B&N has announced 1.41 will be automatically rollling out to Tablet starting yesterday actually and early reports indicate it prevents sideloading of non B&N apps.
Is there a known method to block the 1.41 update?
Thanks!
Required Apps:
- Root Explorer (in market)
- SQLite Editor (in market)
Process:
1. Open Root Explorer
2. Open devicemanager.db from (/data/data/com.bn.devicemanager/databases/devicemanager.db)
3. Select "registry" - this should open up a spreadsheet looking file
4. Find row: com.bn.device.fota.mode
5. Drag over to the column labeled "value"
6. Press and hold "auto" until the "Actions" window pops up
7. Select "Edit Field"
8. Replace auto with manual
9. Select "Save"
not my post just info from forums how to block otas the easy way.
source that an update is coming to the Nook Tablet? And source for these early reports?
Only updates I'm seeing are for the Nook Color.
It has been posted on the official Barnes & Noble community forums.
hxxp://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/t5/NOOK-Tablet-General-Discussion/Software-Update-1-4-1-posted/td-p/1242366/jump-to/first-unread-message
Well, if that's the case I'll probably be giving up the NT and will let the school I work for have it to go along w/their 5 NCs.
The update does indeed close off the installation of 3rd party apps. I'd post a link to it but it won't let me.
before everyone starts jumping off the wagon, how about someone verifies if they've received their update, and then attempts to sideload. there's nothing on there that CONFIRMS it, just speculation.
So can anyone actually confirm that changing the "com.bn.device.fota.mode" from auto to manual actually works and that it successfully blocked the 1.41 update?
I've seen a lot of threads about using that method, but no actual posts about whether it works or not. Just a lot of mentions about how theoretically it should, etc.
I made the change I've got my fingers crossed that my nook won't update, but I won't know for sure until I'm back home where there's wifi. Until then, just wondering if anyone out there can confirm that this method of blocking OTAs actually works.

Yes, that's the 64k question. Hoping we have a volunteer who is willing to take the risk. Apparently this is an automatic update with no prior warning and you are not prompted whether to accept or deny the update.
If mine does update, I think I'll be restoring and returning.
Very kind of Barnes and Noble to extend their return window for the holidays.
For anyone who hasn't seen that info yet, here ya go:

Yes, I can personally confirm that the update does indeed disable sideload apps. It also removes root access.
Just to confirm, my sideloaded apps still work, they just made it so you can't install any new ones...

Well this is good news anyhow.
I'm not suggesting that I'm in any way pleased with this turn of events, but it's good that we can at least continue to use the apps we've already installed.
And with any luck, otas will be blocked via the fota method and this will all be moot.

Did you try to to use anycut or a shortcut to the app menu to see if the option to install from unknow sources is still there?
This is from the B&N forum.. about the update.
I can tell you one thing that was fixed. My Nook is NOT rooted, but I have installed GoLauncher on my Nook and have the Amazon store. After the update, I can still open this home screen in the usual way and even have an app that opens up that launcher instead of Nook when pressing the "n" button. I can still open up the Amazon Market, HOWEVER, when attempting to install apps from Amazon, I now get an error message that says, "Install blocked. For security reasons, only apps purchased through the NOOK shop can be installed".... ARGHHHH. Very little in the Nook market is free, but many things in Amazon are.

The update allows previously sideloaded apps from the amazon app store to continue working, but it prevents you from sideloading additional apps.

I have yet to unwrap the nook as I bought it for christmas.. Question is can I root straight out of the box, before I get this update?..
I was so excited about the Nook purchase, now I feel that a return is needed using the extended christmas return policy for present purchasing.. I guess I will need to, if I now am unable to root..
I wasn't even going to root, I was going to be content with side-loading. Now I fear I can do neither..
The glitter is gone of my christmas present!
Well, if they plugged that hole, then mine is going back. Sorry, it's bad enough that the bootloader is locked, and I give all the credit in the world to the developers working on cracking this, but it's bull****. I've been holding off returning it because it at least does what I want it to do now.
If for some reason, I screw something up and need to do a restore, I'm not going to be **** out of luck with a nook tablet that I can't put my most used apps onto.

