[Q] Wi-Fi Tethering/Hotspot - Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo, Pro

Hi,
I'm trying to use my Xperia neo (not neo V if that makes any difference) as a Wi-Fi hotspot (Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Tethering & portable hotspot -> Portable Wi-Fi hotspot *tick!*).
I've set it up ok I think and I can get other Wi-Fi devices to connect to the phone fine. However, when I turn on tethering, the mobile data connection drops ('G', 'H', '3G' or whatever and the up and down arrows disappears from the status bar). When I turn tethering off again, the mobile data connection reappears.
I'm running the default Orange UK ROM - 4.0.2.A.0.62
I don't think that Orange (or any other provider, for that matter) like you tethering so is this a 'feature' that Orange has built into their customisation of the ROM? Or is it a bug? Or am I doing something wrong?
Many thanks

I dont know what to tell you, hotspot works great at me...

For me too. If you have any problems try to flash stock .62 or use some tether app from play market.

Solved!
Got fed up of troubleshooting so thought I'd do something a bit drastic and flash a generic ROM onto the phone.
Thanks to the amazing WotanServer (a new find for me!) now offering free firmware upgrades, I flashed the UK Generic firmware 4.0.2.A.0.62 and now Wi-Fi hotspot/tethering works just fine.

So, Orange is to blame?

Well I think you'd probably need more than one example of this before you could draw that conclusion... Could've been a glitch with my phone I guess...?

[Q] Hotspot doesn't work

ROM : VillainROM 3.0.0
Kernel : Ninphetamine 2.0.5
-----
After applying the fix for Hotspot settings to save in another thread (chown and chmod the /data/misc/wifi) I tried to turn on the hotspot, after all, this was inevitably what I got the phone for, H+ Hotspot.
Now I turn it on and the network appears in my computer, but if I try and connect to it, after I type in the security key, it comes up with "Connecting" and just stays like that permanently...
Eventually it sometimes says "Limited Access".
My phone does have internet connection, but why does it not work.
Does your network allow tethering?
Did it work on another rom?
Have you tried a hard reset?
I'm using tethering on VR but with speedmod kernel with no issues.

Orange in the UK for example use and APN on their SGS2 roms that doesn't allow tethering (you can set up a tethering connection no problem, but the network won't let you have any data).
They also lock the APN down so it isn't editable (insert rude word about Orange)!
You can get round the problem by adding another generic APN for all connections and using that.
i was having the same problem and struggled alll these days for solution. I used to get limited acesses and hence checked the ip4 & ip6 drivers connectivity for solution with no luck.
Then clicked on windows update, after update everything started working. So try to update your windows.
presently i am on turkbey ROM and it is working and also checked with sensation 1.9 and here tooo works!!!!!
Hey all, thanks for all your replies.
Network: 3
Plan: The One Plan +Tethering
Resolved: Yes.
For anyone else wondering how I fixed my problem:
1) Rebooted the phone
2) Rebooted my PC
3) Turned off the WiFi Adapter in my PC
4) Turned it Back On
5) Turned off WiFi on phone
6) Turned Hotspot on without any authentication
7) Worked on PC
8) Changed back to WPA2 PSK
9) Worked with Key.

I had wifi tethering working fine on Orange with SGS running Froyo 2.2.1, but have just upgraded my handset to SGS2 running Gingerbread 2.3.5 (stock XWKI8 firmware), and wifi tethering isn't working now.
As far as I can see I have exactly the same APN settings in my new SGS2 as in the old SGS, but maybe I need to use this new trick.
What do you mean by "adding another generic APN for all connections and using that"? If I add a new APN, what settings do I put in?
Thanks.

Wifi tethering does not work with my SGS3 and my laptop

I want to use the built-in wifi hotspot in my SGS3.
My laptop is an old Acer Travelmate 4100, which supports only 802.11b/g. It is abe, though, to connect to my wireless 802.11n router without problems (I suppose there must be backwards compatiblity).
But I can't connect to my SGS3 in tethering mode. It detects the hotspot but it timesout connecting.
I have also tested USB and BT tether and it works OK, so at least I have this little "workaround".
I set the hotspot as open just to make things easier.
Anyone has tried the built-in wireless tether in the SGS3?
Anyone has tried another wireless tether app?
I have tried Wireless Tether for root users and it doesn't work.
By the way, my phone is rooted.
Thanks.
mine works fine but im not rooted
Not sure if it applies to you but I would try again with a password for the hotspot. Some roms don't seem to want to let a connection happen without it.

