I got a wierd problem. My galaxy S2 refuses to shut down.
When I shut the phone down without a USB cable connected then the phone turns black and the 'menu and 'return' button lights up then the phone vibrates. at this stage before the buttons turns black and the phone was totally shut down. now instead the buttons are still lit after the vibration and then the phone starts up again.
With a USB plugged in after the vibration when shutting down I get to the screen where the battery indicating charging is shown, but as soon i remove the USB cable the phone starts.
I got a youtube clip showing all this and I will update the post as soon the 'audio swap' is done.
The power button is not stuck.
It's not rooted:
Code:
Android version: 2.3.3
I9100XXKE7
2.6.35.7-I9100XWKF3-CL276555 root(at)DELL101 #2
GINGERBREAD.XWKF3
I cleared the cache in 3e recovery. No change.
I fully charged my battery. No change
I drained my battery to 0%. No change
I tried another battery. No change.
What's the deal? Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
I'm asking this in order to avoid sending the phone to service since it most likely will be gone for a couple of days. I will not try stuff involving rooting the phone since I need to have the option of sending it to service without them refusing the phone due to rooting.

The deal is as always step one backup your data and via recovery factory reset .
Saves the service centre doing just that and may fix the problem .

Hello,
Factory reset was one of the options I was trying to avoid. However I just performed a format/factory reset. And the problem is still there. When I shut down the phone restarts.
Also to add to the confusion the phone can also enter a state when I'm in the battery charging screen (Not booted phone) when a thermometer with a warning sign is pressent. However, I have waited for hours with the battery unplugged and everything is cold. That warning seams wierd to me and might be the root of all evil. That screen is pressent without a USB cable plugged in and that is also abnormal.
Any other options?
Thank you for helping.
/Anders.
I recorded the problem.
I cant post links in this forum due to:
"to prevent spam to the forums, ALL new users are not permitted to post outside links in their messages. After approximately eight posts, you will be able to post outside links. Thanks for understanding!"
but paste this search string to youtube
"galaxy refuses restart" and it's the top clip
alternatively add "/watch?v=eBB_3qtgj68" after the youtube url.

Have you tried to hold down the Power button for 8 seconds? OR a battery pull for 10 minutes?
Regards.
yeah you should try and pull out the battery...
i had the same problem after I used the JIG on my phone.. it refused to shutdown, and kept rebooting it on each try to shutdown..
i pulled out the battery for awhile, and plugged it in and out to the charger..and it worked.
if it's still nagging you, try flashing a new kernel
Yes I tried pulling the battery and also used a battery from another S2 without any changes in the behaviour.
They talk about this problem at androidforums
androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2/377331-spurious-battery-temperature-warning.html
Seams like there is no known fix for this problem yet.
I turned in the phone to the local service center today. We'll see what they say.

Maybe your power button is faulty or stuck. Do you have a case? Is it somehow holding the button down after you release it?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
Generally this is caused by a dirty or faulty USB port. Shorts on specific pins with specific resistances will cause different behaviors.
Try cleaning the port with a dry clean toothbrush. If that doesn't work, take out the battery, and try cleaning the USB port with a q-tip and a small amount of rubbing alcohol. Then let it dry before putting the battery back in.

I've already tried it and no luck. The technician told me that it is the USB Port problem sometimes also because of overcharging the phone. The USB Port can be fixed immediately but the problem is my SGS2 is a Korean S2. They told me that the port is different from the one's that they have here in the Philippines. Is it true?

Even i used to have these problems. Phone shows charging or usb cable connected for no reason out of the blue. Device wont simply shut down and would start up again.
What i did was perform a hard reset. Pull the battery out first and clean the usb port a lil bit. After some time it vanished

Until now, it's not happening to your S2 again? How did you clean the USB Port again?
Well nothin much...i just took a little cotton and cleaned whatever i can. And then i kept the phone off for about a day or two. And when i switched it back on voila the issue had disappeared
The only problem am facing now is the home button issue taking me to voice command. But then again i froze it with titanium backup. No issues after that

And yeah...been 8 months since i last encountered that problem. Another thing is i used to Yank the device out from the usb/charger cable when plugged in. Now i carefully remove it without much force. Maybe that helped too. Just saying

Hello everyone,
My vibrant will only power on when I plug the charger and then the phone will start. If I don't plug it in, it won't start, it's dead and have no response. Also if I don't plug the charger and remove battery and return it in, it also doesn't start. Only with charger.
Rebooting works without charger. The battery is fine, it lasts 3-5 days, did a power off with 100% and won't start.
I have also tried clearing battery stats and davlik, also did a complete whipe and reinstalling rom again and the problem still presists...
I am also running on stock rom/kernal./ (2.1 eclair)
Thank you for your answer.

