Hi all, I have a non-rooted, stock Galaxy Nexus. I noticed that "Unlock 'em Angry Birds" is able to access /data/data to modify the saved files and unlock the levels. "File Expert" seems to be able to copy APK files from /data/app. How is it possible? Those two directories aren't visible with Astro or via adb. I thought they were protected and apps couldn't read them in general. The fact that "File Expert" can copy APK files is especially surprising.
Thanks!

So I'm new to android and the tb but managed to root mine and have some fun, but how do I go about finding all files associated with a particular program? Specifically I uninstalled what I thought was Visual voice mail, but to my surprise it remains. Any help?
Thanks
Dave
You can try different file managers, astro pro or root explorer.
Use root explorer or astro, as stated above. Apps that came pre-installed on your phone are located in the /system/app folder, while apps that you installed yourself are in /data/app. If you are trying to uninstall something from the /system/app folder, I would recommend just renaming the apk from "appname.apk" to "appname.apk.bak" (This essentially uninstalls the app, while backing it up).
Some apps in the system folder can cause problems if they are renamed. If you do have any problems from a renamed app you can just use adb from recovery to remove the ".bak" extension and you are back to square one! If you are worried about space, you can go ahead and delete the file completely as long as you have successfully rebooted with no issues after renaming the file(s). Hope this helps!
Thanks a lot, I'm as far from a programmer/developer as you can get but I'm excited to learn now that I finally have a phone worth voiding the warranty on!
I hate those default Pics, music etc ASUS or whoever have put them and now I can't delete them from Filemanager...
How to delete any of the files I want ?
use root explorer to delete them. don't go deleting system/stock apps or your future OTA updates will fail.
I tried but says on those 17 default pics, "delete failed"...
BTW, why in file manager there is so bunch of stuff listed there, not organized... and you have no idea what is for what...
I tried FileManager HD - much better look/organization, also reports same error, failed to delete. Now in this app you can see next to file this: -rw
Are those files protected or something? pics and mp3's by default which I can't delete have that.
Thanks!
PS - Android -ICS, has folders listed totally wrong, you have system files listed with normal other folders which confuses normal people what is what and finding what they need to find. They should put ALL system files under 1 folder and make a tree of folders there and not in root put all folders there and leave up to us to manage in that bush
is your device rooted? and did you put it in read/write mode? otherwise it wont be able to delete the files
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using XDA Premium HD app
You must set your file explorer to mount system files in read/write mode, by default they are set to read only. See in preferences menu.
Hello,
I have a bunch of voice recordings that are in my sounds folder, (m4a and 3ga files) when using the Samsung Voice Note App. If I record a new one it shows up but once I move them between sound folders (internal or external) they dont show up within the app anymore. Is there a way to refresh or should I be using Root Explorer to push them somehow? I tried using the stock file manager app and Astro. Almost like its not refreshing...
Any help appreciated

Hello,
When you're copying it to the External Storage, where are you copying them to? Is there a file called ".nomedia" in the folder where these items are located (or in a high-level folder)? If that ".nomedia" file is present, apps won't notice anything in that folder (or it's subfolders) when they scan for media. This prevents apps like gallery from seeing the various thumbnails that are throughout the storage.
If you don't see them in your file explorer, you may need to turn on "Show Hidden Files" in the settings.
Hope this helps!

I didn't realize someone responded til today. I appreciate that! That did help because now I know why it wasn't working. Now my question is is there a workaround for removing that .nomedia file? Its not allowing me to do anything. Any suggestions?

I've never had issues deleting .nomedia files... Does your root explorer actually have root access?
Where are you trying to copy these files? Maybe you can create a new folder (sans .nomedia file) and stick them in there. Just remember, if there are any "parent" folders that have the .nomedia in them, it won't search the subfolders for media.

Your the man! Root explorer wouldn't delete it and I kept getting this message View attachment 2784852
so then I ended up deleting it from the stock file manager and it worked. I would of never figured that out without your help. I kept seeing the. nomedia. file but ignored it. I don't even know where it came from, just glad that worked.
Hello,
I do not know how I get them, but in my TitaniumBackup folder on /sdcard all files have 1.1.1970 timestamp and I can not delete them. I tried to call chmod, but also this gives error "permission denied".
Does anybody know how I can remove/fix these files on the root-shell? In general filesystem is fine. I can install new apps, copy files, create folder and so on. But there are these dead files
Greetings
Update: I was able to delete the files with the FileManager inside of TWRP. Problem solved
Hi
I removed an app from my phone
I connected my phone to my computer and checked if there are any left over files, and yes there are
I am trying to remove the app folder in Phone->Android->Data
It gives me this error: "cache_blablabla cannot be removed: the storage location is write protected. Remove the protection and try again"
Could I somehow get administrator permission so I can remove it?
@denniserino
AFAIK only folder /sdcard/Android/data exists, the folder where system-apps & Google Play store data. This folder is read-only. Hence you have to mount it as read-write before changing its content.

@jwoegerbauer
How can I do that?
@denniserino
If your phone is rooted either use Root Explorer or Total Commander. Both are excellent file explorers, IMHO.
