who don't use their tablet like I use mine won't care and will probably buy a new iPad, but really the Transformer Prime is an amazing tablet, performs just as well as the iPad, does practically all of the exact same things yet comes with 2x the storage for the same price.
(I really really wanted to make myself buy the new iPad.. I had my credit card out.... but I just couldn't make myself not walk away)

Do you find the need to have a tablet?

If so what tablet do you have or will buy next? I am not sure if I would need a tablet, as the only mere reason why I would probably need a tablet is reading pdf ebooks with layouts and graphics. Other than that the S2 does it or my laptop does.

Only after reading XDA posts .

What sort of tablet an ecstasy tablet (joke)
No seriously whenever i have the cash im gonna be getting an ASUS Eee Pad Transformer, having read extensive tablet reviews this appears to be the best, i love the fact that if your battery is about to die you just attach the tablet to the keyboard and you can get another 9 hours battery life.
Plus it runs Android Honeycomb which looks great.
Thing is inasmuch as I would want to have a tablet. I may later on find myself not using it because of the S2 and my laptop. I can pretty much do almost everything with.these two gadgets. So I am confused as of the moment.

No matter how hard I try, I just can't find a good enough reason to get a tablet... Between the netbook, a couple of e-book readers and the GS2 (HD2 before that, which I've kept anyway) I think I'm rather comprehensively covered
Tablets for me are supposed to be a midpoint between a phone and a laptop. I mean honestly, surfing on the s2 really isn't the most enjoyable thing (screenwise) and you can't bust out your laptop when you're say, commuting to the office to check <insert site here>.
My girlfriend seems to enjoy her tab more that she actually stopped using her netbook. Its a galaxy tab if you're curious.

Rather than me bringing my laptop with me when i travel bringing a tablet would be a lot easier given the size.
I don't have a laptop or netbook, so a tablet is perfect for me. I mainly use it for armchair browsing, and I'm also a bit of a film freak, so it's great having the IMDB app at my fingertips when I'm watching a film and thinking "Who the hell is that guy and what have I seen him in before??"
I've got a Galaxy Tab (7"), so obviously it doesn't do anything that my phone can't do, but the 7" screen alone makes it worthwhile. I also much prefer the Kindle app on the bigger screen. It just makes more sense.
If I did have a netbook (preferable to a laptop for just grabbing and playing with), I wouldn't have the tab, but since I don't then I'm really glad I've got it.
As soon as the "Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi white" is available here for a reasonable (!!) price I'll get it asap.

I bought an Acer Iconica A500 while visiting the States, was quite cheap c.t the UK, $480 from BestBuy.... found it more powerful than any IPad.... better expandability.... better resolution and cameras than IPad2... can just copy any avi/mkv through my PC and it just plays directly.... except looks, not the sexiest looking machines c.t to...say the fruit... in the first few days I installed every app I could get... emulators.... could even get my wiimote to work with it (unfortunately, the SGS2 bluetooth stack doesn't work with it)..
BUT, once the novelty wore off, I found I barely used it!!!... for (VERY) casual browsing, I would just pick up my GalaxyS2... for anything more, still prefer a laptop... so, it mostly lay their gathering dust.
Then another gadget freak in the office just HAD to buy an Ipad2, so he was selling his old IPad original... I bought if for REALLY cheap... brought it home... and my wife who wouldnt touch the acer... has taken total ownership.... and when she isn't using it, my son watches cartoons on youtube... the two of them almost exclusively use it.... I still don't REALLY find them that useful.
I think, what I'm trying to say is, you won't really know until you get one if it fits you!!!....
Do look at the Acer A500 though... from all the reviews I had read, it was almost neck to neck with the Asus transformer for about a 100 bucks less...

Nice and very detailed. Exactly what I have been thinking. If ever I buy a tablet I should have a planned and scheduled resell.
I used to have one of those cheap Apad or Iped android tablet that is 7 inches with resistive screen. Only around 80 dollars. I would usually carry it with me always and surf at the free wifi at the malls. And I just woke up one morning that I realize I am tires from carrying that.thing with me all.the time.

