Sony Xperia U - Rooting/Custom ROMs possible? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I am a newbie to installing custom ROMs, rooting etc.
As we all know Sony's Xperia U is going to launch near this month's end, I am having a doubt (before I really consider to buy that phone).
Seeing the specs I found out that there is no micro-SD card slot, so my question is based on that.
Is it possible to root, install custom ROMs on a phone without having a separate memory area such as a micro SD card slot? as I do want to try Cyanogen mod and others available after I get an Xperia U.
Would you guys recommend me to buy a phone not* having an micro-SD card slot??
What about backups done before rooting/modding a phone? (since we wipe-off memory banks before/after installing a custom ROM isn't that neccesary?)
Thanks & Regards,
sky770

I guess that all would be possible, because the phone features a sort of 4 GB internal sd card.. there is a separate 4 GB for the OS and apps which will be wiped before installing a ROM.

Samsung galaxy tab with sd slot ?

Hello there. I´ve got samsung galaxy tab 10.1. But i need to know which version it is. Because there is micro sd slot and i can´t find info about this model. I don´t have box so i can´t find more information. Google didn´t help me too.
There is a cutom rom and i want to flash official rom because micro sd slot doesn´t work. But I don´t know which model it is...
Thank you for your help.
Your model should be listed under Settings > About tablet > Model Number. Since you say you have an SD Card slot, you have a Galaxy Tab 2 10.1.
hrasica large
no it isn't because there is unofficial android honeycomb rom. I realy dont know which model it is. It looks like classic 10.1 but with sd slot. But slot doesn't working. I think because there is installed unofficial rom for classic 10.1...
It´s P7500 and there is this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1348533 But sd card slot doesn´t working...
Hello.i also have P7500 with micro sd card slot i dont know which version it is may be our models belongs to early released versions of tab.
And do you use custom rom? Can you recommend me some good rom with working sd card slot ? Thank you :good:

i have to check if micro sd cards works or not, sure i will tell u.i am using latest polish stock rom and having issues like battey drain no deep sleep so concentrating more on this issue these days.
You sure it's a microSD Slot and not a SIM Slot? Would you mind locating build.prop on your tablet and posting it here? (Build.prop is located in /system/build.prop)
Yes I´m sure it´s micro sd slot. It´s not problem. When I get home i will post it here.

Start with a ROM of your choice, just pick one you'd like to try and test it out. If you don't like it try another one out.
*Repeat untill your phone dies

Hi Vinay, Post ur questions in Q & A forum. Ok the difference between custom and official ROM is u ll get ROOT access, many mod from official. Moreover check the caution lines before flashing any ROM.. Watch some videos on flashing ROMs. Also always a copy of main original official ROM..
and a nandroid backup would be also useful just in case something goes wrong
Hi!
Custom rom made by developers that can be from stock (samsung) basis or aosp/aokp (google) basis according to what the devs wants and need, so you need to know about what features and themes are included in the rom so that it would match your preferences. There's sure are a lotta rom out there to try. Be sure to flash only rom that made for your phone and made a backup just in case..
Happy flashing!

Hi to all and thank you for helping me.
The big trouble is that i led my phone in to strange state where only triangle appears and logo of samgung and gets stuck in that state ;after downloading some wrong ROM, my mobile got to this state , now i want to get back in order to wakeup my mobile and brings it too original state as pervious , also to inform you that the mobile was locked to local operator and i tried to unblock and i did mistake .
I just want to have brief guide to how to start as there are many information in this forum and i dont know which tutorial should i base ON.
Basically i just want to know which ROM should i take and procedures in order to install the correct ROM in correct way. I allready has the ODIN installed in my PC and at the moment i can navegate in my phone by Clockworkmode but i dont know what i should do after that , i do know that i can put the ROM in SD Card and try to force the mobile but first i would like to have exprties opinion on this matter, PLEASE.
Regards
Vinay
Well basically if you want to restore to original state, you have to flash the stock rom for your phone or the backup you made before (which I assume you didn't made it). Try to find the stock firmware/rom for your phone version/country/region on sammobile and flash it using odin (put your phone to download mode first). Hope it helps..
P.s: don't worry about the yellow triangle thing, it'll disappear after you flashed the stock..

Thank you sir and thank you all moderator helping me on this ,
Ok ;i understood but if i dont want to go back or lets say if i want to root and unblock without original stock ROM what procedure should i do , please.
I am also having difficulties finding the best ROMS for mobile S2 GALAXY where i should find them , please.
Best Regards
Vinay Navinchandra
Dont mention "best rom" since its against the rules.Youll get a warning and your/this thread locked.
Yeah, it's a matter of preferences if you talked about what best so browsing around and try for yourself..
Some custom rom got pre-rooted, and some need to be rooted first or even not at all. There's lotta method to root sgs2 and it's not hard at all, just google it and you'll get it..

[Q] Galaxy S3 Rom and features

Just bought my first android phone after a few years of slaving to iOS.
It came with 4.1.1, 16gb and just got it rooted (no ROM yet, still on stock).
I have a few questions perhaps someone can enlighten me.
1. I want to install a 64gb card and swap the internal with sd card storage (so that everything will be installed to sd instead of internal):
a). Some people say to format it FAT32, some say exFat (but this is meant to lead to corruption however), which one is better?
b). Is it possible to somehow combine both internal and sd memory to make the S3 think it has 80gb in total internal memory?
2. Looking for a custom ROM that is similar in look with Samsung's stock ROM but without all the bloatware and something with a decent camera app, which one is most stable as of yet?
3. Should I go for a 4.1.2 or 4.1.1 ROM as I've heard 4.1.2 is bad on the battery life?
2. You don't need to rely on another ROMS stability status if your planning to remove bloat.
It can be done yourself with a root enabled file explorer in /system/app. Delete apks such as Samsung Backup Service etc. Before doing so Google safe to remove bloat.
Made for the S2 but its almost identical to S3.

