[Q] Root - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

If I root my AT&T SGH-i717 Note, will this affect the ability to upgrade to ICS when it is released by either Samsung or AT&T, whichever the case may be? I could not find this thread. Thanks.

You can always restore back to stock then re root

As Kevin said. It's best to flash back to stock and then do the over the air update then re root.
My question is if rooted and running stock ROM and kernelwell the phone receive the update?
Sent from my Samsung Phablet!

I think it would because the saurom rom has update disabled but you asked about stock.
All root does is let you change stuff your not supposed to have access to.
A rom re writes everything.
So my guess on this is yes

I don't think root would prevent you from receiving an OTA update, but if you have CWR, you may have to revert to the stock recovery for the OTA update to install. I may be mistaken so if anyone knows for sure, please chime in.
Thanks!

I too would like to know this, phone is very laggy. Hoping to close all the crapware.

How to get ICS directly from Google when rooted/custom Rom?

If I want the official update instead of flashing something, would I have to go back to stock Rom and/or unroot?
I've deleted bloatware and have frozen a few things, what should I do to ensure I'd get the latest update?
Thanks

there won't be an update until at least sometime next year I wouldn't worry for a while.
The only phone get ICS directly from Google is Galaxy Nexus (and maybe Galaxy S). We have to get update from AT&T who must get update (and sit on it) from Samsung who get the ICS source from Google then make a ROM out of it.
So, official ICS for i777 is probably 6 months away. If you have custom ROMs, you won't be able to upgrade via the official process. If you rooted, you may or may not be able upgrade successfully either (it depends how much AT&T/samsung hates you).
But, I'm pretty sure official ICS ROM will be leaked months before AT&T release it. You can then download the flash to that instead of waiting for AT&T to release it. When you do that, rooted or custom ROM does not matter since it will wipe your phone clean.
The only benefit of waiting for official release is that the upgrade process won't wipe your phone clean. You get to keep all your settings and apps.

to answer your question, no one can be 100% sure if you will get the OTA update even if you're still running the stock rom while rooted. It should work but it may not.
Then as everyone else said, I wouldn't worry about it at this point. Our i777 has not been guaranteed an ICS update and even if it is getting it, it wont be for a long time. Long enough not to worry about that question at this point in time.

[Q] WHat happens when OTA ICS comes from ATT if I use leak with root

Been wondering what will happen if and when ATT decides to upgrade us all to ICS if I am currently using the leaked ICS and have the phone rooted? WIll it just be a case of where I do not receive the update because of root? Should I unroot?
If I continue with the rooted ICS leak, will I have to flash the phone back to stock using Odin, and after doing that will I automatically receive the ATT update?
I just wan't to be sure that I dont miss out on the ATT ICS upgrade because I am using leak with root.
Yes, I am a bit new to this , so I don't know all the ins and outs of how upgrades are pushed by ATT to our devices yet.
I think you're supposed to unroot or else things could be messed up while updating. Though I could be wrong. It's what I'm planning

Samsung phones aren't generally pushed through an ota update, official updates are done with a Samsung program called kies. Which has a lot of checks it does before it flashes anything. You'll probably have to go back to unrooted gingerbread to update officially...
That being said.... This is xda we'll most likely get a few more leaks before the official update, and after the official is dropped you can bet there will be a rooted, deodexed, and zip aligned, cwm or Odin flashable version within hours.
I have never bothered with official firmware on any phone.
Thanks for the info ..!
I wouldn't worry about the OTA update unless you want a bloated ICS.
Wait for the devs to release an improved, bloat-free rom.

So we can remove the AT&T update app to not receive OTA updates?

Unroot from stock gingerbread

Search has only brought up users unrooting from CM or other versions, sorry if this has been covered... long story short, I rooted my wife's GNote when she first got it while on original firmware at the time of release and she hasnt been interested in flashing a custom rom. She recieved a message from ATT stating that an upgrade to JB was available via Kies. Im assuming since the device is rooted I can't upgrade it that way so im hoping someone can provide with the link to unroot from gingerbread. Also, would like to unroot it for the simple fact that Time Warner Cable's live TV app detects if the phone is rooted and its a pain to keep up with all the new detect methods with their updates..any help would be appreciated... thanks

I believe this is the method you are looking for.

Why unroot when you can flash the stock ROM?
The new rom will flash over your gingerbred and leave it unrooted jb, with all your apps and data intact. Root wasn't an issue.

Problem "unfreezing" apps

Hi.
I got a Samsung Galaxy Nexus with Android 4.3
Since i never really used Google Now, i used Root Uninstaller/Uninstaller Pro to "freeze" those apps.
Now, when i'm trying to get the OTA update on my SGN, it fails.
I used this app to freeze with
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rootuninstaller.free
I suspect it has somehting to do with the apps being frozen.
My problem is, that Uninstaller Pro can't unfreeze the apps, when i try to do so, the problem just locks, and nothing happens.
Anyone got a suggestion on how to proceed so i can update my phone ?
I'm not scared of using ADB.
Best regards!
It is likely that the ota won't work as you are rooted, return to unrooted stock if that's what you prefer, I doubt simply unfreezing apps will help much.
If what you want is a rooted stock (most up to date) ROM then consider a custom one as I'm sure someone has or will make one shortly, otherwise go back to stock, take the ota, the reroot. Afterall its a nexus, rooting is quick and easy

When i went from 4.2.2 to 4.3 i had no problems with OTA update even though i was rooted.
And i never had problems with updating rooted roms before. But perhaps something has changed in 4.3 that i don't know of

[Q]Want to go back to completely stock TW, don't know how though...

Okay guys so I got my S4 for Christmas as an upgrade from an S3. I love it. Its a beast and it is just amazing. Here's my problem, after a bunch of head scratching and reading, I finally found out how I was supposed to root it while running the latest jail cell of an update, MK2. The only thing I did to my phone is root it. No custom recovery or anything. Now that the android 4.4.2 update is coming soon, I really want to update to it, but obviously I can't just take the OTA when it comes out, so I need to go back to stock, no root, nothing, the thing is I have no idea how to safely do it and I have very bad dyslexia so keeping track of all the threads that tell me what to do is impossible for me. Can someone please give me a simple step by step on how to do go back to stock? And where I can get the firmware from?

My recommendation would be to search the Samsung website for an MK2 Odin.tar stock firmware image for your s4. If you can't find it there then I recommend looking on XDA for a no data wipe MK2 image. Once the OTA hits for 4.4.2 touchwiz KitKat I recommend you wait for the devs to find a root exploit for it. Or if you don't mind spending a few bucks you could buy super su pro and enable root survival mode and it keeps root over an ota. But I'll see if I can link you to a non data wipe stock MK2 image.

Here are the stock MK2 images just in case. There are full data wipes and no data wipes available. Hope I was able to help!

Please understand that currently there is no way to root KitKat on bootloader locked devices.
Yes, you can restore a no-wipe MK2 ROM and return to stock, then take the 4.4 update when it's rolled out, but you may be stuck on stock for good if you do that.
