majority of new android apps are not compatible to our phones now...sad to say ...we can't change that...after a year of being such an awesome phone, now it's slowly dying...we have already pushed our o1's performance to it's limit, a bunch of tweaks can never change the raw performance..I learned myself a lesson to never buy a low end phone if you're going to stick to it for more than a year because it always gets unsupported and obsolete...jelly beans and future android versions might be ported but we can never get the "playable", "enjoyable" and "Supercalifragilisticexpialidociousable"...that's the honest truth, most tweaks now are now implemented to cm7 itself, if you actually add and add more tweaks, be warned it will slow down your phone, the best thing is actually just to stick with the best kernel and stock cm7 rom that's all i can say..
you might ignore this and might not believe me but that's the whole truth, from stock to mik's cm7 to adfad666's cm7.2, i haven't receive any REAL "faster", quicker and lightning speediest rom...same old performance in games, same old performance in ui, same old performance in everything...i have to actually say that the STOCK rom WILL ALWAYS be the MOST STABLE rom you'll get...but might be a little slower because of some limitations and bloatware...
You can only push the device so far, honestly tweaks only work in small pecentages

i was really disappointed when i was waiting for temple run game for how many months, all i got is incompatiblityness and then some loyal o1 user will say, somebody will port it don't worry!...omg people someday will actually lost trust on you cuz you ask for everything and not to do it by yourselves...and yeah you may expect instagram MIGHT be not compatible with our phones...after waiting for how many months .____. and Angry Birds Space might be the last OFFICIAL angry birds game for our phone because of degrading performance..
tbh I only love cm7 because of it's themes...
Edit:
first we get incompatibility from resolution and now from the cpu and then Android version....it's getting worst actually...and actually when i was searching for some changes on cm7.2 on github, the cm team actually threw almost ALL build.prop and init.d scripts and tweak because they don't think that it's even worth it to be tweaked..and only a waste of space..and will only just make CM7 unstable and less functional...

@trettet that depends...not everyone can afford to buy a new phone. For example I think I'll stick with my o1 for another year.I am not in loved with this phone and if I had more money I would have bought an Galaxy Nexus.I like it and it offered more than I expected. Not even now, after almost one year since i've bought it I'm not bored of it.I can always find new apps, games, try new Roms, themes and all this stuff. So in conclusion...who can afford buy a high end phone, who can't .... stick with o1.
I agree that it's time to upgrade and that this is a low performance phone, but what annoys me it's that seems that you are mad about a game that not runs on this phone, I really don't understand why you kids use this phone to play hq games or say "Im a hardcore gamer on my p500" that's ridiculous, this was never a phone for games, this device is just for surfing the net or use social apps, if you wanted to play games on a device on this range of price you should buy an iPod touch 4g

Truly said! Not everyone can get a new, high-end phone , with latest HW upgrades!! At least due to age limitations, I.e, the high-school students like me. I always come to know everyday about a new phone, again with some new technology and much better HW!! At first look-I say "I am gonna get it !!!!!! "But unfortunately I can't do so! (Father/mother restrictions Y'know!!)
@trettet, You are right ! You can move to other phone, if you are allowed to do so by you father/mother/uncle/aunty blah blah!!
This is the right time to switch, before it gets more outdated............

Do you really mean it??? or just a rush of sentiments
like others said not everyone can afford a new phone. but i dont think it is smart to buy a phone now because everything you will get is a faster cpu and bigger screen. so is it worth to spend 200€ or more for that? i tryed my friends sgs2 and i was not impressed at all. it is like o1 with bigger screen. the only difference noticable was by playing games and if i want to do that i would rather buy xbox. and after all we will also get a taste of ics. i think in a year time smartphones will change drasticly and it will really pay out to buy a new one so i will stick with o1 for another year. but this is only my oppinion .
I agree with Roq, this phone was not meant to play many games...if you want a gaming phone, get an xperia x10 or any xperia phone..personally I think games are a waste of space and resources...how cool would it be to have a phone with interchangeable hardware (could you imagine swapping ram like you would with a desktop PC). ANDROID is rising, and I'm pretty sure microcomputers with android OS will soon be in everything from medical equipment to cellular devices...tweaks,just waste space...I obviously see no difference in speed or performance because at the end of the day the phone only performs as fast as the processor allows it to. I will, however say that some tweaks do increase productivity and performance but only by a small margin..all these new roms coming out are pretty much all themed roms with 50 tweaks and achep ics cm7 theme and custom frameworks and ssystemui's...makes me wish I had a good computer. I miss developing challenges and I really wish I could dive into cm9 and ics developing, I worked alot with htc sense ui for g1 but back than it was still amend scripting and amonra was the choosen choice of custom recoveries and also when you had to actually read the steps in order to gain root. There was none of this superoneclick or gingerbreak stuff..you had to know adb and terminal emulator commands

i also agree with roque ...if you want to play games, go buy a PSP
if you want to install more and more apps use a PC it has more multimedia capabilities to make you happy.
optimus one already gave us enough entertainment thanks to the wonderful and intellegent devs who diligently worked for this phone , if still you're not satisfied and have no choice go buy a new one yourself, why whine? this phone is still useful for calling and texting ..
still millions of O1 users love their phone..

