[Q] How to disable "adfree" - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an AOKP based rom. I love it for its speed & battery-friendliness.
But... It comes with Ad free. This conflicts with some of my apps and I want to get rid of ad free.
Could anybody tell me how to?
TIA

When you open adfree it says restore/return to former hosts or something like that.
Think it`s the 2nd item in top right corner of the menu. Click on that and the former settings will be applied and adds will be visible again.

Thanks for the reply. However the "adfree" in the rom is not an app, it is embedded, something like "tweaked hosts"...

Judging by your reply I'm going to guess your technical ability is low, so I'd suggest following the advice above and installing one of the ad blockers and tapping disable inside it, this will give you what you desire without too much messing around.

[Q] Strange Notifications...

So I've been receiving these strange notifications periodically that are "recommending" bizarre applications. The notification looks like a star, and when pressed sends me to an application in the market. I've been on android for quite a while and I have never had this happen before, so I'm wondering if anyone has had similar problems. Or maybe this is some "feature" that I'm not aware of.
I was reading in the Vibrant forums about something that seemed similar, and in that case it was caused by a separate application. I wanted to throw it out to the t-bolt community and see if anyone has experienced this and/or knows what would cause it.
Also, if this is something that has been previously discussed, I give you permission to flame me. My several google searches didn't bring anything up. Thanks in advance.
As a side note, I am knowingly marking this thread as a question while knowing that there are no question marks in the actual post. I think the question is inferred (this could possibly spur some philosophical debates).
It sounds like one of your installed apps is using AirPush to put ads on your notification bar. I'd check the apps you installed or updated recently to see if any of them are known to do this. I believe there are also some apps that can detect which installed programs are using AirPush as well, but I haven't tried any of them personally. If you search for AirPush, you'll see more info about it, as well as learn that it is basically universally reviled by users.
This is definitely AirPush. It sends ads straight to your notifications so as the person above me said, you should check out your recently installed/updated apps to see if any have this enabled. It's a pain in the ass to have that little icon up there all the time.
OP, don't be so quick to be flamed
I don't know where it is or how to get it (I assume the air push website) but apparently you can get a tool, so to speak, from air push that will opt you out of the ads and stop them from pushing notifications to your phone. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful as to where to acquire this, but what I read said that it's provided by air push themselves.
Sent from my HTC Thunderbolt
AirPush opt out
Thanks for the quick replies. I found out that there's an app in the Android Market made by AirPush, Inc. themselves that allows you to opt out. I installed it, and I'll see if it solves the problem.
As far as the flaming goes, I figure some people just need to get it out of their system, so I was giving those people an excuse.
Thanks again for the replies.

"Real" 3g on/off switch

Hi all
So I read it's not possible to have a widget that switches with one klick between 3g on and off (GSM only). In the market, there are only shortcuts to be found that lead me directly to that setting. I still have to leave my homescreen and do like 3 more klicks or so to chose and it takes time.
Is there a way to have a one-klick-switch when I'm rooted? If not, is it doable via custom roms? If so, which (good) ones do have it?
It doesn't seem to bother most people here, but on my iphone I had this and it extended my battery life A LOT as I keep 3g switched off for just cheking emails or messaging in whats app.
I use an app called "APNDroid". It changes your APN settings with a simple press.
There should be a Widget named "Power Control" installed that you can use (at least it exists with CM7 on my Optimus One P500)... while adding it you will be asked to chose the functions it's supposed to manage: just turn anything but 2G/3G and voilĂ : Your own little 2G/3G widget. (and no, it doesn't just take you to the options panel).
Great, that's what I was looking for! Now please tell me there is a free way to do this because of both Apps/Widgets mentioned I can only find paid versions!
I'm new to Android but this is something I'm beginning to hate For many many features that you could enable on a jailbreaked iphone for free you have to pay on android. Because of Cydia was kind of "illegal" ad only some users had it, stuff was mostly free. Here they throw everything in the market and demand money for it.
"Power Control" is free... well, at least it came with CM. If you can't find i I can just upload the APK.

That would be nice, I can only see "Power control Plus Widget" which is paid.
Danke!
Bitteschön.
Thanks. Any advice on where to put this on my card? I'm new to android so I don't know where those things go exactly
Just visit this page with your Android Browser and tap the attachment.

When I click it in the standard android browser, it says "The content is not supported on the phone. No application can be found to open this file". I downloaded it anyway and when i want to open the file it says "Cannot open file"
EDIT: Ok with the XDA app it recognised the apk file and I can open it. BUT, on top it says "News & Weather" and says this is an system application and if I want to replace it. Did you upload the wrong apk?
Whoops, possible... I've had a little trouble figuring out which apk provides the widget. I'll look into it.
and, found it?

[Q] Customizing the drop down bar.

