Modding the OB Commuter Case for Ext. Bat? - HTC Rezound

Has anybody tried modding the OB Commuter case to fit the extended OEM battery? I wonder if its really possible.

Gonna say no it's not unless you could cut out a square for the battery in the stock door and the case parts, you'd still need some way to protect the battery and keep it in.

I've wanted to attempt this, cut a hole in the back of the stock battery cover and rubber sleeve of the otterbox, then hope theres enough room for the hard cover of the commuter to seal and hold the battery in. I don't have an extended battery yet though so i'm not sure how much room is needed.

Are you gonna try doing it once you get the xtended battery?

I think you might have to cut the otterbox hard plastic too. Maybe not, but I think it would be a very tight fit. I would definitely pick up an extended battery if it can be done without though.

I remember seeing that someone did it. I will try and find the post.
edit: here it is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22809448&postcount=26

I'm talking about the Commuter case, not the defender case which is bulkier already.

Yeah, it definitely won't fit without modification to the plastic, which would defeat the purpose. Even without the rubber shell and no battery door, the plastic still doesn't really fit over the extended battery.

Yeah I think you'd only be able to use the rubber part like the mod linked above, the plastic part clips on pretty tight.

lol oh sorry. I'm sure it could be modified. But because its not very bulky you would end up with an exposed battery. The extended battery extendeds quite a bit out of the standard battery door. Doont have a ruler on me now but I would say its at least or more than 1/8" extended out. If the case doesn't add more than that, it will be exposed.

Why Otterbox
Quick question, but why Otterbox?
Good quality case, or thinnest? Does it work with the verizon sold window mount?
(Not trolling, I just don't know.)

Good looking case that is a solid build. It is definately not the thinnest case though. I don't think that it would work with the window mount.

Wondering if anyone has tried it yet? I know the high gloss Silicon case fits in the car mount (as the mount comes with inserts to allow either an extended battery, or a reg. battery, with case... to fit.)
Anyone?
I've been using the case for about a day now and might just keep the black tpu one from Verizon. In hand, the case feels great and I like how the ports have flaps to keep junk from getting inside. The only downside I've found is the silicone attracts a ridiculous amount of lint. Took it out of my jacket pocket this morning and it practically needed to be wiped down with a damp cloth. I'll be damned if I am going to carry around wet naps to keep this thing clean
Jesus Christ doesn't that bother The hell out you? It drives me crazy LOL. I'm in construction so I keep my phone in a sandwich baggy at all times in work, while its in my pocket. But as soon as I take it outta the bag and put it in my pocket, you can forget it. It becomes a frikken mess. Bit its not too bad. I liked the one for my EVO 3D better. Ohh well, that's life I guess

Nope. I just got mine and tried it with the "iBolt" car mount made for the RZD and it does not fit properly. It isn't a matter of overall size - it's the fact that Otterbox cases usually, as in the case of the RZD cases, have a plug/flap over the USB connector. Unless you can live with cutting it off, you can't fit the Commuter case in the dock because the flap is in the way, open or closed.

Visually, yes it does look pretty cool and would do a good job protecting the phone in case of a drop, however, the plastic is VERY slick. I've almost dropped the phone because of the backing plate of the case.
I guess I'll just keep this one until the Seidio Surface comes out and sell this Otterbox.

Plus it does not fit in my cup holder stand.

Yup! I had the Surface on both mine and my gf's Incredibles that worked great. I can't wait for this case.
I tried to chat with a Seidio rep yesterday to find out when they would releasing (like early 2012, etc.) and she couldn't provide any kind of timeline. She did say I could sign up to receive a notification but I'm not really trying to do all that.
I used to love their other cases on my g 1, specially with the holster. I know it took forever for them to come out on the droid x, hopefully this doesn't take as long.

I was initially pissed that they didn't make one for the Desire when I had it until recently so I went with otterbox on that phone when I got it since it was the only good case out for it. Now I am glad because otterbox makes a much better product than the seidios on my blackberries.

The TPU cases are great, but don't provide the same level of protection as something like the Seidio Active. One big thing I am looking forward to in the Active is how the gel layer makes it easier to press the volume/power buttons since there are little rubber bumpers inside. Whereas the TPU cases make it nearly impossible to press the buttons.
I have a TPU case too, but for me, the only peace of mind it offers is knowing I can set it down without on a surface without worrying about damaging the casing. I would NOT anticipate a TPU case to protect from a bad drop. Not enough protection for adequate shock absorption.
And as a personal thing, I think the Active makes the phone look better, and also makes it feel better in hand. Burgundy Active case on this device will fit really well, since it is red/black, which is the theme of the device. So yeah, that is why I buy the Active. Greater peace of mind, device functionality, feel, and look.

