Australian Samsung Galaxy S II 4G - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys 4G Galaxy S II was released in AUS recently..
Info sheet here
My question is would the current custom ROMS available work on this phone ??
Tempted to buy it.. if not I may just play it safe for the next international Galaxy release..

Depends on how different it is.
If it has a different processor (like the I9100G for example), forget it. Obviously being 4G the modems will be different, if they work with current I9100/T firmware you might be able to use existing firmware with a 4G specific modem but we won't know until someone with a fair amount of technical aptitude actually gets one.
If it does need completely different firmware, I wouldn't be holding my breath for custom roms/kernels being created for it.
Edit to add - My advice; get an I9100 or an I9100T. Only network you'll be able to use it on at the moment in AU is Hell$tra.

At 1.5GHz, its probably a different processor, so it wont work. With LTE, it probably has a snapdragon processor compared to our Exynos.

Currently own a i9100 very happy with it.. I was afraid it wouldn't work.. had a gut feeling it wouldn't wanted some clarification is all.
Cheers guys.

[Q] Flashing Galaxy S Modem to Galaxy S II?

Hi!
I was wondering if it was possible to flash a Galaxy S modem to the Galaxy S II? Cause as of now, this phone is not released in Canada, and I don't think I would be able to receive the 3G unless it can accept that 800 band. Is this possible?
Thanks!
dude, the phone is quad band 3G+ . the international version will work in Rogers, Telus and all 850/1900 MHz networks you guys got up there just like it currently does on my ATT provider here in Boston.
And no, don't think about flashing a sgs modem. that will most certainly guarantee your phone's permanent and utter destruction.
It's weird, cause i have the i900 international... and I couldn't get 3G (HSDPA) until I flashed the Bell Canada modem onto it. I'm just wondering if that would happen to the i9100.
Unless the the base band already enables 850 and 1900... then it should be okay I suppose.
Hey guys, sorry to dig this thread up again. But just curious as to know why and how the modems are different between each other?
Have a similar issue with major battery drain on SGSII here in Australia, both phones running identical setups (I understand that kernel's being different is a major contributor too) but the SGSII is seriously dying with battery drain. Over all the modded SGS1 with different kernel etc gets much lower Quadrant scores than SGSII (obviously) but it is much zippier when being used, the interface is much smoother and faster than the SGSII visually. I diverse.....the issue I think could be the modem from the provider not being up to scratch. My modem I am getting a solid 3 days (finally I get to gingerbread and found a modem that is absolutely perfect for my phone and network)....after almost 2 years of various bouts of signal issues and/or battery drain issues.
Was curious to know what would be involved in getting the modem in my SGS1 to actually function for the SGSII?
Anyone want to give a run down on how modems are coded in a slightly dumbed down infor for semi-noob like my self?

[Q] Will ROM's for international sgs2 work on us variants?

So like the previous models of the sgs series ROM's that were made for lets say the vibrant wont work on the captivate and so on. Will that be the same for the US variants of the sgs2 because having a 3 million plus community on the international version is much more enticing. I dont want to buy the tmobile version and miss the opportunity of flashing awesome ROM's like the ones you guys are running.
As far as I am aware any SGS 2 rom should work fine on any SGS 2, regardless of where you bought your SGS 2 from in terms of country or provider. You might have to unlock the phone from T-Mobile to accept all sim cards though, but don't pin me down on that.
I don't think you would be able to flash any I9100 Rom out of the box without some modifications. Mainly due to the fact that the variants have 4 buttons instead of the 3 & different clocked cpu. Although I'm sure that Devs will be able to port these roms with modified kernels and so on.

[Q] Why is "Unlocked" not as good as International?

Hello! I am deploying to Kuwait for a year and was hoping to get international service on my unlocked SGSII i777 AT&T branded phone. I'll be installing CM7 or CM9 on it, but based on the posts here, there's some reason that it will not work internationally, at least not nearly as well as an International i9100? Is there anyone that could help explain why I would run into issues?
Slightly different hardware. CM7 should be about the same between the two - You will not see CM9 until kernel source for the I9100 becomes available, and even then, the audio libraries may be problematic for in-call audio.

But I shouldn't have any problems with an international SIM?

As long as your phone is sim "unlocked", you won't have issue with international sim unless it doesn't support the bands.
I can verify that I took my unlocked SGH-I777 to UK last week and put the sim card from O2 network. It worked like a charm.. 3G was working too without any issues.
Kuwait use GSM (2G) 900/1800MHz band as well as 3G on 2100MHz.
As long as your SGS2 unlocked, it should work, theoretically.
Band support is (I believe) identical between I9100 and I777.
Main difference is that the I9100 ICS leaks don't do much for us, we need a full I9100 release including kernel source to get ICS.
Thanks for the help, guys. My worries are alleviated

Best of luck... Hopefully this trend of things starting to get "interesting" around the Straits of Hormuz does not continue...
i just brought my 777 over to egypt and it is working just fine.

do you think American and European phones will be one in 2013?

the s3 is the same build in europe and america, but because samsung couldnt get lte working with their processor in time, they used a different one in the US. most of you know this. europe is finally starting to get 4g right? (took you long enough), do you think well see the exact same model released (with just maybe different radio bands) in both?
as an american phone user, you either buy the international phone and and get development, or you buy the US one and get monster LTE 50mbps.. i want both. its not just our side that would benefit tho. development wouldnt be split between regions, it could all be shared and collaborated. well im asking if you think itll happen, not convincing you why its a good idea lol..
so do you guys think itll happen?
Most probably yes, samsung was not ready with lte based exynos soc when s3 was launched, hence the variation. If you see note 2 the spec is almost same everywhere

Will the different LTE frequencies still not cause an issue then?
With each carrier having there own model?

lol that does raise new problems that didnt exist before.. i dont know what frequencies you guys will use, but i dont think that really matters much.. every carrier will have their own radio im sure. but as long as the rest of the phone is the same, development wont matter.. just as you can flash firmware XXYZ with modem XXAB and there wont be any problems, you could flash SGS4 firmware XXXDA with any number of modems.
its also possible that samsung could release a modem with multi regional support, so all carriers could use it.. but i dont really see this happening.
As well as using different frequencies, the USA uses two completely technologies namely gsm and CDMA.
Maybe in time, the chips used in phones will be small enough to work on all the frequencies/technologies.

[Q] Trying to find the right Modem (baseband) file?

Hello everyone,
So I'm not too good with the whole modem/baseband issue. What I'm trying to find out is which modem file works best with AT&T, and since AT&T sells a different version of the S2, I know I can't use the basebands for that model. Does anyone have a recommendation for a baseband that might work. I'm in Manhattan, KS, but I don't need anything tailored to my area in particular, just something that would work US-wide (I'm coming from the korean version of the S2, so my baseband is COMPLETELY different for some reason)..
Thanks a TON for the help, everyone!

You don't wanna get a branded ROM, you are looking for as stock as it gets ROM (super-hyper unbranded). Forget about AT&T, I really don't think basebands differ from one model to another.
I might be wrong- doesn't feel like it, but I might-.

Ive got my s2 with custom rom going, but I cant get anything better than edge service right now, even though there is definitely 4g in this area...
