Hi,
I am a NOOB at android - the Jetstream being my 1st android device. Have come across some queries and was hoping that more experienced users and developers would be able to clear things out and may be even help us move further with our device - while HTC seems to have abandoned us more or less. To my understanding, getting S-OFF would enable us to write or mount any rom from any carrier onto our devices without the issue of having problems with compatibility, etc. Achieving root was the 1st step towards that. It would enable us to literally port another devices rom onto our device. Am I right?
It seems that Unknownforce and some others (sorry for not having mentioned them all as the list seemed quite exhaustive) have managed to downgrade their HBOOT to 1.50 on their HTC EVO 3D, and from there managed to achieve S-OFF which earlier seemed un-achievable with the newer version of HBOOT that HTC has been rolling out with their devices. Link is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1547695
So, want to ask/request anyone if they would know if this procedure could be applied for the Jetstream as well and enable us to get S-OFF? Could anyone please help figure this out or help point us in the right direction?
Thanks to all who help out.
I am convinced that the development for Jetstream has reached its end, if it really got going. There are two or three ROMs. There just wasn't a community for the jetstream to gain enough interest and momentum for ROMs and Mods. The attention that it did get here was due to the ~$1,000.00 bounty that was on it for Rooting. All all attention will be on the ONE series in a few weeks.
I use my Jetstream daily. Wish it had a better presence in the android world as its such a beautiful device. But, I would love to see more development, just not on the edge of my seat expecting it.
If we could get some people with the device to volunteer and work with it for some development, it would be really good. I for 1 am willing to help any way I can with whatever limited knowledge I have. As Task650 has the device, we.could perhaps ask him for help/help him out. May be if we could get this method of s off to work, things could change. Now that the device costs lesser also, it may be hope for change for the better.

I own a jetstream too. Bought 900usd without contract. I love it but hope there will be ics soon. I really want to s-off this device as I mantioned in several topics here. Hope someone do it.

We all hoping for it. If some dev could look into the method used to get the EVO 3D S-OFF and see if it is sound or would be able to work or something, may be we could move it further. I for one am a NOOB with no knowledge whatsoever about coding, programming and the sort. So can not make head or tail of the logic behind it. Link again is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1547695
So I PMed Unknownforce who is the creater for the thread I shared on the 1st post. His process for obtaining s-off as he said could work for an emmc device. I am unsure if the Jetstream is such a device but I think it probably is. Next, the hboot basically determines how the device accesses its partitions and is unique for each device. Hence, we can not flash the hboot of flyer or another device onto the Jetstream and try patching from there. He said it may work if the chip used is the same, but he wasn't too sure either. So, it means that we will have to figure out another way to obtain S-OFF. Anyways, we can hope that it will happen. And thanks to Unknownforce for taking time to answer some questions and trying to help out.

Edit: Couldn't upload better resolution pictures due to size constraints. have sized them down. if you need better resolution pictures, will email them to you if needed.

Hi, you asked for the pictures. I have posted them but don't know if this is what you meant or you needed something.else. also, don't know what you needed them for. If you could please share what your plans are it would be much appreciated. Thanks for the reply in advance.

Does anyone know how to contact globatron? He asked for these pictures for a reason I think. However have not heard from him or anything else whatsoever. We can't pm him so any alternate modes of contacting him to know what his plans were/are and if any development on that till now?
He has been able to figure out new method to obtain S-OFF for devices. So perhaps it would work for Jetstream too?

I read about the "Juopunutbear S-OFF" at http://www.xda-developers.com/andro...ht-juopunutbear-s-off-most-htc-2011s-line-up/ and it seems that what globatron would be looking for is probably the pictures of the board without the overlying plastic. The procedure involves a wire trick. So for that, I think he would require a pciture with the back removed, the screws undone. Unfortunately due to exams I am unable to devote much time for the next few weeks. Could anyone please check it out and post the pictures he actually requested for?
Thanks in advance and hope that he would be able to do something with them and get us S-OFF.

Hi, there is 1 Lucky person with an S-OFF Jetstream - BIGMOH. Is it possible to know what the difference is between his and our devices and thereby work backwards to gain S-OFF for us too? I did PM him and he has agreed to help us out the best he can. Neither do I nor does he have much of a knowledge about all this. Could some developer please help us out? DoomLord? Task650? Globatron?

Wrong section, please pay attention to where you are posting next time.
In regards to your question, there really isn't an "easier way". The AlphaRev tool is one of the easiest I have ever seen. I suppose if that is too hard you could void your warranty and go the HTC route(Not Recommended).
i already did it with HTC. i want clockwork or something.

Since you followed HTC's method you are stuck as of right now. Their method unlocks your bootloader, but still has a NAND lock keeping you from flashing to different partitions. This situation is similar to the OG Evo if I'm not mistaken. Just wait around and a root method should appear.

