Moving this thread to Q&A as I originally posted it on general:
I recently bought a nook tablet with 1.4.0 version of the nook OS and managed to root it using the usbdriver and nookandzergy script after a brief struggle (mainly involving getting the usbdrivers loaded as my computer had pre-installed drivers). However, after rooting I am finding that the nook is not charging anymore. The battery icon says that it is at 61% and charging, however the battery charge level is actually going down. I tried charging with the tablet turned off but it didn't help either. I am using the charger and cable that came with the nook and these were working fine before the rooting. Any thoughts on what could be causing this behavior?
just keep it in and maybe it is the percentage that is really off
rooting... does not change hardware
unless through your 'struggle' you managed to damage one of the pins in the usb or the nook itself( may happen from insertion and removal over and over again)
Looks like the charger is busted
was able to charge using the PC and my phone charger. Will be getting a replacement charger from B&N.

I'm wondering if the Nook Tablet uses the same USB charging cables/plugs as the Nook Color?
If so, I'm guessing a USB filter plug for Nook Color also works with the Tablet.
I'm already looking out for misplacing my charger and being stuck with a dead Nook until I can locate a replacement. So far I'm not finding aftermarket NT chargers, or NC chargers relabeled as NT-compatible.
I believe you can use the NC cables to charge it. It was answered in the FAQ on BN.com but I lost the link. And the NT cannot be charged using another cable other than the stock one. At all. Well -- that's not entirely true; using a different cable will not let it discharge...and I have noticed that over time it VERY slowly charges it.

NT and NC use the same charger and cable.
Awesome, thanks!
ok so with my gf's nook COLOR it seemed to suffer from the known issue with charging. i.e the "n" symbol will light up but wont actually charge. Does the tablet suffer from the same dilemma? Just wondering because I am debating maybe picking up a nook tablet for her but since she doesn't know anything about this and i dont feel like messing with it so often I figure I'd save myself the headache . Thanks
It's not a bug. You need to use the charger that comes with it or another USB based adapter with a high enough output
You can actually charge the NT with a microUSB cable connected to a computer. I believe as long as you have the screen turned off, the battery will charge. I've charged it with the screen off and with the NT completely powered off.
I forget where I read from but the NT cable has an extra 12 pins which enable fast charging when plugged into the adapter provided. So keep in mind that it will take many more hours to fully charge the NT when connected to the USB port of a computer since the output is much lower than the adapter provided.
the oem charger was used with the NK. I just wanted to know if there were any reports of the NT having the same issue.

There are no reports of the same issue. There are also no custom roms for the NT.
I never experienced the issue with either my NC or NT.
We dont have any custom roms.
update solved issue
I'm having the same issue...I think it might have something to do with the new update that was released a few days ago. I went on a trip to Florida last week and fully charged my tablet before leaving. While on the trip I got the notification to update, so I did. The battery lasted me the rest of the trip and it wasn't until I got home when it started dieing did I think to charge. Went to charge the tablet tonight and no charging.
Called support, they had me plug it into the computer and it still recognized it. Even used the charger head with my phone usb cable and it worked as well so it can't be the charger even though ASUS is trying to say it is. As of right now my tablet is 100% dead and I can't even get on it to factory reset the thing. Totally disappointed with this.
Hi. I have just up graded to .14 with the OTA update in the UK.
I had the same problem and solved it by taking the pin unit off the charger and putting it back again. bad contact between the charging unit and the pin unit. I have to say I am not impressed by the quality of the charging unit.
The keyboard will charge up the tablet until it is completely discharged. tab has priority.
If you still have the problem with direct charging of the tablet, you might have a good look in the connector: to see if there is and fluff/ paper shreds etc in there causing any probs.

Usb cable looks fine. When plugged into dock + tablet, works flawlessly. Take away dock.. tablet will not charge.:-(
Must be on the software side or of physical connection of the usb cable and the damn bevel edge of the tablet.. looks really awkward from the backside when you have anything plugged into the tablet
had same problem called ASUS did a software data wipe and it started charging again, must be a conflicting app
hope this helps you
when you say software data wipe.. you pretty much mean do factory reset right? which will cause loosing root?
The original charger that came with my Flyer died a few months ago so I resorted to charging it with the provided USB cable....but today, that stopped working too. I tried using the car charger (its the high capacity micro USB with the notch) and that didn't work either.
I've now resorted to using a normal micro USB charger and when it's plugged in fully, nothing happens. But when I pull it out by 2mm, it starts charging.
Is this normal, or is the USB port on the Flyer on its way out? Is there any quick fix or will I have to open it up and replace the PCB?
Thanks for any help anyone can provide....I dread the thought of losing my Flyer since it keeps me organised and on top of things!
I bought a new HTC high capacity charger off ebay and it's acting just like the micro USB chargers: when it's plugged in fully, nothing happens. But when I pull it out by 2mm, it appears to be charging. Despite this, I've also noticed that sometimes the percentage charge decreases even though the orange LED is on and the display shows that it's supposed to be charging. This happens even when I have the WiFi etc off, the screen on standby and tablet not in use.
It's quite temperamental, I can't find a pattern to it and at this rate it seems there will suddenly come a point when it won't charge anymore.
How can I fix this, please?
Backing up to SD card
I just got off the phone with HTC support who suggested I try to do a factory reset to see if that solves the charging problems. However, this leads to another problem as given how awkward the USB port is being on the Flyer, I can't plug it into my laptop to do a backup. Is there a way of backing everything up to the SD card? Even app data? This is turning into one big headache.
Will Rerware's MyBackup do the job? My Flyer isn't rooted...
My mom and dad found a White Nook and it says Critical Battery Alert. I had it on the charger that they found with it from close to 10 pm to around 6 am and same message and I tried another cable with that adapter and nothing changed and I have tried another power adapter and nothing has changed but it does show an orange light next to the power cable slot light up but it has never powered on at all and I have no clue what is wrong with this Nook because I have never used a Nook before

Is this a Nook Tablet or Nook Color or Nook 1st Edition? The micro usb charging socket on the Nook Tablet is deeper than normal and you definitely need the B&N cable to get a good connection (the micro plug on the cable is longer than normal). It sounds like you are describing one of those cables--it has a light built into the black plastic plug? Orange generally means charging, green is done. The B&N charger is also much higher amperage than the typical usb charger so if you are using a charger you just had around rather than an actual B&N one it may take a lot longer to charge.
It may be that the battery has just given up entirely. These things are old, after all. But before I decided to get rid of it I'd probably open it up, disconnect and reconnect the battery and try again. You should be able to find illustrated or video disassembly instructions via Google. You could probably find a replacement battery if you wanted to go that route.
As far as I can determine it's the First one ever made and I found a Battery on eBay for little over 13 dollars and I guess I wait to that comes in and see what that does

So you have a Nook 1st Edition (or "Classic"). Since you will have to take it apart when the battery arrives you might as well take it apart now, remove the battery for an hour or so and then put it back in. Then try charging again. Some posters seem to think this solves the problem of the Nook locking up when the power runs out.
There's no forum on XDA for the Nook Classic, and unfortunately the nookdevs are gone but here is a link to an archive of the work done for the Nook Classic, including custom apps if you root the device.
There was a recent posting on the Nook Simple Touch forum by someone who wanted to root their Classic and finally found a good method, if you get it working and decide you'd like to extend its functions.
And, finally there was at one time a reasonably active community of Classic users on the Mobile Read forums.
Thanks for the information but I don't know if root it or not I just want to get it to work right now
