Dear XDA-members,
I am a noob atrix 4g user and I have much questions. I think answers will be useful for all newbies.
1)How can I update my atrix 4g ( now Android 2.2.2 and unlocked bootloader) to latest version?
2)Can I use over air update just from settings to update or not?
3)Are there any other safe ways to upgrade or flash a custom ROM?
4)Are there any guides for noobs?
5)What I should never do if I don't want to get bricked?
6)I am interested in any information about atrix 4g, Android , hardware and etc.

1 & 2. You could probably update by going in settings but I'm not sure if its safe to. Ask someone who knows or you'll brick your device
3. I use clockworkmod recovery and its pretty safe as long as you follow dev instructions
4. Check this thread out its for noob atrix users. It has all the information you need: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154600
5. If you don't follow instructions
6. Again check noob guide and use search in xda to find more stuff

Ok guys so ive just bought a uk orange branded hero, and i dont have a clue about android or linux for that matter, so i hope you guys could answer a few questions for me, ive looked at the stickys in the android development section, and now im more confused than before lol
1) What is rooting? and what is the process ment to achieve?
2) like i said i have a uk orange branded hero, now what is the process i need to do before i can start flashing roms? it seems a little more complicated that just flashing hspl like am used to lol
root is the system administrator of a unix system. you might wanna google that if you don't know what it is.
depending on your fastboot version you need to flash the custom recovery image, from there on it is a piece of cake. if you don't need to downgrade your system then flashing the custom recovery is also a piece of cake.

My intention is to give balanced advice to all those who intend to modify their new Android.
Ask yourselves, what do you intend to do with root access, if you want your phone to do all simple tasks, no need to root. I would say get familiar with new OS before deciding "Root Way."

Rooting is the process of gaining full system access to your device. This has pros and cons (you can modify anything and really tweak the guts of your system...but you can also truely fubar the whole thing a lot easier too). If you don't have a need to root, I generally advise against it.
Flashing custom ROMs are an unsupported method of customization...but it, like rooting, has some potential gains. Some ROMS give more speed, some ROMs include more features that you may or may not want. Flashing ROMs are the reasons most people root (as to flash the ROM, you need root access)
Thanx for all your help guys, i read all that info and spent the last 2 days learning lol 2day i sucsessfully downgraded my rom, routed and flashed modaco 2.9
Goodlad!
Excellent. Now please tell our forum members which road you drove to get to root, so that someone with same enthusiam can also do same. You dont have to write whole page, just majot points and references or links.
Thanks.
Heloo..Everyone!
been reading some of the threads on how to root, install ROM and backed-up this phone...
but can anybody please provide direct walkthroughs for this specific version and model...
It's a bit complex for so many noobs out there...
Having a hard time to go through the steps...I'm confused if:
1) I'd go for back-up first before I downgrade my FW to V10b (which is the next best FW available for downgrade)
2)I'd need to downgrade first then the rest....
3) I'd need to ROOT first before anything else...
Please help!..I really need some step-by-step walkthrough guide for this...
I'm kindda scared bricking this BABY!
Mga pinoys dyan...baka may makaktulong?! salamat! (Thank you!)
If you ask me, I'd go with the root first part. I'm not sure if there's a one click rooting method for 2.2.1.
I wouldn' really recommend downgrading since I've been reading stuff about P500s getting bricked by KDZ (but im not saying its not reliable) or even LG's own tools. But yes, those tools DO work.
So the summary of this post is to root from 2.2.1, get the custom recovery, then install your favorite rom
EDIT: Do a nandroid backup as soon as you get the custom recovery.
Sorry if I'm double posting, but I have to stress this out.
You have to downgrade to 2.2 Then root
Wow, this is really getting complicated...
I'm really sorry...but does NANDROID differs from custom recovery? I mean are they different programs with different task?...
My head hurts...too many info... (LOL )
but seriously....please enlighten me
It's not really complicated. It's just that I have this fear of using KDZ Updater. I have never tried it, and never will xD But I think in this case, I think you might need to.