And don't get me wrong, as a person who works in Finance, I TOTALLY understand this move on B&N's part. It's just that now the device no longer fits my needs.
Eh, worse come to worse, people can just throw their tablets on ebay or craigslist. They won't get full price but they'll do pretty well. I see it as basically renting the tablet for the time you have it. Nice while you have it, then get as much as you can for it and move on.
2012 will be the year of the tablet and in 6 months there will more 7 inch tablets on the market than anyone will know what to do with. They won't all be great, but there will be enough good ones that we won't have to settle for a ridiculously locked down device like the nook, just to get decent battery life and expandable storage, etc.
I think Barnes and Noble are gonna find out that if you want the tablet market, you have to actually release a tablet that's comparable with everything else out there. B&N is not Apple. They actually have to work to win customers. And this sure as hell isn't the way to do it.
So if the answer is to return, can anyone recommend a tablet (not kindle) that is around 350.. Sigh, I prefered this size to a 10" but guess I can not get the best of all worlds.. Iwill live with inconvient size to rebel against control.

I agree. Bought three of these as family gifts because I could sideload easily without rooting. I rooted my NC, but have no interest in doing and managing that for 4 family NTs. We will have 4 that will go back because they, again - no longer fit with our needs.
friends,
i got my tfp from gamestop. it came bundled with shadowgun thd. there was a recent update to this game to make it better for tegra3.
issue is that i cant download the update from market! get an error that i did not purchase it!
anyone has been able to resolve this yet?
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk
I got the same thing. The one that came from Gamestop is the Tegra3 version. if nothing major wasn't added, which I didn't notice, I wouldn't sweat it. Same goes for Sonic CD. there is an update but won't let you update from market.
Another reason why pre-installed apps are bad. They are installed the same way a pirated application would be installed. You have not actually bought Shadowgun, you simply have it installed.
To get future updates you either have to 'pirate it again' or buy it from the Market.
properly preinstalled apps are able to be updated (when they're baked into the rom) but the way gamestop has just sideloaded these apps is really annoying, aside from not being able to update them, unless you backup the apk, you will lose the app if you do a system wipe.
i don't know how else they could have given them to us, as afaik android doesn't have things like redemption tokens/keys in the same manner as you get extra stuff with xbox games, but they def need a better way than what they have done.

Yes, I still have problems with Google Goggles, Google Music and other pre-installed apps on my Nexus One. These never report updates and I have to jump through hoops to update them, and these are Google Apps on a Google Device. At least these are free so its just a frustration. For your pre-installed paid apps, you normally need to get those updates from the manufacturer who updates them in their normal update. However, since Gamestop is not the manufacturer I would say you are unlikely to get any updates to your free apps unless you go out and buy them.
Yeah did I factory reset and lost all the GS games:/ looked at the Gs site they should at least made it possible for those that purchased it through GS to be able to redownload it through our account somehow.

I bet they plan on making a version of impulse for android which would be a pre install app store for this stuff. They are just not on the ball since they had to buy that product from Stardock and its been obvious they do not have developers to keep it up.
So, which version do those of us who have the GS TFP have?

Its not so much a version but a package. I would imagine you have the Tegra 3 version, but this was probably a Gamestop package that does not match the market package. This is why it does not update.
You should be able to go into your Manage Applications setting and find the version number installed. You can then compare this with the version listed in the description of the app in the market. This will tell you whether it matches or how different they are.

the reason they don't update is they were sideloaded, so the cert/key/liscence doesn't check out when the market looks for it to update.
what if i uninstall the game and install it again from the backup apk. i recall the first time i opened the game it downloaded. maybe when it downloads this time, we may get the new version of the game!
would this work?

I talked with my local district manager of GS and told him of this issue. He said he would let the regional manager know and have him pass it up to corporate GS about it. He called BS on this as well. He seemed like A cool guy. I have his number now and will call back in a week or so. And ask. If he has. Heard anything about this

no, what it downloads is the game data (textures and such) if those are updated for some reason, it will download the latest ones, but the app updates won't change since the apk is still the old version. BUT for backup purposes, a TiB of the apk works fine, i had luckily backed mine up (on the microSD card)and had to wipe my tablet, and was able to restore it just fine.

He said that it was BS that GS would release something that you don't technically own. He said we should be able to update the apps when the update does come up since we paid for the apps when we purchased the tablet. He is going to let the regional manager know this and try to get an answer for me/us about what we can do about this. Like I said he was pretty cool about everything.