Yep.time is coming but let push the time away as far as possible.

Agreed with the topic starter. We need to upgrade. Even ourselves. Everything changes. We have to cope with the new ways and new things. We ca't even push ourselves to a new place with just knowing and using the old ways.
Regarding to our beloved O1. I think this is the best and the only phone that an entry android user must get. In terms of price per performance it is termed as a "good buy". The easiest and the simpliest way to learn how to tweak or customize your android. Lot of developers and participant in every aspect, ROM, kernel, apps etc etc. This phone is the "stepping stone" of modding and gaining one step ahead of normal android users. I'm really lucky i choose this phone as my first android phone. Now it's easier to adjust to another android phone. Samsung, HTC, Google etc.
Everything has to end. Nothing last forever. ( no 3310 jokes please LOL). We definitely have to adjust and leave our beloved O1. But we never must forget at what, who, when and where we learn how to become "not just your average android user".

It's all about the uses for your phone. The biggest game I play is Fruit Ninja, but mostly Mahjong. Otherwise I use this as business phone, calender, news reader. Given those uses, this phone will last me another year or more easily.
I like this phone because of its size. I don't want a big honkin phone with huge ass screen. That is what my laptop is for.
I will be sad when this sucker actually dies and I have to get a new phone. I really don't care about the latest games. I have never had a problem finding launchers and productivity apps for O1.
C'est la vie, specially with technology. Really no use crying about it. This reminds me of people complaining their netbook from 2 years ago won't play games. Yup, was never really meant to...

hi , does enyone know if there will be a port from android to lumia ?
because that would be pretty cool , having te possibilit yto run android on this epic phone

It will never happen. Two completely different systems. I'm coming from Android and I for one would not want to ruin this phone with putting Android on it. I find WP7 so much more modern and refreshing.
I do not miss force closes nor lag.
I'm not negative to the possibility. I'm just sure it's not possible.
Hi,
I don't think it will happen. Due to there not being that many developers for the lumia. I also thing most of the hardware could be used in android, Seeing as the HTC Desire S and the Sony Xperia Arc use the MSM8255 Snapdragon(but i could be wrong, I have only really started developing).
I just dont see any real advantage of running Android on the Lumia. It is already a great device. I could only see thing going downhill if you did. Your device would have alot of lag plus the lumia only has 512mb of ram. And everybody that has used android will tell you 512mb of ram is sufficiant but not enough to run smoothly or run any intense apps.
You could, but you'd have to ask Dark Forces Team and Cotulla to release either a port of MAGLDR or the source to it to modify the chain boot loader.
Something I'd love to see but doubt we will ever see. I personally just got a Lumia 800 and although it's a nice phone the software lapses too much and in too many places so back to Android I go...even if it is the newer Android which is skinned over and too customised!
As I know the bootloader of lumia is very secured and will not allow modifications like dualOS booting.
1. You are crazy.
2. People always want what they can't get.
Technically it is possible. We have already seen examples of porting Android to older WM devices, like HTC HD2, HTC Touch Cruise, but it involves a lot of work and knowledge in system hacking.
Once you have cracked bootloader you can boot whatever you want. All you need to do is to find a device with the same chipset already running Android and port it over. Of course there will be many driver problems like non working, BT, WiFi, camera etc, but hey, what did you expect.
I bet that there is the same question in Nexus forums - How can we port WP7 to Galaxy Nexus
If you want the Lumia with android, sell it and buy the Nokia N9

You're both crazy, why didn't you just go Android? Strange people?
Yeah I bought this phone to get rid of Andrpid myself. I'm so sick of it!
Why the hell would you want freakin' Android to run on a WP like this?? You're crazy, that's clear
Android only has negative sides, WP is refreshing and smooth. I don't see ANY reason why you would want Android to mess up this beatiful phone.
Okay, I'm an Android hater, that's clear, but let me point it out:
Android is a copy of iOS (it's just boring)
It lags all the way
You need a nuclear power plant to keep it running for 1 day
The user experience is not consistent on all devices (not even with the same OEM!!)
Updates? Yes, if you do it all yourself
Open? Oh, thank you for your openness Android, and the malware...
I can go on if you'd like, but I think it's clear why I don't see this as a good idea...
Lol, that was one of the dumbest trollings I've seen, _Madmatt.
For me its WP which only has negative sides. Its locked, limited, the interface is counter intuitive in many places, can't multitask properly, most apps are inferior to android ones, upgrades are rolled out slowly and with the locked product codes you never know if you'll get the next one, etc.
Ah, and android is no copy of iOS, but the wp7 tiles ARE a copy of android widgets, with some functionality removed.
As for the hardware of the lumia 800, it is superior to my 2 years old N1, with a better CPU, GPU, and the same memory. And my N1 flies running MIUI, so even a crippled phone like this should even be better.
Why did I get a Lumia? I was offered it, tried to use it for some time, gave up, gave it to the wife, who is now begging for me to give her her blade back. Even the better screen and camera were insufficient to convince her to keep using the Lumia. She keeps complaining of the apps, of the terrible battery, of being unable to do anything. Even changing a ringtone is a mess, having to cut and resample a MP3 file before being able to use it as a ringtone.
So, it seems like the Lumia will end in a drawer until someone manages to port android or meego to it. Unfortunately as it was a gift I can't sell it, or it would be gone by now.

