Hello everyone! I recently began contemplating rooting and doing custom installs for my 959, for something fresh and better performing, also seems my music player has been acting up recently and am really interested in something new along with voodoo sound... If necessary anymore ? Thing is, there are so many ways to root, and there are so many custom roms??? I don't know where to start or what to look for? I just want one of the better, stable, new custom roms available as of this date for the t-959. I search but seems there's no definitive answer? Just a lot of roms haha?
Also when downloading a rom, do I have to download like 30-40-50 kernels and add them? I see all these roms, kernels and update??? Is it just download a rom and that's it, am I making more of it than it should be?
I'm just really noob'ish, really confused, and really, really nervous! I can't afford to brick this phone, but I really want something new.
Thanks for reading, and I apologize for some of the silly questions I have asked .
I fell in love with rom flashing as it greatly improves performance and gives phone a new look. Especially since Vibrant isn't supported anymore.. I can't live without voodoo goodies=) Definitely improves sound.
Negative side of custom roms is it takes up some of your time.. Finding a rom you like, tweaking it.. Not too mention you might brick you phone.
If you decide so.. the most important thing is always read OP...
I used superoneclick to root. I recommend Bionix 1.3.1 as a first rom very stable though a bit outdated. After playing around with the rom, you can try different 2.2 kernels and modems. Then go on to gingerbread roms.=)
Extremely easy. I'd suggest reading some of my guides in my signature.
I would Odin
Then download a ROM (nothing else needed)
Download my option b update.zip
Move both to internal sd
Reboot into recovery
Click reinstall packages
Choose to install zip from sd, select ROM, reboot.
Sent using the XDA app.

Thank you trailblazer and thanks s15....
Any roms you would recommend s15? I appreciate the starting rom you gave me Trail, I'm looking for something a little more up to date I suppose? I was looking at cm7 or Simply Honey 5.0 Revolution(JVR GB 2.3.4)? Something with voodoo already in it? Something pretty stable with a bit of features. Maybe a lil less lag than stock 2.2, better performance, audio and battery life as well?
Thanks so much again both!
cm7 in nightlies still, though seem pretty stable, i havent tried for a while. Lots of features though dont think battery too great.
Simply Honey is a good one, stable, lots of features, great developer support.
I'm currently on RevolutionRom 2.3.4, stable and smooth for me, only bad is itfreezes like once or twice a day. More of a sgs2 look which i like. Good battery.
FYI Flashing Gingerbread roms, you will need to flash gingerbread bootloaders to remove rainbows and see recovery ( theres a post on it)
Also GPS isn't stable on gingerbread.

I think I'm gonna try the simply honey one or wait till he does a final release?, as for the bootloaders, what do I do or go to there? Also for the kernels, do I need to download one for simply honey? Should I download one for it?
I seen some roms or kernel can improve wifi and signal? Is that true, if so point me in that direction hahaha...
Thanks so much bro by the way.
search for Vibrant gingerbread bootloader, it's flashable via odin..simply honey roms comes with bullet kernel & there's Simply Honey Talon Kernel build by simone201 =)
Thanks man, do you mind if I ask which one you would recommend (Odin or Clockwork?)... I stumbled upon this youtube how to called "Custom ROM installation tutorial for the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S (Vibrant)", and was just wondering if I can apply all his methods to SH 5.0? Sorry tried to link it but cannot due to my post count... Oh and when I'm done, how should I proceed with the new talon kernel?
Also if there's a new release of honey or the final release, say I installed this one... Do I have to do it all over again? Same wit kernels? Finally, do I need to revert my unrooted stock 2.2 froyo back to a previous version before gingerbread or any of this?
Thanks for your reply. I'm actually feeling like it's almost go time with this rom and kernel haha. Really thanks heaps!
D bootloader is only flashable by odin..you can read the OP for simply honey, what you need is all in there in d development area..flash kernel that works 4ur phone u decide on that wether bullet or talon..you can use sgs kernel flasher to switch bet the two..