Well you do own it. They just didn't use an established market (sideloading instead), didn't provide you a hardcopy or remote backup, and did not provide a way to keep it up to date. What's BS is how clueless Gamestop is about technology and specifically Android.
Although I don't have a GS version, I am very interested in what you find out. GS has been trying to get into the tablet market and how they handle this would be a good indication on how successful they will be at it.

Hello All,
My first post here - I just got my new Asus TF Prime today... Beautiful tablet
I just have a couple of q's - Is there anything I should do first up, after I open it and charge it?
I have to do the upgrade to android 4.0 and I saw the instructions in the Asus TF Prime support page. Is that the easiest / best way? I saw that there are 10 different firmware versions and they do mention instructions on how to get the correct firmware. But for some reason, I find it confusing. Can someone let me know how to chose the right firmware for upgrade? I am in Helsinki, Finland and I got the TF Prime from Helsinki, Finland.
Is it necessary for me to install a security suite on the tablet?
PS., I have seen the wonderful accessories guide here and I plan to get some soon like the stylus / cover...
Thanks and see you all around.. Cheers.
Step 1: avoid trolls/douchebags that flood this forum nowadays....
anyway once you are charged up go into the settings then about tablet and check for new firmware and upgrade to ICS. Then you need to decide if you want to root the tablet or not.
After you update to ICS, do a factory reset, for silky smooth operating...
Congrats

Congrats with your TF Prime!
You probably have the WW SKU, so I guess that is the one you should look at that one (Version V9.4.2.15(WW)
Check the SW version under "settings", but I guess yours will be World Wide Rom.
Enjoy your TF Prime, mine has been ordered today.
Cheers!!!

Verry important, and do it before you install anything, saves a lot of time.
Step 2: post thread comparing it to The new iPad
Hello people,
Thanks a lot and lol on some msgs...
I am charging it up now and I will check the SW version in a while.. but on the box, I see "Android WW"... so I assume its the android ww rom?
Also, on the keyboard dock sticker, it says "Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich" - Does this mean it has already shipped with the Android 4.0 OS? Anyway, I will check in the settings once I turn it on.
PS., how do I do the factory reset? From within the settings like in any other android 4.0 OS?
Thanks again and cheers.
PPS., I don't have no iPad and so, no comparison..
The good things:
Check out a few games, they rock on the Prime. There are a number of "THD" marked games that give the 3D performance a workout and show off the hardware and display very well. Emulators, especially with a bluetooth joystick paired to it, work great. Check out performance of video with some good movies. Check out Splashtop (comes with the tablet) and if you're inclined, check out Splashtop THD (basically Splashtop but makes higher resolutions available, and smooooooth streaming for HD files). Decide whether to root, add things like CIFS support for connecting to your home network. Put a new launcher on it, organize your shortcuts into folders, get a new wallpaper on it using wallpaper wizardrii, chat with some friends using Skype or Talk.
The preventative steps, to do while in your return period, and before you decide to unlock it...some of these issues may require RMA or a return/repurchase or selection of a different unit for some people:
-Verify it has a serial number shown in settings, and that you are able to receive OTA updates.
-Check out the overall performance of wifi, decide if it's good enough for your needs.
-Check the performance of the GPS. It likely doesn't perform very well.
-Try pairing a bluetooth headset and listening to streaming music or watching a movie over wireless, check out internet speeds with and without bluetooth.
-Check for light bleed along edges of the screen
-If you plan on using the keyboard dock, check out the various threads on cracked screens and decide if you want to take preventative steps or get an extended warranty, etc.

Agreed. Update your tablet before you install any apps and then do a factory reset. Some people noted software glitches after they upgrade their device and it is much easier to to a factory reset before you install a lot of apps.

To check for an update go to Settings > About Tablet > System Firmware Update.
Even though your tablet shipped with ICS, it might not have the latest update for this tablet.
To reset your tablet go to Settings > Backup & reset > Factory data reset.
Great ideas for new owners. Got plenty to do looking for problems before downloading any kind of applications.