You will see claims from people in these forums that they were able to root and install recovery using HTC's unlocking, but those are false claims. All of those posters had been previously rooted using revolutionary.io. No one that took the OTA on a phone that hadn't previously been unlocked have been successful installing a custom recovery.
Basically you have an unlocked bootloader, now you will have to wait for someone to come up with an exploit like "rage against the cage" from the Evo to unlock the nand and attain s-off. If you had the original Evo 4g you will remember that in order to root you had to use unrevoked or Toast's method. Something similar to that will now be needed.
For those reading this your best option is to hold off using HTC's unlocker and if you haven't taken the 2.08 update use revolutionary.io to unlock your phone and if you did take the update or have a phone that came with the update, wait for an update to revolutionary.io.

I completely agree that many of the new users do often get a bit excited and "rush" to root or unlock their devices (without fully understanding or reading directions) and end up in a lurch. But not a single person on this forum should log in to make a person feel bad or incompetent. If you see someone that jumped the gun and is lost, please help them. If you can't, then just let someone who can do it. We are all here to learn and help each other out. Let's stick to that and everyone will be happy.

Amen! I totally agree.
Furthermore, vBulletin, phpBB, Wiki* and most technologies used to share and publish information and content are just terribly inefficient in regards to topics like these (Android, rooting, development, tech, etc.). Newcomers simply can not come into forums like these and find the info or content they want consistently. You can tag, break stuff up into sub-forums and make stickies like 3M 'til your blue in the face but until you fully understand a noob's thought process and behavior and have the software reflect that we forever will have these problems.
One temporary resolution is to try to change the one variable we can change in this equation. That is to try to cease the negative comments since we already know noobs and their questions are a constant.
Do not use the HTC root method, just use the Revolutionary method and before doing so download and copy TWRP and a ROM and flash in HBOOT\Recovery
root with s-on
Like an idiot, I unlocked my bootloader via official HTC way. I have not rooted my phone with revolutionary, my phone was completely stock. I was able to flash CWM via fastboot and install superuser via CWM.
I just had a suggestion, we should just make it simple for this fine phone and devs
or someone should develop a simple unrevoked root and unlock method just like the evo uses.
Current methods are rediculous, all though i got it done, its a hassle for others.
We need to get clockwork through rom manager and get this phone goin with some rom development
the hassle of unlocking bootloader is to much!!

Guys, let's not let this forum get away from us. I've been apart of other forums that have been ruined by this same sense of entitlement. This stuff will all happen but you have to be patient. The Photon has only been out a very short time.
Besides, rooting is a very simple procedure with ADB. As Shabby said, the one click is on the way. Ticking off the developers is not the way to get things done faster. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect. Please remember that before posting nonsense like this.

Obviously written by someone who didn't have an Evo on launch day, and doesn't remember that Unrevoked wasn't out until the phone had been out for quite some time. The original root method for the Evo was considerably more difficult than the new Photon method.

Totally agree. He had a suggestion, he did not insult anybody's intellectual property, nor did he directly or indirectly insult any dev for not putting out good work. He simply indicated that current methods are a little involved and that in an ideal environment, we should strive for simplicity. I don't know any dev worth their salt who isn't compelled to debug their code, to improve it, and to learn from their mistakes. Frankly I'm a little surprised at the reaction. Especially the comment about wanting to put the OP "out of his misery." Where I come from, any analogy to terminating somebody's life is incendiary and uncalled for.
no it wasnt a suggestion, it was a call to the devs to hurry up and make things.

as a general suggestion, i'd recommend to never abandon hope. if their irc channel, their main location they advertize to contact them, doesnt provide information on their status, i'm not sure you'll find any other *insider* information on XDA regarding their status. they generally keep a fairly tight knit group.
i haven't heard any insider information either. i would hope they're working on a method for hboot 1.5 but might not be making it a top priority since htc has released an unlock method and revalphax does cover a number of devices. even though htc's method is not the same and not as "thorough" it still works and allows the basics.
maybe somebody will correct me and we'll all get an update! hope that helps!

You're risking that you brick your phone.
Also, I wouldn't suggest rooting if you don't even know some of the benefits of rooting. If you aren't technically inclined enough to have a reason to want to root, don't root. You're bound to mess something up.

If you're interested in gaining a general base on root, I have a free educational application in the market called "All About Root". It will provide general details to explain terminology, pros/cons, common methods as well as some technical details around setuid/setgid and Linux based permissions.
After gaining a general foundation, it will be easier to learn more specifically about the EVO 3D. This HTC device is more difficult to gain root access on than many other Android devices. With this is mind, the process *can* be safe and easy, BUT for a beginner without a technological/Android/Linux background, it can be very difficult.
Either way, there is no *easy* way to learn as the learning process is different for everybody. Almost can guarantee a lot of reading will be involved with the EVO 3D.
Hope that helps and good luck!

