Hello everyone,
I am a bit confused about the new update, its the first time a major update comes out since i got this first androis device.
I read that they release the updates slowly, to carrier free devices first then its upto the carrier to release it to their customers. Am i correct so far?
If that is the case, i have 3 friends with sgs2's using Orange carrier here in Switzerland, all 3 got their 4.0 updates, some through kies and 1 directly through his phone.
On the other hand i have a carrier-free sgs2 since it was released back in may and i still didnt get the update till today. Unfortunately i dont know anyone else here in Switzerland that is using a carrier-free sgs2 to see if its the same with them.
So my question is, is it normal for a carrier-free sgs2 get the update after carrier specific device?
Thanks in advance
your phone has to be running switz official rom in the first place for kies to work.
europe official ics is out already use odin and flash.
using odin is as official as kies update mind you.
Thanks for the reply atfish,
How do i know what "rom" am i running? for what country or region? because i bought mine off a store here in Switzerland.
I dont know what odin is but i can google it.

Use Sttings -> About Phone to get all the information about what firmware is installed on your phone and yes, you should definitely google for Odin.
Concerning the upgrade to ICS you can wait until your provider (Swisscom like me?) is kind of ready or as said by atifsh use Odin and flash the ICS Open Europe version - this is what I did .
Hello frxp,
I am not part of any carrier, when i got my sgs2 i paid the full price and got it without a contract so i dont have to be locked to just the one since i travel alot.
But the carrier service im using is Sunrise (its a horrible carrier but i get 75% of my final bill as part of my company deal so its waaaay cheaper then anything else), so is the update connected with what carrier im using even if i didnt get the phone with them with a contract?
I mean do i have to wait for Sunrise to upgrade their customers for me to get the update as well even if im using a carrier-free phone?

Locked or unlocked is not the firmware .

No its the original provider of the phone .
Nothing to do with what sim card/network you use .
Choice update via KIES when the phone provider updates .
Or join XDA Developers forum and flash a stock Samsung rom via ODIN as soon as they are released by Samsung .
But you will need to read the FAQS GUIDES and INSTRUCTIONS .

Hello JJegan,
Thanks alot for the thorough reply and will follow it.
I nust have one last question, what does "provider" stands for?
I thought it the provider is the same as the carrier. Like in Switzerland we have Swisscom, Orange and Sunrise.
Provider as in who provided the phone .
Eg my phone was sold by O2 with O2 firmware and codes but its unlocked and i use it on TMobile network . Still has all the same product codes from O2 and Kies would recognize it as an O2 phone for any update .
Not that it actually is as its custom GB rom most definitely not ICS .

hello,
sorry for reopening an old topic, but i still didnt get the update yet and i want some clarification.
please check the image i added with this post.
i still dont get how can the update be out for switzerland for Sim-Free phones and i still didnt get it. im trying not to upgrade manually and do it through the normal update process.
so does anyone know why my phone in particular is not having the upgrade yet when its supposed to be out for the whole country?
thank you in advance

ICS update is not supposed anything .
Its released by the vendor for provider supplied phones up to the vendor when .
Stock Samsung roms are released as and when by Samsung you ask Samsung when .
Nobody on XDA can tell you when Samsung are releasing an update .
Sim Free is nothing to do with updates it simply means the phone is not locked to a network .
Kies has the update when it gets the updated .
You can use CHECKFUS to double check if its on the server .
Alternative is to join XDA DEVELOPERS forum and flash generic stock Samsung firmware yourself .

