For those of you who got a Note after having a Skyrocket or the SGS2, what are your general impressions?
I just got my Note yesterday, so the jury's still out for me. But so far, I love the size and clarity of the display. The S Pen is a pretty cool toy. However, the black crush issue is making me consider going back to the skyrocket.
What are the pros and cons for you?
Kinda off topic, but does your skyrocket not have the black crush issue? I exchanged my note for another one because of pen accuracy issues, and my new one shows the black crush really badly. The ATT rep said all of the Samsung phones have the black issue, including the skyrocket. My captivate never had the issue. Now that I experience the black issue, I don't know if I want to keep the note.
Edit: Just saw your post in the black crush thread and see that you mentioned that it isn't present on the skyrocket. That might be my new phone if I can't find a fix for this.
I have had 8 skyrockets...and my wife still has one...
The skyrocket has the black crush as well but it is less noticeable because of the smaller screen and lower resolution.
I would go back to the skyrocket if there were not so many units with screen lines and blobs

Sigh...I guess my solution is to keep the Note and hope that Samsung addresses this issue. My temporary fix is to adjust settings in a screen adjuster app so the black issue is less noticeable.
I simply started using higher res stuff and its 90% fixed

Yea its weird the other day i tried that Youtube video "Moving Star field 720p" or whatever and it was horrible pixelation & such. I went to show my GF today and it was 100 times better lol, figures. But i do still see it on some things though. But i figured most devices do have this.
But most of these "new screens" are without a downfall but have many positives over negatives. For example my PS Vita has a beautiful OLED screen. But being its early OLED technology on loading screens you can see what looks like black blobs of paint if you are in a dark room. It is only seen when the pixels are off and only the backlight is on. During some loading screens you will see this. Never will you see any of it during game play. But i guess the Note is more noticeable being it happens in video playback and such.
I had the verizon galaxy nexus....then the tmobile galaxy s2 which has basically the same processer in my new note.....I have to say the more I play with the note the more I like it....my s2 was screaming fast...though we had more developers in that community ....this note is fast but hasn't reached it full potential by any means..we only have a few devs here, plus its so new...give it time this device will be incredible mark my words..

If I just wanted to play YouTube videos, I could use my browser and that would fix the problem. But I can't even use a wallpaper with dark blacks or it will show that crush all day. It also does it with pictures I take using the camera.
If my Skyrocket has any black crush, it is infinitely better than the Note.
How many of you have helped me report this rather serious graphics issue to Samsung, or the tech blogs like Engadget and Android Police?
Please point all of them to my thread on the subject -- we really need to draw attention to the problem, or they'll never fix it.
Well I owned the Note for 7 days and now I traded it in and got the S2. Here are my thoughts so far.
NOTE - Big BEAUTIFUL screen is great for browsing and gaming. Battery life wasn't great (I thought it would be soon much better). LTE was nice when I had it. One handed operation was something that wasn't enjoyable. Touchwiz lagged a little but not intolerable. Spen was really good.
S2 - Faster stock, not benchmarks but pure going into menus and such. More games are compatible with the S2 then the Note (not even close). Battery life is about 20-30% better with the same use. I was getting 2 hours of screen on Note vs 3 so far on the S2. Perfect size for 1 handed operation. Screen just isn't as clear or bright.
In the end, I am missing the Note. I just refuse to pay top dollar for something that is going to take months to have applications modified for it. Man that screen on the Note is GOREGEOUS!!

Top dollar? I paid the same for both $150. I actually do notice that the sgs2 does seem faster at times but omg is it tiny. I use my sgs2 for runnin and the Gnote for everything else.
What res wallpapers?
All i am saying is i have seen the issue on both...but i also lined up 5 skyrockets and there was an insane difference from screen to screen

Your lucky. For me it was $300 for the Note or $100 for the S2. Note for $150 i would have kept it!