However if you want a custom ROM to do the work for you, Google search those that remove bloat.

Thanks.
How can I take a full backup of my current ROM before I install a new one (I rather have a most basic clean ROM installed and add just what I need).
What recovery version are you running right now if any? Boot into recovery by holding home+volume down+power until device turns off.

Already did.
Is CleanROM a decent stock like ROM? Got decent reviews it seems but my phone is locked to a particular carrier, does that mean the bootloader is locked and it won't let me load up a custom ROM?
I run the international S3 so I have no idea about bootloader. I think Verizon variants come with them. Try tyre dedicated forum for info.

1) a) exfat only has issues in non-stock ROMs, meaning CM, AOSP. All stock-based ones are fine. It allows storing files bigger than 4GB
b) no
2. read the rules, you can't discuss what the best/most stable/decent rom is.
3. I don't have any issues with 4.1.2

Thanks. So for a ROM like Omega (which I think its based off stock) I shouldn't have problems with exfat but since I don't have the need for 4GB+ files, whould it be better to just stick with fat32?
Omega is based on stock, and it won't have any issues. However, some recoveries do have issues with exfat, so if you don't need 4gb files, stick with fat32 to be safe
Why didn't you report the thread? I'm not on the phone anymore, so reported

SGS3 supports 64GB card, and I have one, formatted as exFAT so I can storage Blue-Ray movie as a single file.
for Q3, frankly speaking, 4.1.2 really is bad on battery life, I have tested XXELLA, XXELLC, ZSEMA1 and ZCEMA2. If you really care abt that, I recommend 4.0.4 or use a custom rom

[Q] Info about increasing RAM with SD card SWAP on GT-i9300 using CM11 ROM

Hello dear Samsung Galaxy GT-i9300 users.
I want to know if there is anybody out here who has done this operation.
Increasing the phone's RAM with SWAP virtual RAM by using SD card partition etc.
I'm not sure if I am clear enough but I think most of you guys will get the idea.
I've been doing some research this couple of days and I found a few methods but unfortunately I didn't came across one that is fully compatible with my specific GT-i9300 model and custom Cyanogenmod 11 ROM.
In this method that I tried recently I head to install MemoryInfo-SWAPcheck app to check if my memory is SWAP compatible. It says that "unfortunately my device kernel is not compatible with SWAP".
Like I said, I want to know if there is some one out there whom like myself had the same phone model (GT-i9300) and custom rom (CM11) and performed this operation.
Or if there is somebody out there who performed this operation on a GT-i9300 using STOCK ROM (Android Jelly Bean 4.3). If I would go back to my custom ROM I would only go knowing for sure that it works.
If so I would appreciate If you could give your methond
Hope my thread isn't that demanding and I will find someone who can give me some tips or advices.
Thank you very much in advance for taking the time to read this thread an potentially help!
Have a gread day everyone!
UPDATE: Flashed STOC ROM, worked!

[ P780 03-2014 >+ ] Custom Recovery and repartition ?

Hi all,
I'm one of the people that have the P780 made after 03 2014 by now we know we have to use the special bootloader with the flashtools and all is working fine etc. We can also replace the recovery with a custom one but for me it will not work as it suppose to work. So installing a custom recovery isn't worth it.
But now i'm wondering is there anybody out there that has a working custom recovery on a P780 later then 03 2014 ?
And did anybody repartitioned their phone space on a model later then 03 2014 ? Mine is complaining about space on the phone memory. I already copied almost every app to the memory card. But after the 4.4.2 update the phone memory is 1,02 gb free and it's just sitting there doing nothing
Maybe we could start a thread specially for the 03-2014 >+ models and if we got custom recovery working ? and there is a rom builder with some spare time he/she could make the 03-2014 >+ roms without the need to replace the bootloader.

Hi,
Sorry for my late answer I have a 4GB version. And I know that we can install custom recoveries but they are kind of useless (for me it is) if we cannot flash roms trough them. I saw you are using the vibe2 rom from needrom also. I think it's one of the best roms we can have for this phone but i would like to try others also. Is there a way we could flash roms on the after 032014 phones that are made for custom recovery ? because we need the special preloader for our roms.
I'm not a rom chef at all but if there is an easy way to convert all the roms for phones made after 032014 I would be gladly helping to change them.
BTW stympy you are the Lenovo p780 goeroe ... they should make you the moderator here .. Thank you for all the effort you put in this phones forum

Hi there! Lets understand one thing: there is no problem flashing custom zip roms from custom recovery, even if you have the phone produced after 03.2014. Zip roms are not afecting the preloader, only the ones who must me flashed from PC. Sooo.. in the conclusion you can flash zip files with no wories.
Oh... and one more think: with custom recovery you can backup your full ROM and restore if something goes wrong, flash new apk directly to your system, flash new modem software, root your system and more... In my opinion this is the best think ever if you want to escape the stock rom provided by your phone producer.
Soo good luck on flashing zip files from custom recovery. :good:
