[Q] Can't root device. But it says I have. - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Having some odd issues.
I was rooted but I decided to unroot and go back to stock.
Now I want to try a new rom so I went through the rooting procedure. Unsecure kernel, then run s2root. It says its perm rooted but when I reboot the phone things act up. Rom manager doesn't say im not rooted, but any action that requires rooting just freezes the app (not the phone). I downloaded a basic root checker and it states im not rooted. But s2root says I am
I used the following.
GT-I9100_XXLP6_insecure kernel.

I'm not sure how to proceed next.
When I try to go into recovery, I don't get CWM recovery, I just seem to get another basic one which has none of the features I require.
Any thoughts on this?

Flash a stock rom and than flash CF root from Chainfire for your rom and you`re done. You`ll have su, bb and recovery.

Lol ,
you are on a Very old leak.
flash over a No wipe Off leak like hazerd rom.
ore flash a CF root by odin

Root + CWM .

Edit: Found the right kernel. So far so good. Thanks!

Well my excitement was short lived.
I've tried multiple kernels. Every one has an issue with mounting the internal SD card. My phone is now usless at the moment because I don't have any other roms on the card to install. I cant put any on because it wont mount. Giving me a unable to open ums lunfile.
I have SensatioN ROM 3.0 ICS ready but that installs Kernel CF-ROOT 5.4 which causes a panic, can't even get into recovery.
Currently Im stuck. I have no idea how to solve this. Any thoughts?

Giving me a unable to open ums lunfile.
Search XDA for that topic it was very recent and i think they may have found a fix in the post .
jje

Did a search, found some people trying to use SiyahKernel v2.6.14 so tried that. Can't get into recovery or boot. It's like my phone has gotten worse since I tried to unroot it many months back. The primary issue, so far, is that I am unable to mount the sd card in recovery. So I can at least put some roms on to install. At the moment my phone is rom-less.

Can you not flash stock rom via ODIN .
jje

I tried this rom GT-I9100_XXLP6_original, but I cant mount SD card from that one.

You should follow jje's suggestion: flash with ODIN.
And: don't use a leaked firmware. I suggest you use the last official GB firmware, just to check that things are working. If this is the case you can go ahead, but you should stick to official releases and root them with CF-Root, as suggested by others.

I will root using another method for now, but I'm wondering why it didnt work?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028
use the update.zip from somewhere in there
superoneclick never worked for me, always ended up not responding just after starting and i had to close it with tas manager

Try using the Toolbox for Vibrant, you'll find it in the dev section or in the Vibrant bible. For some reason it has always done what or programs couldn't. Good luck.

why root? there is no need to root in JFD to get CWM working. here is the update.zip, put it on sdcard, and boot into it, and then flash CM7 by hand. BAM! you're golden!
no need for root.
Yea just copy update.zip to sd card, reboot into standard recovery, apply update.zip, hit it a second time and then boom your in cwm.
You do have usb debugging enabled when your trying to root right? And usb is not connected as a mass storage device? If you do it wont work...!

the noob guide I wrote has both methods, each with their own update.zip
I don't like superoneclick. neither does your pc's antivirus.

That Noob guide is titled for rooting method.
so that thread is misleading because it only install CWM without rooting the vibrant phone.

Option A is for rooting.
Option B is for installing CWR and then flashing a new ROM straight away.
That is actually how I rooted my with Option A and messed around and cleaned the bloat from my stock ROM before I decided on which custom to flash b/c I hate Superoneclick and have never got it to work correctly on any phone. Some others have, I haven't.