My SGS2 is PDA:I9100XWKI4, phone:I9100XXKI1, CSC:I9100OXXKI2.
Sam has an empty field for "Country/Carrier", so I have no idea where it belongs. I just know I don't have ICS. It seems to me that they go by PDA.
I can see that there are multiple Open Europe firmwares with 4.0.3:
I9100XXKP8 4.0.3 2011 December I9100OXAKP8
I9100XXKPA 4.0.3 2012 January I9100OXAKPA
I9100XXLP1 4.0.3 2012 January I9100OXALP1
I9100XXLP2 4.0.3 2012 January I9100OXALP2
I9100XXLPH 4.0.3 2012 February I9100OXALPH
I9100XXLPJ 4.0.3 2012 February I9100OXALPJ
Which one may I use? What are the differences amongst them?
Is there a rule here? Is the earliest the best one, because for some reason it goes firs? Or the latest one, because some errors were resolved?
What I understand is that if I use some of there, data will be wiped, so I have to restore backup and reinstall all app? It's a lot of job...I'd like to avoid it.
the last three letter and number tell you the year, month and version released.
L = 2012, P= february, J= 10 the version released.
Always use the latest because it has the most bug fixes and less FC= Forced Closes because of incompatibility in apps.
!st time you go from Gingerbread to ICS, it is recommended you do a comperle wipe, to avoid bootlooping, you will only lose apps that you have download from the market or play store as it is known now. If you have backed everything up to your google account, the back up will be restored when you sign back in to your google account.
After that you can use no wipe versions which will not require you to reinstall your data or apps but some of the apps may require to clear the cache because of how the data was first stored may not work with ICS, the app itself will work fine.

OK, can you please explain why P= february? In mine current I9100XWKI4, I assume that K is 2011, what is W and I?
Then the best option would be:
I9100XXLPJ 4.0.3 2012 February I9100OXALPJ Open Europe
But, CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_LPJ-v5.3-CWM5.zip has problems mounting secure storage, same as LPH. I should wait LPQ or LPS Open Europe then.
What's the best way to upgrade: ODIN, Kies, CWM Recovery?
I'd like to go without wipe first time, to try to keep apps, if it doesn't work, I can do it again as you wrote.

Best is to use this thread by Intratech. What I do is look for a ROM with CSC equal to AUT (= Switzerland) or a Multi-CSC containing AUT (amongst many others). At the present time this results in XXLPQ. The method to use in this case is ODIN or even better Mobile ODIN.
I am not absolutely sure but I think you can interprete the 3 letter/digit version number as follows: 1=1, 2=2, etc, A=10, B=11, ..., Z=35. Then you get:
LPQ = 21.25.26
KJ3 = 20.19.3
From this one can tell that LPQ is kind of > then KJ3 and therefore LPQ is the newer version. This 'rule' is take from this thread by Chainfire and to me it makes quite a lot of sense

F**** its simple if you dont know as the purchaser then all you can do is estimate from the Product Code if its not been changed and that requires a simple search on XDA or via Google .
Or look on Sammobile.com
Or contact the vendor and ask them the question .

hello, can anyone confirm that XXLPJ is safe to flash on my t-mobile uk branded s2? and will it have english language packs and all be ok..
also, when i was a nokia fanboy, we was able to simply change the product code on the device making the nokia software updater think that its a sim free generic device and offer the latest unbranded firmware to flash..
is there anyway to trick kies using such a method, as i hear ICS is out for generic galaxy s2 devices now..
thanx for reading.
1: check if you have i9100 model of GSII
2: get stock firmware of ICS either from sammobile / checkfus downloader / intratech post
3: flash using odin, no need to fix / use kies
4: please search from now on, what you ask is asked 1000+ times
inshort: if you have i9100 and not other variant like i9100G.......
yes you can flash that firmware but its old leaked version. there are many newer official version out!