One last question before I do this, I seen SH 5.1, but I seen it was for the i9000? Which one should be used? or the one you may recommend? Im looking for voodoo sound controls.
Thanks
EDIT:
Nevermind I read it will be up tomorrow... gonna do 5.1, this is pretty exciting as long as I don't screw anything up hahaha
i reverted back to stock firmware via odin and one click rooted my phone, factory wiped all data and now I remember after I rooted my phone I had unzipped file in my sd card and it told me that i can just delete it after I was done, well i did and then watched a video on clockwork that said not to delete it?
EDIT: Nevermind I fixed it, I just unrooted and rooted again...
So sorry for being a pain, I know you guys have better things to do.
3 questions and this thread is done... thanks for the help...
1. Does the market work on simply honey? Like can go in and search and download it like usual?
2. should I use odin to install 5.1 or cw?
3. how does the kb5 work? is that like default or do i have to flash it?
Thanks a million in advance!
Hey everyone, this is thread is meant to centralize all of the information and questions about the kernels for this phone. I feel as though information about peoples issues, and their "triumphs" with certain kernels are scattered everywhere, so finding useful information can be tedious. I have noticed that most, if not all of the ROM threads specifically say, "No kernel questions". This is what this thread is going to be for. I also thought it would be neat to have some general discussion about kernels. for example, what kernels work best with what ROM, what are some of the issues that people run into, what works, what doesn't work, etc...
I know there is only a few kernel options now, but hopefully that list will grow and as it grows this thread will be become more useful.
there are only a few rules for this thread:
1. No flaming-one of goals for this thread is to help noobs, this thread is meant to de-clutter the ROM threads of kernel questions, (seemingly stupid or intelligent).
2. This thread is for talk of kernels only, there is a "off topic" discussion thread for everything else; and ROM threads to specifically talk about ROMS
So far i only know of three kernel types:
Faux's kernel
Stock kernels
X boarder's kernels, (different variants to go with different ROMS).
From what i understand Faux's kernels work with pretty much all of the ROM's but seem to cause boot loops.
I do not know too much about X's kernels and the issues they cause, so it would be nice if some one filled me in.
Ill start the thread by saying, I have used the stock kernel that shipped with my phone over the quick sense ROM, and the Bullet proof 2.4 ROM. the weird thing with that was, my WIFI worked. its weird because X, and everyone else says to flash one of X's or Faux's kernels or else wifi will not work. I have been apprehensive about flashing kernels because of the boot loop issues people have reportedly been having. however i went ahead and flashed the kernel that was included in the Bullet proof 2.4 ROM. i haven't used the phone all that much so no bootloop yet. the phone is fast and smooth. X's kernels are able to be overclocked and have three governors. i am very curious about Faux's kernel because he did some amazing things on the Mytouch 4g when i had it.

Idk about the WiFi question, I'm not educated enough on that, but what I've found to be successful is flashing the boot.img from xboarders ROM's .zip file with easy kernel flasher to get the best results. But with Energy ROM, I flash the stock kernel he provided with the stock kernel flasher. That method has worked flawlessly for me. I've never had a random reboot and I've never had a broken WiFi or BT. I've never had to flash a kernel more than once due to failed flash either.

Thanks for the response.. i just wanted to read up on all this more before i flash another rom..Ive been on Energy rom since i got the phone but at first i had the wifi issue, then i went & dwnloaded his stock kernel & flashed it thru flash image gui..i dnt have access to a computer unless i go to a friend house so i rely alot on flash image gui lol.. thats why im askin if its fine to flash roms without flashin another kernel..
I'm not sure why, but the stock kernel worked just fine On quick sense and on bullet proof. I never had a wifi issues on those but the wifi on the energy rom didn't work. I'm using faux's kernel on bullet proof 2.4. I guess fauxs kernel is included in the bullet proof zip. I have only had 1 reboot in the past week. Also faux's kernel can be over clocked which is nice if your into that. I came from a mytouch 4g also so learning all this stuff can be a pain but once you read over everything its really not that difficult

I finally relocked and forced the RUU (newest official version of our phone software) which puts you on the stock everything (ie kernel), and am running just fine on Energy ROM. Wifi works great, I haven't tried Bluetooth. So a far as I can tell, the stock kernel from TMo RUU 1.43 runs great and wifi is perfect. FYI.

I'm probably just educated enough to be way off-base, but it seems to me a kernel with a wifi problem would also have a BT problem. Do people tend to experience those 2 together?

I'm pretty sure it had to do with the official build each rom is based off of. I know the official update to 1.43 changed the kernel around so if people have a stock kernel from an earlier official ruu the wifi and bt break when updating to a build based off 1.43. Most all roms past xboarders beast mod 2.0 are built off 1.43 at least. I think there are some ones newer than 1.43 but I'm not sure if the kernel had any updates in those builds.

