[Q] Access nook internal SD card from PC? - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

I am running CM7 Alpha Final on my nook, and before I installed it I repartitioned my internal memory on my nook using the method you can find on here (the command line one). Before I put CM7 on my nook, when I plugged in the USB cable it used to load the SD card, and the nook internal memory as two separate drives on the PC.
Now it only loads the SD Card, it doesn't even see the internal drive as being present. How can I get that to become visible again?

You could try searching this forum.

See, I did that already. I found the thread where the CM7 guys were trying to figure it out and apparently did add a fix (that I either don't have in alpha final or I'm doing improperly) and a link to a nook color app that I'm not sure works on my tablet.
Also a bunch of code in that thread I'm not entirely sure I want to try messing with just yet. So...
Any chance of help here?

I believe you need to edit your build.prop. Change the following lines to look like this:
ro.additionalmounts=/mnt/media
ro.vold.switchablepair=/mnt/sdcard,/mnt/media
Reboot and both partitions should be mounted. Credit to succulent for finding this out.

mounting internal sd
Hi
I am new to all this is so can you please be more specific about how to do this or is there a fix written for it.
Or has the final zip been repaired and updated.
Hope you or someone else can help with this, seems a shame for so much good work to be spoiled by this glitch.

You need to make these changes manually in a file called build.prop located in /system.

I made this change and I still only see my 8GB card labeled "removable drive" and 1GB labeled "My Nook when connected to my PC with USB storage turned on.
How do I access the remaining free memory in my 16 GB NT?

Yours is working just fine.
Right now, you only have access to the 1GB internal. You need to repartition your internal memory if you want to see the rest.

Cubanluke - you are always a good source for support - can you point me to a good link that explains how to repartition the internal memory?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1531120
It seems like a lot but its quite easy to follow if you read it and follow the steps exactly.

yes i am

Me too - CM7 on a 16Gb NT

don't know if this has got anything to do with it but when i flash rom and go to wipe data/factory reset it formats /data, /cache, /sd-ext, but E:format_volume: make extf4fs failed on /dev/block/mmcb1k1p2 don't know if this is error or normal
also if i go to storage settings it shows sd card and show internal storage total space as 11.87gb not showing rest of internal space by which i mean the 1gb or so i should have for my data

SD card won't mount

Hey guys, about a month ago i accidentally dropped my phone on my coffee table and it cracked my screen. I didn't notice any other damage. Now it won't read the SD card. It will try and mount it and then tell me I removed it or something. I'm running Cyanogen 2.3.3. Stable rom and I have a recent nandroid backup.
I would like to fix this without a restore, but I can restore if that'll fix it. I'm just hoping it's not a hardware problem.
As always, any and all (attempts to) help are greatly appreciated!
Are you using S2E or Darktremor apps2sd? (That wouldn't be the cause of the problem, but would change the way you'd troubleshoot it.)
I really don't know what either of those are. I use Titanium backup and the android app manager to move the apps.
k, just checking. I'd suggest trying with a different SD card if you have one to see if it works with that. If it does, then I'd try reformatting the original SD card to see if that gets it to work again. Just make sure you copy all the files off the SD card with a computer first, then copy them back after reformatting.
Okay it was my SD card. I've moved everything over to a 2GB card now. Problem is, I can't get anything to read my 8GB now. I tried formatting after I backed it up, but it failed during the format and now neither my computer nor my phone will read mount it. It's obviously corrupt. Is there any way to fix this? I can fit most of my stuff on my 2GB card, but I'd like to save the 8GB if possible...

Try this program: https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/
It has revived an SD card for me in the past. Hope it works for you.
okay I got the SD formatter. I've inserted the 8GB card using a working micro-SD to SD adapter in my card reader and the program recognized the drive and shows the correct size (7.39 GB). When I try and actually format the card, though, it says that either the drive, or the card is not supported by it. :\
I figured updating the drivers for my card reader would fix this, but I have no idea where to find them...
Some thing you might try:
1) Make sure the lock switch isn't engaged on the microSD to SD adapter. I had to tape the lock switch in the off position on my adapter to keep it from switching into the on position when I plugged it into my card reader.
2) Try formatting another SD card to see if it works.
I don't think you're going to find any new drivers for something as simple as a card reader.

