Need help figuring out if I have a bad prime screen - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Hi guys.
Ever since I got my prime I was really dissapointed by the color and sharpness of the screen on my prime. I bought a nook color for $170 for my mom and the screen on that one looks much more sharp and the colors stronger and more accurate. Like when I watch the simpsons on the prime, the yellow color look more grey than yellow, basically like a grey layer ontop of the colors.
I know the prime screen is not supposed to have super vibrant colors like samsung screens, but it is almost painful to watch south park or simpsons on it because it looks really bad. I own a lot of devices, and my prime screen looks the worst in my opinion. My friends also agree that it doesn't look right, but sadly I can't find anyone with a prime near me to compare.
So I was wondering if anyone can take a few pictures of colors next to any of their other devices, or describe how you experience the prime screen compared to your other devices. I heard people say that the prime screen has more "accurate" colors than vibrant. But I don't feel like the colors are "accurate" when colors look more grey than the colors they are supposed to be. Any help is appriciated!
Tried taking some pictures but the camera doesn't pick up how it really looks.

Thats just how the colors are. In my house hold i have a "new iPad", T-Prime, Galaxy Note and a Galaxy Tab and also a PS Vita. I've seen the Prime on display at numerous locations and its the same as mine.
Obviously Samsung has very saturated colors compared to other. But even to the iPad the colors seem off.
I didn't notice until i compared it to other devices though. But i guess if you aren't into punch colors especially Red,Green,Blue then it won't bother many.

About the Nexus S: Thats the Super-AMOLED phenomenon. It doesn't look "real" but it looks really colorfull. Some people say "saturated" some say "over saturated".
I saw a comparison of video quality between the Ipad 2 and Ipad 3 on Cnet... even when you compare those two devices Ipad 2 colors look way off. It seems every display-type has it's own "colorscheme".
Just enjoy it, and don't compare it. It's a Mindkiller ;-)

That's normal on primes. I have an acer a100 and the colors are deeper compared to my prime.

The pale colours when you are watching videos on the prime is due to the dynamic contrast kicking in.
When you play a video on the prime, it automatically switches on dynamic contrast which regulates colour saturation and back light intensity to save power.
A way way to catch it in action is to have a video running and then hit the home button straight away without stopping the video. You'll notice the screen's colour intensity will change slowly back to normal.
Unfortunately I don't think there is a way to disable it and it seems to run regardless of what performance profile and tips mode you have the screen in.

Thanks for all answers guys! I found that putting the tablet in normal mode while watching videos on diceplayer stops the dynamic contrast kicking in on some video files. Was watching south park today and when I went from balanced to normal mode, suddently the guys went from having sorta white faces to more natural looking ones.
I don't see this different in all video files, which is a bit strange. Most of the time I see no different between balanced and normal mode. I also noticed when I haven't rebooted in a while that the colors look kinda bad even though I have on normal mode, like the dynamic contrast thing kicks in when it shouldn't. Wish there was a way to turn this off. Like, watching simpsons now on normal mode look not too bad actually, but yesterday watching the same file, then the colors seemed more off.
Putting it on power saving mode makes all video files look bad.

[Q] Galaxy SII blueish tint on screen, anyone?

Hi,
Just got my Galaxy SII today.
Compared to my old LG Optimus 2X, the screen is very dim, although very colorful. The whites are incredibly blue, as can be seen here:

The Optimus (to the left) is with automatic brightness enabled, and the SII (to the right, duh!) is with brightness set to max, manually.
The screen seems VERY blue compared to the Optimus.
Is this normal with the SII?

There's definitely color variations across different examples of the phones ranging from cool to warm. The warm seems to bug people more than the cool. In this long and painful thread you can see some pics of other phones side-by-side to see where yours falls.

Mine's on the cool side but I can't tell from the way you took the pic how different it is from yours. There's some pics of mine in the above thread.

It just bothers me that the Optimus 2x which havent been marketed on base of it's screen, beats the hell out of the GS2, in brightness and color trueness.