LOL, you think I have such things? No way mate
Android and WP7 are two completely different beasts. No point in comparing them it's all about personal preference.
I come from Android and WP7 suits me so much better even though I liked the freedom of Android compared to WP. I rooted and flashed roms like crazy. But I got tired of acting beta tester. So much bugs here and there on Android. Specially if running custom roms.
Sure there are more apps also with more functionality. But I prefer the metro styled WP7 apps as they most often fit the design of the OS. That can't be said about Android apps. Often ugly and no one looks the same making the user experience much worse.
The lagg was the biggest issue for me with Android though. No matter the hardware (SGSII) there is always lag because of how the Android OS is built up. Even ICS won't fix this fully with its hardware acceleration. This is a area where Google has failed. Giving a smooth user experience. Both iPhone and WP7 has this and understand its importance but Android can't unless they rebuild it from the ground which I don't think will ever happen.
Completely agree with ^^
I was active Android ROM builder, tester, themer etc for more than 2 years., but I think I just got tired of endless battle with force closes and laags. The biggest problem with android is that it does not run on native code but on interpreted layer dalvikvm. You can try as hard as you want, but you will always need double horse power for the same tasks on other platforms.
That's also explains why WP7 is perfectly smooth with x2 less CPU and RAM while latest Google flagship with nearly desktop PC power suffers laagspikes here and there. While those small laag spikes are less visible on smartphones things are just getting worse with tablets. Today there is no tablet running Android which can render UI transitions with 60fps.
You can read a blog from ex Google employee about that.
How about some Android graphics true facts?
I agree with you guys, after using android from G1,htc hero, desire S,nexus one,sg1 and 2,galaxy nexus,lg optimus black and apple 4 and 3gs with all the cusotm roms and modifications none of them stand above wp7 smoothness. I can say i never had a lag on my phone ever, where android and ios would lag here and there. Again e-mail aplication is just a joy to use,and all the animation how they smooth transit...it never stops to impress me. Ofcourse it has some shortcomings but definatelly will get better, especially with nokia's help.Aplication wise, well i don't use that many apps but the one i used definatelly looked better than android and apple,it's like the have more soul and not look so dull and borring.
At first i did not like the idea Nokia refused android but now i see that they done the right decision,i see it no better.

Well said. I had got used to the lag and didn't realise how bad it was until I got the Lumia.
I got sick of flashing ROMS too. CM7 was nice and stable, but when ICS roms came out I got sucked in. The gapps are all facelifted and are a lot nicer than Gingerbread. But then the ICS roms all have their issues and it just gets annoying.
im on a rooted phone. on accasion, i experience lags on my phone.. its annoying.. how do i eliminate them?
Well first you have to find what is causing the lag? What apps do you have running? Are you over clocked or undervolted?
Are there any specific situations that are lagging?
Well it depends on the parts of the phone. So many things cause lag.
First of all, your CPU could be too slow, in that case you could (almost always) overclock it, so it runs faster.
Secondly, the amount of RAM affects performance A LOT as well. As a fix you could try running less applications.
And last, but not the least, some things cause unneeded stress on the cpu. You should really check the source of the problems.
I would install an app to check how much of your memory is free. Sounds to me like you dont have much free memory so your phone has to kill processes to make room for anything you want to do. This takes time which could be causing your lag

its not the apps. and yes, im underclocked. but that isnt the reason for the lags because i overclocked and i still get lags. also, i dont want to overclock too much for the sake of the battery.
the 1st gen iphone is less powerful than my current phone, which is the htc inspire.. but it DOES NOT lag at all.. why is it that a 5 year old phone outperforms a relatively new phone?

i would say when i scroll through the home screen, it seems like the screens are struggling to scroll. and when i dial buttons on my dialer to move through the menu options on a specific call with those options. the proximity sensor takes a long time to light up my phone when i take it off my ear to dial on my dialer. the iphone, on the other hand, takes a split sec. again, why is a less powered phone smoother than a more powerful phone?

also, i got to reiterate something i said before that deserves great attentiopn in the android community. why the hell is it that the iphone 1st gen outperforms my htc inspire which has a faster processor and more memory? this is really mindboggling. i have read many people complain about this issue before. and they use the old, 5 year old iphone as a benchmark. both phones are based on linux. i suspect that the filesystem of android is far different that that of the iphone. i think this is the problem. its not the phone, its the android o/s. its really sad that an old ass iphone kicks android in the ass when it comes to lags free and smooth scrolling.