I came over to the Note from the GT-i9100. I'm glad that I did. The extra real estate on the screen is a huge bonus for me.
The SPen seemed gimmicky at first, but that is because the first Note that I purchased apparently had a defect. It often didn't register touches on the screen and I was disappointed. That and the light bleed on the buttons (it was the white version) made me take it to AT&T for a swap to the black one. The fact that this ones pen works perfectly has cemented my decision to keep the phone.
I don't have any lag on mine. It is just like my SGS2 was with a crisper screen.
The only thing that I really miss is the physical home button, but I imagine I will get used to it.
Introduction:
The Galaxy S II came out last year in October on AT&T and was quickly followed by its successor: the Galaxy S II Skyrocket. Running for $99 new and $9.99 refurbished, should you get this or hold off until a newer phone with better specs comes out? Read this review to find out!
Hardware:
The Galaxy S II is composed of hard plastic, but despite that it still feels surprisingly sturdy. The power button is on the right and the volume rocker is on the left. There is a microUSB charging port on the bottom and a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack on the top in the center. Take off the battery cover and you’ll see a 1650 milliamp hour battery that doesn’t excel yet doesn’t fail either. On the front there is a 4.3 inch touchscreen display with four capacitive buttons on the bottom of the screen, still leaving enough space to let you type without hitting home or back by accident. Also on the front there is a two megapixel camera for video chatting. On the back there’s an 8 megapixel camera with flash and the words “Galaxy S II” engraved below that. The GSII has a 1.2 ghz Exynos processor and 1 gigabyte of RAM. The screen uses Super Amoled Plus technology.
Software:
The Galaxy S II ships with Android 2.3 Gingerbread but will be upgradable to ICS at an unknown time… both have/will have the Touchwiz overlay and apps.
Speed and Smoothness:
The GSII might be one of the speediest phones I’ve had the pleasure to lay my hands on. Going from homescreen to homescreen is very smooth with little or no lag. Resource hungry games and apps run like a charm on it and multitasking is a breeze… I have absolutely no qualms with this part of it.
Battery Life:
With every phone there is a problem, and that problem for me would be battery life. Although it’s not the worst I’ve seen (my LG Optimus Slider does much worse), it’s not the best either. Even despite that I can get through a solid day on the stock ROM.
The Two Cameras:
Both cameras are spectacular in their own ways… the front facing camera is two megapixels (much better spec wise than the front facing camera of other phones) and the rear camera takes gorgeous pics. It certainly won’t replace your point and shoot camera, but it’s fine for a Facebook profile pic or a quick snap.
In Conclusion:
I love my Galaxy S II. Although I would recommend waiting for the HTC One X, the Galaxy S II is a great phone for if you’re on a $100 or less budget (on contract of course). I am very pleased with it and I honestly think that my two years with it will be worthwhile.
Good essay, estabien.
Me? I'm no writer so I would just do the introduction as "I bought the SGS2 in Jan" and jump right to the conclusion "I love it".
I let others fill in the body.
Thanks for the review but you are a little late on that lol. Just about everyone here already knows this information. For those who dont and need information to help on their decision, reviews from last year are all over the internet. E for effort

Yes, the gs2 was released on Sunday, October 2nd 2011. I picked mine up that morning at 9:45 am at best buy. What a joyous day that was.

I wouldn't call the Skyrocket it's "successor".. Maybe "hunk of dog crap with an inferior processor and an LTE radio stuffed in it", but definitely not "successor"
Thanks for the review, I am in need of a somewhat cheap replacement phone, and this seems to fit the bill
Yep, I love everything about this, and the only thing that slightly bothers me is the battery life. It lasts more than the whole day when I'm using it as a phone (you know, going to classes, checking for messages, scrolling reddit once in a while). But the battery drains pretty quickly when I start playing games or netflix and ****. I really love this though.
Used is only 10$??? Damn. I paid 150 for new late october.

