I've been stock since i got the note and I'm thinking about finally rooting this thing. I don't really use root apps, i mostly only root for tethering and flashing roms. What's the best root method for flashing rom...I'm not 100% sure but i think I read a while back that the no flash counter root medthod is for those who don't plan on flashing roms.

okay just making sure i have this right.
i've backed up all my data, backed up my google account. just cuase im nervous.
now, do i use oneclick to root it.
once rooted, i flash the rom,
then i flash the kernal
and does the kernal have to by compatible with my model of i9100tdvkf2
ive been lurking forums but cant seem to find any answers :\
Seeing as you're a beginner, I'd recommend using CF Root. You flash it via Odin as a kernel, you get root, clockworkmod mod and it's simple!

thanks for the reply mate, i really just want to ROM it for the simple purpose that is getting a new ui/interface/feel to the phone haha. something flashy, or better battery's worth.
but cheers dude i will do that until i get a firmer understanding.
but just dont understand what kernal to use , the one that comes with it, or do i need to get one to match mine?
Kernel as per the instructions .
Custom rom as per the instructions .
Rooting custom roms or custom rom counter above zero will void your warranty .
Root + CWM .

I agree you should use cf root look for kf2 kernel flash via pda in odin really easy.

Thanks dudes i actually understand now that putting roms on and kernals etc, that's just rooting i thought to root was another process all together.
but it's just like saying MOdding i guess.
Some questions i have are, Are roms Kernal specific. EG
could i soft brick if i just used CFkernal. then flashed a rom afterwards?

It is you need to read the faqs and guides .
Rooting is rooting and not putting roms and kernels on.

Yes but unlikely but in your case more probable as you have failed to understand the very very basics .
Root using CWM and root and flash a custom rom afterwards via CWM is the normal route .

I put this together for someone else it worked for him here are the steps.....Give a BIG shout out to creepyncrawly for putting that guide out!!! Make sure you read that guide lots of great info... just follow the steps..... If you have any more questions just post them in this thread.
1. If you flash the 2c. "Odin3 One-Click Downloader Stock I-777 UCKH7 with Root no BL" (This will not trip the flash counter)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311081
2. Then install Mobile Odin Lite free version for XDA members it's at the bottom of the first post "MobileODINLite-v3.30.apk", you DON'T need the "FlashKernel i777 add on" to flash the kernel just Mobile Odin Lite. Once you flash your first ROM this all gets wiped anyways.. (You will need this to flash Entropy512 GB kernel just extract the zImage from the zip file and load it in the kernel slot in Mobile Odin and click flash kernel)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347899
3. Then flash Entropy's 3-7 GB kernel in Mobile Odin to get CWM (Before you flash your first ROM boot in to your new CWM recovery with the power off, hold vol+ vol- and power button till CWM boots and do a Nandroid back up)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1289460
4. Then you can flash any custom ROM you want from the DEV section!!

Thanks for a very useful post. I have been taking tentative steps towards rooting and your collection of links helped me crystallize what I was reading through all the various posts. One thing I would like to reconfirm is if I use Odin to flash stock/root (as indicated in Step1) and then use CWM to flash AOKP, I should not trigger the counter? Or should I use Odin to still flash AOKP. Got confused there. My S2 still has GB on it.

Your correct flashing stock+root will not trigger the counter.
Cant flash AOKP or any custom ROM for that mattter with ODIN.
All this stuff is listed in the sticky's and guides man. opening a new thread is ridiculous.

Yes you're safe it won't trip the flash counter... Once you use Mobile Odin lite to flash the custom kernel that contains CWM, you can then use CWM to flash any ROM you want and wont trip the flash counter.... I like AOKP but there are many good ROMS in the DEV section just read thru the threads see what problems people might be having etc. Good job on reading keep uP the good work!!! GL if you have any questions you can post them here.
EDIT I updated that post to make it a little easier to understand .... To confirm you will use Step 1 Odin Step 2 & 3 Mobile Odin Step 4. CWM Once your rooted step 1. you wont have CWM yet that's where steps 2 & 3 come in, finally to get to step 4. with out ever tripping the flash counter!!!
I'm on 100% Stock Rom this is my 2nd note Device ATT Version I717

I'm still under Warrinity is there any way to put any rom without increase the Counter #
How do I void the Counter #
Is there a special Odin Software that will not increase Counter #
Can someone point me to the right direction I looked all over XDA Forums I didn't find a thing how to void counter increase.
I would like to keep it at 0 at all times....

Your counter will increase, but there are methods and tools that will fix that taking it back. If you are worried about your Warranty, then rooting or flashing should not be done, but here the link for the GNote Super Page with all the tools needed and or required.

Without Rooting please explain please
I though you have Root to use any Rom?
If you can flash any rom without rooting does this mean that it will not increase counter #.
Thanks....
Flashing a ROM in cwm will not increase the counter. When you flash something in Odin it will. That counter reset zip is supposed to be flashed in a custom recovery(cwm, twrp). You only need a custom recovery to flash a ROM, not root. You flash cwm through Odin. That will increase your counter by one. You can then flash the reset zip in recovery to get it back to zero. Then you can flash all the ROMs you want through recovery without increasing the counter.