Of course I have gt-i9100. Lol. you think I'm dumb or something..
You mentioned its an old version leaked? Could you at least link me a newer version than the one I've highlighted in my Screenshot which is dated February 2012.. 2 months ago.
And obviously I did search the forum first. Who wouldn't? people would like to read the answer right there without having to ask it and wait for answers.. there wasn't any results from advanced search matching my criteria. ie: branded t-mobile firmware version. able to flash ICS version I highlighted in my post without risk of bricking.
yet your very fast to have a moan and accuse me of not searching forums but you still didn't answer my question... the version highlighted in my Screenshot says Europe and not UK. yet someone else posted as long as it says UK I can flash using odin. but the Europe version in my post has kies darked out which I'm guessing can't be flashed using kies and only odin..
All I want is the latest v4 ICS unbranded OS flashed onto my Samsung galaxy s2 gt-i9100 device which currently has a branded t-mobile version on it. I've rooted it and removed all the bloatware that can't be removed without Superuser.
Can someone please just link me to the latest generic ICS for my phone? I don't need any other help. I've been flashing and modding phones since Nokia 3210. and I also understand your instant reply about not searching without even properly reading my post as I am co admin at symbian-freak.com. dunno why it's still running. symbian is a dead OS. good in its day. very good. was actually the first phones which could install application and games unlike the bull**** apple claim there iphone was. 1st edition symbian s60 v6.1 was out on the 7610 (I think) and ngage classic back in 2002 or 2003. Nokia are dead now. tho they are releasing a device with a 41 mega pixel camera on which will run on symbian.
anyway. please. just a link to download the latest generic ICS for my phone.. thanx
Marty
Any of these will work: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487, the only think you will lose by flashing an open Europe or other localization is the bloatware that comes from t-mobile UK branded firmwares. As long as it includes English as a language you'll be fine.
Edit: as the previous poster said, use the search function, read posts, etc... It took me all of 1 second to find this for you.

Don't care, didn't read your essay!
Go to i9100G forum and see how many have bricked, so that's a normal question, nothing to do with your smartness.
New version were right there on your screen shot.

sim free generic uk version is availible ics 4.0.3 (stock rom)
noticed one on samfirmware so without looking to hard im sure its floating about somewhere on this site as well
I have a new unbranded Samsung Galaxy S2 from Carphone Warehouse on Orange.
Baseband: I9100XXLPS
Kernel: 3.0.15-I9100XWLP7
Build No: IML74K.XWLP7
It came with Gingerbread 2.3.4 and I loved it. Having plugged it into Kies for the first time and accepted the software update it is now on ICS 4.0.3. I like absolutely nothing about this version and have tried to roll back to GB 2.3.4 using Odin and the link to my version of CPW firmware from skywanker.net. I was under the impression because the phone came with 2.3.4, the flash would roll back to this but it hasn’t. It is still on 4.0.3. and having now found my way to the new list of firmware on Android.firmwares.net I can see that it lists this download as 4.0.3.
Can someone please tell me how I can find a GB 2.3.4 suitable for my CPW XXLPS phone so I can roll back to the stock version it came with?
It is not rooted. I don’t want to root it I just want it as it was out the box and still under warranty!
Please help. I have spent literally days and days trying to find this answer after having plucked up the courage to flash my phone with Odin and I am so disappointed that all I’ve done it put 4.0.3 back on it!
I have spoken to CPW, Orange, Samsung and CPWs Geek Squad and come up blank!
Thank you ;o)
Tried samfirmware.com ?
Thanks for such a quick reply B3311. I've looked up the firmware for my PDA at samfirmware and it is also showing as ICS 4.0.3. This is what I find so confusing. My phone shipped with GB 2.3.4 so why can't I find that anywhere to download and roll back?! Any other suggestions?
http://www.hotfile.com/dl/150009521/71118c0/I9100XWKI4_I9100XEUKH2_XEU.zip.html
you could try this one. official 2.3.4 filed under europe, united kingdom/ireland.
or this one europe, open europe official 2.3.4 firmware
http://hotfile.com/dl/145783246/da10e07/I9100XXKH1.zip.html
Search again at sammobile, you will find the 2.3.4, if you can't search, no one can help.
Hint: Look in Europe
Don't forget to wipe
Before and after flashing.
Look at 2.3.6 aswell if you want.