The custom recovery is where you:
- make nandroid backups
- wipe stuff
- flash stuff (to install roms, kernels, stuff)
- do bunch of other stuff
Check these threads:
1. Repos of howtos - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=901247
2. Flash original firmware (which i think is the guide you need to downgrade to 2.2. have this confirmed first ) - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875881
3. Just in case I haven't "fixed your confusion regarding custom roms and stuff Im not really good in explaining, so here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=900905
Thanks Man! really appreciate your help....

Hi there, I am looking for a step by step guide for Bell users who are stock 2.3.4 and looking to root, unlock, change roms etc. The problem is, I'm currently having trouble finding this information. I am coming from a Nexus One, and then a Desire Z, where the process was much easier.
When I search around, I find conflicting ways to do this, with separate instructions for the Bell Atrix vs the other versions. I know we don't have a Bell Atrix section, and I tried searching but couldn't find anything other then this here. Can anyone confirm these are the steps to make this work?
When I figure this out I will write a definitely write a guide for us Bell users. Thanks!
For unlocking, I've seen multiple Bell posts confirming that IHOP (international house of pudding works).
I'm on my phone so I don't have the link handy, but its in the dev section...

First of all, welcome to the community of freedom and awesomeness. LOL.
What version of Android did your Bell Atrix come with?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136261
I don't/can't remember off top of my head if there was anything else I did besides everything explained in Pudding section, but I can confirm that those steps work.
Also, those steps mentioned in the link you provided also looks very similar and should also work.
I think I have those forums bookmarked somewhere on any of my computer, will look it up and see if I can find, I will update this post. Besides, Pudding method works. If you want to try, go ahead.
Cheers!!!

It came with stock 2.2.2, and updated with the OTA last week to the 2.3.4
I'll try the IHOP steps and put together a guide for Bell users if all goes well, thanks!
I've asked the same question too, but I've posted it on a different website. If mods here allow it since it's related to the topic, i've provided a link below. I asked this question just yesterday on Atrixforums and I put up a general list/steps as to how you can get from stock 2.3.4 Bell Atrix to be able to install custom ROMs. Can other people verify if this list is correct?
Thanks

Used this for rooting and confirmed works on my Bell Atrix 2.3.4: briefmobile.com/motorola-atrix-4g-root/
Made a forum thread about the steps to install custom ROMs from stock: atrixforums.com/forum/motorola-atrix-help/5590-q-verifying-steps-installing-custom-rom-onto-my-bell-atrix-2-3-4-rooted.html

EDIT:
I've just done this and I can confirm that this works! I now have an unlocked bootloader.

Just make sure you use the right kernel for the rom.
Well, managed to get rooted, bootloader unlocked, booted into recovery, and flashed Gobstopper 2.3.4 with the fixes. It worked good. Then I figured I'd try CM7...
Didn't work out
Gave me a build.prop error. So I wiped the cache, dalvik, erased data, and did a restore (glad I did that backup).
Now, I seem to be stuck in a boot loop. Luckily, I can still access fastboot, and the recovery and such. I'll try flashing the original IHOP file again in RSD lite
* edit - that worked!
The YouTube video worked perfectly, with the exception of explianing how to root. A user posted that in this very thread, so I guess theres no need to write a guide since those video's are good.
Thanks to all who helped!
Hello,
I have a Motorolla Atrix 4G purchased from Bell. The phone was updated to Gingerbread 2.3.6 already.
I have rooted the phone following this guide http://androidadvices.com/root-motorola-atrix-4g-45141-gingerbread-236-firmware/
Using the moto-fastboot files from here http://www.android-advice.com/file-downloads.php?filename=Atrix_Root_Files
I'm trying to unlock the bootloader so I can ultimately install CM7, but my understanding from this forum sticky http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160408 is that I can't do this without bricking the phone, since I had already done the official gingerbread update.
So if I'm correct, I need to follow this guide... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423
Except that guide and the warning sticky are referring to 2.3.4, not 2.3.6...
Could someone please lend me some knowledgeable input and/or guidance on this? Greatly appreciated, and thank you for your time.
Solved my own question. Phone is unlocked and functioning.
To anyone else who might be helped by this, that guide I posted DOES work for 2.3.6 on Bell... Even says so approx. 13 pages into the discussion (took me awhile to find it).
Just like to thank this community for existing, and all the effort and time you guys spend to not only develop, but to help others by publishing these great resources.
