It kinda makes me wonder about when ICS will drop. Seems pretty random to send an email asking you to check for updates. Makes me hopeful...but still doubtful as to when.
Are you running 2.3.3? Maybe that's why they sent you that
Edit: obviously you're not lol

Typically, their monthly emails are "discover more things to do with your phone" type of deal. This is the first one mentioning updates. Kind of got me excited for 5 seconds, and disappointed for much longer.

Right, that's kind of how I took it. I usually get these emails for 3 different devices. My 3d, daughters OG and my wife's BB. The only time I recall seeing one stating to check for system update, was when one was available, for my wife's BB. Just got me hopeful was all.
Edit-one other thing just came to mind. I have the feeling it may be important to run ICS with some of the newer firmware updates from 2.17. So perhaps this is another way to prep people (general public) to update, prior to Sprint pushing out ICS in a few months?

the mid jan update included the new adreno drivers, while others(att verizon etc)waited for ics to update thier phones drivers.(im sure its because they knew our ics update would be late) anyways im sure this email is to remind people to update to get the mid jan update, i bet they get alot of complaints about the evo 3d under performing and the last update made this phone scream compared to before

I'd like to think that too, but I seriously doubt it. Why would Sprint want to release an update to ICS for last year's phone right before they release this year's phones? It doesn't make business sense. When they release next year's phones, sprint stores will get a lot more traffic in and out of them, and the 3D can't be catching people's eyes still because it's on the cutting edge, it has to appear outdated, at least while sprint is dealing with the new phone rush.
When I bought my 3D, the epic 4g touch was out for about a month or two. The employee who "helped" me pick out a phone was straight up lying to me (maybe she really just had no clue, but then why was she employed at a sprint store?). I was told that the 3D was a slow, outdated, single core phone, 1 ghz processor, and she overexaggerated the epic touch's specs as well. Glad I did my research because she was worthless.
I'm not gonna jump on the nexus and one bandwagon quite yet, this phone is plenty powerful for me right now.

While this is bad news for us, how many people are actually going to be able to sit back and not run to the store to purchase this phone the day it is released.
If enough people had the will power to stay away maybe it would send a message to HTC, but I don't think we have that kind of will power. To add to that, I believe the EVO and now the EVO 3d sell extrememly well to people who have no idea what rooting even means and just enjoy the phone for what it is.
I still think we are in the minority when it comes to these things.....So the sales numbers will let HTC know if this has any effect on it but I say the EVO 3d still sells strong.

Meh, I've noticed recently that stock seems to perform better than most/all custom ROMs anyway. Perhaps this way I'll spend less time messing around with my phone... As long as I can get partial root to remove bloatware I'll be fine and I'm confident this wont be an issue.
On another note, I think this statement is BS: "It seems HTC has finally caved to what are likely the security demands of wireless carriers with its newest phones, and is locking down its handsets Moto-style..."
It has yet to be confirmed that bootloaders are being locked at the request of carriers. The argument against tethering is invalid because full root is not required to run root access wireless tethering apps. I think this is solely the decision of manufacturers- why they are making this decision, I don't know...

I am still getting this device day one. If I decide I can't live without full root then I'll return it and wait for something else. Can't lose with Sprint's 30 day satisfaction guarantee.

I agree 100%, but this doesn't change the fact that htc is telling an entire committed of supportive (and vocal) customers to go stick it unnecessarily. While they don't care if they lose my business, I am disappointed in them and will likely end up going with another manufacturer.

If its anything like the droids - you'll eventual have root if theres a exploit but full custom kernels are thrown out the window, so are full custom roms. All you'll have is minor superficial modifications to the official ROM. That means that you'll only taste a new version of Android if HTC/Sprint officially releases it for the 3D. That also means no CM, no MIUI, no ported ROMs.

Sprint will begin to rollout Google's latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, to our customers in early 2012. Ice Cream Sandwich will be available via an over-the-air update to a variety of devices including HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Design 4G and other key products in our line-up. While I'd like to have it then, I highly doubt they will have it out that quickly to us evo3d owners. Took them almost 6mo to push out GB to the evo4g given you prolly could add a month or so of delay associated with the evo3d release then bc it'd be dumb to update the evo4g then release the 3D shortly after...
Just find it odd they say early next yr which would Indicate before April in my book, really b4 march ends. Now begs the question how they couldn't get GB out on evo4g by March this yr either....