Will these downloads be compatible with my phone and if I load them would they void the warranty? If anything goes wrong could I just load the 4.0.3 again via Odin? Sorry for so many questions but I have no experience of this sort of thing. I don't even download apps to use - I just like the standard stock function of the phone - or rather I did before ICS!
yeah i understand what you mean ics is pritty buggy and not as good as gb yeah they should work just fine like anything to do with flashing tho its not 100% safe. just download and flash away but take your time
Flashing stock, unrooted firmware will not void your warranty.
May be worth knowing that 2.3.4 is an older version of GB. 2.3.5 and 2.3.6 are newer, and "better" (IMO).
I'm on 2.3.6, and have no intention of moving (I will not call it "upgrading") to ICS until I get the SGS3 next month.

it depends you flash the same FW, if your dealer finds the firmware version on the phone is not the same when it was supplied , they may deney waranty...so its upto you to find the exact version and flash...
wrong....if some thing went really wrong and gone to unrecoverable stage you cant load 4.0.3 back
Normally there is nothing going wrong if you have followed the steps correctly and carefully....

All I've been doing for the last 7 days is searching, searching, searching. I can assure you I have tried to sort this problem out before posting here so please don't suggest that I can't search! Just because my level of expertise in all this is zero - doesn't mean I'm not tyring to learn and help myself!
I am not one to customise the phone so I am very wary of what I am doing to it. I am trying to ensure that I don't make matters worse for myself. I had searched samfirmware according to the criteria of my phone that they requested and it returned only the 4.0.3 option.
I have now found the list for older firmware and can see that there are some 2.3.X under Europe, but my next question is - how safe is this to use with my phone. I was under the impression from the XDA guidelines for flashing with Odin that you should only use firmware that is compatible with your own PDA, Phone and CSC. Will it void the warranty if I put something for Europe on there or cause issues with the function of the phone?
Also - I'm afriad I don't know what you mean by "wipe" the phone. Do you mean do a factory reset?
Go here and find GB Version you wanted.

I've had a good look at the list on Samfirmware and I'm guessing my best option is to try the one for GB 2.3.6 for UK (Orange). I will give it a go.... watch this space!

That link provides a very comprehensive list of firmware for my version of phone, but still not the GB 2.3.4 it was shipped with! This is exactly why I'm so confused; I just find it so odd that there is no way to find the orignal firmware for this PDA. Does anyone know if this a common thing with Samsung phones and firmware?

I keep kicking myself for allowing the update to run! I'm just not up to speed with smartphone tech I'm afraid, but I never allow major updates onto my computer until they've been around a while and all the bugs fixed which is why I am so angry with myself for not being clued up on ICS!
If I'd known about the ICS changes, I'd have stuck with GB for the cute android emoticons in SMS alone ICS has really mucked up my phone and the way I use it. I have no idea what possessed them to release firmware that has removed such useful basic functionality from so many everyday things. And as for the signal and battery problems - that's a rant for other existing threads!!!
I had an intereseting convesation with Samsung Tech though - it seems they are very aware just how buggy ICS is and the issues it's causing as they told me I'd have to send my phone back for a hardware repair if the battery life didn't improve. If this rollback doesn't work I can only hope they release a fix very quickly.
The GB 2.3.6 is slowly downloading so hopefully I’ll be able to give it a go later today. Doesn’t help that I live in the middle of the Fens in Huntingdonshire so am surrounded by beautiful country but only 2mb broadband. AGH!!! Some days I really miss cable
Disaster! Got GB 2.3.6 OK - but it's all "orangified"! Should have realised that but thought because I'm on orange that would be the right one. So now I'm downloading the 2.3.4 for UK / Ireland as orignally suggested by jonnyhall1bmx1. I'm hoping this one will be totally open and not linked to any carrier.
See what happens when I let my brain get involved!!!