Hi People,
Thanks again for the msgs and info.
I checked and it says Android 4.0.3 in settings (and yes, there is the serial number too).
I am yet to connect to wifi / bluetooth and all that. I will soon. Tablet as such looks great - no defects from the outside..
Btw, I noticed that there is no Swype option as an input method?! Is this true or am I missing something here? If there is no swype, then can I just download the Swype Beta from the official Swype website?
As for the apps., I still haven't installed anything yet.. I will in the coming days There are quiet a few essential apps I need to get in as well as get a micro sd card for 'expanded' memory.. lol (I need the micro sd card, because I'll be working with tons of PDFs and other documents).
Anyway, let me see how it goes Cheers..

Of course, yes Dropbox, evernote, Adobe reader (or is there anything better for reading PDFs?), Skype, Opera Mobile etc., are all waiting to get in..
Btw, thanks a lot for the SD Card info. Yes, I do have an SD card lying around - I will check that..
Also, in one of my prev posts., I had asked info about the necessity for a security suite - do I need one? I mean, I don't install apps from outside the google android market in any case... still, do I need a security suite?
And does anyone have any idea for Swype?
Thanks again.
You can download the Swype beta from their website. It works quite nicely on ICS now. There are a few steps required to get Swype up and running, including creating an account on their website, downloading an installer, then the installer downloads and installs the Swype app. But it's worth it, IMO.
I've never used a security suite for my Android devices. Just be judicious in which apps you install.
If you don't mind paying a few bucks for an advanced PDF reader/annotator, consider ezPDF or RepliGo.
Step 4. Determine wherever its faulty or not BEFORE your return to retailer window expires, and never, ever rma it, well obviously unless you are past return window and something fails.
Step 5. Hopefully its all clear, and you can start enjoying it.

The default Asus software keyboard is swype-like, in that you can slide from one letter to the next. Kind of swype-lite.
If you decide to root and unlock, Read this, very important:

Best thing to do is just stay away from this forum and enjoy your tablet.
Hello again,
Thanks for the msgs (and yes, I'm enjoying this tablet)
Btw, I checked the firmware version: On the TF Prime it says, "IML74K.WW_epad-9.4.2.15-20120221"
and on the Asus website, in the support section for TF Prime, I see "Version V9.4.2.15(WW)" - Is this the one I should be looking at?
Also, As you can see, the version is the same but the dates are different: The one on the Asus website has "2012.02.29 update" where as the system has "20120221"... So should I just leave it as it is or should I update to the new firmware?
I got Swype beta downloaded / installed and its working fine. BT and Wifi are working great as well...
PS., I noticed that, for some reason, when connected to my PC (at work, Win 7 x64, home premium) through USB, it doesn't charge (it charges when I connected to my laptop, Win 7 x86, Ultimate)... Why so?
PPS., Another issue (and yes, I did search and read some threads on a similar issue - notifications do not clear out even after downloading / installing an app!! Is there any way to clear it? For instance, on my SGS2 phone, there is this 'clear' option... but I don't see any such option with the TF Prime. Is there any way to clear those notifications?
Cheers..
When I initially got and registered my Prime, I was referred to a web page where I could remotely manage and track my tablet. I tried it and really liked the options.
But whatever I do today, I cannot recall where this page is. Probably some dead Asus servers (most of the pages return HTTP error 500 today) help to that as well.
Do anyone has a record about this web page?
i never heard of an official Asus way of doing what you said. I'm interested in seeing this page you speak of. i know there are 3rd party apps that can do this but never heard of an Asus solution.

Are you talking about the "find my phone" type apps, or an app where you can see and control the Prime from your PC...
If it's the latter, I used to use www.mymobiler.com on my Win6.5 Phone. They now have an Android version, but you need to be rooted, and unfortunately, I'm not....so I can't really say anything about the Android version.
It's been mentioned a few times around here:

If it's the latter, I used to use www.mymobiler.com on my Win6.5 Phone. They now have an Android version, but you need to be rooted, and unfortunately, I'm not....so I can't really say anything about the Android version.