I know it seems crazy but if you have vista or 7 try a password with at least 8 letters and one number or symbol. Also change the hotspot name to something else and try both wpa and wpa2. If that doesn't get it then its likely not one of the usual password snafus keeping it from connecting.

I hope this is not the case.
I've found a workaround, though. I can use a USB cable or Bluetooth. Both of them work OK.
Maybe it's wifi standard related, as my laptop only supports 802.11b/g connections, and I don't know if my phone is capable of running only in b/g standard.
Also, the phone wifi connection works flawlessly with my home cablemodem.
I'm thinking about flashing a different firmware so I can test if it software or hardware related. Does Omega 3.0 firmware support wifi tethering?
Wait!. I'm going to test if my wife's SGS2 can connect to my SGS3's wifi hotspot!.
Oh, yeah!. It works!. So it's not hardware related, but software. My laptop also can connect to my wife's SGS2 wifi hotspot (as used to do, by the way).
Weird....
Galaxy S3 tethering doesn't work
I have exactly the same issue for tethering on Samsung's GS3. Bluetooth, USB tethering works fine.
Wifi tethering:
WPA2 - doesn't work, no clients can connect (password >8 alphanum chars)
WPA - doesn't work, no clients can connect (password >8 alphanum chars)
Open - works for connecting a single Win7 x64 client only.
iPhone, iTab, Nokia E72, Blackberry cannot connect to either of those above although it sees the AP.
The same SIM card (converted back to normal size SIM) works fine with tethering on Samsung Galaxy S1/S2. This is a pure GS3 issue.
I purchased the phone from FNAC in Madrid (no contract) and has current configuration:
Android version: 4.0.4
Baseband model: I9300XXLE8
Kernel version: 3.0.15-554452-user
Build number: IMM76D.I9300XXALE8
No ideas on what else can be tried... looks to be hardware/software bug...

Well, in my case it works when connecting from another phone (my wife's SGS2). So it looks like it's software or configuration related...

wifi tethering
doesnt´t work for me either (stock, unrooted).
wifi teth does NOT work for me with my mac, pc, and some other mobiles that i tried. (All Encryptions )
neither does bluetooth tethering with my mac (usb as well but i guess that story is apples fault).
usb works on my pc (win7 x64) .
Anyone else can confirm this problem?
Beside this the Button Layout in the wifi-tethering config screen is quite weired. So i really think something really buggy in there.
thanks
quok
No problems here. Wifi hotspot set up on S3, set to WPA2, password over 8 characters with a mix of letters and numbers, TouchPad is happily connected to it. I'm on stock XXALF2.

Hi,
USB & Wifi tethering doesn't work for me with rom omega 5.2 (or official XXALE8 and XXALF2) but on Cynaogenmod 9 (21/06) it's working fine...
Having connection problems as well. Seems to be a Samsung problem because when I loaded the app FoxFi I had no problem using WiFi tethering. Hopefully they fix this soon.
FoxFi app worked for me on stock.

Ok I'm having the same problem.
I found this link
http://www.bytewiki.com/how-to-fix-wifi-connection-problem-in-samsung-galaxy-s3/
Basically:
1. Go to dialer, type *#0011#
2. Hit the MENU button and select Wifi
3. At the bottom of the screen is the button for Wifi Power Save Mode. Turn it off.
4. Back out of the menu.
5. Try tethering.
While it seems to have improved the reliability of the connection, the connection seems extremely slow and laggy compared to the connection I had with my Sensation.
Feedback from anyone?

It didn't work, but I have found the culprit: the kernel. I was using a custom kernel (siyah). I have gone back to the stock kernel and now it works ok. I hope this is fixed in next releases of the kernel. I have also tested with other custom kernels and it happens the same.

I'm on ALE8 with Siyah-Kernel and it works without issues, not even dropping data connection once over several hours as was the regular issue with my S1.
At the moment i believe you must have root to wifi tether via foxfi, FoxFi devs seem to be aware of the issue based on their notes on their bin link, stating "*Support for the new Galaxy S3 and the new ICS update for Epic Touch are being worked on. Should be compatible soon in a future update."
Same issue on stock rom and kernel for me. Other Android devices connect fine as does a newer Samsung laptop. But an older laptop with Intel B/G adapter running Win7-home prem 32 bit will not connect. Whether open, wpa2, b only, g only, .... My HTC Evo 4G has no problem connecting to any device.

Xperia P + ICS + Fritz!Box 7390 = Problem?