since your phone is already unbranded, no need to be on a carrier ROM, search for XWLA2 or XWLA4 which is the latest versions of 2.3.6, may be released for some country name (italy ) doesnt matter...
Good for you that you search, I don't intend to make fun or insult, just that search function works and it's better to get some knowledge before hand instead of relying 100 percent on others.
Now, yes flashing using Odin is safe, as you have experienced now. La2 is the best I found and I always go back to it when required.
Yes wipe means to clean data cache.
Wiping do erase your stored files on internal storage. So remember this.
Always good to do this after and before every flash.
Dial code to wipe *2767*3855#

(a newbie)
Well I'm absolutely delighted to report that the last firmware flash has done the trick. I'm back onto GB 2.3.4 and all the functionality that I liked is back and the battery and signal strength already improved. What a huge relief! Thanks to everyone who posted here to help me. This is a great forum and it has encouraged me to be more confident with my phone and its functionality in the future.
I sincerely hope this thread will help others out there to rollback from ICS if they have the same issues I did. Ciao for now folks.
Hi,
I would like to thanks to all contributors to this thread.
I also want to rollback to 2.3.6 from 4.0.3 and I own an orange branded galaxy s2.
I've found the necessary firmware from sites posted here (I9100BVKL1_I9100OROKL1_I9100BVKL1_HOME.tar.md5).
Also, I've understood that I need only Odin for this operation.
I would like to have just a confirmation from you guys, if the method mentioned here works in the same way on branded galaxies (orange specifically).
Thank you,
Hi Guys,
Just a quick question here that I cant seem to piece the answer together for. I have seen in the forum requests and talk about Three branded S3's and just wondered if anyone that has used it or knows more than I could tell me.
1) Apart from start-up logo is there anything else on a 3 branded phone that's missing or cant be removed without needing to be root or re-flashing it?
2) I directly asked the guys in the shop if they change the firmware/ROM and they said no when Samsung release updates you get them instantly, would that be true? I mean if its branded doesn't that mean it goes through the network to tinker before release?
I ask as my HTC Desire was from T-Mobile and they took so long to release the 2.3 update (If they ever did) I went custom ROM and while I can always go custom or flash an unbranded ROM out of the box I could just go to carphone warehouse, etc and buy it unbranded in the first place (For a slightly worse deal) and the fear I feel flashing a brand new phone is quite high
Thanks,
Snowdan.

That would be a first .
Easy to test 3UK will now be on LFB firmware in the UK and available OTA /Kies as an update since last week .##

i can tell you that its not true., i also purchased it on three UK and the firmware it came with was the inital release one which is I9300XXALE8_I9300H3GALE4_H3G which i believe was released in may, i tried to update to the latest one via ota and kies but it kept saying my software is uptodate. which was a lie. i then installed I9300XXALE8 (4.0.4) which is a unbranded version and check on kies and immediately it prompted me for an update I9300XXBLFB (4.0.4) which was released 26 June 2012. I9300BVALE4 (4.0.4) was released 13 May 2012.
i had to change the CSC so that kies would recognize my device and allow updates.
check this thread and video it'll explain all

Thanks for the response guys it sounded unlikely. I will take the non optimal deal and have the unbranded out of the box just to save the upfront effort. Once I start flashing ROM's I find it hard t stop and would like to use this vanilla and unrooted (Hoping for Sky Go ICS support one of these days) for a bit.
Thanks,
Snowdan.
Hello guys!
I have Galaxy S3 I9300 GSMH.
It's unbranded, i made a research in the forum and it's supposed to be a factory unlocked phone. following the coment "But as such there is no restriction to use any ROM for any country if your device is unlocked(carrier restriction free)" by dr.ketan in http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1801022
My actual firmware installed is the UBBLG2. It's running ICS 4.0.4.
So, here is the thing, I need to know if I can stall any Official Firmware from Samsung with Jelly Bean 4.1.1.
1. What Official firmware should I install?
2. Should I change the CSC too? indicated in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1646610
3. Can I install the latest Firmware from the I9300UBBLG2 - ICS 4.0.4? Or do I need to update to another firmware version before going for the 4.1.1?
5. will this affect future update notifications by Samsung and Android?
Looking at these site and post we know the lastest firmware is I9300XXDLIB. Should I go with this one?
http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1646610
Will be this useful to root 4.1.1? http://getmovil.com/android/galaxy-s3-root/
Last thing. OR should I wait for the 4.1.1 release to this baseband version I9300UBBLG2 ?
Take care guys and thanks for all your help.

