[Q] New to custom roms a few questions - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok firstly I have tried a few different custom roms (ICS) from Resercution, Wanam, Litening rom and Omega
They are all good and very fast, currently using Wanam latest 9.9 blue theme
however a few things i cant seem to get to work maybe some of you can help:
-Noone of the roms seem to show the SMS notification on the lock screen as with custom samsung (not the samall notification bar at the top, i mean in the custom samsung you get a nice big notification in the middle of the lock screen showing sms)
-also with the custom roms, when putting the phone to sleep, for a millisecond the screen lights up again before going dark
- need the ability to change the vibration types for sms i have to keep my phone on silent(vibration) in uni, the current 2 weak bursts of vibration can barely be felt when i recieve a sms.
thanks for reading.

1. Try Widget Locker or something similar from the market.
2. I'm on CM9 and don't have this problem.
3. CM9 allows you to adjust the haptic feedback (vibration).

The second problem you mentioned is there for many and its there with almost all custom roms. Crt off would be the culprit

Question about LED notification

Is it possible that when i receive an sms / text message the top LED starts to flicker instead of the bottom one? I'm really looking to this as i find it more convenient that the top one starts to flicker.
Does anyone have the answer?
Well I don't know how you go about setting it, or even if you can, but they do work, depending on what ROM you use. If you use a Sense ROM then the LED will blink fine. On Vanilla ROMs they won't. With some of the older AOSP ROM's around you used to get a static LED, amber/green for sms/gmail notifications. With the latest CyanogenMod based ROMs you don't get anything. Only the trackball pulses, which is cool.
However, Elemag has claimed to have the LEDs working on his new ROM - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=708673

[Q] Notification led for sgs2

As we all know, the sgs2 doesn't have notification leds. However, we do have leds under the menu and back buttons. I was wondering if anyone knows of any app that takes advantage of this. I want to use the menu and back button led as a notification led. Periodically flashing would be extremely helpful. I know there is NoLed on the market but that isn't the most elegant solution. Perhaps even using camera flash on minimum minimum brightness could be doable.
You need BLN for that. (Back Light Notification)
1- You have to flash BLN compatible kernel for that. For example- Ninphetamine.
2- You need to have liblights.zip installed. You can find it from Jame Bond thread.
3- You need to install BLN Control Pro for that, free version wont work for Missed calls and stock SMS/MMS app.
4- If you want notification for stock SMS/MMS app then you have to install 'Light Flow Lite' from market.
I was recently using it with that kernel, but I don't like that kernel at all.
Besides flashing too many things for just a simple light notification is very kiddish. Got rid of BLN and back to CF. No intention of getting it unless it start supports all kernels.
Regards.
Im running the villainROM 2.4.2 with ninphetamine kernal and XXKG6 installed.downloading the BLN app from the market you get that.

Has anyone noticed the red light that appears at the top of the phone next to the front camera and sensor? I've only really noticed it once the phone has been fully charged.
Perhaps this could be used to indicate a notification, assuming there isn't an app that already uses this light?
Lol, thats the Proximity sensor taking effect dude.

Well whatever it is, could it not be used as a notification indicator if it hasn't already been?
Sent from my GT-I9100
No sir, it can only be used in a call when you put your phone near your face/ear it helps to turn off the screen.
Regards.
Wait, so that really is an led light?! I've never seen it go off, it would be sweet to have a red notification led, just like my old Blackberry... BLN works okay for now, though is is NOWHERE as bright as the led on the blackberries.
I started using NoLED, coming from a Desire I was a bit disappointed. I like NoLED but I'm concerned about the impact it has on battery even though I have mine set to 1% brightness and I rather have the standard icons on screen rather than the custom icons to be honest.

Wooaaa.....
why such hassle?
i thought android suppose to be the smarted OS. :-(
back when i was using symbian, light signal plus, a simple app can make softhey LED lit up.
i was hoping theres a widget or app in android that can do the same thing.
rooting or flashing for such small function seems overkill. :-(

Android is the smartest OS but it isn't the simplest one. And as an user, not a dev, I don't like that too.
I also remember about Light Signal Plus when I had 5800XM.