What do you guys think of the Amazon Fire and Nook tablet.

What do you guys think of the Amazon Fire and Nook tablet? I've almost jumped on a Nook Color a couple times just cause of the price. I think both are priced to sell tons and probably are going to embarrass the "real" android tablets in terms of quantity sold.
I'm leaning towards the Nook Tablet just because of the better specs microphone(I love my voice search) and SD card. Also word on the street is that the bootloader and boot from SD is unchanged from the original Nook Color.
My only real worry about both of them is a lack of cameras, but I already have lots of cameras on my Evo 3D anyways.
Hi! The Fire looks really nice and amazon's ecosystem will probably be awesome. But without removable media/storage, custom roms are going to be a pain to load and test.
Im going for the fire because i have a ton of their "free app of the day" apps and their market actually has a decent selection. That and its $50 less.
Can they make telephone calls?
No, they are not made to make telephone calls. I'm sure you can probably get an app to use the Wifi to make calls but you can't load your SIM card and make phone calls with your cell #. There's always like Tango or Skype. You can probably use Groove IP with Google Voice to make calls.

Drew, you've answered pretty much every question yourself...
Get the Nook.
It'll CRUSH the Amazon tablet in the short run, the long run, and the whatever run.
The original NC has unparalleled dev support, and this one will be no different.
Bet your ass it'll have ICS ported for it ASAP.
(Install the Amazon Market on that Nook Tablet as soon as you have it rooted (so, like Day One....) and laugh every morning as you get ANOTHER 'Free App of the Day' from Amazon on your Nook.)
<<work in progress>>
I definitely want a tablet of some sort soon. I have a tablet PC that makes school a dream. If I can get a tablet that you can use an inductive stylus, or even a really amazing capacitive stylus I might be able to settle for that, but it would have to be pretty amazing to replace the PC. Then I would just get a PC laptop that is cheap I could completely replace the tablet PC. I honestly believe we are not too far off from seeing the Android and iPad tablets replace laptops if they continue to pack more power and the software replaces the laptops software.
The price of these tablets are so dirt cheap, the only thing that will keep them from expanding into what laptops are today is the types of software available for the tablets.
I will always prefer the tablet that has at least a ten inch screen. The 7 inch is too small. The evo 3D is an example of the power even micro architecture can accomplish, so moving from a 4.3 inch screen to 7 inch isn't enough to make me put down my evo for a few minutes to use the tablet. Now, a ten inch + screen would be different.
I 2nd the nook. It is only 50 more. And it is worth it.

You also get $25 off the Nook if you are a B&N member. If you aren't then you can get the membership for $25 and take advantage of all the deals. I just used 2x25% off coupons today + 10% extra with my membership. Very good deals.

Around the holidays it seems like weekly, but during the off season it's a monthly thing. The lowest coupon I've ever gotten was 10% and the highest was 40% off. Then you get your member discount as well. So on the lowest side its 20% off.
I had the nook, it's a incredible little thing with a lot of bang for the buck. I still have my other tablets and all they are to me are web surfing/ebook extensions. The apps are on the iPad, the openness is in android, non of them fits a all in one item as a laptop/desktop. I'm waiting for windows to come out for these tablets and the new kal-el tablets. Transformer will be the first, unless it's rootable, I will skip it...and go else where. For you, the nook hands down will be a winner..price, performance and most important...developer support.

Win 8 tablets are a while off, I do think they are going to be a real contender in the tablet wars.
The transformer prime is going to be sweet but at twice the price, and the larger size it would make more sense to just get a laptop. I already have two so a third would be a waste.
I think the $150-$250 price point is the sweet spot for tablets. Especially for something I'm going to carry around and could get easily get smashed.
BTW I'm talking about the new nook tablet, it sounded like you were referring to the old nook color. Which even though it was alright it really couldn't be as competitive as it needed. The new one is baddass enough to be really good.

Off to Texas....