Yeah.
When I bought it a few weeks ago (upgrading my contract) it was $99 new and $10 refurbished.
Bought a new one a Sam's Club for 48.88 yesterday. I've been waiting for upgrade time since this thing hit the stores. Very Pleased! I did try to upgrade through ATT's website and get the refurb for $10. I received it and it wouldn't power on. Called CS and the overnighted another and it also was the same, it wouldn't power on. No battery graphic when off and plugged in. They were both doorstops. CS returned my upgrade eligibility and I went to Sam's. I had it rooted and flashed within an hour. I gave my Cappy to my 10 yr old son to use for games etc.
Very happy so far.
Between these two devices which would you lean towards.
I have a friend who's interested in trading phones.
I understand I'm losing the S-pen, screen Real Estate, capacitive touch buttons, and micro sd expansion. But are the pro's of the nexus 4 worth the trade?
looking for objective opinions thanks.
The better question is why is he wanting to trade to a phone that's been out for as long as the note has? Sounds like he is unhappy with it and my guess is you would be too

LG Nexus 4 been out since February 2012? thought it was announced in November.
I'm just debating battery life vs the awkward spikes of lag.
For example, I'll draw a picture and midway the rendering of lines are accurate but no longer a true representation of pen to paper.
More like merlin's magic wand. i weave a spell and 3 seconds later it appears.
You will be getting better speeds,a higher resolution screen, and more Rom development.
I would take the trade without thinking twice. Than trade the Nexus for a note 2. I have been seeing even trades for them since the Nexus dropped.
I like my note and I think ill be staying with the note line. Have my eyes on a note 2, just have to get rid of all my accessories before i jump ship.

I never said the nexus was out that long. I said the note was. I read it as you have a note now and your friend has the nexus 4. Seems odd to me that he is trying to trade back to the note.