Thank you for this clarification.
btw, i plan to use method A.
it seems steps 3 to 5 (OP Noob Guide) is exclusively for method B.
1. can you share me your experience in the steps 3 to 5 for using method A?
2. Do I have to Select Reinstall packages again for method A ?
If all you are wanting to do it root your phone, just download Option A.
This is what I did (without ever plugging my phone into PC once).
1. I downloaded Option A to my SDcard.
2. Booted into stock Recovery and since it was already labeled Update.zip, I just installed it that way. (You could rename it something like Rooter.zip and then you would pick the option in Recovery to :install from SD
3. Booted up and made sure Superuser.apk was there. It was.
4. Went to market to download CWR (free version) and installed it.
5. Made back up through CWR
6. Removed Bloater, blah blah blah and not once did I ever plug my phone in. Maybe I got lucky, maybe it was something else, but it worked for me. Later on I did copy all that to my PC because as you know, links do tend to get broken around here.
Less than a week later I had read and picked out custom ROM and flashed that. Most custom ROMs have a recovery already built into them.
Good luck and remember the first thing that you should do whenever you Root a phone is to get into Recovery and make a back up then and there, so that if/when you ever have to warranty your phone, you can restore it and remove the SU.apk and they will be none the wiser.
Note that Option B does have CWR included and I have read here and there that CWR free isn't in the market for some reason. Not sure about that though.
Thanks a lot. its a great help. i will try this.
it seems the free version of ROM manager is not anymore compatible in Android 2.1
Whitehawxx (spelling is probably off on that) has a 2.2 full bloat in the Dev thread if you want to use that and then you can use CWR from market. Just read the OP. Good luck and I am out for the day.
Thanks for the suggestion but I will root from stock 2.1 and just install an old version of ROM manager from 4shared.com

if I follow your rooting method (A), is it safe to flash a miui gingerbread mod roms (miui nb or miui galnet) ?
to paraphrase, is it safe to flash from a newly rooted Android 2.1 to custom rom Android 2.3 ?
assuming I successfully flashed to Android 2.3, is my Super User still intact?
I just apprehensive about your method A, because some rooting methods (Z4root) when transfer to another firmware can cause a lost of Super user permission.

I have found a way to root the softbank p01d wich is in some aspects a similar phone. see link: http://d.hatena.ne.jp/naba_san/20120729/#1343534208
If there would be someone who can help, that would be really great!
And it would help other Panasonic eluga users too because there are already some topics asking for rooting.
Thanks
I was thinking: if I could make a custom recovery from clockworkmod custom recovery builder and root it
from there.
would this work? and how can I extract recovery.img from a non-rooted phone?
I know I could just take it from a downloaded firmware but as far as I know there are none on the internet.
thanks

Edit: I just found a japanese software update : panasonic.jp/mobile/support/fota/p04d/download.html
I downloaded it and extracted the *.dat file. In there are some files: mtd5 (320bytes), mtd6 (10MB), mtd8 (161Bytes), mtd9 (8.51MB),
mtd10 (207kb) and mtd13 (10.2MB). They have no extension and I can't open them.
I know they are partition files so I renamed mtd8 to mtd8.img (my guess for the recovery partition) and submitted it to the clockworkmod builder site.
Let's see if this could bring rooting the eluga a little closer
Update:
I have found the partitions of my phone :
Now i have to pull the original recovery from mmcblk0p11 (I think).
I tried it with: (in adb shell) /system/xbin/busybox dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p11 of=/mnt/sdcard/recovery_main.img
But it doesn't work because it needs root for that
But I can access busybox because I accendently have been able to copy it to /system/xbin
Don't know how but it works and I can't copy any files to /xbin or /bin anymore. Otherwise it would be easy to root.
Any more help would be really helpfull because i'm not an expert modder. I know how to work with commands an adb though.
I also have a dualboot with ubuntu and windows so maybe if there are some linux tools that could do the trick...
thanks
Keep it up !
It seems that noone cares about dL 1. I would appreciate to take away the camera shutter sound and boost volume in music a bit if rooted.
Please post any updates !
I'll do that But at the moment it seems i'm the only one trying to root this phone
Anyway: Time for the next update:
With the X-ray security app I discovered that my device is only vulnerable to the levitator exploit.
so i made a script using that exploit:
Unfortunatly this is also giving me an error :crying: and this is the only exploit that "could" work.
So, I need some more help!
Also tried the m9.r00t.apk app (wich uses the levitator exploit). Nothing happens.
grtz
I tried every single exploit, including these:
d.hatena.ne.jp/isakulion/20120619/1340101173
www22108u.sakura.ne.jp/files/p01d/
And here is a wiki www34.atwiki.jp/eluga/pages/18.html
If I could just dump the default recovery, I could make a Clockworkmod recovery. The panasonic can flash a update from file storage.
so if I could convert that clockworkmod recovery to mtd11 and zip it in a *.dat file (standard file format for software update) I could flash it to the phone. And try to root it from there.
But first I need to dump the original recovery.
I could use some help
Next update:
I updated the ADB drivers from Superoneclick with those from the panasonic P04D ADB drivers.
Now it doesn't hang on step 7 but it installs busybox. But then the app freezes
Screenshots:
I also tried this method:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1477752
I think my phone doesn't have fastboot I tried all button combo's but the only thing I can get into is stock recovery.
And if I type: fastboot devices, no device shows up.
@ Mods: maybe it's better to move this thread to here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=565