Well, I finally decided to contact Asus on the phone. They're pretty much clueless on what is going on. They are reading from a book or outline on what to say or ask it seems. Just to please them I did whatever is they asked. All the way down to a factory reset. I got my RMA and who the heck knows what will happen. I left them a very detailed message in the box, which I took several pictures of while I was packing it.
I actually may just go out and buy another tablet some where to tide me over, but haven't the slightest of what to get. I was thinking Samsung 10inch but jeeez they still are on Honeycomb. How is that?

Grab a Moto Xoom. They are less than $250.00 at Staples and already have ICS OTA. It doesn't have the same screen resolution your Prime has and only a Tegra 2 processor but it will certainly hold you over...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1472533
I picked up a Samsung Galaxy 10 tablet and I have to say for the price and a dual processor I'm pretty impressed. There was zero screen bleed when I turned it on, and guess what, all functions and features were working out of the box! I also like the DUAL speaker placement on the Samsung, they are on each side and not on the back AWAY from you. Oh well, nothing I can do now but if Asus can't provide a complete working tablet with my Bluetooth headphones working AND my wifi normal then I'll want a full refund and end up with this Samsung for now. I've been beating on this Samsung for at least 2 hours and not one reboot or glitch yet. Still running 3.2 and no ICS yet. I can't wait for some of these other companies to start making tegra 3 chips and hi-res screen. If the quality is like what this Samsung is I'll never look at Asus again, sorry.
I had the Galaxy Tab 10.1 before i got the Prime. IMO the Prime is much better than the Galaxy.
where in texas is your prime going? If its anywhere near sugar land I would want to stop by with my prime and have them see if they can fix my gps issues.

I've had two G-Tabs, a U.S. Wi-Fi and a UK 3G. They're built like tanks. I dropped it down a flight of carpeted stairs in nothing but its slip case and it wasn't even phased. I accidentally poured water in to its media dock while it was connected and it worked fine once it dried out. I can’t count how many times it hit the ground on airplanes and at airports and it still looks new. Compared to the Zoom and Jetstream it has the best Wi-Fi and GPS and supports the 5GHz band. The most impressive thing about the G-Tab is that it just works - the same way, every time. The display is really impressive. The design was changed in October and the new displays have better contrast and less in-your-face color saturation. There are also three temperature settings from warm to cool. "Official" ICS is supposed to be available Q1 but CM9's available and the only thing not working is the camera. Its got a robust dev community and some pretty impressive (speed wise) 3.2 ROMs and kernels available. 1080P's a bust because of Teg2 not supporting NEON but 720P works decently with the right player. On the downside, its Teg2, has no ports so you'll have to buy (expensive) accessories, and they're still expensive. Costco's got the 16GB for $389 in-store only. By buying it there, you can play with it for 90 days and return it if you don't like it or if something better comes along.
The Toshiba A200 with the same TI SoC and GPU as the GN is out in the UK and will be released this month in Canada as the Excite. I played with a friend’s and it's much smoother than Teg2 and the display is gorgeous. It's so thin and light it makes the G-Tab feel bulky. It's pricey though. It looks like the first Teg3 tablet to be actually available for sale will be the HTC Vertex (formerly Quattro) in March. The announcement will be made at a HTC press conference at MWC on the 27th. Hopefully it'll be sold Wi-Fi only and direct (and in the U.S.) and not tied to a carrier the way the Jetstream was. I had a Jetstream for a while and liked it but it weighed a ton and was too big to hold comfortably. I'd consider an HTC tablet, the Jetstream was extremely well built and even had a discrete subwoofer. Sense on a tablet added a lot of cool features too.
Good luck.

EDIT:
Nothing beats a (working) Prime.
Just kidding. Assuming the TF700, A700, and Vertex are solid, from that point forward, it's stupid for anyone to buy a first-gen tablet. The same could be said for the Prime if they weren't just so damn inconsistent.

Its cool. Just wanted to mess with ya on that post. But yes, from now on, on any new device, I will wait for a while and see how things turn out with it. I got lucky with the Prime, but not going to take anymore high dollar risks..lmfao. I seriously see me keeping Prime for a long time. Only thing that might entice me is once kal El/Wayne/tegra4 chipset comes out towards later or end of the year. I used Ipad for almost 2 yrs. Without really wanting another device. So I can easily see the same or longer with my Prime. We haven't even scratched the surface of the full potential or power of Tegra3 yet.
Good luck. Keep on the repair centers **ses, they've had my unit for almost a month. I called again today and no one knows why it's still there, worse yet; it hadn't been worked on at all.

I'm sorry to say that when Samsung does come out with their tegra 3, gorilla glass, and all that I'll be grabbing one of those right away. Of course the current Galaxy tab can't compete with the Prime, but right now I'd take Samsung's quality control right now. I love my Prime, trust me, was an awesome tablet and I have no idea how long it will be RMA'ed for.
Just an update, I pmed Gary Key and I now have a replacement tf201. It works exactly as advertised and I couldn't be happier! GPS locks on 10 of 12 sats in my house with wifi off!
Good luck with yours! I hope you get the same end result without the same hassle.

Yup, just dropped off mine at that facility today. Hopefully it'll be quick.

Should I get a TP

So I've been wanting a tablet for a while and I missed the chance to get a TP when the fire sale happened. My dad just bought a Transformer Prime and that's pretty sweet but I don't want to shell out $600. So is this a good buy? Is it worth the $250-$300?

Well, ask yourself this. Do you not want ANY issues? If so then no it's not worth it. I enjoy mine very much, but I have pretty much made the issues with the TP part of my normal usage routine. Like when it dies ( uh oh, sometimes doesn't like to come back on for a while), or when I reboot I have to re setup my wifi network and sometimes it just decides it doesn't want to do the whole auto rotate for me. However the apps run smooth, sound is great ( when the screen is on lol ). Downloading games no problem ( just once again don't let the screen shut off while its downloading sd files ). Oh and no camera unless in webos. So here is my last piece to help u with.
New android tab: 399-700ish
New tp 32gb: about 300
pros: nice size display, bright, loud, very smooth, decent batt life, can connect to many peripherals: wii remote, ps3 controller, mouse, keyboard, etc...
cons: camera only on front, issues with rom i posted up top, no external memory
hope this helps some
I have had my touch pad for almost 2 months, with cm on it for almost as long. The ONLY problem I've had with it is the camera not working.
I've had none of the problems the above user has. Works great, and is only getting better. And $299 is a bit steep. My 32 gig with case and speed charger was $225 shipped
So if I could buy one around $200 with accessories its a good deal?

Good luck getting a 32 with accessories for $200. I'm letting one of mine go for $280 plus shipping with touchstone and keyboard. But mine has carbon fiber wrap and two used cases. Still thinking about listing on eBay cause it should fetch $300 easy cause the wrap got put on right after open so its about as new looking as possible.

Im a noob (first android rooted phone in november) and i love my $180 16gb TP. Im running 30-31 AOKP and the ONLY issues are front camera and having to turn on and off the wifi (quick settings double tap) when coming out of sleep or switching locations.
For the price the only other options are the kindle fire and nook. and those dont support HD video or even ui hardware acceleration. You would have to spend $300 for a used/reconditioned true ICS tablet with the same features and battery life.
The TouchPad is awesome in my opinion. No real issues running android except the camera and microphone, but that could come to us down the road. Everything else runs well. If you havent used webOS, you may even like that OS better. The ONLY downside to webOS is the lack of apps. But if you dont even use that many apps, you wont even notice. Running both operating systems at the same time is nice.
As far as pricing, a 16gb version, you might be able to get for $200 with one or two of the following: case, wall charger, screen protectors. Add a touchstone charger to it and it will be maybe $50 more. If you get a 32GB version, add another $30 or so. I got my 32 GB TouchPad for $230 off of ebay and it came with a case and wall charger. I'm planning on getting a touchstone charger eventually.

Have you even seen it and know what it does? Its a charger that sits on a table/desk/whatever, and you just sit your Touchpad on it and it charges. No plugging in cables to charge. It also acts as an adjustable stand. This is one of the best accessories Palm started with their webOS phones. I loved the Touchstone for the Palm Pre Plus. Can't wait to use one with my TouchPad.