First off how do you know its not the apps? What rom are you running? Many things effect how fast a phone runs.
As for the Icrap. IT is easy to make an OS run smooth on a single set of hardware. Not to mention there are is alot less going on inside IOS then there is on android. To be honest most dont really care how IOS runs. Every OS has its issues.
I have no lag on my phone what so ever
A less powerful phone with an old os should be faster than a new phone with the newest os because the new phone has better screen res and clarity, lots of new features that use more ram and cpu, more technological features, many have powerful gpu's that do 1080p hd video etcetera and all that makes a huge impact on performance.
If you need proof check out http://ipod.about.com/od/decidingwhichipodtobuy/a/iphone_chart.htm that compares og iphone with all others and see how the features and chips etc have changed...and that's in an iphone which is not as advanced as its similar priced android rivals yet iphone performance for newer handsets is worse than original even with faster cpu.
Another difference is the og iphone does not multitask but stops things when you interact with it which produces a smoother user experience whereas android does not work in the same way.

Just read a post where you said in another thread that your phone got slower after installing a different kernel but here you didn't mention that.
If you are experimenting with kernels and those kernels made it slower its not fair to then act as if your phone is a stock rooted android as posters need to know if you've messed with such vital part of the os in order to better reply.
Given you yourself said your phone slowed after messing with the kernel, the heart of the phone, isn't it better to restore original kernel to improve performance again or at least mention that issue in your post here?

1st of all (and not to defend apple), the iphone is not crap. if that were the case, i wouldnt have made this thread comparing the lag-free iphone with the cantdroid. 2nd, people DO care about smoothness.. a flood of people have complained about the lagness in android. 3rd, its NOT easy to make an o/s smooth. if that were true, this thread and people's complaints wouldnt exist. also, its a fact that android in tablet and phone are very laggy.. especially when comparing ipad and iphone to it.
i also read that the file system of android has to be rebuilt from the ground up to make it as smooth as iphone.. this is very sad.
I have no lag on my phone what so ever

no offense, but i dont believe you, unless you got a no-sense launcher like launcherpro or 3rd party programs that make your phone "lag-free". i quote this cuz all the android phones i tested have lags or at least shudder when you flip through the panels in the home screen. the iphone doesnt have this problem.

A less powerful phone with an old os should be faster than a new phone with the newest os because the new phone has better screen res and clarity, lots of new features that use more ram and cpu, more technological features, many have powerful gpu's that do 1080p hd video etcetera and all that makes a huge impact on performance.

thats not rue for at least 2 reasons. #1, the iphone 4 has a high resolution. and its smoothness is far greater than many android phones with lower resolution. and #2, its been discussed before from the devs that android is laggy cuz of its file system.
Another difference is the og iphone does not multitask but stops things when you interact with it which produces a smoother user experience whereas android does not work in the same way.

exactly my point, which makes ios far smoother than the android despite the specs.

Just read a post where you said in another thread that your phone got slower after installing a different kernel but here you didn't mention that.
If you are experimenting with kernels and those kernels made it slower its not fair to then act as if your phone is a stock rooted android as posters need to know if you've messed with such vital part of the os in order to better reply.

i installed a unity v9 kernel and it slowed my phone big time. i removed it by restoring a backup. its now as smooth as before installing the kernel - thank god. but its not as perfectly smooth as an iphone, unfortunately, which i wish it was.

OK first your running software that was not built for your phone. It was built for another then ported over. Sense has been known to lag. As for not many apps you are wrong as you are running sense so that in itself is using alot of resources. Second my thought on the iPhone is that it is crap. Nothing more then a beginners smartphone. You can say its not and your have the right to your opinion.
From all of your posts you maybe better off with an iPhone as that seems to be what you want. Remember android is mainly targeted to people like developers and phone geeks that know what is going on under the hood and know how to tweak their OS to fit them.
As for my set up yes I don't run Sense. I am running a custom ICS rom. And no it doesn't lag. But then it doesn't have sense eating up the resources for no good reason.
Try rebooting. Always helps.
I have to agree with the sense comment, its notoriously slow even on some devices its designed for so can only imagine how bad it is on a device its not intented for.
Before you put custom rom on was the phone very laggy? My lg is smooth and is stock gingerbread with a delay upon opening some apps or if I have many apps open it can take time for other apps to initially respond but other than that I haven't got issues like you describe.
The problem with many roms is they are a wip so you can get lots of issues with them. If you have same issue with a stock rom then I would say an app manager would be useful so you can configure the auto start permissions as maybe it could help you.

yeah youre probly on MIUI. its a good rom from what i seen. i'll try a launcher like launcherpro and forget about sense. and i was thinking about turning my phone into an android phone 7. but if i do that, i probly run the risk of draining battery.
i'm a bit interested in MIUI but from those roms ive seen, they look butt ugly.. maybe you can recommend some MIUI for my htc inspire and themes that look cool.