I had a G2X, the O2X's bastard relation. I liked the G2X display but thought the contrast was just OK and it didn't perform well in daylight. The SGS2 screen because of the black-blacks and exaggerated colors took some getting used to. After two months, I look at an LCD display now and go ewww. You'll probably feel the same way when you get over the shock. Watch a movie, that'll make you feel better

I appreciate your input, although the blue is so bad, it gives people in the vids a kind of smurf-ish look.
And besides that, the off-center viewing angle makes the blue tint even worse. The reviews praise the wide viewing-angle, which is as arrow as about 30-40 degress before the colors gets distorted.
ammm,,,i dont think that that much bluish tint is normal,,,,u sure u dint get a faulty handset??i mean yeah super amoled plus has a bit of a bluish tint,,,,but man! thats too much blue....(ps-i compared mine to some lcd screens so dont tell me to place it beside one)

It seems as if the problem degrades slowly over time... Hmm...
The viewing angle issue can be seen here:

As you can see, you can't move the camera much before the colors go even more smurf.
I think the blue tint is related to the Super AMOLED Plus technology.

yes,,Amoled technology alwayz had this issue,,,its very slight,,,u can not notice it that easily,,,but that much blue is not normal...
It actually seems as you'll have to look at the phone from a very straight angle, as only a few degrees will result in the blueish colors. And the weird part is - going a few degrees further will result in normal-ish colors (yet still very dim) - and afterwards turn into blueish again, "the rest of the way", if you catch my drift.
I'd go blue over yellow any day. But that's too blue and whoever you bought it from would have to be blind to not see it; return it. I hope you didn't buy it off eBay...

Got my galaxy s2 couple of days ago from expansys, it has no blue tint or yellow left side, the only thing it has is on lowest brighness setting on grey background bottom right corner you can barely see some kind of ring like shadow . Good thing you can only see it under that situation only.
Feel bad for others with blue tint and yellow side , get replacement ?
My captivate(SGS 1) and SGS2 both have same even whites.
Hard to see even harder to photograph shadow ring.
The ring thing is called the "coin syndrome".
The service center wouldn't acknowledge the blueishness as a defect, even though my phone compared to a demo GSII was an electronic smurf.
The blue tint is probably from the Gorilla Glass coating.

Surely this can be fixed with an update to give an option for colour temperature though...
Make sure yours is not in econo mode. It takes all the pretty colors away and places a pee looking filter on everything. (but hey it does save some power )
According to one review I read, the prime is "Brighter, blacker blacks, decreased glare, and less backlight bleed on the Prime."

My screen isnt that yellow... The colors are ok but my touchpad is on par with it. Backlight bleed is still an issue with the Prime, just hope your one of the lucky ones with no bleed.
I have backlight bleed but its not too bad, i can deal with it.
I usually just run my prime with the lowest brightness setting with super ips mode turned on... Looks good and also saves power (i get good battery), plus i can perfectly see the screen in any condition unless im at the beach...
Could someone make some screen pictures of the 1st gen Transformer next to the Prime? I'm really curious how these compare colour wise.
Hey, this is really similar to the issue the iPad and iPhone had in the beginning.
iPad 2 News: What’s That Yellow Blotch On The iPad 2 Screen
Put simply, that means the glue holding the glass together is not completely dry. So if your iPad 2 is suffering from a case of yellow fever, don’t rush back to the store and try to exchange it. (Good luck with that, since waiting times for delivery of new units are now 2-3 weeks.) Just use it for a few days and the blotch should disappear, just like those on the iPhone 4.

I got my Prime yesterday, the first thing I noticed is the screen are very yellowish comparing to my old TF101.
I did took a few pictures but coz I'm a newbie I can't post links in my reply, if anyone wants to see it I can PM you the link or helping me post the links.
I was able to get two Primes. One from gamestop and one from Adorama. The grey one from amazon had a yellowish tint and made the gold one from adorama look amazing in comparison . They both have light leakage but I can only see it during bootup. imo if you are unhappy with the colors of the screen then send it back and pray for a better one. I think from now on I'm going to buy more than one and keep the better of the two. I also think the wifi is a little better on the gold one, but both are weak in comparison to my galaxy 10.1. I do find the prime to be a bit faster and smoother than the Samsung . I think the first thing anyone should install is thumbs keyboard best AP by a long shot.
I might be going crazy, but it does seem like the yellow on my 5 day old prime is slowly going away.
Maybe its the same issue the iphone 4/4s had where the glue has to dry? I know my 4s was yellow when I got it but now I dont see any yellow.
I think it has more to do with color temperature than anything. I get headaches staring at overly cool temps, so a yellow tint actually ends up being a bit of a plus in my book...