Firstly.. I'll admit that I didn't read as throughly as I probably should have.. I have rooted several phones with the first being the original Motorola Droid and then a couple others.. All fairly tricky but for the most part no big deal... Anyway, I had no idea what S-ON or S-OFF meant nor was it very easy to find information such as this explained in detail..
Anyway, here is where I'm at..
1. Running S-ON, ICS w/ Slim 1.6
2. Phone has a tendency to reboot when it feels like it.. hasn't been too bad but seems to happen more when it's on 4G
3. Phone will NOT allow me to mount the internal storage nor the sd card when I plug into a computer.. like I mean it's not even an option, all I get are charge and internet tethering options..
4. the BIGGEST issue.. I can not tether whatsoever.. I've tried several apps such as Barnacle & PDAnet but none of which work.. I'm sorry I'm just used to the days of my incredible where it was very easy to tether and install ROM's all day long so I guess I was spoiled..
Any help would be appreciated.. the more I read though the more that S-OFF will offer and am I correct to have read that if I do the S-OFF I can turn my phone back to a "locked" status in the boot loader and in turn can also put back to completely stock??
Thanks!
You need to flash the old firmware patch. Should be able to find it in one of the rom threads

So after checking into some things I tried going a different route..
I downloaded Nils' Business ICS 4.0.3 Sense 3.6 (ICS Latest) (Aroma Installer).. followed the instructions.. installed with S-ON etc.. everything seemed fine.. NOW it won't stop rebooting after I configured Gmail & my work E-mail.. I can't boot into the bootloader menu unless I remove the SD card because it tries to flash the PH98IMG.zip as soon as it loads..
SO what to do next?? HBOOT I have the following information
UNLOCKED
VIGOR PVT SHIP S-ON SL
HBOOT-2.11.0000
Radio-0.95.00.1118r/0.95.0.1223r

HELP please!!
.make sure you install the kernel and the gb firmware patch...these 2 things missing will cause bootloops .
If you have issues ask in Nils thread and I am sure he will help you out. I have been s off and on ics firmware for awhile prior to the aroma install method. Otherwise I could help you out more
Edit: you will want to select the first 3 boxes on the aroma install screen...Rom...kernel...gb firmware patch
Not sure how the installer works after that...but that's a start.
Edit2: you are currently on gb firmware, in the future if you run a gb Rom you will need to flash the gb kernel for the Rom. Any ics based rims will require the ics kernel AND the firmware patch. Without the firmware patch your sd card won't show up properly. The wrong kernel will end up in boot loops. Hope this helps explain things a bit.

Thank you very much for the help... I really thought I was on ICS firmware.. I know this sounds stupid but isn't Android version 4.0.3 ICS??
OH WAIT it just hit me.. So my ROM is 4.0.3 but the kernel is still GB.. I gotcha.. so of course my next question is.. can I upgrade to ICS firmware without S-OFF or is that a requirement???
I think what I'll end up doing is just flashing GB ROM but curious what would be needed to get to ICS firmware and can I get back again?
You can upgrade to ics firmware (via ics ruu). However with s on, you can only run the ruu you are currently on and/or newer versions/leaks. With s off you can run any ruu you like.
Basically you never ran an ics ruu, so your firmware is gingerbread. You can run either gb or ics. With a gingerbread Rom, you would flash Rom and kernel. With ics Roms, you'll need to flash Rom, kernel, and firmware patch.
If you decide to upgrade and run a ics ruu it will upgrade your hboot, radios, and change the mount point for the sd card. The mount point change is the reason for the firmware patch. After running an ics ruu you will have ics firmware. Running a ics Rom, you'll flash Rom and kernel. If you change mind and want to go to a gb Rom, you'll need Rom, kernel, and firmware patch.
So depending on which version or way you go depends on the method of flashing a Rom. Firmware is independent of roms, and the only easy way to change firmware is via a RUU.
Supposedly the ota is coming soon, supposedly the latest leak is the ota, supposedly the s off exploit will not be able to be patched.
I decided to s off...there's many threads with lots of info...so if you decide to go that route take time, read, and read some more. It's not too hard just take your time and don't get frustrated.
Once s off, most roms flash the kernels automatically, saving you a step. You can also run any ruu you want. Ruu is like a factory image that wipes the phone and upgrades radio, etc....basically it will be like you first got the phone and turned it on.
Everyone has different experiences with radios, some are betterfor some, others worse. Overall the new ics firmware seems to be better on battery and network speed for me at least.
There's many ways to proceed....however most roms that are being worked are ics based...and will be more so when the official ics ota hits.

ICS is the way to go, and for it to run properly you should run the latest RUU leak. This will give you the correct firmware. Once you flash the recovery of your choice back onto your phone and re-root, you really should S-off. Amon-Ra is the best initial Recovery choice, because it'll root anything, right there in recovery. S-off simplifies EVERYTHING. From there, you can flash the ICS Rom of your choice, and not have any of the issues you've been reporting.
With S-off, you can flash whatever radio you want, put a different boot-up splash screen on, and the kernel installs automatically when you flash a Rom.
It's a little time consuming, but it isn't difficult. There are threads from some very helpful guys here that explain how to do everything. So when you have some time, I suggest you just go for it. You'll be glad you did.
Best of luck,
BBEgo

I'm still a little leary on doing the S-OFF so I have a question on this.. What do you mean by this?? What has to match to be able to run ICS ROM's.. Are you saying the ICS Firmware version needs to match the ICS ROM?
So I have been upgrading my ROM without realising I should probably upgrade my Kernel too. Just loaded up Devil Toast 0.7 and it works great, but since installing it I haven't been able to use my wifi. Started getting curious, and I noticed a lot of people have a different kernel than myself, and the last time I probably upgraded mine was when I installed CM7.
So my question is, where/how can I get a more up to date kernel? I did a few searches but I wasn't able to find solid answers. I really just want a nice stable kernel that works with Devil Toast.
are you CDMA or GSM? HTC just released the kernel source code the other day. So now the kernel devs can actually start making good kernels. AFAIK for CDMA the only kernel besides stock is the MAC kernel(see here). There might be a few floating around the Infected forums, but I'm not sure. Best bet right now is to probably run the kernel that comes with the rom, until the devs pump out some better kernels with more features(and more stable). Maybe post your WiFi problems in the DevilToast thread to see if someone has an answer?

I'm CDMA with a kernel version is [email protected], and I've noticed a few of the people in the devil toast thread are running 3.0 versions of a kernel. So I'm guessing those people installed a different kernel than what the ROM carries? I might just do a complete wipe and see what happens, I just hate re-configuring everything. I was going to post on the DT thread but I can't since I haven't made enough posts on the boards. Tricky business.
The kernel in question is right here: https://github.com/htc-mirror/shooteru-ics-crc-3.0.16-e733189 but I have no idea how to go about grabbing it for my phone. I was never big on compiling my own code.
It seems like you are running toascfh's WiMAX build, correct? agrabren has had a 3.0 kernel for a bit now on DevilToast. What version are you running? Try installing the newest one(.7). I would recommend a full wipe though... the latest version has almost everything working sans 3D.

Yeah, that's what I was running before. I just tried a full wipe and reinstalled 0.7 devil toast, but it didn't change my kernel. I'm guessing i'm missing a step or doing something wrong for my particular phone. I've got hboot 1.50 and I have successful root, but I've heard of hboot 1.50 causing fussiness, so maybe it's related.
I've been dropping into TWRP and flashing the ROM from there. Since I've got hboot 1.50, do you think I'll need use adp to push the ROM through? That's how I originally flashed toastcfh's mod, but when I tried to use adp to push CM9, it wasn't cooperating, so I just used TWRP.
Are you S-ON? I know alot of people have been having problems booting DT, one thing that seems to help is using 4ext recovery. You should try changing your recovery, you can always go back if it doesn't help or you don't like it. Just fyi, nandroids are not compatible between the two. Using 4ext, wipe all but SD card, then flash the rom, then wipe data again and you should be good to go.

I was S-ON. I finallyyyyy got it working, but it was a hell of a pain. I ended up downgrading to hboot 1.40, which was a majority of the hassle. Then I got it to S-OFF. Once I got that going, I was able to get both the ROM and the Kernel to flash. I get to deal with a new issue, but the original problem of the Kernel not updating is fixed. It's now running 3.0.x very nicely.
Thanks for the help, I finally have my wifi back!
After unlocking my DNA, I decided upon the SuperHatka Rom.
Reading the instructions, I flashed the kernel (boot.img) at the beginning of the tutorial/post
and then flashed the Slim 2.0.0 rom.
I seem to have lost root. I read about this in a few places and followed what someone said.
I wiped.
Flashed Rom
Flashed the kernel
then the modules.
Still no root. Got my wifi access back, *chuckles*
The modules, from the Cubed DNA Kernal that I read about.
Did I do something wrong?
Of course, appreciation for all this hobby stuff you guys do is on high.
I wish I had the ability to stick to one thing at a time. Too many shiny things around. )

there are no modules with the kernel given. the modules are included in the ROM. Also the rom does not use cubed kernel.

Flash Kernel
Flash Rom

Weird. I had SuperSU installed on here already and ran it a few times.
Downloaded the other Super User and that did it.
Thanks. :/
