My Note suddenly popped up a notification and showed the usb icon on the notification bar, after running an update on Adaway. The phone was not plugged into a usb cable, but it displayed as if it were connected in MTP mode..
I recently installed Adaway to replace Adfree. I had no way to remove/disable it, until I uninstalled Adaway, the notification icon went away.
Kernel method root, is the only "mod" on an otherwise stock SGH-I717.

I run linux on my computer so I don't/can't have Kies running. What exactly does Kies control on the handset side? Is it possible to kill Kies on the handset or some other way to stop that MTP Application "Press the home key to quit Samsung Kies" from popping up every time I stick my phone in the cradle?
If you don't have any use for Kies, you can safely enable USB debugging found in: Settings -> Applictions --> Development --> USB debugging, which will stop Kies automatically popping up on the handset.
If you want rid of it after that, it's perfectly safe to freeze/uninstall the kies related APKs.

Brilliant. Sorry, that has likely been asked a million times. I think I'll keep the APKs installed, I do have kies running in a VM for the occasional backup, but no need to see that stupid screen every time I charge when it doesn't do anything unless I specifically want it to. Cheers!
Less brilliant than previously thought. That stops the MTP screen from coming up but also breaks push gmail for some odd reason.
[edit]
I access gmail through the exchange server method so it pushes messages. When I enabled USB debugging, messages stopped getting pushed. disabling the debugging fixed the problem. I find it very odd that the two would be related, especially while not plugged in, but that does seem to be the issue.

Is there a way to get the phone to be recognized by the PC for drag'n drop functionality without using the on/off USB mass storage feature in the settings? I had this going for me when I intially bought the GNote where all I did was plug in the phone via USB and the PC saw it as a media device of some sort (I want to say it showed up as a camera or mp3 player). The phone also displayed "MFT" or something (not 100% sure) at the top left corner in the notification bar. After rooting and freezing some things, I have since lost this ability and now have to go into the settings and toggle the USB mass storage feature.
I rarely use USB drag and drop. I mostly use Airdroid. http://bit.ly/umae1H
I'm not able to do wifi or bluetooth with this particular laptop.
Problem solved
Un-freezing "MTP application 1.0" solved the problem

Ha! The laptop is actually decent, its just my company's and it is locked down pretty tight... Hence the reason why I don't need it showing up as a mass storage device when I plug it in

I'm still able to do it after rooting. I used the mass storage once and by default it disables the USB debug option. Go into Settings-Location and Security and uncheck Disable USB debugging mode. That should bring it back.

All of a sudden, twice in the last two days, my Note will sound and show the USB connected (MTP connected). It shows in in the notification bar and in the notification pull down. I can't clear it in the notification pull down. I plugged it in to the computer and it charges, but the computer does not recognize it (I am sure this is because the Note thinks it is plugged in already).
I can turn off my Note and it resets the USB issue.
An ideas on what is up and/or should I be worried?
Thanks
Hi guys. So a few days ago, my phone stopped connecting to my pc. It will beep on the computer and say it's unrecognized, and the phone itself does nothing. No usb connected, no battery charging. It does actually charge, just doesn't show it in lockscreen or the desktop icon. When I go into the battery under settings, it does say charging.
I have:
1. Used 5 different cables.
2. 3 different computers
3. Resintalled drivers.
4. This started out of nowhere on MIUI (2.3)(just had the phone connected a couple of days prior with no problems). Flashed ICS EX rom, ICS CM9 and ICS Slim...same thing on all...
5. Tried mount USB storage under CWM
The phone does not respond.
Any Ideas?
This may be a long shot, as you've done all the normal trouble-shooting I would have done. However, you didn't mention if the phone was set into USB Debugging or not? I know when I've had my phone set into that mode before my PC wouldn't properly recognize or transfer files back and forth.
If you didn't know, it's under the 'settings' menu and look for something related to Developer options. Enable it if it's disabled, or disable it if it's enabled. My phone has acted wonky a couple times with transferring files and I've had to play with that setting on more than 1 occasion. Hopefully that helps.

If you use the regular charger, does it work (for charging)?
If so, you might have the usb port in your phone broken, just for the data transfer...
Running 5.1.1, I've tried installing the latest drivers from verizon & LG along with Windows10-KB3010081-x64.msu on two Windows 10 machines, and just the drivers on one Windows 7 machine.
When connecting the phone it displays it's charging. If I tape where it says "Battery full, safe to unplug charger" it closes the app drawer.
I've switched between MTP and PTP in storage settings-nothing happens.
I've turned on USB debug in developer options, still no go-the device does not show up in device manager at all.
I've tried the micro USB cable that came with my phone, along with a high speed insignia cable, and two cables that came with kindle fire tablets of various generations.
I've tried using the LG Suite-nothing happens, doesn't discover the device which I was expecting since it doesn't appear in device manager at all.
I've also factory reset the phone, it's never been rooted or had a ROM flashed, completely stock.
Anyone have any idea what I can do from here?