K got the file for CWR directly from Clockwork Recovery Site it was the same version he had on the Forum as well.
here what I'M understanding
First I got to make sure all the USB Drivers all up to date which is all up to date. & latest version of Samsung Kies too..
Plug my phone with the USB Cable into Computer wait until shows SGH-I717
use Odin 1.85 software and use pda to flash the CWR not to check the Start Button yet.
Put my phone into Recovery mode.
Once in Recovery Mode then hit start and do not change any settings.
After it's flashed
then I got to install the ATT Flash Counter Reset though CWR that will put my counter down from 1 to default correct.
Then put the rom in the sd card and same with ATT Flash Counter & Gapps latest version
First Thing to install is
1) CWR Recovery though Odin
2) Install ATT Flash Counter Reset though CWR
3) Install Jelly Bean Rom
4)Install Gapps
Is this correct information?
Should I not touch my kernel just leave it alone too.
You got it ....
Simply follow the information in the root thread and your Good...
I don't know about the kernel, as I don't use that rom. But the rom thread will give you the information you need ....g

my suggestion to every new user to ROMs and flashing
read until your eyes bleed, your fingers fall off and your ball sack shrivels into dust!
read read read.....research read and research the research.
If you are even remotely afraid of snarfing up your device then re read what you read and then read it again.
Great to ask questions and most will be helpful but get your melon into your puter screen and hit every link given every resource possible.
And remember, NO one is responsible for what you or I do to our devices. We ALL do this knowing full well the risks.
Welcome to the Note forums. And everyone has given you sound advice already.

Hey guys new to this device coming from another device forum which was not a Samsung however I am familiar with Odin and ways to use it. I don't care about raising my counter at all I just want to root and install the latest cwm that way I can flash all the ROMs I please. My question is this. Is there an updated method to doing all this is one swoop with Odin imputting all nessecary files at once and flashing with Odin in download mode? If so can someone point md in the direction of the thread explaining this and the files I would need for Odin? I have the attached sgh i717 and my baseband and build both match at UCLA1. Apparently the guy I bought it from never updated it.. thanks in advance guys for all the help, I really appreciate it.

Root method is the same as it has always been. Easiest here:
http://rootgalaxynote.com/galaxy-no...y-note-sgh-i717-icsgingerbreadeasiest-method/
Now after I use Odin to flash cwm and then I use that to flash a safe kernel of my choice to be able to flash the rom of my choice? And what is the most compatible kernel or most recommended at this time.
Sent from my att galaxy note using xda premium
You do not have to flash a kernel if you do not wish. Use Odin to flash CWM recovery and then use CWM to install Super User. You are all done and rooted. Flashing a kernel is optional. There are many to choose from. What works best for you depends on what you want to do such as overclock or installing a specific ROM, or extra modding ability.
I am using a Samsung Galaxy S3 i9300 which is rooted from CF-Root 6.4 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238) and I have some questions before I flash my first custom ROM. I have researched these questions on Google, YouTube and through all these threads and I cannot find any answers. Therefore any help on these would be much appreciated.
1) Do I need to update my CWM Recovery to the newest version before I flash Jellybam 8.3.0? (P.S. the CF-Root thread states "Not compatible with ROM Manager ! Use the CWM Manager provided instead (installed by CF-Root automatically)" I assume this means I cannot update CWM Recovery through ROM Manager.
2) Will flashing this ROM remove my root privileges? Will I have to re-root through Odin again?
3) Do I have to use Triangle Away if I manage to successfully flash Jellybam ROM? This is because I heard resetting your flash counter is dangerous.
4) Do I need to have BusyBox installed? Tried to research this and I do not understand what this does.
5) Are there any other precautions to take bearing in mind this is going to be my first flashing of a custom ROM?
Any help on these questions would be much, much appreciated. Sorry in advance if I've posted this in the wrong section or I've broke any other XDA rules. Also, apologies if you're offended by how much of a noob I am. Thanks.

1 please don't bother with rom manager but you need latest cwm anyway (or better yet, philz advanced cwm in my signature) to be sds safe
2 root is in the rom. When you flash a rom, the entire rom is replaced - root files included. However, custom roms are all rooted anyway so you'd be replacing the root with root.
Please note, jellybam discussion is banned on xda
3 its not really dangerous. It needs to be done before returning it to stock
4 many root apps use busybox to function. Most custom roms have busybox anyway
5 read, read, read. Read all the stickies and guides in general. Read them twice. Before doing anything you don't understand, search. If you can't find, ask. Its easier to teach knowledge than to fox broken phones

Thanks so much for this reply. Just need some clarification on some points if you don't mind.
1) How should I go about updating my CWM Recovery? What's the best and safest method?
2) What is SDS?
3) If it isn't an issue, could you tell me why Jellybam discussion is banned on XDA?
So grateful for this invaluable info. Thanks a lot!
1. Like rootSU allready suggested, use PhilZ Recovery. Visit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2002953 and read the first and second post. These explain step by step how to do it.
2. SDS stands for Sudden Death Syndrom. For more information on this topic visit this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1993044
There you can also check if your phone could be affected.
3. Sorry bro, can't help you on that one since I don't know myself.
As for 3 jellybam, I didn't see it myself - but apparently the developer used the work of others without credit. I read, passing it as his own work. I wasn't here so I can't say anything more than that