Hello,
where you able to root the Panasonic dL1 Eluga?

today i decided to buy this pretty phone for my lady .. because of the price and because as of today an ICS update is available ... but yes, a way to root it would be very nice :highfive:
it is possible to have root access with ics update? please check
ICS not working for me
Just tried running the Panasonic Eluga ICS update, and it tells me my phone is up to date (2.3.5), oh dear.....
uhm, cancel the ics update app and then re-install i hear that someone has this problem
news?
HI...i am the user of this model but the model name not same. so, the eluga ics update i cant to use, any one can send the elugaics update apk to me?:crying:
Eluga factory reset
Hi guys,
i got my eluga yesterday and ran straight into Problems. My SIM-Card i not recognized by my phone (But i know it works in other phones).
Then I tried to update the phone. At first the "smaller Gingerbread" update, which worked fine.
Still no change on SIM functionality.
After that I tried to get the ICS update running. Strange is, it downloads the package, but when going to instal it, suddenly it is not possible (research: Most others werent albe to download the package in the first place, their eluga said straight away it were up-to-date and stopped the update process).
I tried to do a factory reset with the function provided in settings. This resulted in a bootloop. It gets to the Lockscreen but i cant do anything and then it restarts over and over again. With holding the power button for a long time i am able to get it booting normal again. Just to see that nothing was done. The factory reset simply did nothing except for the bootloop and a cleared user space partition.
I wonder if theres a secret procedure to perform a reset on boot?
I also tried to gain root access but no luck so far...
With root i think the wipe could be done through adb right?
I have the suspicion that the "panasonic recovery" is damaged. This would in my noobish opinion explain why the factory reset goes wrong and the update stops when its intended to instal the rom (both actions update and reset are performed by a kind of recovery program right?).
Iam thankful for any Input

Options:
1) Fresh Root - This is to do a clean root on your stock Asus JB rom or any other custom rom. Great for any users that lost root during an upgrade.
2) Fresh Start - This will give you a clean start by wiping your system partitions (backup your data) then flashing a stock JB image. After the package will do a clean root to the TF201 (Make sure you download the JB update for your region from the Asus site then extract and place the "blob" file in the same folder as this package and rename to "system.blob"
!!! This is for users with from any region with unlocked bootloaders only !!!
I made this because a few users have had trouble with root after the JB update from Asus. What I have made is an automated package that includes the root binaries and the the Team Win Recovery. From FASTBOOT this package will flash a custom recovery then root it. If a previous broken root from an update exist it will remove the old broken root and re-root it. Simple as that!
Additionally I have made another option in this package called "Fresh Start" and what this will do is wipe you tablet clean (backup your data) then flash a new image of JB. Once completed it will flash the custom recovery and root it before you even sign-in and set up the tablet. I recommend this as it will make the tablet nice, clean & speedy.
This assumes you have the correct drivers installed for your device, if not I recommend my Universal Naked Drivers Here

Thanks for the feedback, being its automated you just have to get use the on screen instructions. I wiped and re-flashed, then rooted about 30x in a row with this package so I thought I would release to others to make their life easier.
If anyone has suggestions for any instructions that were not clear enough let me know and I can update for clarity.