Hi guys, I’ve had the s2 since it came out in the UK and have just rooted it as I wanted to try the custom roms out (never done this before, ever).
So I went to galaxys2root.com and followed his instructions to root the phone using odin and the said tar file.
Next step was to backup the phone by going into recovery mode and following the instructions through video. However when I press the power button to shut down / power off the phone it will just restart again without me doing anything.
The phone will stay on and works fine etc, I can use all the features but can’t shut down. I did go to thre CWM app and creat a backup on my SD card using the app which was done dine and the phone restarted but I still want to be able to shut the phone down.
Any help guys as I’ve tried using the search option and Google but can’t find anything useful. I tried JJEgan suggestion of doing a reset but it did not help. One post said try refreshing kernal but I don't have a clue what that was about, never got that far in the tutorial. Have only just rooted never mind installing a new rom.
Just a quick update:
I wa uccessfully able to apply the FoxHound_Otacon_V1_LP4_ICS_GSII_By_SnakeS rom but I stil get the same problem.
Any idea guys or is the phone damaged?
This is usually a dirty or damaged USB port. Try cleaning it with a dry toothbrush first. If that doesn't help, take the battery out and clean the USB port with a q-tip and a little rubbing alcohol, then let it dry before putting the battery back in. If neither of these work, your port is probably hosed and you need to get the part replaced.

I was getting a similar issue before I rooted the phone. I used to get a error message saying voltage too high, charging paused and got my phone back today from the o2 repair centre as it seemed like the micro usb port was damaged. Got it back today and it was working fine so I thought ill decide to flash it and install a custom rom. Oh well if it still doesn't work after your suggestion ill ship it back to o2 to fix.
Thanks again.
probably won't help but i had a similar issue and it was no more powah causing the issue. real pain when battery died and phone was stuck in a constant reboot cycle
Solved by using a degreaser/solvent remover (had no 99% alcohol) and toothbrush. left it to dry overnight and its working fine now.
thanks ctomgee
hi everyone,
i was camping last night and charged my cellphone in the tenent and two hours later i notice my cellphone and battery was a little wet due to dizzle rain.
Upon inserting my battery (without manual turning on), the cellphone immediately turn on with Vibrant logo and boot looped.
I plan to soak my cellphone in the uncooked rice bowl, but im not sure if its a hardware problem because the cellphone can be on.
1.any idea how can i recover my cellphone?
2. is this software or hardware problem?
As now, i can not manually do the download mode and im hesistant to plug my cellphone to PC via usb cable due short circuit.
Note: My vibrant had a rom version miui JB 4.1 by Jrong.
I would dry it as you said then try to just power it on or boot to recovery. From recovery reflash your ROM. If that don't work, try DL mode and use Odin.
My phone acts screwy from steam from the shower but a reboot usually solves it.
Because I am hard, you will not like me. But the more you hate me, the more you will learn.
I had the same experience with my phone it accidentally fell into the water once and had the same problem it gust boot looped I kept my phone in the sunlight for about 30mins with the case opened and the battery removed from the phone and after 30mins it worked fine hope your phone also works just give it a try and hope that this works

thanks for the tips guys.
by the way, do i need to remove all the screw drivers and dry the internal circuit of the vibrant?
That would be up to you. One of my cousins dropped her phone in a bowl of milk a few weeks ago and it powered up just fine. It zapped her sim card reader and her touch screen was unresponsive, though.
Could take the battery out and put the whole phone and battery separated in a container with rice and after a day or so you may get all the moisture out, so long as no damage has been done already you'll probably be fine.
after 2 hours of soaking my vibrant from uncooked rice, i tried to perform the download mode, but instead of getting the download mode logo, i get a charging symbol ( small sun rays).
is my phone unrecoverable?
Yes it most likely is. It seems you didn't get DL mode thus just charging of PC. Have you tried to power it up?

2. after odin, will i root again my vibrant ?