Ok first no I am not on MIUI. I would never touch it. I dont support stealing someone elses work. I am running a version of a CM rom done up by my team. You may have seen some of the roms from the Collective.
The iphone is the best selling phone because it is simple. Most people dont want to mess with their phone. If you think My phone lags you are sadly mistaken.
You say MIUI is butt ugly but it looks just like the Iphone
Now there are many things that can be done to help your phone. First would be to look for what is starting up on boot. Android assistent is a good one. Could try OC. I know you said you UC to save battery and I understand that but what do you expect to happen when you try to run it like that. You UC the CPU and you should expect things to run slower.
Comparing Android to IOS is like comparing a Mustang (Android) to a Kia (IOS) One is meant to be tweaked and adjusted the other is just meant to be used.
As for IOS being smother what do you expect? IT has alot less going on. No widgets to update, no multi tasking and no apps updating in the background.
Now through all your posts you have come across rude out of the gate. Let me give you a bit of advice. Relax man its a phone. No need to be rude.
Android does have issues, it's not perfect but ios has less things to handle so it should always be smoother.
If someone's having lag just flicking between screens in a launcher then there's something very wrong.
A replacement launcher can help, and configuring apps so they won't autostart will mean they will not start automatically which leaves more ram free. Use an app like gemini app manager from android market to do that.
Some apps also start just because you change from wifi to 3G etc and again you can configure these apps in the same way.
A program like setcpu can come in handy to improve cpu responsiveness from sleep state to waking for example but if the original stock rom was laggy it may be a faulty phone as not had homescreen lag like that.
I love my android phone, I can watch a high def 3D movie on it while downloading isos or music and I can play games on it and do photo editing etcetera so I am biased toward it but ios isn't rubbish its just not as feature rich but that also makes it smoother and at times less complex and therefore for some is a better option.

Android copied IOS? Really please do tell me how? Mainly as IOS took things from android like the notifications system. As for MIUI I explained in your other thread about why. I really think you need to do a little bit more research on what your doing. The questions you are asking about installing apps is android 101.
Now After Selling cellphone and plans for the past 10 years I think I know what sells an OS and what doesnt.
You are not correcting me. You have shown me no proof about IOS. You can say its better and I can say its not. It is all about what someone wants and needs. Like I have an old 4G that my GF used as a starter smartphone that lags and sits in a drawer. No OS is perfect so there is no point in arguing about it.
Your right my phone doesnt lag due to being sense less. Not to mention over clocked to 1.2 with 30 hr battery life.
As for what are the pros and cons of each. There are many to each. Doing some research will give you all the info you know.
Now you really seem not to like Android and will never be happy with it. Nothing anyone can do or say will be able to make you happy.
Remember this is a development site so you are expected to put in a little work, like search and reading. No I will not link you to themes that are easy to find. We dont spoonfeed here.
As for me comparing the cars to the OS it is very accurate. Android is made to be tweaked and messed with. If you cant see the diff then I am sorry. Trying to insult people is really kinda pointless. Mainly when your the one asking for help. Let alone insulting someone that has been modding phones long before you knew what modding a phone was.
As for installing other OS on android. The simple answer is no. The only phone that can dual boot Different OS is the HD2 and other WM devices that can boot android.
So here is what I will say. Try them all out and make up your own mind. Now one will be able to tell you what you like and what will work best for you. Android is about tweaking and making it your own.
Buy an iPhone and stop playing dumb. You clearly do not understand, and do not want understand a single thing.
There appears to be a big lack of development for this phone. Just wondering if anyone expects things to pickup? I just come from a galaxy nexus and while I know that that it's one of the most favored phones from the developers side, I'm currently disappointed by the lack of options wet currently have. There is like only 3 ICS Roms and 3 ICS kernels (1 only has OC ability) to choose from.
Love this phone though.

It would be a dream if Huexx had a Sony Xperia S to develop a great rom like Zeus ROM for Optimus Black (i have one, trying to sell it). An incredible and organized work, with a great presence in the comunity, organized changelogs and constant updates! He also developed a nice kernel for CM9 (that original kernel from Cyanogen guys is bugged and crappy) that turned CM9 almost a usable ROM (not for me, since i really like listening music and podcasts with my phone). He did a really incredible work with Zeus! Should we ask him if he have interest in a Xperia S and donate one to him? XD haha! But really guys! Give a look at his work!

mainly because the people have got this phone on a contract there for the bootloader cant be unlocked as of this moment until setool or some other software manage to enable fastboot via testpoint. (exactly the reason i cant develop for this phone atm)
Soon many Arc/Arc S devs will come and support this phone.
Once we get CM9 and CM10 going you should see more development.