Good to see a helping hand in here
If a lot of people are not aware.. in the UK there is a very cheap sale for HTC EVO 3D's on the go at present (£229 for a decent sim unlocked phone, which is pretty darn cheap here), so this section is likely to get a lot of new comer's asking questions. Probably better to welcome them than shout at them

Either way, there is no *easy* way to learn as the learning process is different for everybody. Almost can guarantee a lot of reading will be involved with the EVO 3D.
Hope that helps and good luck!

Hello, Some poor soul posted (BELOW) this YEARS ago, and never got any help (other than the single, typical, 'go search' 'reply', NOT MUCH HELP when you DON'T KNOW THE FILE-NAME)
I'll just repeat what he said, it's the same thing i'm looking for. I just want 1080p video record on the device, I don't have time to learn another new technical speciality... I can only use official ROMS, None of the half-baked, home-brewed partial ROMS that come with lists of hands in the air, (i didn't do it) warnings of problems and bricking no thanks,.. (right?)
I don't know what 'S-OFF' means and it could takes months to find out here as the simplest of questions can go YEARS w/ no decent attention, I've never seen a forum like this one, One guy actually has 'I WILL IGNORE STUPID QUESTIONS' as his SIGNATURE.... There are no Stupid questions, only stupid Punks who hoarde info because the info TIDBIT (Small as it is, like their EGO...),, its the only thing they have to Feel Important...
I'm hoping this can be a simple double click, wait and done. It is an old phone I took apart, replaced half the innards and screen and now it works, it would be whatever original stuff it came with, I don't need any data on it...
THE POOR SOULS UN-ANSWERED REQUEST:
"Hi all. I'm new to xda. I have been trying to manually update my HTC EVO 4G LTE to Android 4.3, however HTC is no longer hosting the files. I was wondering if anyone knew where i could download HTC's software update?
It used to be here tinyurl.com/n279mpk
The link would download a 866MB executable. Thank you for any advice.."
As you can CLEARLY see, HE DOES NOT KNOW the name of the file, SO being told to Search is useless, NOTHING is EVER Explained Here,.. I find it PATHETIC that this community let that question lapse for YEARS with that single RESPONSE, SHAME ON YOU. HANG YOUR SELFISH HEADS IN SHAME. How is he, or Me or Anyone New, to EVEN KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE:
"SPRINT HTC EVO 4G LTE ANDROID DEVELOPMENT" Category, and the:
"SPRINT HTC EVO 4G LTE ORIGINAL ANDROID DEVELOPMENT" Category.... All Greek to anyone not ALREADY IN THE KNOW, HENCE THE QUESTION 2 YEARS AGO.....
So The NON-ORIGINAL category is What? New Ones? and the ORIGINAL category is for Original Copies of Official HTC Releases? OR Perhaps ORIGINAL, Means not ORIGINAL, BUT NEW? OR,... I certainly don't see any CLUES in the categories:
InsertCoin Sense, JEWEL CyanogenMod 12.1, PAC-ROM LP-MR1 Beta3 Weeklies,
NONE OF THIS SAYS:
HTC 4G 4.3 Approved APk 866MB executable formerly hosted at tinyurl.com/n279mpk (OR WHATEVER...) AND NEITHER SEEMS LIKE IT WOULD HAVE A LINK TO ANYTHING OFFICIAL!??!
SO WHY SEND SOMEONE BLINDLY TO "SEARCH" YOU THINK HE WASN'T SEARCHING ALREADY?
THIS PLACE MAN, THIS PLACE.... YOUNG INSECURE MALES HOARDING INFO BECAUSE IT BOLSTERS THEIR WEANING EGO AND NO OTHER REASON.
I NEVER SEE ANYONE GET ANY HELP HERE SO WHAT THE HELL IS THE DAMN POINT?
If there is a GOOD, Android 4.3+ UPDATE FOR STANDARD SPRINT HTC 4G, (NOT USED AS A PHONE, ONLY A TELESCOPE AND MICROSCOPE EYEPIECE CAMERA) That doesn't have strange 'rooting' (?) or S-OFF (?) Requirements then PLEASE, Let Me and the next 100 People to come here, KNOW !
Check out my HTC EVO 4G LTE Hboot guide in my signature. It has a lot of good info contained in it.
As far as updating to Android 4.3, there is a RUU available to do so. You can find it in the aforementioned Hboot guide, along with instructions on how to install it. The instructions can be found in the RUU section of my Hboot guide. The RUU is from HTC and does not require S-off or a rooted device.

Thanks! GOT IT! Thanks!
Glad to help.
Were there any other questions about definitions or specific help with the HTC Evo 4G LTE (Jewel)?
I'd be happy to help. Anything from "What is a ROM?" to "How can I post a patch to gerrit?" I have written a couple of guides in the past, and I have done work to make custom ROMs easier to build for this device (hopefully "answering" many questions for you).
Feel free to post here, in the different ROM forums, or message me.