i was hoping for the trade up to note 2 too. but he pulled out after i didnt have a screen protector. And surprisingly the even the Note 1 has better screen res than the LG. And yeah my bad. Not sure why maybe he wants the real estate.
Like the title says, I've been a Samsung leg humper since the original Galaxy S. In my line of work, I always had access to the latest handsets. Had almost every variant of the Original Galaxy S (ATT, International and T-Mobile 4G version) Galaxy SII again in ATT, International and T-mobile versions, The S3 in the Quad-Core International Version and T-Mobile Dual Core S4 version, then had also both the Note and Note 2.
I just preferred Samsung phones over other Android phones. My most recent addition is my T-Mobile Galaxy S4.
I am currently in the process of returning it! Wow did Samsung disappoint me in this edition. It feels unfinished, unrefined, slap together with a bunch of gimmicky tricks that I disabled immediately after 10 minutes of messing with them. The phone feels cheap... especially in the black version. That back plastic finish and pattern looks SUPER TACKY. They should have at least made it look like the finish on the Note 2's Titanium Gray, that at least looks pretty premium for plastic.
Don't get me started on the software, the phone LAGS. I mean A LOT! I was using a Nexus 4 while waiting for the S4 and boy is it night and day. The Nexus is buttery, the S4 lags in simple tasks like closing and opening the dialer and switching between homescreens, it lags when you open the camera. It stutters everywhere. It feels like a 2 generation old Android Phone, not the latest and greatest. It's quite pathetic really.
The stock keyboard is terrible, it lags when you type fast. It just can't keep up with fast typing. I was even pushed the latest software update a couple days ago which everybody raves fixes a bunch of lag, it helped but honestly the phone still lags and stutters all over the place. Completely inconsistent and frustrating. What really ticked me off was that Samsung disabled flash player support in their native browser and chrome. That was the last straw..
Today my T-Mobile HTC One arrived, I've been playing with it for the last 5 hours and I can't put it down! Well it's currently on the charger right now so I can play with it some more. That's the biggest compliment I can give it, when my S4 arrived, I played with it for maybe an hour and was so disgusted by the lag that I haven't really enjoyed picking it up and using it much since I received it 9 days ago! The HTC feels just so much more refined in everything, it feels finished and polished. Software is smooth, I saw a tiny, and I mean TINY bit of lag during closing a couple apps but it's nothing compared to the stuttering on the S4. Boom sound is overrated I think, the S4 is just as loud (seems almost louder?) but the HTC sounds fuller. I thought I was going to be blown away, but I wasn't. Sounds pretty good though, just not as amazing as all the reviewers make it seem. Camera is nice so far, nowhere near as feature packed as the S4, but it took decent low light pictures tonight. I'll try it again out in daylight tomorrow.
The LCD screen on the HTC ONE is so much better than the AMOLED screen on the S4 in my opinion. Text and everything seems just so much easier and smoother to look at. Everything looks crisp, and smooth.
Well that is it so far, I'm so glad I gave the HTC a shot. This one is a keeper for sure! Goodbye Samsung, you used to wow me with your products....HTC just kicked your butt on this round.
I completely agree that Samsung did not do as well as HTC this time
What is your line of work if you don't mind? I played with my friends s4 today- I have the note 2 and also noticed the lag on stock touch wiz and the keyboard. I put him on nova launcher and it was buttery smooth going through the phone's interface. I know what you mean by keyboards lag but I think Samsung will push an update to smooth things out, which honestly should have been done from the start. I like how the s4 looks with that texture but it is a bit tacky and wow does or attract fingerprints. It's plastic body does allow it to be thinner and lighter though. Each phone has its advantages and disadvantages .
JediX13
gonna give the HTC one a try if i dont like it, hopefuly the 32gb s4 will be out by then
Well after almost 24 hours of use I can report some other findings.
The Camera on the S4 is hands down better in good lighting, the HTC produces a lot of noise even in great light. A little disappointed in that area since I do use my phone to take lots of family photos.
NEED FOR SPEED: Most wanted. Not available on the HTC One but is available for the Galaxy S4. Lame. They have the same processor and the same screen resolution yet the Samsung supports it and the HTC one doesn't. It's one of my favorite time killing games. A little sad there...
The LED notification on the HTC seems to time out after about 5 or 10 minutes, which makes it useless. I sometimes come back and glance at the phone thinking there are no messages because the LED notifier turns off, I check my phone just in case and I have lots of texts and emails. Minus another point for the HTC. The S4 will glady blink all day long until you open it up to check it. This one really bothers me because I rely heavily on the LED notification.
Boom sound still is overrated...
Overall, the HTC disappointed me in a few areas so far... I've yet to find a phone that is near perfect as the Note 2. Which in my opinion is an awesome phone, just needed a little speed boost in games and maybe a tiny bit smaller form factor and it would have been perfect.
I'll hang on to the HTC for a while and wait to see what the Note 3 can offer...... So far the Note 2 is still my favorite handset of all time.
Nice to hear that update. I too miss the LED notification that the S3 has. It's nice having something, but Samsung really nailed the notification LED. I can live with the size of the LED on the One, but it would be nice to have more of it, and different colors for different notifications.
I also agree with the daytime photos. The One is good enough for my needs but the S4 does indeed pull in a great amount of detail.
I do however love "boomsound". I watch a lot of videos on my phone and can clearly hear the difference between the One, my GS3 (which I still have), and my Z10. It might not be louder than the other two, but man it just sounds better. If you do a blind sound test, you can clearly pick the One over the others.
HTC Could have really put a dent in Samsung's sales if they'd included an 8 "ultra pixel" camera.
Some of the things I agree with about the One. But I have a few pointers, I see no reason whatsoever why you're are getting noise on the One. The sensor is far to large to get noise unless you are in low light where it stills blows away other devices. Check your settings.
I've been using the camera in mediocre light with no noise.
As for the LED it is pretty much useless, especially coming from the world's greatest in the Galaxy Nexus. What I did was root and flashed the kernel that enables the capacitive lights to blink on a notification and it doesn't shut down after 5 minutes.
Also I finally heard the difference today between beats on and off. The difference is night and day, you will lose a good quarter volume but the sound is worlds better. Loud < Quality.

I honestly thought I would be one of the few to get the One after having the S3. Looks like there are plenty!
I don't get any noise on my One either.

I owned the S2 and the S3, then I bought the HTC One as well. The S4 is just full of useless gimmicks honestly, and they are marketing it as such. They didn't change much other than internal hardware compared to the S3 and the HTC One is a completely fresh new idea.