YES
1. What Official firmware should I install?
Only one JB official the Polish release .
2. Should I change the CSC too? indicated in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1646610
If you want to or have network problems .
3. Can I install the latest Firmware from the I9300UBBLG2 - ICS 4.0.4?
You can but why //
Or do I need to update to another firmware version before going for the 4.1.1?
No
5. will this affect future update notifications by Samsung and Android?
Yes no updates
Will be this useful to root 4.1.1? http://getmovil.com/android/galaxy-s3-root/
Use root from XDA only see the INDEX.
Last thing. OR should I wait for the 4.1.1 release to this baseband version I9300UBBLG2 ?
It will not be released its ICS .

Thanks for your reply JJEgan
so to make a complete picture we got.
1. I can install JB 4.1.1 Official Firmware Polish Release.
2. I don't have to change the CSC. That must remain untouched.
3. Why will this affect future updates if it is a Official Firmware used on a Factory unlocked I9300? so I won't ever get updates for bug fixes and improvements? How will I handle that?
And
4. JB is supposed to be released on the international Galaxy S3. Why do you say it's never coming to my baseband? being this a international factory unlocked.
5. I've seen too many people in the forum having issues installing JB in their Galaxy S3 like battery drain, Wi-Fi issues etc. That's why question #3. Will i have these issues too with no bug fix updates?
Thanks

Same way as you are now updating via XDA .
And
4. JB is supposed to be released on the international Galaxy S3.
It is being rolled out .
Why do you say it's never coming to my baseband?
Baseband is nothing to do with firmware .
5. I've seen too many people in the forum having issues installing JB in their Galaxy S3 like battery drain, Wi-Fi issues etc. That's why question #3. Will i have these issues too with no bug fix updates?
Your choice make your mind up wait for official update for your phone and as you don't understand the basics that may be best .
Or read and learn and flash stock rom from XDA ,

Thank again for your help, I don't want to bother you, but you make me feel confused.
First you told me that JB 4.1.1 "will not be released its ICS ."
But you do not clarify Why this official firmware from Samsung does affect future updates. I mean the Reason. WHY?
And then you do not answers my question and just told me "Your choice make your mind up wait for official update for your phone and as you don't understand the basics that may be best ." even when you said before "will not be released its ICS ."
If there is something else i should know please point me in the right direction, i just want to know and learn more to be sure before installing because it doesn't make sense installing JB if you wont ever get updates from Samsung or android for bug fixes and improvement updates.
Sorry if I'm bothering you, don't take it personal.
Repeat you need to read and learn .
Update path official via Kies or OTA OK .
No problem whenever the update is released for your phone you get it .
Alternative via XDA and flash stock rom on day of release no waiting or custom rom .
Example official JB you let us say six weeks wait .
XDA has stock JB released for Poland you can install that .
But you may then lose your official upgrade path as the codes no longer match as you do not have official firmware for your phone .
First you told me that JB 4.1.1 "will not be released its ICS >> no sorry you are confused .
Official Kies and OTA upgrades are not part of XDA .
BASICS SGS3 I9300 International Only .

Hong Kong probably
I live in China and I bought a GT-I9300 yesterday.
I noticed the phone was out of date when I got home so I started the update process, the first update went smoothly the phone rebooted and I checked if there was any other updates and there was one. The update downloaded successfully and rebooted to install and got to 31% and failed out and rebooted the phone.
At first I thought it was because the phone was partially set up to show that it wasn't a fake phone, so I did a factory reset and started the whole process over, and the same thing the update fails out at 31%.
The phone suggested I use Kies, but Kies says my phone's current firmware version is not supported via kies.
So I took to the internet to try to manually update, I spent the better part of yesterday and today trying to figure out everything about this phone but I just can't seem to get a 100% conclusion on anything so I don't want to try flashing anything and possibly messing up my phone. There just seems to be 50 different models that all have different roms and I don't want to flash the wrong one.
Info from Kies: Current firmware version: PDA:LF1 / PHONE: LEF / CSC: LF1 (XXX)
From my phone:
Model Number: GT-I9300
Android Version: 4.0.4
Baseband Version: I9300XXLEF
Build Number: IMM76D.I9300ZSALF1
Part of the problem was the guy was selling both the Western Europe model and the Hong Kong model, I was told I was getting the Hong Kong but he may have given me the Western Europe model by mistake.
From what I have read XX means means Western Europe model but another website said ZS was Hong Kong? I don't know if I go off the Baseband version or the build number.
Then I thought I will just root the device, slap CMW on it do a backup and then slap CM10.1 on it and call it a day. But following this rooting guide I need to know which version of the phone I have first.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671969
Also CM10.1 only has 1 I9300 (International) build is that a universal I9300 ROM that is safe to use on my phone?
Long post but the help is appreciated!
So I think I figured out why this isn't updating, and I think it might be rooted as I see the SuperSU app installed. I don't really care if my device is rooted or not. SuperSU has a "Clean up feature" but it isn't uninstalling and removing root.

I'd suggest you return the phone to the guy and ask for a completely clean no root version of the phone. But if that's too much of a hassle right now you can just flash stock firmware using Odin.

Right I would just flash to stock with Odin, but that was part of my question. Which stock rom do I use? Or does it even matter and any ROM will work, I think I have the Hong Kong model but I am not completely sure and I don't want to risk bricking the phone with the wrong ROM.
Your phone does seem to be an International version which means any ROM except the China ROMs will work.
The reason Kies will not update the phone is because the CSC is XXX which is pretty strange but seeing how the phone came rooted someone has been playing.
Do you want to use the phone in HK or CN? and do you need Chinese input?

I use it in China, I rarely to HK. I don't need the Chinese language on the phone although it would be nice as I am trying to learn Chinese, but I could live without it.
Thanks for your help! Much appreciated.
I a going to flash this ROM today and see what happens!
United Kingdom 2012 December 4.1.2 I9300XXELL4 I9300OXAELL4
I'm in a similar situation,
Baseband: I9300XXLFB
Build Number: IMM76D.I9300XXBLFB
Let us know how you go with the update. Thanks

The ROM you are going to flash should be ok, if you ever need Chinese input then flash any ZS or you can just install Google pinyin IME.
BTW If flashing the ROM you was going to, does work ok, then your better off having the International version than the Chinese version anyway, since you are not stuck to waiting for Chinese ROMs or installing hybrid ROMs.
Yeah I am having trouble finding a download that will work here in China and my VPN connection is down so it will be sometime before I can even download this ROM. samfiles or samfirmware can't remember the website, is blocked in China, hotfile.com is blocked which seem to be about the only 2 websites that host all the firmware downloads.
EDIT: Speak of the devil, my VPN service just released an update for their connection app, I am downloading the ROM now. Should be able to report back in around an hour and let you all know.
EDIT: Spoke to soon, VPN issues again.
would someone be willing to download I9300XXELL4_I9300OXAELL4_BTU.zip for me and throw it up on a dropbox account or some other website besides hotfile.com I am having trouble downloading this file from China.
www.sammobile.com
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Yay, I was able to get my VPN connection to stay on long enough to download the firmware and I was able to successfully apply 4.1.2 Jelly Bean to my phone!
Thanks for all your help!
Kies now reads: PDA:LL4 / Phone: LL4 / CSC: LL4