There are many variations of that model... Go here: http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/home.jsp?nav=Download and find your specific model, then download and install the card reader driver available/suitable for it.

Use an external sd card as internal storage

Today I got a 32 GB, SanDisk Micro SDCard, mainly for the use with Google Music (I have a 7,200+ library). However, I didn't find a source which had a solid solution, to at least have Google Music use the external sd card. So, I just messed around with it, and I found out how to Swap (reverse) the sd card 'locations', properly.
In vold.fstab, in the directory /system/etc/, you have two lines. Edit them with Root explorer's included "text editor", or any other good text editor. Make sure you have r/w on. Find the below two lines:
Code:
# external sd card
dev_mount sdcard_ext /mnt/sdcard-ext:none:lun1 auto /devices/platform/tegra-sdhci.2/mmc_host/mmc3 /devices/platform/tegra-sdhci.2/mmc_host/mmc1
and
Code:
# internal eMMC
dev_mount sdcard /mnt/sdcard 18 /devices/platform/tegra-sdhci.3/mmc_host/mmc0
What I did, and what proved successful (to use both internal, and external storage, which are reversed), is this:
Code:
# external sd card
dev_mount sdcard_ext [COLOR="Red"]/mnt/sdcard[/COLOR]:none:lun1 auto /devices/platform/tegra-sdhci.2/mmc_host/mmc3 /devices/platform/tegra-sdhci.2/mmc_host/mmc1
and
Code:
# internal eMMC
dev_mount sdcard [COLOR="Red"]/mnt/sdcard-ext[/COLOR] 18 /devices/platform/tegra-sdhci.3/mmc_host/mmc0
Replace the regular lines, with the red lines, save, restart your phone, and BAM, your internal is now marked as external, and your external, is now your internal
I use Stock 154_5, Unlocked, rooted.
Enjoy, and press the thanks button
Also, you can revert them back, if you changed them. Just put the stock code back into the file.
Also, I just discovered:
You can only use the internal storage, when connecting to a computer. The 'internal' (which, we switched around), will not be detected. If you do connect your device to a computer, after you disconnect it, the 'internal', storage, which is really the external, because we switched it, will not be detected, and you must restart your phone.
I'll test this on MIUI. I have the 64GB version. Same problem.

Now my device has recognize my ext sd card as sdcard. But my device cant recognise my internal sdcard, so i have lose my root explorer. and I couldn't reedit the vold.hstab file back.
I have try to hardreset, and try to reinstall root explorer, but it always give an restart and error : "process.media force close "
From my understanding the failure of installing the root explorer because my device can't recognise sdcard anymore
I go to setting--> storage , I found the sdcard is not detected, only usb storage detected

Man am I happy I came across this thread!!!
I've been reading forever in some of the rom threads for an answer to this question! A few of the roms I've tried out had the internal and external storage swapped with no option to switch and that kept me from using them because I use internal storage for apps data and such and then my external memory card for backups and personal files!
The only 2 roms that this can be fixed in is jokers CM9-unofficial-ICS rom (there is actually an Advanced Option in Settings) and the MIUI.us port (there is a storage mod flashable swap, which didn't work for me, and there is an option in the Aroma installer to choose what you want for Internal Storage).
Now that I've come across this, imma try it out and see if I can't get it to work on some other roms I have used!
Thanks for the discovery! I'll let ya know how it works out for me!

I hear you there! The ICS roms rock! Jokers ICS rom has been my favorite due to the option to switch to use Internal memory for apps/app data. The other CM9 variants (AOKP/AOKPCB) had it default to use external memory as storage for apps/app data with NO option to swap. Now that I came across this, when my battery is a little better than 37% lol, imma do your mentioned edits!
Only difference from what I see from stock is that instead of "sdcard-ext" its "emmc". My current setup has "emmc" set as sdcard-ext (external storage) and sdcard as, well sdcard (internal storage) lol.
My issue has been that those have been swapped where "emmc" = internal storage and "sdcard" = external storage. With it being that way, it makes it a PIA to restore from Titanium Backup.
But this is all a thing of the past haha
I'm glad I'm not scared to read (like I feel like a lot of users are). I've seen a lot of posts where ppl were asking about how to swap the storage locations with no solid answers. Granted I didn't come across this solution immediately either...BUT I did and I plan to link to this thread and give you props in hopes that others find this useful as I know others are definitely having the same issue!

I just successfully tested this on the AOKPCB from and it worked perfectly! Not gonna lie, that makes me VERY happy!!
Maybe everyone typing thanks could actually "THANK" this person?
Works on tablet
Ok tried this on a cheap tablet that I bought for playing around like this. An Arnova AN 7G3 7" with 4gb memory, 2 gb internal and 2gb internal sdcard. It was close to your file, all I had to change was sdcard and extsd. Before I did the switch and after seeing someone had trouble with apks after the switch, I made sure to move all apks to tablet, then copied all folders from sd to extsd. I also made a copy of the orignial vold file, just incase. Changed vold file rebooted and everything was great. Made a copy of altered vold file, then replaced with orignial and rebooted.....all still ok, replaced file with altered file and rebooted ,again all ok. Moved all apks that I could move to sdcard from tablet, free up 650mg on tablet. All moved apks worked fine.
AN 7 G3 is rooted out box runing stock ICS 4.0.1
Thanks for the info

[Q] how to replace nook 1.4.2 with cm7

I just purchased a nook 16gb tablet and want to replace the nook software with cm7. I have been reading and there are so many different methods I'm not sure what to do. Can someone point me in the right direction? It has 1.4.2 on it and I want to completely replace it with cm7. No need for the nook software.
1.) Make bootable CWM recovery SD card, found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1446987
2.) Download CM7 internal version, found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481826
3.) Download latest gApps, found here: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Latest_Version/Google_Apps
4.) Place the CM7 zip and the gApps zip on My NOOK internal memory (mnt/media partition).
5.) Boot into your CWM SD card (plugging into the charger may be necessary to get it to boot from SD).
6.) Wipe dalvik cache
Factory reset
Install the CM7 ROM from internal SD card
Install gApps from internal SD card
Reboot
7.) Enjoy!
Thanks for the detailed answer. Will this give me access to more than 1gb of space or do I need to repartition the memory as well?

You will still need to partition. If you live near a bn store you could have them do it for you since you haven't changed anything yet, but it isn't that difficult to do yourself.

Note: having B&N do it will give you less space to use than if you do it yourself.
I used the repart.img from the bn 1.42 factory recovery to get 8 gb. Is there an easy way to get more space?
Here is the way to choose how much storage you want divided between partitions. Just folllow the directions and you should be okay.

Yes, you should be able to get the partitions back to factory stock if necessary. However, many people have used this method without trouble, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Well so far I have cm7 installed with 8 gb of usable space and haven't had any problems. Thanks for the info and reassurance. I will try to repartition it again after work.
I notice everyone seems to be running cm9. This tablet is mainly going to be used by my daughter to read books, play games, and watch side loaded video. Is the current build sufficient for that or should I wait for a later one?

If I were you, I'd stick with CM7 for now, at least until the devs publish a release candidate with the 3.0x kernel.
For what your daughter is planning to do, CM7 will fit the bill nicely; the only thing to be aware of is WiFi hangups -- you need to show her how to turn the WiFi off before turning the screen off, or show her how to reboot the tablet.

Everyone is definitely not running cm9, as of a few weeks ago, according to my poll here.
With that said, unless your daughter plans on using Netflix/higher end games, I'd check out CM9. The CM9 .04 version is extremely stable aside from hardware acceleration.
I was referring to the people responding to my questions based on their signatures. I will have to check it out. She won't be playing any high end games.
I installed cm9 and gapps then repartitioned the internal memory. Everything seemed to go fine but I can't see the internal memory from my pc. Unless I have an sd card mounted it doesn't even give me the option to turn on usb storage. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
For rock solid stability, since it would be used by your daughter, stick to stock firmware, root and install gapps via memory card the img file and apps are posted in relevant thread in development section for rooting 1.4.2. than install a launcher of your choice i prefer holo launcher as it gives the ics feel. All other builds cm7 and cm9 are battery suckers.
All roms dont support micro sd and internal memory together Stick to stock firmware. Try disabling adb debugging mode to enable usb file transfer.
I guess if i would open my eyes I would have noticed it is listed as a known cm9 problem. I really like the look of cm9 but think I'm gonna have to wait till they get a few more things working. I never really considered stock with another launcher. I may play around with that a bit and see what I like. Thanks for the suggestion.