I agree. Both are good phones. I bought the one at Wal-mart. Saw that they had a 14 day return policy. I expected to check it out and return the phone. But today the 2 weeks is up, and I just can't make myself give it up.
My latest phones iphone iphone 3g 3gs 4 4s htc sensation samsung galaxy s s2 note note 2 now the HTC one.
Samsung did screw up on their galaxy s3s (s4). I knew they were on this path without a better phone with metal body or any other material besides plastic. Even though most won't admit it people buy the HTC one because of its looks.
I too agree the galaxy note 2 is/was my most favorite phone ever since I got the first iphone in 2007 before that maybe the motorola rzr . The note 3 should not be bigger unless they make it narrower, The note 2 is still too wide.
I have been all samsung phones like you too. It wasnt really the koolaid it was because they did have the best phones since the s2.
HTC one camera sucks ass!
Yes i said it, ok low light its good, but its still 4 megapixels so if you're going to zoom at all there is no clarity.
Boom sound is overrated
my note 2 with volume mod is louder
I hate the HTCs notification!!!
I also hate the battery life. I'm biased because my note 2 lasts a day and half of heavy use without a charge yes 24 hrs + 12 hrs/
I also dislike the ceo of htc. Production delays (because of the 4 gigawiggle pixel) cost over a month of HTC ones sales they lost out on billions of sales!! because of the inferior camera. Why not just put a 8 or 13 megapixel camera??!??
I guess im a little angry because I bought HTC stock and because of the production delay it cost HTC its early lead before the S4 launch.
Both sides made huge mistakes
Samsung if they made the s4 with a metal build would have maybe crushed the htc one.
The HTC one lucked out that samsung didnt.
Because can you imagine if samsung's s4 came in a fancy new metal design?
HTC one metal design no microsd card no removable battery 4.7" screen
S4 metal design microsd card slot removable larger battery 5" screen
I'm good with my s4,i love the design on the one, but I wouldn't be able to live without a extended battery. Both phones are awesome, up to user choice. I just hate people putting rants and complains and blah blah blah. Both phones are flagship phones, they both are new. They both are good.

Yes the HTC one pictures look like they were taken by a home made Lego camera. Very Very bad.
I can't believe how laggy and how horrible this thing scores on benchmarks. I am getting 118k on AnTuTu and 1200/3200 in Geekbench. Worse than the G5. I wiped it and ran the tests again with the same results. About three hours into ownership and I am totally disappointed. It's probably going back to TMobile.

Why ? A 18:9 has less screen area than a 16:9 with the same diag measurement. This has been noted in reviews of the phone.
As noted in this review, the total screen area is actually a little larger than the iPhone 7 plus and in a smaller body, but still less total screen area than a 5.7" phone with a 16:9 ratio.

For some odd reason the nav bar is absolutely enormous, even in small display mode, making the usable area of the screen quite a bit less than 5.7, making it feel much more like 5.2/౩. If it weren't for the always on display this thing would already be back in the box.
I'm assuming you guys have not taken an update, if there even is one. In order to preserve whatever root method comes about first?

My G6 feels faster than my G4. I almost got the V20 but it didn't have wireless charging. I got a wireless charging sticker for the G4. I'll try to get use to this odd 5.7" screen size.
The G6 really reminds me of my old 5" HTC DNA with Verizon that was the 1st phone to have wireless charging back in like 2012.

After a full days use on my T-Mobile LG G6, it's definitely not as buttery as my Pixel but performance is good enough for an Android device running last year's silicon. You can tell the software isn't optimized for the SD821 like it is on the Pixel. The Pixel is by far the smoothest phone I've ever used.
So far the only thing that bugs me is the uneven LCD screen, the bottom half is warmer than the top which triggers my OCD like crazy and I see it every time on a white background. Brings back memories of my OnePlus One days where I had to exchange 4 different times to get a half way decent screen.
I'm getting really good battery life so far which is a good sign and it charges way faster than my Pixel it seems. Camera so far has been pretty meh... I took a few night pictures and they come out better on my Pixel.
So far, Pixel to me is still the king, I'll most likely return this thing and try the Galaxy S8. If that doesn't blow me away, I'm hanging onto my Pixel until the next gen version.

Don't worry once you guys get root you can use kcal to adjust screen calibration as we guys with the v20s are doing

T-Mobile shipped out their pre-orders early
yeah I`m waiting on ATT version, but I`m been with android forever, I`m also thinking of getting Iphone 7 plus and I have played with my wife`s phone and love how smooth and quick it is, not sure yet.........but I`m little concerned with the issues reported
Root is not fixing this thing's performance issues. It's not bloat causing it, its just clearly unoptimized. You will definitely want software updates enabled to get hopefully optimized software.