Seems like I had a fully working Sense based GB rom on my Evo 2 months before it officially released. April maybe?
I'm looking forward to the leaks .vs the official build which will be 1/2 way old by the time it really launches.
What will suck is being stuck on the leaked stock ICS/Sense kernel for what will feel like forever.
at least we know were getting it. you wan't htc/sprint to "get off their asses"? how bout you go out and make a near perfectly working product for the masses and figure out how to deliver it effectively then. hmmm?
Well, we can always hope!
It seems that in the past we never really new when until it said "you have an update" on your phone. A lot of rumors and a lot of speculation.
I am hoping that article is correct. I am envisioning a December 19th or 26th update. Merry Xmas from us to you kind of thing.
I think that our chances of getting a update soon are strong. With the last major Android that Sprint released being in September(Epic Touch on Sept. 16th). Other carriers are releasing some big phones. Verizon has Nexus Galaxy and Razor(Mid November), At&T with the Vivid and Skyrocket(Nov 6th), and T-mobile with the Amaze.
Some of these phones might not be "better" but they are all newer.
Evo is Sprint's flagship phone. These are all just my opinions. But, we will know for sure pretty soon. Sprint is going to have to do something for the xmas shoppers. We will see what that is.
I have a reliable inside source at the campus....

These two tie in together. HTC wants to nail down an update schedule that the One S will have ICS for a while, gathering in sales, while the other phones will have to wait. Also, T-Mobile stores list our phone as 1.5 ghz dual-core, they don't really specify that it's produced by Snapdragon or that it is an S3. Clearly, it would look bad that the One S and the Amaze have the same specs in a simpler manner, without going into specifics.
Some of you folks act like your phone is broke or completely ancient because it isn't rocking the current OS.
There is a leak for ICS, so what is the problem? If you want it so bad, download it and be on your merrily happy way. If not, go spend monies you probably don't have on a device that runs on it. Complaining over and over on something you can't control is beyond rhetorical.
Not like T-Mobile has ever been fast with the updates. This is nothing new......be glad if it comes out in June.

My Amaze (bought in December) has multiple issues that have not been resolved on three separate handsets, and half a dozen factory resets. I'm not "whining" about not getting ICS sooner, I'm whining about not getting FIXES after way too long a wait.
The last word I've heard was, "we're working on a fix," "HTC is aware of the problem," while I continue to wait, and wait, and wait. Like the poor refugees in CASABLANCA
I'm willing to wait longer for solid fixes, and (crosses fingers) a replacement of Sense 3.0 with the much-improved 4.0. Frankly, I've gotten tired of factory resets and handset replacements that flush my progress and scores from games that I've paid for. It's not a requirement that my games are intact on a phone, but jeez, it got old after 12 weeks of ownership of this top-tier phone to be told, "don't install any apps, just use the phone as shipped."
I just feel that I've been made to wait through serial postponements while HTC and T-Mobile trumpet a newer, slightly better line of phones. Clearly, people who've already bought an HTC don't get as much respect or thought than the new customers out there. S'okay, if the ICS update arrives and doesn't fix the problems, I'll know what to do. Root, flash, or flip and get another brand. T'is a pity that modern manufacturers would rather disappoint their established customers while trying to attract new customers. It's a model that has destroyed many companies in the past.

And with the size of this screen, the super amoled display, and speed, and boy do I mean speed of.this device, I will never, ever, buy another HTC device again! Just my two cents lol!

Sprint is the issue. They are the final step before ICS is released. Follow the order: Google releases Android to the manufacturer > HTC tweaks it an adds Sense > HTC sends to carrier. HTC is not necessarily the blame here. There is a few threads dedicated to the speculation of the ICS release. IMO, it's still coming, but, just from the timing of things, they most likely delayed it so as not to conflict with the release of their new flagship, EVO 4G LTE (pushing more people to upgrade to that).
With the amount of reading and diving in to other forums because people ask me about their phones or I have actually rooted their phones, I prefer HTC phones regardless of the Evo 3D's lack of official ICS ROM (even though there is a VM leak and three ports available for it, one of those ports is a fully functional HTC Sense 3.5, which is what I am running) and the HBOOT 1.5 [email protected] (even though it's also mentioned that having HBOOT 1.5, rooted, S-ON and recovery 4EXT is the way to go).
I prefer the Sense interface. It's my preference. I love the ease of rooting (in most circumstances). I've had my experience of rooting a Samsung Captivate. It was eh. It was easy to root, but, when it came to custom stuff, just eh.

How's the GPS on the gsII? I've never seen any Samsung with decent GPS or signal.

GPS works fine. My wife prefers Samsungs and has the GSII. We've used her GPS several times around Savannah, GA and locally where we live and around Atlanta with no issue. Actually performed better than my Evo 3D at times.
It's more about what you like. I've had the hero, og evo, and now 3d. I still have a epic 4g I got for Christmas and my experience wasn't all that great with it until cm came along. I despise touchwiz although its getting better. Sense does make HTC phones run a little slower cause its a resource hog, but I just love sense. I suggest looking at both and deciding on what you are more comfortable with. Both the s3 and evo lte are great

HTC or Samsung GIII
I'd have to, IMO, that the HTC is worth staying with HTC. I too thought about switching over to the SGIII but in the end, I'm going to stick it out with HTC, as the EVO 3D was my first HTC device and I will say I'm a little disappointed with their support of the device. I'll give them another chance with the EVO 4G LTE and see what happens. After all, I plan on being a smart phone user for way more than the standard 2 yr contract and will switch devices in the future if need be.
HTC has great devices and I can't stand hearing "3d will not get ics"
It's been confirmed. There are processes that have to be done before it will be out. I have seen new phones coming out with ics yes, but how many older devices have gotten officially updated yet. My buddy with T-Mobile who still hasn't seen his update. People just don't have any patience. If your on xda u have the ability to run ics. Either do it or wait.

