For any Developer who needs the official Viewpad 7 Kernel Source

Hopefully we can get a dev to make so we can use updated flash and get to the point of something akin to gingerbread etc for this interesting little VPad7.
Anyone close to it or is it a dead cause?
I'm adding this here as I can't get access to the main dev forum - the ITE source should be licenced under the GPL. If Viewsonic are refusing to release it, violating the GPL licence, but have released earlier source, I can only see 2 reasons:
- The ITE source contains proprietry information, it is was never intended to be linked to GPL licenced code. By releasing the code Viewsonic would be in hot legal water.
- Viewsonic haven't understood previous requests: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1360160&page=2
Either way if devs still want the ITE driver kernel source I propose we let legal team at the FSF know of this issue and let them deal with it, unless the situation has changed (that I've not read about*)? That should put a rocket up Viewsonic's behind to get the issue sorted. The FSF shouldn't have a problem issuing notice on core kernel violations as I would imagine they deal with these sort of claims regularly.
* Also checking source now (I'm not a kernel dev so I don't know exactly what I'm looking for).

tried all the roms published but i have the same problem because there is no ite-support
i would love to try an oc-kernel!
searching all around i have found a simiular device with ite-source code published
also a 7inch display and same cpu.
if anyone is interested and able to build a kernel i will tell him where to find the source
code.

@MattAtDell tweeted the other day in reply to some other random user that he would look into it, so its a good outlook that the kernel source will be made available... This will probably be the first phone I'd be willing to try and build a kernel for, lol. I'm sure we'd have a vanilla build of Android 2.1 (probably a bit broken) already IF we had the kernel source, 1.6 and 2.1 run the same kernel version 2.6.29 (froyo is 2.6.32 so it might actually take a bit more effort). This also explains why they show a 2.1 build even though they've committed to go straight to 2.2.

You can already build a vanilla froyo including kernel, but its taking a lot of experimenting to get a working combination of settings (I'm using the codearoura (qualcomm) surf ) git..
I may try a generic android git to see if it works..

Any success compiling a kernel 2.6.33+ for Streak?
Any success compiling a kernel for Dell Streak? Where to start for it? I've been trying cyanogen kernels, but they don't seem to work or maybe I am doing something wrong creating the boot.img file. Any doc for it?

I was wondering whether the android kernel uses some kind of standardized kernel versions and configurations that allow people to add a module to an existing kernel in, let's say a dell streak tablet/smartphone.
Is it easy to get the kernel configuration and patches to compile modules for the streak?
Do they put some kind of locking so that nobody having a jtag tool can make the configuration changes to make the kernel read a new module?

ive had lots of success in building kernels, its just that none of them boot!
(technically I think this is known as not succeeding )
Building != Booting
So we have same situation... It's not a matter of building a kernel but booting it right on the device.
But what would be failing? Has anybody seen any log about what is happenning during boot to know what is failing? Because I would understand that a valid kernel would boot the device but some parts that would need propietary code wouldn't work (for example wifi, or whatever)... but no boot at all is quite strange.
Can anyone confirm at least a successful module compiling/running?

Not me! Is it really impossible the get it running?
If you ask dell for the linux source code, they must provide it. They have to make the exact source code available that can be used to compile the shipped binaries.
If they won't make it available upon request go inquire with http://gpl-violations.org as recommended earlier.
hey dcordes glad to see you here, I have asked via a few avenues, but was waiting till its available in the USA before pressing them further
theres a Guy popped up on modaco yesterday that thinks the boot.img needs 2k page file but 4k padding and suggested some changes to makeimg to get it to boot properly.

If you are as pissed as everybody about the lack of the sources, go write a mail to https://lists.gpl-violations.org/mailman/listinfo/legal
They are the attorney to each user of GPL licensed software ! They will tell you what to do. If you browse the archives they will advise to keep asking for sources. We did that. No it's time to collect evidence of the ignored requests and take further steps.
But first we should let that mailing list know ! If nobody will mail it in the next few days I will. I don't have the device but I hate industry going ignorant on customers. It is also an insult to everybody working on the Linux kernel source code. And that's many and includes myself.

Found post about VegaComb being released for Adam on TabletRoms.com. Due to the similarities and the fact that there exists ROMs for G-Tab based on Adam. Do we know if there is an effort to port this ROM to G-Tab? Any info would be appreciated as this looks to be THE ROM, with the possibility of fixing camera and hardware acceleration.
A kernel is being worked on ; on the slatedroid forum. The hardware is different so a kernel has to be made for it to work

Unfortunately the Vega is not a hardware match for our beloved g-tab, they are very similar however they are not the same hardware exactly, little things like the wireless controller and the camera are different. They also have a different mainboard in their system. I'm pretty sure that the rom that works on theirs is not going to work on ours until we have a working kernel to work from. They have worked very hard on rewriting the drivers to get their tablet to work as well as it is in 3.2 and they don't seem to be slowing down now that it is working. I know that the group that is working on the kernel is working very hard to get it running as quickly as we can, I don't think that most of us have much experience in kernel coding and so it is taking some time to even get it to boot. However I can tell you that we are working diligently to get through the problems and get a kernel out to the community so that we can join the ranks of the Vega in making Google cry by hacking our way to victory. On a side note I want to say how impressed I am by the level of assistance that everyone in this community has for the new members and old members alike. I don't know of another rom that has this level of support from it's users out there. Thanks to all of you that are helping people overcome their issues and enjoy this fantastic rom.