[Q] CM10/Win7 - How do I get USB storage to show external SD (instead of internal)?

I've installed HTC sync and Android/Java and have my EVO4gLTE rooted. I'm running Decks CM10 and love the interface. The problem is that when I turn on USB storage, only the internal SD card shows on my PC. When I would run stock Sense, it would show the external card.
I would much prefer to see the external card without having to physically remove it or copy to it using a file manager. TWRP has the option to mount internal or external SD's, and Sense gives several options when the device is connected to the PC.
I've searched multiple times and have yet to find an answer to this.
Big thanks in advance for any assistance.

Thanks for the suggestion, but that didn't work. It only shows the internal SD card and not the external one.
Doesnt cm10 see sd as external instead of sd2? I know there was a mod to switch it around to flip it around so it sees the sd2 as sd(1).
Look in development section.
I thought the mount point swap was already included in the newer builds

Thanks very much for responding! I was wondering about two things, though:
1) will this script reverse the cards as seen only by the PC during USB mounting, or will they be reversed to the internal apps as well? In other words, will everything that was looking for something on SD0 not find it because it's now seen on SD1?
2) will this affect my external SD card such that I should back it up and/or format it beforehand? I know I should back it up anyway, but I was just wanting to know what to expect.
I really appreciate your help and input.

I tried it and it does indeed swap the drives. That was excellent work! I will probably run the script again the next time I do a full reset, since several of my apps will need to have their settings changed to recognize that drive as their location drive. By the way, do you have a script to swap the drives back?
I'm a little surprised, though, that considering how configurable CM10 is, that the ability to choose which drive is mounted to show as USB storage is not also configurable. With my Xoom, both drives show up when the device is connected to the PC.
Thanks again

By the way, do you have a script to swap the drives back?
I'm a little surprised, though, that considering how configurable CM10 is, that the ability to choose which drive is mounted to show as USB storage is not also configurable. With my Xoom, both drives show up when the device is connected to the PC.
Thanks again

if you do a full wipe it will revert back. other wise it will stick through upgrades.

Depending on what you need the access for external SD for, OTG may work for your purposes..a little tempremental at times but may work for your purposes..

[Q] Dead / Bricked Nook Tablet (8 Gigs)

Hi everyone,
First time poster so be easy! I have poured over these forums for a couple of days to try to find a fix for my problem. So far I've found a lot of things to try but none seem to work.
I have an 8gig Nook Color Tablet that somehow I deleted the EMMC partition during a flash from the SD card. I was running Cyanogenmod 10.1. Now all that happens is it comes up in Clockwork recovery. Here's what I've tried in an attempt to fix it:
Tried the BN_142_recovery.zip file from the SD card. It boots and starts to install, then gives the RED X.
I've plugged the device into my computer and used ADB to check the partitions. I ran parted /dev/block/mmcblk0. It did find errors and fix the partitions.
I've created both a bootable Clockwork mod and TWRP SD card and tried to install every recovery I can think of from the forums here. That includes the Adam's live Ubuntu (doesn't work on 8 gigs it would seem), Brickfix.zip, every partition fixer I could find for tablets (most seem to be for nook color so I didn't try those)
I've tried booting into Cyanogenmod off an SD card, run goo manager to download an internal image and flash it that way.
So far it all comes back with "unable to mount /emmc/". Forgive if the forum answer is there but i have searched since Saturday and either I've over looked it, or I didn't think it applied to me and maybe I'm wrong. Thanks!

Wow you've tried everything I can pretty much think of. Have you just tried using the SDC image file? Write it to an SD and boots cm10. You can check your internal partitions by using the file manager then.

Hi datallboy,
Thanks for the fast reply! Once I run the file manager, is there anything I'm looking for in particular with the internal partitions?

Here's a picture of my internal partitions.
You should all of the following partitions (ex ROM, bootdata etc.) Rom /devconf is the location of your device information. Thats serial and MAC address and such.
If you have the partitions then maybe you just have a bad boot image.

datallboy,
OK I got Cyanogenmod running from the SD card. I opened file manager and got to the root, and I have the same directories as you so maybe there's hope! What would you suggest the next step be?

Since you got the SD Boot to work can you connect to the internet? Either check in your internet settings or your rom/devconf folder to check if your MAC Address is there or not( you can also check other device info from rom/devconf.)

OK I'm online wireless with the nook, running off the SD card still. I do see rom/devconf in file manager and there's a bunch of files in there. There is a MAC Address file and serial number file too. I checked those and they are correct! It's sounding better...

I don't understand why you would get the red x during your repaprt.. that's usually caused by bad boot or ROM partition. If you're fine using an SD image everything will work fine for you. There's images for CM10.1 if you'd rather have that. It runs just as fast as internal.

Looks like I spoke to soon! It booted up into the Nook firmware once but now it's back to the red X. Weird! Well I can run it from the SD card for now since that works. Is there anything that can be done to fix the boot or ROM partition?

Ok the plot thickens, but maybe this is helpful. I checked the file manager again and now looking in the ROM directory in root, there's NOTHING in there except a file called MAX17042.bin. What it's doing now is going to the N on the boot screen, you see "Read Forever" for half a second, then it says "A problem has occured. Please restart or contact customer service if it continues". So it's trying to get to the nook firmware now instead of Clockwork, but I'm still stuck

Odd because your internet still works... if you get the problem occurred error its usually the boot partition not there.
I would just use SDC image. You might mess it up more if you try anything else.

I agree at this point! A working nook is better than dead Thanks again for your help. If I get feeling brave again I may play around some more to see if I can fix the boot partition.

Actually I have one other question! If I have a nook here that's rooted internally and working properly, is there any way I can make a backup of its entire contents and dump it onto the dead one? They're both identical.

Yeah you can make a backup in your recovery program (cwm or twrp) then transfer the backup to the other, boot into recovery and restore.
Hi guys. I am reading that you are having problems still and noticed a small detail in your OP. You state that you have a "Nook Color Tablet". Are you aware that the Nook Color is a different device than the Nook Tablet, and therefore the ROMs etc are different? Are you sure you are on the right forum? This is the Nook TABLET forum, not the Nook COLOR forum. OK so I didn't take the time to follow the thread line by line here, but I did notice this possible discrepancy in your OP. Just making sure you are seeking answers in the right place. Forgive me if I am pointing out something you already know.

Hi Snooch,
Thanks for pointing that out! I didn't even notice. I definitely have the Nook Tablet TABLET. Just a typo on my part. Sorry for any confusion!
So if I'm understanding this correctly about the backup, I can take a Nook tablet that's rooted internally, boot off an SD card with clockworkmod and make a backup of that. Then boot off the card from the dead nook and restore that backup, and that should hopefully correct it? Then from there I should be able to restore the stock Barnes and Noble image. So far it's running fine on flash so I'm not too concerned. My father is using it though so I wanted the stock firmware on there just in case he happens to wander in Barnes and Noble with a technical problem and forgets to take the card out!

It may work to sort of repartition your dead nook. However if it is true that it backups all partitions then the serial number and Mac address would be the same. You'd have to have different ones in able to use the internet. But that shouldnt be a problem since the dead nook can run the SD card and use internet.
I've never made a backup using cwm, so I'm not sure if it backups everything or just data and sdcard. Its worth a try to move the data over to the dead nook.

The backup function of Recovery typically back up 4 partitions of the NT emmc: /boot, /recovery, /system, and /data. Depending on the particular Recovery program (CWM vs. TWRP) and its specific version the backup function can optionally backup the /cache partition. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37515697&postcount=31 for more details.

Hi everyone!
Sorry to bring up an older thread but I have good news! I had to wait until I ran across another 8 gig tablet. Well, luckily my friend got an 8 gig nook tablet just last week. I took a bootable SD card with clockwork mod on it, and made a backup of it. Then I put that in the dead nook and booted off, restored the backup and PRESTO! The default firmware for the nook tablet has been restored! The only problem now is the serial and MAC address are missing. I'll do some more research on that with these forums.
Thanks for everyone's help so far.

You can't use backups from other nooks, it causes internal info problems. You should have used a repart image if you wanted to restore stock...
Your serial number and Mac address are on your device. S/n in your SD flap if you can read it, Mac address on the inside of your nook (network/WiFi card most likely ). Use a SDC image to load cm10 and start the file manager. First go to ROM/devconf to find device information and enter your serial number and Mac address.