You have missed the step that mounts the /System from recovery. This has to be done manually then ADB can push ROOT. It said write failed so i assume this is where you got stuck.
1) Make sure you run as "Admin" just in case
2) When you boot into the custom recovery, you must select the "Mount" icon then then select system. After then you continue with the batch file and all should be good.
I can confirm that this worked w/ my TF201. Thanks a bunch!
I was unlocked and had root plus a "backup" according to Voodoo OTA RootKeeper. I manually installed the JB update via sdcard and lost root plus all signs of root. Being unlocked, I used your method in Win7 (parallels virtual machine on mac) running a shell as admin and everything worked without any hitches. I have root and have verified by Voodoo OTA, Root Explorer, and Titanium Backup.
A big thanks to you for this. I now have root again!

For anyone having issues with the ADB command I would manually try ADB before this package. This package assumes you have your drivers working in FASTBOOT & ADB. Or when you get the recovery flash and you have booted the recovery open a second prompt and try the "adb devices" command before this package pushes root.
I see that you have quite a few amount of post and would think you have some experience, since you are still having issues I would say that the drivers are dirty or something else weird is going on.
You have mentioned you get the recovery flash then booted, at this stage can you go to your device manager and take a screen shot of the Android device? You may have to repoint the device to the drivers but non the less a screen shot would help.
is there something like this but not for unlocked bootloader? I lost root on OTA but i didn't have it unlocked and don't want it to be fore now, I'm just using stock.
Works beautifully!
Thanks for root back!
I'm running CM10 unofficial right now but it's giving me some issues I'd rather not deal with right now...it already has the JB bootloader...can I still flash this to go back to stock[JB]?
I was wondering how to reinstall a recovery and to root again... Thanks!
Note: i just copy command lines from the bat file because i'm on linux.
Just wanted to say: it worked perfectly and painlessly on my already unlocked but otherwise stock prime!
Hi,
Coming from Completely Stock Prime with JB update. Unlocked BL via Asus Tool then used this method and everything went Perfect!! Thanks for your Effort.
I have to say that I'm glad to see you made this, worked great. Tried many other ways to root jb after I flashed androwook and lost custom recovery and root.
You're awesome!

Do i lose erverthink or will i keep my current stock rom whitout installing erverthink.
Thanks works like a charm, unlocked my prime and installed the naked driver let the batch file do it work. back on rooted system with everything working
So I'm trying to do the Fresh start but can't for the life of me figure out how to move and rename the blob file unfortunately. I've got the extracted JB update file on my desktop but can't rename the blob file, right clicking it won't give me the option...
I'm supernoob with this device so can anyone please walk me through or figure out what I'm missing? Please...
Edit: well, looks like I've just gotten myself an unrecoverable bootloader...
more detailed instructions would be appreciated
I am a noob to this device and just unlocked the bootloader.
Can you post detailed step-by-step instructions for your method in the OP or PM. I am also wondering if TWRP version has been updated to 2.3.
Thank you very much.
EDIT: I am all set. Thanks.

Help rooting DX2

Hi guys,
Trying to root my DX2 and I'm not haveing any luck with the script tool posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1818758 . The phone is running android 2.3.5 with system version 1.3.418. I followed the instructions to a "T", but nothing happens. The phone doesn't reboot or anything. Is there something I'm supposed to do before attempting to root, like unlock the bootloader or something?
Thanks in advance,
Eric

I used the self extracting file, just like in the video.
I bought the phone used so I'm not sure of its history. But as far as I can tell, it's completely stock and unrooted.
When I run the executable it just hangs after restarting the daemon. The phone doesn't do anything. I Even tried going into fastboot manually as suggested in the video. No luck what so ever.
install moto drivers manually
turn phone on
enable usb debugging (system/apps/developer options)
connect to pc
change usb mode to charge only or pc mode
if you did that, try toggling usb debugging off/on