Hi everybody,
first of all I have to say that the ICS-upgrade for XP was worth the waiting. It is super and many things improved. Especially battery life and the sound went better. ..
But here comes my problem:
When I connect the phone via wifi to my Fritz!Box 7390 (WPA2) I can use the network for a few seconds, but then it crashes. When I make an AP to the box with another router or a computer I can use the network normally, but I cant download anything from the Play Store. It just stucks at downloading. Browsing is ok. Sounds strange does it?
Upnp is enabled and I also tryed to forward the needed ports manually with no sucess. Of course the box has the newest firmware.
Do you have any idea?
Same problem with my Xperia P and FritzBox 7230 - tested it with WPA security and everything is fine for the moment. Can you give this a try? I´m not sure about that problem, maybe it is FritzBox related thing?

Yes, I just tryed that. It works, but when I switch to WPA I can't acess internet from my laptop anymore. Same problem with my gf's laptop. I also guess that this problem is related to the box. I 'll write an email to AVM. When I got new infos, I'm gonna post it here (assuming that collosus won't delete this thread )
I have the same issue with a FritzBox 7340. But it's firmware almost identical to the 7390. I'll test some stuff later today and report back.
Xperia P + Fritz Box
Hi Guys,
I also updated my Xperia P and started to have trouble with my Fritz Box Wireless (7340).
The problem described above seems the same as I concluded.
Does anyone have an update on this?
One strange thing, my wife also has a Xperia P and that one doesn't seem to f**k up the Wlan.
The same with Xperia U + ICS + Fritz!Box 7390

My Xperia U worked flawlessly with Ginger Bread over my Fritz!Box
Immediately after updating I got problemcs with the WiFi network and not only the mobile but the rest of the devices using WiFi were disconnected.
If the problem was on the side of the phone, in any circumstances it should freeze the network
Image that it could be possibe to block a WiFi network just turning on a buggy phone.
There must be something wrong with the Fritz!Box...
I had the same problem with the 6.1.1.B.1.10 on the Xperia U
It's an often recurring problem with this version of the firmware.
The solution was turning of 802.11n and only leave 802.11b+g enabled on the FritzBox
Some other people have had success with changing the security mode from WPA2 to something else
I solved it through opening a guest network on the Fritz!Box. It is secured with WPA. Found no other way.
Interesting test with a second Fritz!box
I have connected a second Fritz!Box 7570 to the first causing the problem ( Fritz!Box 7390).
They are connected in cascade: The 7570 has DSL, DHCP and NAT disabled and its IP address is in the range of the first one (7390) and it is connected to an ethernet port of the other one
I can connect now my Xperia to the 7570 wireless network and everything seems to work so far.
If I connect instead to the 7390 WiFi it freezes it

[Q] Internet help

I'm connected to my houses wifi, which works perfectly fine on all other devices, including my Xperia Ion. Instead off the wifi bars in the bottom right being blue, they're grey. I try to use apps that use wifi, like Facebook and GTalk, but they can't connect. I opened up the stock browser and it connects fine. I'm running the latest stock ICS update. I highly doubt it, but just in case it's relevant, I haven't charged it in a while and have had it 'dead' for a week or so, till today. Can anyone please help get my internet working properly again? Thanks!
I used to have connection problems when my wifi security setting is Wpa/Wpa2, But i solved it with changing to only WPA2.Sure you must change it from modem/router/APN (whatever.).
Sorry for my bad english.

[Q] [Xperia P] Wifi Portable Hotspot not working after JB update?

Hi people,
I recently upgraded my SXP from rooted ICS 6.1.1.B.1.75 to Pre-rooted JB 6.2.A.0.400 ( found thanks to this thread ).
Everything went well, and the new version seemed to work, until i realized that the Wifi Hotspot function isn't working anymore (i used it everyday on ICS).
Also, tethering via Bluetooth doesn't seem to work.
My SXP wifi network is seen and I can connect onto it, but then nothing happens and there's no way to use the phone's data connection from a remote device.
I installed the 'WiFi Tether' app from Google play to give it a try, and the same thing happens.
However, this app gives me more detail and i can see what steps precisely block the connection, here is a screen of the error log : http://i.imgur.com/5ZhAAoF.png
Hopefully this'll help.
Has anyone run into the same issue? Can anyone confirm that the Portable Hotspot function still works on JB for Xperia P ?
It'd be kind of a shame to have to roll-back to ICS because of this....
Many thanks in advance for your help!

I've recently rooted my xperia play and found my wi-fi hotspot doesn't work. I've downloaded wi-fi tether apps but it doesn't seem to be connecting to the internet, it reads my connection but no access to internet.
Has anyone found a solution to this?
Thanks in advance