The GTab Kernel Dev Team would like to chronicle our kernel development process for everyone to enjoy. The Gtablet 2.6.36 kernel project is based on the work done by Eduardo/RaYmAn on the Adam kernel. The biggest thanks goes out to them and anyone else who works on that project because it has made our work possible.

We know that we are hanging on init.rc and have a few ideas one how to proceed. Mayday_Jay (Give him and Icewyng a big thank you because they have made this project viable) is working on getting all the developers a proper update.zip that will help those with out a usb to serial converter get some useful debug information.
Don't fret when it takes a couple days for us to update. If you want bleeding edge news, join us on the kernel dev irc channel which is found further on in the thread. We are still working! =)

Linux (BT5) will boot without Touchscreen working. Work is progressing slowly to get this working with Android. Mayday_Jay, with the use of USB -> serial converter has been able to get some useful dmesg output as well as some other debug information that is giving us new ideas on how to proceed.

Starting to modify the adam files to mach the correct values for our device. Our current config gets us passed the birds and to the second boot image and the usb device registers. Trying to get it connected to adb to get some dmesg output.

The resulting kernel did not boot and this is more than likely due to the fact that there are quite a few new config options that need to be set. I have run a diff to find differences between Pershoot's and Rayman's kernel and will be trying a new config either tonight or tomorrow hopefully. Gotta sift through new and deprecated options as well as any they both have but are set differently (and why)
Part 2
The kernel compiled with the additions from rayman's config in pershoots got it past the birds to the "Android 3.0" screen. Tomorrow I will be able to hookup adb and see where it is crashing from there.

Still running through different configurations. Need to ask pershoot what modifications he made to make the .32 kernel boot on the 1.2 bootloader. IE Which files use the NEWBL config option and what the changes are.

I answered this in the CM9 thread, but in case anybody looks here and misses that, they are implementing a new feature to build kernels as part of the CM9 build process, at present the SGS2 git changes that would be required for this are in the CM9 gerrit review and have yet to be approved, this will not affect your build in the slightest and once the files are approved this message will disappear. If you want to cherry pick it before it gets approved, you can but doing so may have unintended consequences (thus the need for review).
I have a cheap Polaroid tablet P902/A900 made by Southern Telecom with a rockchip processor.
I want to compile a custom recovery for it but the kernel source is not available on their website and they are ignoring my requests via email and their support forms.
Is there anything that I can do to get it?
I thought that due to the GPL, the kernel source had to be available for all android devices.
Is that not the case?

It makes the GPL seem a bit impotent if manufacturers can flaunt the license terms as they please.

not all oem will release their source code in fact,some well known device manufacturer will release their source code and some unknown device or unpopular device (sorry but no sorry) will not because it is costly and not free,it depends on many factor, so the source code you requested from the manufacturer may or may not got released through their website.
Hi all,
Now that CM is dead (RIP) and official Lineage OS for the Wileyfox Swift 2 has not yet happened, i've been looking into other alternative OS's that are compatible with the Wileyfox Swift 2 [marmite].
However i'm not seeing any that are compatible for this device (Resurrection Remix, Dirty Unicorn, LineageOS (yet) and wondered if anyone has had any experience with any other custom OS's that they know are compatible?

There are none because there is no source code for this device. You must be patient and wait until Wileyfox releases (Before the end of this month?!) the promised Android 7.1 update, and hope they also release the source code with it.
I did several modifications to stock CyanogenOS 13.1 version for myself, but I found not worth it sharing that, since we're going to receive the new update really really soon. If the update is a disaster, or they do a OnePlus (release the update on the 31st, late in the night before the end of the month, and full of bugs), I'll consider sharing it. But until then, just wait for it.

Thats not true there is maybe not a source code but the chips inside the device (and drivers) are also used in other devices wich are so you can make roms for this device.
There are no roms because this phone isn't used by many peaple yet or the community isnt big at the moment for this device but we can port roms from the xiaomi redmi 3s for instance

WTF? Do you think that by having same CPU means we should have the very same source code? I know there's source code for the SD430 in codeaurora, and that Xiaomi released sources for land, but that doesn't mean anything. It'd require a lot of dirty and unnecessary stuff to get it working here (it's not only about the CPU, right?), and since Wileyfox is REQUIRED to release the source code (all OEMs are) we can avoid it by just waiting patiently. From there, building Lineage will be easier, but hey, if anyone wants to do the hard job, use land-m source code and try to port it, is free to do so! :laugh:

Manufacturers need to release kernel source as it's under a GPL license, but Android itself is under the Apache License 2.0 and manufacturers are not required to release any source code. In fact the vast majority of manufacturers do not release any of their internal Android code.
And having kernel source does not magically allow you to make custom ROMs. In fact you shouldn't even need the manufacturers kernel source unless they are using some obscure hardware.

I know, but it's better having and working with it, isn't it? I know we will need to bring up a device tree, and that it's not that easy, but starting out of a good base is better than mixing sources from other phones, at least that's my opinion.

Because I do not think that the public (where most users are not geeks, probably) will be interested in the post that the developers have released the source code of the kernel. Or someone beforehand, before closing Cyanogen Inc, released the source code for the kernel. And support is usually not answered to such questions, because they do not have such information.
But in any case you need the information you need to find in all available ways.