For some reason I couldn't get it to work

@Namiardo,
That is what I was talking about, devicetracker dot asus dot com. Thanks for reminding me!
I almost forgot about this. I signed up for it a while ago but thankfully haven't actually needed to use it.
Just tested it out and everything appears to still be working. Took a little while for it to locate me, but it eventually nailed down my location.
You may find some information on centrastage.com
They are occupied with remote management software and might give you an advice or something

Thanks for the heads up. Didn't know about this.
Hi Ive been trying to root my Nabi 2 tablet to access the Google Play Store. Ive downloaded ADB and followed instructions, Ive also got the correct drivers etc, when i ran the root tool by jmz I chose option 1 and it ran through the process, is there anything else I need to during during this as I then booted up and it was just the same as before?! Im normally an apple fan and experienced in jailbreaking etc but this is my first android as Im trying to exchange all my apple devices for android lol. Can some help me find a step by step full tutorial as Ive been trying to follow the one in this link here http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1905674 but I cant understand what else I need to do?! Thanks in advance
Anybody?! JMZTAYLOR if you see this can you please write a quick tutorial on what I need to do as Im clearly doing something wrong. Its probably just something so simple Im missing?! Any advice would be highly appreciated, sorry if this post is extremely noobish Im normally very adaptable!
Any Luck?
I was just wondering, it's been over a month with no post here. Did you get it working? If so can you post your solution or a link to the thread with the solution you used?
Not sure about the root tool for your device, but any good root tool will install a superuser app, such as Superuser:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.noshufou.android.su
Not sure if you got your issues sorted yet but if you go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1905674 I am sure someone could help you. I just rooted 2 in about 20 minutes over the weekend. Good luck
There's no need to root the nabi for the play store...

Interesting, except for step 21:
21. Do not update or attempt to install any apps, as it will force close the Google Play Store. The apk file installed is not fully functional on the nabi 2 Tablet. It does however allow for the purchase of Books, Movies and Music. The following pop-up will appear if you attempt to update or purchase an app.
If you root you will have a fully functional Play Story as well as text AND video on Google Talk plus many other features

My son is getting this for christmas. I know really all he cares about are the google play apps and youtube and other features that need this process in order for him to achieve his wishes... (whew)
anyway....
Any warnings that i should heed other than a voided warranty?
Has anyone heard of anybody bricking a nabi 2?
that would not be cool...
Thanks for any help

I want to get Google Play working on my son's Nabi 2 as well, but I'm pretty concerned over the touch calibration issue some people are having on the ROM thread about rooting it. I've only had one android device (my galaxy s2) and thought about rooting it, but couldn't find an overly compelling reason to do so. Now that the Nabi 2 needs it, I would be loathe to brick it/mess it up to get this calibration issue. Even if I try on my s2, this Nabi seems a tad different for some reason.

That is a very rare issue. If you root it and have a problem with the touch screen it only effects recovery software once it's rooted and gapps installed you won't have to go back to recovery.

It is indeed a rare issue, if the script goes fine, you shouldn't have to do anything in recovery yourself anyway. Here is the gapps.zip that fixes the 'android upgrading' on every boot.

If you want a more manual approach, check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2016463
It's written for Ubuntu, but the commands are easy to adapt for Windows as well. You install adb and fastboot differently and you remove 'sudo' from the commands.
Does rooting the Nabi2 get rid of the Monarch UI? All I want to do is get GApps on it, but I want to keep the Monarch UI for the kids.

Do you really need Google Play?
Nabi 2 works great with Amazon App store (over 50,000 apps). Ex. Unless I installed Minecraft PE, my son would have 2 tablets for Christmas, his with no minecraft and mine with. In daddy mode you can get amazon and the installed apps are manageable in the add/remove to decide which apps to allow your child to see. PS: DO NOT add Amazon store to Nabi mode (unless your child is older, or unless your rich and don't mind your child maxing out a credit card on apps). Personally, I have jailbroken ipads for friends and rooted my last Motorola phone, but I wouldn't risk and consequences of screwing up your child's brand new tablet. You can go from Hero to Zero if you mess up.

Personally I would go ahead and root/gapps so you can have Google Play, use AdAway, etc etc.
Just be prepared to lose a bit more battery life when you install the Amazon app store. I have heard about it taking up a bit more battery due to licence checks, running in the background and such.

For some reason I can't download anything from the play store all of a sudden. It worked fine the other day, but today it gives me an error when ever I try to download a new app or update an installed app.
Sent from my fast as hell phone.
Does anyone know if there is a fix for the WiFi problem?
Also - stupid question - is it technically feasible to install the Play store without rooting?