First off, I apologize if this has been covered before in a thread. I spent about a half hour searching for my answer and was not able to either find it or understand which answer I was looking for.
I have in Taiwan a:
S3 GT-I9300
4.1.2
I9300XXELLA
3.0.31-899179
Rooted
No custom rom
(not sure what else you guys need to know)
I was simply curious if someone would point me in the right direction for the following problems. I use reverse tethering quite often with my smart phone as my office does not have WIFI and I enjoy watching sports games on my phone or listening to the radio broadcasts. I have a plan with a 5GB data limit and the video will eat that up pretty fast. So, whenever I use reverse tether, want to check for available wifi, or do any USB/Blue tooth tethering I have to go two or three menues deep into my settings and it's a tad annoying.
Is there a way I can customize the top drop down menu to replace some of the UI icons with ones that I actually want to use such as, "enable usb tether" or "see available wifi signals" or "turn on wifi hotspot?" I could remove Blocking Mode, or AllShare Cast as I never use them.
While I'm able to root phones (easy enough) I'm pretty clueless about custom Roms, how to use them, which ones are good, how to keep my phone protected when using them etc. There is such a huge amount of information about customizing the S3 on these forums, I just didn't know how to wade through it all to get the one customization that I want.
Again, sorry if I couldn't find the threat where this was discussed, and if there is a thread that answers this question well, I would appreciate someone pointing me in the right direction.
Cheers!
Not 100% sure, but maybe have a look into JKay Delux (you have to find the version for your firmware though). Otherwise another option could be to create a shortcut for your home screen via tasker that brings you directly into that menu.

Does tasker allow you to create shortcuts for any phone command? If so, that might be what I need.

if I am not wrong, most of them yes. At least it lets you control most of the functions (if you add Secure Settings PlugIn even more.)

Chrome Won't Stop Suggesting Web Apps

Hi all. Not sure if this is exactly the right spot, but I thought I'd try.
So I did the WTF upgrade on my V30+, and after having set everything up, I'm left with a REALLY annoying artifact/feature.
Every time I visit a page on MSN.com or on Reddit.com and scroll down the page to read more, these websites ask me to install their app. I've tried saying no. I've tried saying yes, but then not installing. I've tried cancelling out. I've tried reinstalling Chrome and then tried Chrome Dev. No matter what I do (short of installing the apps, which I did not try), the web pages will continue to suggest that I download the app on EVERY SINGLE PAGE I VISIT ON THEIR SITES.
Suffice to say, I"m really annoyed at this "feature" and was wondering if anyone knows how to either get rid of it or suppress it once and for all. If it doesn't stop, I'm considering changing my default browser to something else.
Firefox Nightly and Brave Browser are two full featured browsers that give you more control of what displays on your screen.
May I suggest Adaway ad blocker for rooted devices?? Your post made no mention if you are using any ad block software!! It looks like a "sponsored" ad, nasty buggers!!:fingers-crossed:

Yep. I have AdAway running.
I also get those when javascript is allowed ...
Use a browser which can disable javascript - such as "Naked Browser",
or use e.g. Firefox with UBlock Origin in +/-"advanced user" mode and disable java scripts globally, then case by case allow them - this should prevent these kind of incidences by default

I tried to disable javascript, but that somehow also disabled all of the images on webpages from loading!

not sure which webbrowser you used - but yeah, the web nowadays is stupid - loading all stuff via external frames, external sites, etc.
you, of course, can circumvent those message via using e.g. reddit app or having it installed (not sure if merely installing it would make that message stop).
Another way would be to load the "desktop version" of the site, in that case, it shouldn't be displayed neither
Maybe I just miss my very out-of-date LG G3 experience where it didn't know how to deal with any of this. Heh.
Thanks for all of the suggestions, folks. I appreciate it. I'll keep playing around with Chrome and alternative browsers to see if there's a way to get it to where I want.

Strange semi-stealthy malware that hides itself

Hi all,
So here's the situation: I have a Pixel 1 with stock (read: overbloated verizon) android. Whatever, I'm lazy and I haven't gotten around to rooting it. I installed a firewall recently for giggles. I'm going through the system apps and merrily blocking verizon junkware when I come across this thing (bear with me for the complete description, as XDA's spam filters are blocking my image links)
It's a system process called 'nobody' with a version number of 10. The Netguard app also gives a number above the name (i don't know what it's supposed to mean) that for most apps seems sort of random, but for this app is 9999.
I try to find this thing in my system app manager, and it's nowhere to be found.
So I keep on keeping on, thinking 'weird, but whatever', and then I come across another app called 'root' with a version number of 10 and (maybe it's a process id?) of 0.
Also, nowhere to be found.
And here's the thing; there's a gear icon in Netguard, that for _every other app_, opens up the system app manager page for that app. For these two? Nothing.
Now, I am not super proficient in android stuffs. My questions for you smart and pretty people are these:
1. How can I go about digging around in my phone to find the files that are running this thing?
2. What's the best way to get more information on what this is? (and yeah, I tried googling 'nobody' and 'root'. It went predictably).
3. How can I prepare a report / who would I send this to? There's gotta be security researchers who could use logs pertaining to this ****.
Yeah, I know that I need to nuke & pave the device. I will. I want to try and recon a little first. So, what do you got?