I have a TPU case on my Inspire (which is a pretty well constructed phone). I had it in my camp chair cup holder which I folded up when I was leaving. When I swung the chair into the car the Inspire must have came out. I backed out over the Inspire (Tire tracks on the back of the TPU case). When i realized it and went back for the Inspire it was face down and the screen protector was scratched from the gravel, the volume button was broke (but still worked), and a couple very small marks on the edge of the frame around the screen where the only problems. Pulled the screen protector and everything works fine.
I now have a Otterbox Commuter on my Rezound. I guess I dont know the point of the story other then the Inspire seems to be better built then the Rezound. I'm not sure it could survive getting run over with my Otterbox let alone a TPU case.
I'm REALLY hoping they come out with an active case for the Rezound. I have one for the standard and one for the extended for my Bolt and I LOVE them both. I have an Otter Defender on it now just to keep it in good shape while I wait for Seidio to come out with something.

The case means the most to me. I would also hope they make the dock like they made for the Bolt (with the insert so you can dock it with standard or extended battery.) I would LOVE to see a kickstand on the case too since I use my kickstand on the Bolt a lot. They ended up putting the one kickstand on the Active extended which was great too.
Go Seidio Go!
I keep getting emailed sales and discount offers from them - but still no ReZound cases - I'd totally take advantage of your sale seidio if I could order a case/holster for my ReZound!

case question

is there a case, other than the otterbox, that has plugs for the different ports? i've been trying to find one on ebay and they all leave the usb and hdmi ports open. i would like to cover them up so nothing gets stuck or plugged up in the ports. my friend has an og evo and his usb plug is shot due to the corrosion from his pocket plus all of the lint. he is getting a new one with insurance, but i want to avoid that if i can.
thanks
Nope. As far as I know otter box is the only one that has those flaps. Its either the defender or the commuter.
You can get little plugs off ebay.

How thick is it? Does it feel bulky in your front pocket? Or look like "you're happy to see someone "?
Anyone have one of these? http://www.ebay.com/itm/190606338045 it looks a little thick on the back.
I'm looking for a case that covers all the ports (HDMI, USB, Audio) but is also fairly thin, I have a TPU case atm so I wouldn't want to go thicker than that, hows the thickness in the Commuter case compared to a TPU case?

Thin case

Hi there,
Im looking for thin case.
Best I have found is this case on ebay
Design is not bad, but its not covering glass area around the camera.
Questions:
1. Is there any thin case(plastic, rubber) that covers that?
2. Anyone tried skins? Will they remove easily(considering phone is jeans pocket)?
3. Those who are using various rubber, gel, hybrid and so on cases, how much fatter is your phone with them? If its not that much fatter suggestions on good cases then

I have tried them all, best case is either the capdase brand or official HTC TPU case. They both let your phone slide into your pocket easy, don't bulk out your phone, look great and offer good protection.

Look up the Kraken AMS. That is a reasonable case.
Alternatively just look for something like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BLACK-HAR...sesPouches&hash=item3a6a2fac16#ht_1887wt_1396
Best thing about this type of case is it doesn't add too much bulk, and is easy to get in and out of your pocket (unlike a silicone/rubber case). And it will actually protect your phone in a drop unlike that case you linked to in your original post. As for your screen... only BIG cases include a plastic layer to completely cover the glass.
Are you just looking for something with raised edges, and then use a screen protector perhaps? (Like the ebay one I showed you).
http://www.amazon.com/Acase-Superle...1HVI/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1333169597&sr=8-9
this has been the best case for me so far, its very thin, and has a rubber skin with a hard plastic shell..the kraken, and defender are way to big for me. this case is just the right size its about the same size as a tpu case.

My case looks exactly the same and it was £3 from amazon.
IMO the thinnest cases are the back cases ones that doesnt really cover the top and bottom bezel...just the sides and back. BUT if you really want to protect your phone and not get it scratched up over time, you are better off using a TPU type case as the are not too thick and are of softer material and will not rub off any of the black anodized paint. Unlike any hard cases, whether its back only or 2 pieces. Also TPU cases are more absorbent during accidental drop on hard surfaces.
I was running seidio 2pc case hard case w/kick stand with my first 3d and although it had felt inside it eventually rubbed off the pain on the top corners of my phone. The felt inside was very thin and the case is not skin tight so it would move some and the slight movement of the case over time eventually sandpapered some of the paint off. TPU or rubber type cases are more skin tight and is not as abrasive as plastic on painted metal and will not damage the paint so long as you also clean it off from time to time. Some dirt can eventually get in between and the dirt will act as sandpaper. So just consider this when you're buying a case as some of you would probably like to sell your phone later down the road or just want to keep it looking new for a long time.

Some people have complained that these type of cases are a bit loose on the sides. Easy fix is to lightly squeeze the sides inwards... tight fit!

nice job. I did the same thing with my resound and it worked great. now it's sitting on the shelf since getting the N3 :good:
So basically all you have to do is dremel out the back of the otterbox? I am using a zero lemon but it is a bit too bulky for me. Thinking about going this route if it is a viable option.
Does the battery bulge out at all on the rubber?
I'm also interested in hearing how much extra bulge this gives. I want to get a ZeroLemon but the case is like a puff pastry compared to the sleekness of the OtterBox. Plus that Max-5 has got me itching to mod the ZL into the OB just wondering how much tug the Hyperion gives on the silicone and if you think there would be enough play to fit a Zl in there. I was thinking maybe of shaving down some of the silicon a little since the camo OtterBoxes have a hard plastic print for the design so thinning the rubber behind it wouldn't be too much of a drawback in durability in my opinion. I just don't know if it would give it enough extra space to make the bulge less noticeable. If ZeroLemon is going to get into these rugged cases then hopefully they can slim them down in certain spots so it doesn't look like a bar of soap lol
The Zero Lemon uses some really cheap and hard rubber in comparison to the otter box case. I had a friend custom cut the back of the otterbox for me. I'm just waiting on the Anker battery. He did a really phenomenal job and I'll keep anyone here posted on how it fits.
Here we go... This is the best mod ever, lol. Good bye Zerolemon! The Otterbox is a WAYYYYYY nicer case.
Shout out to Greg for modding the case and making this all possible and thanks to OP for the idea.

Wow looks great. How does the rubber outer portion fit now that the battery extends out a bit.

Any thoughts on if a zerolemon battery would fit?

Fits great. It has a little bit of a bulge, but nothing anyone would notice unless you said something. It still sits flat on table surface.
Zero lemon will not fit no matter what you do with it. The ZL battery is way too large for any type of modification to work. The rubber won't even wrap around the phone with the battery in.

That's a shame. Seems like they really slimmed down the design with the Note 3 it looks half as thick as I expected it to be. My S3 struggled with the ZL as well though it did fit against all physics. I eventually modded it fully so the rubber laid flat as if the ZL wasn't there. Figured I would give it a shot with the Note 3 OtterBox but not for $70 just yet. The ZL case wouldn't be bad if more time was given to them to slim and refine the design.
The ZL battery seems like its larger than it has to be.. The Anker/Hyperion batteries are rather small and are 6400mah. The ZL is just ridiculously huge.

Yea it really is just gigantic. I just don't know what route I would take. I have seen a lot of impressive battery life out of the Anker/Hyperion batteries that was as good as my S3 with a ZL on it was so if I can get that level of life out of it then I'll just go that route. Saves some weight and bulk. What's nice about the otterbox's is they're easy to stealth the larger batteries. Just run the front plastic piece down with a sander and do the same with the rubber where the battery will go (camo cases exclusively since the camo part is like a hard plastic material, and bam you have original OtterBox thickness with double the battery.

The ZL case is just irritating. It's got this cheap feeling rubber and the buttons are extremely difficult to press. The new defenders feel a lot better than the ones I've owned in the past. This is without a doubt the best defender yet. The rubber is extremely pliable and gives the best button response i've ever felt on a case.

That's good to hear. I keep flip flopping because I keep looking at the ZeroLemon with it's absurd capacity which would be great for me and then I keep thinking about how badly I would just prefer to have an OtterBox but it's $40 more said and done which makes me just rather want to save the money, sacrifice a little quality, and focus on the whole purpose of just getting more battery capacity. I think I will just get the ZL, love it or hate it for a while then switch over to an OtterBox/6400mah combo later if I am not satisfied. I know I can slim the OtterBox to the point where the ZL will fit. Those cases have been flexible enough for me to do it before. It's just way more involved than simply cutting a hole in the back so that's why I don't think anyone's done it. That and the cost to do so is pretty high since they aren't selling just the batteries yet.

You aren't going to fit the zero lemon in this defender. This defender is very slim, it's not like the normal defenders I've ever owned.

It's sound good. I did also the same thing with my resound and it worked great.

Well aware of that but like I said the mod I do isn't a simple "cut hole here and go". I have given the N3 OtterBox 1.5mm (guesstimate) of extra depth on a friends broken case and when I get my ZeroLemon in I will test fit and see how it works. As is the case gives a lot of room for a bigger battery. The anker will fit flush and flat as if it wasn't even there and I don't see any issues at all with fitting a ZeroLemon but time will tell. The more I use this thing the more I think maybe I'll be more satisfied with just an Anker and Otterbox. The battery life is already pretty good. I guess my final judgement will be with the quality of the ZeroLemon case and it's heft. I promise to fit a ZeroLemon into a Note 3 OtterBox though for sure. When I get bored of the ZL case I will do so with a full boat write up.