this is what concers me too.. i started with galaxy s then galaxy s2.. but after that i switched to moto xoom, then galaxy tab 10.1 and then temprorarly galaxy ace.. i used samsung most of the time because of the unlocked bootloaders but i could never get used to the build quality and never got away from the screen burns of the amoled screen..
so my next preference was htc sensation XE.. this was the perfect phone for me definetely.. i had gread develeopment (since it was backed up by original sensation days), great sound quality and somehow quallcomm CPU and GPU was better than the arm based ones... i know the benchmarks say the opposite but i was using my sensation XE at 1.2 Ghz by setcpu and it was still fast enough and it never refused to play any game i thrown at.. but dust got under the screen after a few months and i sold it..
so my next was htc one x and it was a disaster with the greatest screen i have ever seen.. it was a joy to play with it but the problems were unsolveable for daily usage.. and no matter how much i love playing with my phone, messing things most of the time i need it as a ready and steady phone for daily usage.. with that heat, lack of S-off and other problems i sold it too..
so novadays i was looking at the galaxy note or s3 but then i decided to be realistic.. i love playing my games on the consoles and my computer.. so gamewise any phone would handle me because my expectations are low.. what i want is smooth web browsing, very good audio quality to listen lossless music and a good camera to shoot good photos and HD videos (not like a pro camera but at least sharp enough to make the moment freeze forever to remember later).. so i decided to go for nexus.. but then in a store i realised every galaxy phone had screen burns.. i know there are lots of ways to prevent it but still this time i made a promis and have to live with my next phone 1.5 year at least and i dont want to watch my leds die slowly and seperately in front of my eyes everyday..
so i decided to go back to sensation XE.. the most problem-free experience for me.. i care so much about graphic performance.. i think any CPU can handle anything novadays but GPU makes the difference.. so the adreno 220 in sensation XE was more than enough with the help of low-res screen and it was also OCable.. but then i saw a friends xperia s.. that changed everything.. until then i did not even look at any sony device.. not even accidentely..
now i really can not decide.. i have never been into any sony topics before so i am trying to learn but i guess on the development side xperia S is no match for sensation / XE..
so i am kind of scared about the high resolution of the screen.. XE is getting old and has only 768 mb of RAM but it has S-off and lots of developers will keep it as a legacy device.. besides i do not have to worry about warranty since there is S-off...
on the other hand soy seems to be promising with this brand new device and it seems like they use the hardware better than HTC.. it gives 37.5 FPS on the nenamark2 even with that 720p screen.. but is there any chance that i keep the warranty even after i unlock the bootloader... and what about the sound quality? i know sensation XE was not the best but at leats the sound is clear and there is beats audio.. and "most importantly" will there be any more development? i dont want to buy a device that will be forgotten after 3-4 months...
i know i wrote very long but i decided to ask.. because i have been reading for 3 weeks non-stop and i am more cunfused than i started.. its like android world's nature.. every device has their adventages and disadvanteges on each other.. like a perfect balance and it is really hard to choose sometimes..
^ you can re-locked the bootloader. and here in Indonesia, they (Sony's Service) dont even bother checking the bootloader f it's hardware problems (yellow tints). so i guess it's not an issue, but different country, different policy.
and for development.. SXS has, modded stock roms (2), cm9 and cm10 in development (bug fixing, etc), and official miui. what's more do you want? i prefer this than many development which only modified stock roms, modified miui, modified cm. it's just me though..
actually i prefer one good custom (or stock) rom than lots of roms.. but for example sensation and one x has a camera mod which let them shoot videos with 20Mbps (or 40) and take photos with 0 compression.. and i can tell; lowering the compression value looks like a must for xperia S too.
or you can OC the GPU to get more performance on 3d apps or games.. these are more important than having lots of custom roms in my opinion.. because since ICS came out every custom rom is similar to each other.
what i want to do is generally about unleashing the potential of the hardware.. like in the camera mod example.. i mean, the camera lens is still there but the software uses it much better with a little touch of a good developer..

I've tried pretty much well every single custom rom available for this tablet by now and i still havent managed to find one that actually increases the performance of the tablet. When im running the stock firmware i get about 7500-7600 on quadrant and my browser is really responsive and stuff. There's not been a single custon rom out there that has even performed better then 5600 on quadrant. Is it just me, or are the custom roms not hat good performance wise?
EDIT: By better performance i mean how snappy the tablet feels, using benchmarks as a secondary frame of reference.
Not sure if quadrant is doing a good job. I also am getting same results as you with 7xxx for stock and 5xxx for all CM based ones. Although the CM roms feel smoother here.