Agreed. Samsung is notorious for very cold screens. The screen on my Epic 4G Touch is downright blue, particularly noticeable when reading ebooks. By contrast, the screen on my Motorola Photon is much warmer and hence whites are better. Given a choice between a bit of a blue bias and a little yellow, and I'll take the latter any day.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
Is the screen made by multiple manufacturers? With my HTC Sensation, Sharp makes some of the panels, and AUO makes the rest, and the Sharp panels are by far better than the yellowish AUO panels. Just throwing out a possible explanation.
Got my 32gb champagne Prime today. And also noticed the yellow screen. Don't know what store it came from because I bought it for ebay.
Coming from a Galaxy tab 10.1 and can compare them side by side the Prime is yellow and Galaxy tab is white.
Had a Motorola Xoom before and that also had this yellow stuff, not as much Prime but it was there.
Maybe I noticed the yellow more now because I coming from Samsung white screens.
Hopes it gets better with time because I have no chance to go and change it because it bought over ebay. Maybe it's the clue hat someone mentioned, may tab has been out on a journey over the seas and is cold and tiered so maybe when it have got som warm and rest it will perform better

The "Grey" is Purple, not a purplish tinted Grey

I'm not really complaining but its friggen purple, they should stop advertising it as Amysthest Grey.
I know there trying not to get sued by Apple by using these colors but I think Asus needs to start playing in the other end of the Crayola box.
Here is an amethyst. Not sure why they are putting the word gray at the end.

With people using different lighting and cameras and everyone looking at the pics on different monitors it's not going to help you much. Some people have posted that it's "definitely grey" even when it's in front of them. In other words, you need to see one.
To my eyes the one sat in front of me is definitely purple with a greyish hue. It really does depend on the light in the room at the time though.
I have a 64GB grey unit on pre-order - I hope my only problem is the idea that the color is a little girly. Did you ever think it may have a high Wife Acceptance Factor? Maybe it will attract chicks at the local Starbucks. I can't wait!

Now looking at with your eyes and not through a picture it looks purple-ish.
It definitely isn't grey and it isn't purple either. So Amethyst Grey would be the most accurate description.

That looks accurate to me. I tried taking some pictures comparing to an ipad, and it just came out grey. The purple is more visible as a direct normal reflection, any reflection at a wider angle seems more grey. It's a kind of gun-metal grey (but purple rather than blue)

I'd call it more of a dull purple with metallic highlights. How would that be for a sku??? TF201-32GB-DPwMH?
Not to quick double post but I just went to take a picture of it with my Nexus I didn't even bother. It looks completely stainless steel through the viewfinder, yet it looks like I have the Barney skin on it IRL.
BTW, a true gunmetal would have been brilliant
this thread has been very helpful, thanx to all picture posters and to those sharing there opinions on why the pictures don't do it justice.

Purple or grey, it still looks mad sexy I can't wait to get mine tomorrow. Damn UPS is so slow... Hoping it arrives early tomorrow! Anyway I ordered a leather case for it, so the back won't even be seen that often.
And haaa yeah I like the "Decepticon" Version idea

What screen mode do you prefer?

Seemingly to counter the LCD owners moaning about AMOLEDs vibrant colours Samsung has added an extra mode to the S3 screen settings.. 'Natural'. We now have 4 modes.
Dynamic
Standard
Natural
Movie
There is also a temperature option within the videoplayer itself to further tweak the look.
Which do you prefer?
Natural all the way. Once you use it for a while Dynamic and standard look a little too gimmicky..
Actually prefer standard! Natural and movie look too washed out and dynamic looks too saturated.

Nah, it doesn't have any of the "scanline-ish" stuff you see on the pictures, it's the camera's macro mode.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA
Maybe not the scanlines, but my galaxy s ii with low resolution and dithering can look like a windows 95 machine with only 256 colors when viewing many pictures. Giant blocks of limited colors and shades. They just happen to be very very saturated, and dark.
And thanks for the picture comparison. It was so nicely shot I was debating whether it was a screencap or not. I guess it is still hard to judge though since I am viewing these pictures right now on an IPS monitor. Even if I viewed them on my s2 with superamoled, there's no guarantee with all the image processing from the camera and my phone, but the comparison makes its point in regards to the color differences between the modes.

Only movie mode disables the horrible sharpening artifacts. But out looks way too wash out and too warm. What I do is use power save level 1 in browser.
Wish there was a mode between Natural and Standard. Natural is just a tad bit too washed out, but Standard is way too overexposed.

I agree. Standard is oversaturated, while natural is undersaturated.
I voted dynamic, but i think it depends a lot on the wallpaper you have and its colors. if my wallpaper had vibrant colors I think I'd tone it down
There is however a too high blue tint on the screen. Can this be solved?
I'm really curious to see what devs can do about this and I agree that a mode between 'natural' and 'standard' is needed. Or better yet, the ability for users to set their own custom modes. I wonder too if it will be possible for devs to remove the white shadow that appears around text, especially over grey backgrounds.
With proper tweaking, I think the SGS3 screen will look as good as the one on the HOX but there's still a lot of work to be done...

The white shadows around text are sharpening artifacts. That looks bad enough but the sharpening also make text appears grey instead of black and lowers the contrast. Using the level 1 power saving mode in browser turns off the sharpening and improves text appearance but makes the display slightly bluish.

Is my screen faulty?

Hello all,
Last night I watched a show on my tablet in total darkness and noticed some weird banding which I thought was caused by the video itself but then I checked with the other apps and it was clear that it wasn't the video but the screen itself. Is my tab screen faulty? It's just over 3 weeks old for God's sake! Is anyone else experiencing the same issue or am I the only one?

those look like window reflections. Make a drawing, fill the entire screen with solid black, do you still see the banding? Do you have blue light filter on? If you still see it and you don't have any filters and you're sure it's not reflections, return it.
At low Brightness with night mode on mine is a bit patchy but yours seems worse. If it bothers you I would exchange and see if you get better luck next time
mine is solid black no pathing
That looks faulty

Hi guys. Thanks for your comments. I tried disabling the blue light filter. Also, it was pitch black in the room with no reflection anywhere.
Spoke with Samsung and it's going to be replaced.

Lowest brightness with blue light filter on ?
Can't help you as far as the screen is concerned, but nice choice about watching Succession, season 2 has been great.

Lowest brightness yes. Blue light no. I never use that. I surely would never use with video
I watch on mine in dark, complete black the screen is, no bleed etc.
Return it.
Hmmm I'm noticing similar to mine now even without blue light filter and normal brightness
Hey guys. Just an update. It's a bit of a long story but the tl;dr version is that I have got a new Tab S6 today and guess what? The same screen-bleed issue but on a different part of the screen.

I phoned the Samsung shop team and they were extremely helpful and arranged a replacement. However, I am very disappointed with the quality control. Does anyone know how I can raise this with Samsung so that something would be done at a higher level i.e. maybe there is a faulty batch or something?
Is that right from a factory reset without installing or restoring any apps? I have to wonder at this point if it's some software, These are amoled screens, there shouldn't be any bleed, there's no backlight. While some pixels can definitely fail what you're seeing on 2 tablets seems highly unlikely not random across the screen. Only other thing I can think of is you have something putting undue pressure on parts of the screen.

No. The pictures above are of the replacement tablet. I hadn't had the chance to transfer my settings or anything so it's factory formatted. All I did was turn on night mode at night and start the dialer app as well as other Samsung apps. Even the keyboard is brighter on one side than the other. I asked the other half to look and point out anything odd and she spotted it straightaway.
The tablet was literally out of the box. Barely stayed out of the box for an hour and there was nothing else pressed against it at all.

It's not bleed it's just uneven tints on the screen, very common and annoying as heck.
wow I've never seen anything like that on an oled or amoled screen. I have the S2,S3, S4, note 8, note 10+ and LG Oled and never seen anything even close.
What you have with the white, doesn't surprise me as much as the black as with black the pixels should be OFF.
The mate 20 pro was plagued with green screens like that. I believe they were lg oleds

By the way it's not pure black backgrounds, more dark greys, mine is similar and I believe they will all have it to some degree, seems to be a short coming with oled..it's only noticeable when displaying certain types of greys, at very low brightness, even worse with blue light filter on
Somewhat similar to what I'm experiencing, uneven black levels from corner to corner.
I'll try and get a replacement from the retailer, they give 30 days to return items so it shouldn't be an issue hopefully.
It's not awful, but once you notice it, you always notice it.
I have also the same, verry annoying. And for that price i espect something that works.