Um t-mobile gsII just got ics last night and where and when did Sprint Ever say the 3d was getting ics? I've been scouring the Web for months waiting for word and have never seen or heard Sprint officially say this. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah buy HTC ur right. But that's probably gsm. Can anyone produce solid evidence by Sprint though? Other than the video of a guy saying June timeframe which honestly just could have been that dudes long lost cousin lol.

Rumor has it that it might come to Sprint, and if it does, it might get the Evo name
HTC M7

Looks like it won't be an EVO but it will come to Sprint and it will be called HTC One. HTC released news of it today.

Yep. Supposed to be on all carriers and will be htc's first all carrier launch. This will most likely be my next phone.

Guessing No, it'll be similar yes but expect more minor boosts (ie. Kickstand, SD Card Slot, battery etc.) The Next EVO should be on track to pick up the 3D owners who actually waited 22 months.

I was looking forward to a 5 inch screen for the next HTC flagship to Sprint, but I'll settle for 4.7 with 1080p display at 468ppi. And the rest of the specs, I'll take it.
Not much to be hyped about compared to the DNA....camera...and screen are really all that's a upgrade to it... Show me next gen Qualcomm SoC in a Sprint device and then ill get excited!
Really worried they will toss APQ chip in with MSM/MDM for radios which will be old by time of an EVO launch....

Oh and that article stunk btw.... Guy is lost all over the place. If they throw those specs it'll get stomped by the S4 imho as that should be using sammys new chip by then I bet....
The guy flat out says 32Gb is enough for any phone.... Fool
I still don't see VZ jumping on board this soon after the DNA release either...
Dunno my biggest thing is to NOT see the APQ SoC in a device as that's been done and there won't be any firsts there.... Regardless I don't see sprint disbanding the EVO brand for this still...they need their device to set apart...but who knows...

Other thing sprint has done releases at CTIA after HTC did their shindig at MWC....FWIW....
Ugh I'm gonna be alone but if this is it, then ill need a lot that's not mentioned to come up and surprise me to get me to make a plunge on that device...
Won't see 800mhz lte support that early either...though that might not come till later in yr anyway.

If I hadn't already gotten the EVO in August I'd be all over that phone. My wife's upgrade is in Jan, she's likely getting the EVO as I doubt I can convince her to wait longer for this phone. Specs are beast. I guess I may be one of the few that thinks that phone is going to be awesome, I don't see why there isn't more hype....

If I can expect to get an update to an Android 4.2 / Sense 5 update for my phone, I'll keep it for an additional year and get something after that. HTC still has a lot of work to do, but I would really like to see continued upgrades for our handset.

I hear ya, but this will be on Sprint .. the DNA isn't, also this will have a bigger battery and with the smaller screen it'll smoke the DNA's battery life. So, better battery, screen, and camera? That's nice. Big improvement over the EVO that's for sure, and I bet there's other improvements over the DNA that will come out.

My wife keeps wanting me to buy a new phone for her, but she doesn't like the ones with the big screens. She'll only do HTC, and we have to stay with Sprint. So, she may have to deal with it.
If the next nexus phone comes to sprint then that will probably be my next and first choice. The fact that you can't take the battery out the evo 4g lte really really turns me away. I plan to give my evo 4g lte to my dad but something tells me I'm going to have to do some replacing of the battery because of how fast these batteries lose their charge after a while. That's gonna be a pain despite the how to videos. My second choice will be the S4 unless HTC gets there stuff together. Don't get me wrong, I like sprints variant of the one X but samsung is making their devices way more attractive lately. Always been a HTC fan but they haven't been coming through lately. Here's to hoping they listen to us.

You know sense 5 will happen on this device. Thinking this phone is gonna make the long haul. Sprint and HTC really needs to focus on a 1.5 year update policy for every device. Or maybe make it a two system update. Get 4.1-4.2, then 4.3 or next update. Or sense 4 and sense 5. Now that we arent upgrading our phones as often as we were 3 years ago, its either gonna be update to future proof the consumer investment or people will be jumping ship.

No mention of sd card there, no bueno. Plus with 1080p I'd hope there's a gpu upgrade in there as well, that's a lot of pixels that need updated.