Is it a 16 gig or 32 gig? A 16 gig is a good deal, a 32 gig is a great deal! I recently got a 32 gig for 200 with case and touchstone dock.
$200-250 seems to be price point for a 32GB model.
Ha got my 32gb model for 160 on Craigslist with no problems :-D
I'm living on a yellow submarine
I was browsing ebay last week and it seems that the 32 gig is selling for the same price or cheaper than the 16 gig. I was kind of surprised tbh.
I just got a 32gb off Craigslist for 175 with a case. Its brand spanking new barley used. Soon as cm9 is fixed it will be amazing

well great deal for that if it is a 32 gb

I honestly don't think any model of TP is worth over $200 used. Considering the plethora of tablets that are coming out in coming months at increasingly reduced prices, the TP is moving the way of the dinosaur quickly.

Not even close to becoming a dinosaur. The touchpad runs as good if not better then those that have ics on them for a fraction of the price. $200 for a dual boot tablet if a fantastic deal.

New Tablet

I'm thinking about getting a tablet for about 300 bucks, I dont want to really spend much more than that. Do you guys suggest the Prime or the TF300? Is there any other I should look at for this price range that have a quad core w/ microsd and hdmi? I was looking at maybe the refurbs on newegg, does anyone have experience with their refurbs? Thanks for any suggestions.

I honestly wouldn't recommend it, I'd say the least to go for a Nexus 7. This thread doesn't necessarily need to be a other long winded rant about the dreadful i/o speeds that creates lag coupled with the horrible wifi problems that come along with the aluminium back cover which can be solved using a stretch of aluminium foil pasted on your prime. Buttttttt! If typing is your kind of thing the Transformer series as a whole does seem to be the best package although there are other alternatives like a N7 or your phone coupled with a blue tooth keyboard
Honestly the Transformer Prime is a damn good tablet....if you get one of the later versions where Asus 'fixed' a few things. My WiFi isn't terrible. I can get nearly full bars all around my house which is decently sized with an excessive amount of walls. I even get service through the wet-wall (the one with all the pipes for the toilets and such) and 2 other normal walls. I/O isn't truly terrible if you don't use stock kernels. Asus fudged an amazingly powerful tablet. People that use my Prime always say "I can see why you paid $500 for that thing. It's AWESOME!". But it's up to you man. The N7 is great but has it's issues too (maybe Asus fudged another tab? who knows).
Well.. Not to say that everyone is having a bad experience with the Prime but if you're going to make a purchase, no one can say for sure what you're in stall for

Good assessment. I have an early S/N Prime (STOCK - NOT ROOTED or UNLOCKED) and it still WOW's people who play with it. Mine has decent WiFi, I can stream music from my house to my detached garage (about 40 feet from the house) with no problems. Every device will have problems; it's just the nature of the technology right now. My wife's iPad has had some issues connecting and staying connected to our network at home (old Linksys router) so maybe a lot of WiFi problems people reported right after the Primes launch was due to older wireless routers being used. Is the Prime perfect? No but it is still one of the fastest tablets so far. I received the dock this Christmas and it truly "TRANSFORMS" the whole user experience. I'm not a big fan of touchscreen keyboards so the dock was a must when I was considering a device like this. Plus the extra battery, full size USB port and full size SD card port on the keyboard set the Asus Transformer line apart from the competition IMHO. I recommend the Prime all the time.
I have to ask, aren't the nexus 7s made by Asus? I don't quite understand why you'd tell someone not to buy a prime because Asus sucks and then suggest to buy a nexus 7 if they are both manufactured by Asus.
I have had my prime since Christmas. I bought it used on swappa and at first was not impressed as it came with CM10 and on ics firmware. I did the nvflash and updated it to jellybean and loaded hairybean. I absolutely love this thing. It's fast, responsive, and all around not what people complain about on here. Did I just get a good one? Am I not as picky as other people? I don't understand what the problem is. I guess it could be worse, you could have bought a Samsung galaxy tab and not had a sd slot or jellybean. The prime blows it out of the water. I have also done side by side with ipad2 and the prime out performs it as well.
End rant. Just my 2 cents.