I abstained the vote cause the question does not bear a black and white / yes or no answer anymore these days.
In my humble opinion, and I picked up the smartphone / PDA / mobile device modding bug back about when this site catered to the the original HTC XDA almost exclusively, and Steve Jobs was merely having wet dreams about his iPhone (*1)... nodded RIMs have gotten to a state where they are overvalued. Saying a custom ROM is always way ahead of stock is like saying "one device with a fixed featureless fits everyone perfectly".
Custom ROMs had their deserved heyday when the industry loaded up near every carrier distributed smartphone with scrappy bloatware that made you weep. Depending on the mobile OS at any given time it was nigh impossible to get rid of that stuff, unless you flashed the whole shebang. From there on the custom ROM scene kinda exploded along with the market distribution of smartphones and later on tablets, certainly owed to the introduction of Android over older generation closed source systems, which enabled much more in-depth possibilities of adding novel features, fixing stuff that was basically broken out of the box and integrating all of this nicely.
(For a frame of reference: I tossed my PalmPilot and Nokia phone when the HTC Wallaby (Telekom MDA or so)hit the shelves... Early adopter by nature and I thought combining cellphones and PDAs, bother which I used avidly was the most revolutionary idea since the combustion engine. This was generation Windows Pocket PC, basically a PDA with cellphone feature thrown in as an afterthought (the antenna actually doubles a stylus compartment). Phone integration was a PITA on good days. On bad, long work days it might just happen that your moody battery would jump from 35% to flat out dead within a mere six minute phone call. Yet, no biggie right? Well, it was, the devices had no non volatile storage. Dead battery means go home, pray your last phone backup is recent enough and restore the entire thing. I spent a lot of time fixing this device (windows style - shoehorning in binary OS components from newer PocketPC versions and prodding the registry on the phone (!)...) to a point where it was almost usable as PDA only device, supplementing telephonly with a Nokia.
A while later better devices came out, PocketPc was scrapped for Windows Mobile and in high hopes I got a HTC Charmer. This looked like a more solid platform and indeed proper custom ROMa emerged, adding real functionality and allowing to get rid of carrier branded crap, later even RIMs emerged with Windows Mobile version updates never intended for that phone, some even taking the recent cutting edge HTC front-end, the first incarnation of Sense (I think it was called vanilla). I figured the really bad conceptual problems were fixed and merrily went along. But, as god hates my guts, I drained the battery accidentally, only to find that the phone would still go dead, deaf, dumb and wiped despite a good three or four years of technological progress. I was so confident that I neglected backups with that model and basically lost the majority of my stuff again. The Nokia dumbphone was back in the game, the HTC left a dent in the wall that required plaster and a patch of new wallpaper.
TL;DR: The first gen smartphones (PDA with cell module afterthought were such flawed concepts, badly integrated, that keeping recent backups and maintaining it operational took quite an effort on user side, on that sort of negated the higher productivity of using one altogether. But bear with me now, I am still circling around the point or two I want t. Make.
Because a few months after I abandoned smartphones for good (or so I thought) Apple coughed up their iPhone prototype and a few months later pumped it to market. I was amazed (not because of the technological feat, they were more or less throwing R&D money bricks at existing tech and concepts, however they exactly figured out what went wrong in the early generations, fixed that stuff, added fingerdriven multi-touch in favor of stylus driven displays and, this is the real kicker, in a time and age when the cool cell to have was a Nokia 8 Series or a decent, very small flipphone or clamshell they managed to brainwash their customers into what PDA and smartphone adopters at that time already knew - it's totally worth to dump the train of ever smaller telephony only cells for a much larger, more fragile device because of all the freedom and power those things offer you.
I kept my guard and obviously went for Android devices once I got back on the horse. HTC Desire, a backup Wildfire, Desire HD, Sensation, One S and a few tablets along the way. Now, here is the kicker. The Desire ran much better with a custom. The Wildfire could only be updated to a recent Android version with a custom ROM due to HTCs sometimes appalling quick update discontinuation. The Desire HD ran a basically stock custom ROM! But with lots of lovely icon eyecandy, so I stuck with that too. The Sensation benchmarked equally (give or take 5%) but the ROM added novel features, properly implemented, which I decided to stick with. But frankly, it was because I could. I would not have recommended a newbie to Android flashing to take the plunge. My current HTC One S has a recovery downloader and is rooted cause some essential apps I can't live without need it. Full custom ROM switch. I see no point. Android has come a long way. If today I have bloatware I can go to App Manager and disable them. Icon gone, runtime resource hogging gone. Many features that were the selling points for a custom ROM a while back are now natively incorporated.
This is just how I feel about my Sony SGP311 now. It runs 4.2.2 rooted, no recovery yet. This is planned, maybe at some point a stable, close to stock custom kernel to allow some overclocking on a per app basis for XBMC. But other than that it just Danny works. The Sony skin put over stock Androi. Is not that bad, and more to the point it never gave me the impression of hogging the system. Turn off what is useless to you, Office suite, walkway, etc and be on your merry way. It just comes down to what you do with the device, but as a custom ROM junkie who has just gotten off the habit, for me it makes no sense anymore.
Now, if you made it all the way here, I ran two benchmarks on my 4.2.2 root but stock. Maybe they aid you in your decision.

Also, none of the above is supposed to rain on the developers parade or something. I admire your skills and dedication over all those years, and there isn't a single custom ROM that went onto my devices withour a PayPal "crate of beer" donation ever. However, the fiddling, time spent reading up on custom ROM choice, issues and unlocking process etc is just not in relation for me anymore. Those thoughts are yours to reject, spindle, mutilate, adopt, oppose or plainly ignore... Just speaking for myself here.
Thanks for this! I was also trying to decide if I should be flashing a custom rom on my XTZ. I am itching to flash but couldn't come up with any strong reason to do so, probably for battery life and stock look?
Will be interesting to hear from another person who is a strong believer of flashing custom rom on XTZ.

i got slightly better score using a custom rom. Plus i get themes, expanded desktop and pie control which is a must for this tablet. I hope more xda developers develop for this tablet. Will reward with donations
By "better performance" do mean higher benchmark scores? Because any of the 4.3 ROMs I've tried are generally smoother than Sony's 4.2.2.