Just started over fresh to make sure I didn't miss anything. Did a factory reset on the phone (erased all data on internal storage and sd card). Then I downloaded and installed the drivers (MotorolaDeviceManager_2.3.4.exe). Then I ran the self extracting file (DroidX2_Root_2012.exe). No dice. Same as before. The script stalls after restarting the daemon and phone does nothing. I even made sure I was using the stock Motorola cable to connect the phone to the computer.
Do I need to SBF to a different release, like 2.3.4?
read the Voodoo method

Oh, btw, I made sure usb debugging was on....after toggling it on and off a few times. I also tried both charge only and pc mode for the USB connection.
also depends on what you are going to do rooted
if you are going to flash eclipse, flash 2.3.5 sbf, and retry root
if you are going to flash any other roms, use 2.3.4 sbf, and toot with pete's root tools, or moto fail, superoneclick......

Not exactly sure what rom I will end up with. I figured on starting with a MIUI rom as I've used them on a couple other devices. I'm familiar with them and pretty happy with the performance.
With that said, it looks like I should SBF to 2.3.4 and them try to root. Correct? Any other suggestions?

I would recommend MIUI 2.8.10 because it is running Ice Cream Sandwich ! MIUI4DX2 (the one running gingerbread has really huge problems when it comes to stability with games ! Anyways yes MIUI is beautiful but has some little bugs but as a daily driver i recommend it after you have flashed the ROM you should get Titanium Backup Pro and freeze a couple things but make sure you know what you are doing! I never use v6 supercharge because for some reason it makes my phone run slower :/

More information is needed before we can suggest anything that would help. Start by telling us everything about your phone, what it was running, why you were going back to stock, etc.

Maybe you think we can just look into a crystal ball and divine what is wrong with your phone and how to fix it? No, we need more information. So, since you can't think what information to provide, I'll ask specific questions. You will need to answer these questions completely and thoroughly. (I hope you will, as you did not answer very much of the questions I posed in my last response.)
So lets start with those:
1. Tell us everything about your phone. How long have you had it? Did you buy it new or are you the second owner? What operating system was it running before you started the process that caused your question? I assume this means what operating system was on the phone when you tried to root? One would assume that since it wasn't rooted, it had been stock? Was it working normally before you tried to root?
2. What exactly did you use to try to root the phone? What method did you use, or specifically what did you flash to achieve root? You didn't get the yellow warning triangle from flashing stock, so it must have occurred when you tried to root.
Let's start with that. If I need more after you answer these, I'll ask.

Am I correct in assuming that after you first tried SuperOneClick, the phone was able to boot normally? I am guessing you were able to boot the phone or you wouldn't know that superuser.apk was installed.
And how did you know that the root didn't work?
I'm not sure exactly what SuperOneClick does, but I don't think it will work with stock 4.0.2.
By the way, since the S4 was released, a lot of people have left the I777 forums so I don't know if you'll find anyone else to help besides myself. I'll try to check on this thread as often as I can, but you may have to wait hours between messages.
Edit: Oh and have you tried to boot into recovery. If not, try it now. Hold down vol- vol+ and pwr continuously for at least two initial boot screens. And if you by some chance can enter recovery, I'll need to know that information.
Alright listen, you're gonna be fine.
You really dodged a bullet as your phone is SOFT BRICKED.
This is easily fixed, the phone I'm typing this with had the same issue.
First, get into download mode and make sure your battery is out, this is often looked over. As long as your battery is out before odining you're fine.
Now using ODIN I'd flash an official ROM from the Samsung site. Get that tar/md5 file and hook it up to PDA. Start the flash.
If it fails flashing try it AGAIN.
If it fails IMMEDIATELY then try a different ROM.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda app-developers app
ok guys thank you very much for your time and your patience.
i try to flash the stock rom on another computer and.... BOOM!! the phone is working again. :victory:
thank you!