If you Odin, no, your internal storage and all of your pics/video and such should be intact. Think of it as a separate area for storage.
After Odin yes, run update.zip and then flash the ROM of your choice.
hi thanks for the reply,
by the way, does anyone know why my vibrant automatically turn on (without pressing power button) upon inserting the battery?
This makes the manual download mode very frustrating to execute.
note: my vibrant and its battery was 1 hour rain soaked last sunday.
I don't have any informed answer to give to you. I know they can do some funny things upon being wet or exposed to liquids.
Maybe its something internal like mobo, or maybe something got zapped around the power button causing it to think its in the "power on" position, even if its not.
After you get done rice drying, we'll see where we can get with it. I'm not a hardware guy.
i got another questions.
Before executing the odin application, is it require to install again the samsung vibrant drivers?

Well, not if they have already been installed. As long as you know they are there and working you should be alright. Ultimately, if nothing else works after say.. a few hundred thousand tries, you could install fresh drivers and try different cables and such.
Since your phone starts automagically when you insert your battery, make sure your holding the combo buttons before ever inserting battery, and get that USB cable in there real quick like.
Oct 15, Mon: Soaked uncooked Rice for 2 hours. Still Upon insertion of battery, it automatically turns on and boot looped. I cant go to Download mode.
Oct 16, Tues: Soaked uncooked Rice for another 15 hours. Still Upon insertion of battery, it automatically turns on and boot looped. I cant go to Download mode.
Oct 17, Weds: I observed that when I quickly insert the battery. it doesnt trigger the automatic power on. So when I manually turn on, the boot loop stoped and I was back to my previous normal boot up.
Oct 18, Thurs: A. I noticed that the volume and powers buttons are very sensitive that when press randomly, it will trigger a restart and boot looped again.
B. I observed that when I wake my vibrant from sleep mode, it will take 3 to 5 seconds and i have to press the power button repeatedly to trigger it to wake up.
Oct 19: When I manually press the power button, it does not turn on, but I charged in laptop via USB cable, it shows the charging circular symbol, and I can enable the download mode.
My questions;
1. Since my the week's history of my device is very unstable, is it safe if I flash odin ?
2. however, im very hesistant to flash odin since I think that my device unstable issue is a hardware related. what do you guys think?
It's really up to you. It sounds like the damage has been done. If in the same boat, I'd back up my photos/videos/media and flash things if you want. As you say, I believe its all hardware related, but if it works well enough to use as a device to play with ROMs and test out features, go for it.
Personally I don't think your going to return it to a normal working state. Not without some replacement parts.

Hello friends,
My phone is not at all charging when I am connecting it to a charger. I have tried with different chargers with same result. When I connect the charger, it shows the charging battery icon and it also does not charge when I connect it with USB through a PC. I could charge the battery using another handset and it does charge without any issues on that device. I am totally clueless about this as it was charging normally some days back. The battery does not seem to have any issues and I do not see any problem with the chargers also as the phone shows charging status when connected to a charger. Please help me with this.

Try boooting into recovery and clearing cache and dalvik cache.
It's also possible that there is dust or lint in the charging port on the phone. If some but not all of the pins are making a connection it is possible to still see the charging animation when the phone isn't actually charging. You can clean the port by blowing into it as hard as you can, and then clean with something llike isopropyl alcohol.
Have you recentlly changed roms or anything?
Go into settings>batttery and see if theres a rogue app or anything which is eating battery. I would think though that if there was an app using enough power constantly to prevent the phone from charging at all, the phone would be getting quite hot.
There's a couple of ideas for you. Try them, then report back and I'll help you further if needed.
As suggested above, try cleaning the USB port. If it still doesn't work then there is a huge probability of USB board gone bad. You can get it replaced cheaply on any mobile repair shop or even cheaper if you want to do it yourself. Follow Keith Ross' guide on USB board replacement.

I have purchased it recently through a refurbished seller...I also have noticed that swipe unlock is also not working and when I am pressing the power button, I am not getting any menu like we usually get with reboot, flight mode, etc. when I press it for a couple of seconds, it will simply switch off. The phone is giving a decent backup once I charge the battery through an external battery charger and as far as the software goes, I do not know if any changes have been made to the rom by the seller...I am not able to boot into recovery also using the volume up + menu button + power button combination...
Can you get into download mode with volume down + home + power?
It's strange for the phone to switch off without any menu..
If you can get into download mode I think the best thing to do would be to install gingerbread stock, and then work your way up until kitkat via ICS and use a custom kernel such as Mackay.
How to return to stock rom...