I prefer 4.2 ATM. I get close to 30 Mbps download speed on this ROM where on 4.3 roms only 2mbps download? Also video cam recording, screen is squashed on 4.3. Other than that they run great but I personally cant feel a performqnce boost from 4.3 to 4.2. I also installed crossbreader and Supercharger V6 script which addresses screen redraw lags, so if there is a slower issue with 4.2 i would have addressed it with these two mods and may not be able to tell.
Hi,
I've read that KitKat would need less resource compared to JB.
Since there are already ROM's based on JB for the Legend, do you think that a custom ROM will rapidly appear based on KitKat for this phone?
Thanks.
No.I don't think there are any developers left on this forum.
I too believe this won't happen, sadly. JB for Legend wasn't such a good idea, it simply can't run smoothly on that device. But, if what google says is true (about the hardware requirements), then 4.4 could be the greatest thing that has happened to this phone in a while. I still use my Legend as an mp3 player, but i would just love it if it was more functional, so i could use it in some high-risk situations (to avoid breaking my GN4). This could be Legends last chance to die with honor
Personally I have the Baked Blackbean Rom on my Legend (JB thus) and I'm rather satisfied of this Rom (thank you to the team BTW).
It lags a bit and there are some bugs but it allows me to play with the latest versions of the apps (I love the latest version of gmail for example).
Give it a try if you haven't already. The Legend deserves a better end than as a mere MP3 player .

I'm also using JB on my Legend, but it is not really that stable (don't get me wrong, congrats to the developers, they did a great job), but it just feels too "heavy" on the phone. My biggest problem was the low amount of internal memory - yes, i know you can create a partition on the sd card, but i've never managed to accomplish it. Tried everything, just wouldn't work. So I really can't use the latest app version, as i can have about three apps installed at a time xD
Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. The app that launches 10 sec after you put your finger on it...
For the internal storage, I use Link2SD, which actually works pretty well. When I check, it tells me that I got something like 280MB in use and still have 70MB free.
I just created like you said a second partition (using a soft [named Mini-Tool if I remember correctly] in Windows while my phone was plugged in USB) and then using this second partition to install my apps.
Are you interested in trying again ? You have another phone but, anyway...
I've been part of legend community for about 2 years now, never got into full blown deving, rather doing relatively small mods, tweeks and stuff for personal use only (read, cutting my teeth with android).
Activity in legend has unfortunately died over the past 3-6 months and I haven't seen much from our last major Dev zeubea for long time, so unless there is a skilled Dev equal or better than zeubea out there that loves the HTC legend, its not going to happen. Even then given that jb version never really got finished to stable version, I very much doubt KitKat would come anywhere near the level that jb reached simply due to lack of source code for the required harware drivers...
Ya never know your luck in a big city...

Well, let's hope such a developer exists than...
KK has been ported to the HTC Desire so there's hope
and sorry to hijack, but is anyone willing to test some gapps? Would be appreciated, cheers!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47101145&postcount=204
Ah cool! That's indeed a good news!
Thanks for the info.
KK was said to be optimized for devices with 512 MB+ RAM via Project Svelte. The Legend unfortunately doesn't even have that much.
But, I ask, why would everyone ideally want to have their Legends running Android 4.x? I don't understand why because although Gingerbread is now running on less than half of all Android devices, it was the last OS on our phone to run fluidly and with stability. With JB and above, Google's cramming more and more features into Google Play services, which really brings down the space the Legend has in its internal memory for apps. KK just won't run like Google intended to on this device. I just don't understand why people want the latest and greatest on a ~4 year old device. Maybe you have your reasons, and I'll respect that, but I can't think of any reason why personally.
It hurts to say, but with the Legend nearing four years since announcement, this phone isn't worth being developed for anymore. It wasn't that huge of a hit, like the original Desire or the Sensation. Therefore, it tends to be more forgotten. It doesn't have the computing power of neither of these devices, nor does it even come close to it, so while the aforementioned devices are slowly getting the bleeding edge, we'll be getting it slower, if at all.
It's a harsh reality, but if you want the best experience in Android possible, it's time to upgrade. ~Four years, that's around two two-year contracts. For Legend owners in Canada, your contract should have been up just this past summer.
This phone will always be a classic, guiding HTC through its brilliant design language with the HTC One flagship and its variants. Its legacy is shown on the devices that succeeded it. Unfortunately, I don't believe it has anything more to bring.
Hi Asovse1,
Thank you for your opinion.
You're right when you say that 4 years are an eternity for a smartphone but personally right now I can't afford a new device that would have for example the screen quality of the Legend (which has an amoled screen while even recent phone still use LCD). If I buy a new phone around 99 $ (my budget) I would have a screen with a poor resolution so the change is not worthy.
I have a JB Rom on my Legend and I can enjoy the last version of GMail for example that has really cool stuff. And this version of gmail runs rather smoothly on my phone, so why not ?
The Legend doesn't have 512MB RAM, for this reason he wasn't supposed to support ICS, but it worked, so while it works with the new version of Android, I will hope that a talented developer will build a Rom for this fantastic phone .
Or maybe I can wait just a few days ans see what the Moto G has to offer...
Cheers.
Hear hear, someone in the same boat as myself. Still using my Legend for daily use. I am on CM7.2 stable. Only GPS is not reliable. Tried a lot higher roms, never worked out well.
I am looking into importing a Chinese phone. Nice specs and an affordable price. Only risk is a broken phone within 2 years...

Hi Wim,
Have you ever tried the Baked one as I mentioned earlier?
I have it on my Legend and use it daily without any problem. And the GPS works too, even if sometimes it needs some time to find itself, once it's done, it works perfectly.
Hello there,
I have great news for all the fans of the Legend: it might get KitKat !