[Q] LED lights in CM nightly build #13

I was wondering how these worked, right now I have it enabled. Whenever I miss a call the bottom buttons on the bottom light up (menu, home, back...) and they do not go away until I clear the missed call notification. I was wondering if this is the way it is supposed to work? all there is to it? are there any settings where I can make them blink? I was thinking it would be more like the app noLED.
I'm sorry if this is a N00b question with an obvious answer, I have searched but can't find the answer.
thanks for any/all replies!
That's referred to as BLN (BackLight Notification). Its supposed to light up for missed calls, texts, emails, or any other notification. Its suppoed to state lit up til you clear it. What you are describing is expected behavior. There is an app in the market called BLN something, to manage it, built for the Captivate. There is also an app called blinky that worked on the captivate to make them blink.
In theory it should work better than NoLED, it should take less battery and processor. It hasn't been implemented in the stock based ROMs (for the S II) because it causes the phone to not enter deep sleep mode (as does noLED). It must be new to CM7. Hopefully if it doesn't cause a wake lock in CM7 it can be ported back to stock based ROMs. This is the last feature I was looking for in the custom ROMs for this phone.

Yes what he said above except Blinky and BLN APP will not work for cm7 on the SGS2. Cm7 has its own setting to control it. You can disable them if you don't want to use led notifications from with the settings or CyanogenMOD settings.
Yes it creates a wakelock until you clear the message, missed call, etc. Then the wakelock goes away. Also there is a timeout for the led notification that can be controlled also.

[Q] Disable backlit keys on CM7

I moved from Stock 2.3.4 samsung rom to Cyanogenmod 7 (stable).
I have one problem though, I cant seem to disable the keylights of the two buttons, one on either side of the home button. It is annoying as hell when I use my phone in a dark room.
Can anyone help me?
No one knows?
PS.
I think I am gonna move to MIUI ROM, this still has many bugs ... Get a lot of FC on random apps.
Is there not an option in CM7? On stock its in Settings>Display>Touch key light duration.

Nope, I looked for it 1st. Could not find it.

there is an app called "Screen filter" it's ad free and free - it is exactly what you are looking for, and it operates via a widget... you can put a dark filter on your screen to make the screen very dark, and you have the option to disable the button back lights too... you can create several widgets with whatever level of darkness you desire... I couldn't use my phone at night without it!!
You glorious bastard! I've been searching all over for a solution to this problem!
Accept my deepest thanks.

[Q] 5 Sola Questions

1. How do I turn off floating touch completely? It makes gaming impossible, and has no real benefits other than previewing xvideos.com clips. I of course tried disabling glove mode, no success. I tried installing an app that was supposed to turn it off, it even requested root, but did nothing after reboot.
2. How do I disable the the illumination bar and the backlight of the capacitive buttons permanently? The led illuminates one side more than the other and it doesn't look good. A couple of apps allowed me to do this, but then they just stopped running in the background and the lights were back. I need a permanent solution here.
3. I love the option that I can limit my background processes, but I always end up with my xperia home closed, and the whole home screen gets reloaded. Can I add it as a specific exception? So a max of 4 processes, but never close xperia home.
4. The screen is flickering when I set the backlight to the lowest setting. I have my auto brightness off. What could be the problem?
5. After the ICS update, the notification bar has two battery indicators, one is a percentage, the other one is an icon. How do I get rid of one without installing a loader?
+1. How can I make my Sola more responsive? I froze bloatware, I restart the phone pretty much every day, but it seems to lag and freeze all the time.
Thanks!
Use a custom rom like CM and most of your problems will be solved!!!
But its meant for unlocked Bootloaders only ..

Yes, you need to flash CM as it doesn't have floating touch, and users say it's the fastest.
But I can tell you about flickering, it's normal no problem with that.
As to battery percentage, you must flash a modded notifications bar, you can find many in Apps section.
As to reloaded home, make sure u have latest .54 firmware, try using task killer, or simply another home launcher, and set background processes to 3 max.
